The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

NYC mayor Eric Adams seems to want it both ways. Draconian public health measures of demonstrably no value, except to demonstrate his authority over every aspect of life in New York City, and suspension of those measures when it contributes to the soaring crime rate in the city.

Wow...would would have thought that forcing business owners to allow masked people into their businesses would be problematic? That's a real head scratcher!

There is a sign on the entrance door to a big local gun store that asks that patrons remove hats, and sunglasses before they enter. That is sane. All other options are remarkably stupid and an invitation to chaos.

NYPD Wants Businesses to Require Customers Remove Masks

The advice comes as New York City Mayor Eric Adams admitted that a shoplifting epidemic is forcing chain stores to close down and costing retail workers their jobs.
“People who say that we’re criminalizing the poor—they’re wrong,” Adam said at a Feb. 12 budget hearing in Albany as he made the case for billions in additional state funding for his city. “Poor and low-income New Yorkers are being unemployed because we’re losing those businesses in our city.”
“We’re losing chain stores that are closing down. People who are being employed in those stores are losing their jobs,” the mayor told the state Legislature. “They’re adding to our unemployment.”

Of course Adams will use this as an excuse to mask (hah!) his many failures as mayor. The crime rate in NYC is exploding because Adams and his progressive followers have shifted the policing dynamic in the city so far toward the criminals that the cops just don't bother. Why should some cop chase down a shoplifter if the perp will be released within hours and in all probability have his charges pleaded down to nothing or simply dropped? And of course there is a significant chance of the arrest going south rapidly and the cop being charged with assault, manslaughter, or simply being mean to a criminal, which is rapidly becoming a real crime in America.

Businesses are closing because of crime, high taxes, lax policing, terrible city services...masking is a symptom, not a cause.

Mayor Eric Adams has echoed the NYPD’s call for New York City businesses to request customers remove their masks when entering, as the search continues for a hazmat suit-clad gunman wanted in four robberies, one of which turned deadly.
“Let’s be clear, some of these characters going into stores that are wearing their mask, they’re not doing it because they’re afraid of the pandemic,” Adams told PIX11 Morning News on Monday. “They’re doing it because they’re afraid of the police. We need to stop allowing them to exploit the safety of the pandemic by wearing masks.”

And what the hell kind of English does Adams speak? He's a jabbering fool in nicely tailored suits. Unlike his predecessor, who was a jabbering fool in poorly tailored suits.

How about some simple declaratory sentences? "New Yorkers are losing their jobs because..." is much better than some hackneyed political blather..."Poor and low-income New Yorkers are being unemployed because we’re losing those businesses in our city.”

Huh?

Everybody knows that. The question is, what are you going to do about it? And we all know the answer...nothing! More taxes, begging for bailouts, but continuing the policies that are causing the downturn in the first place.

Sadly, New Yorkers voted for this idiot, and they are getting what they deserve.

One way to handle this in the short term - as welfare should be eliminated in the long term - is people get welfare by working and living where there is low skill work to be done - chopping trees, harvesting food, etc.

Get them out of the cities. BUT, and this is the important part, GIVE THEM WORK.

And if you don't want that type of work great - you can take any job you can get...but no one is going to give you a handout to not work.

I sat on a plane next to an old lady from NYC after DeBlasio was elected. We were having a decent conversation and she said she supported him and I said something along the lines of "he's communist." I had a professor of German history once where I experienced this. I called bullshit on one of her statements (that the US armed forces are the mechanism to make poor black people fight the rich white people's wars) because the facts actually do not support her argument. She told me to write an essay for extra credit if I was so sure I could support my position.

I did. She rationalized away all the demographic data and concluded commented that "people like us" need to be wary of hate facts used by wreckers to argue against what we know to be right.

Even after calling her out *and* writing a paper with sources to demonstrate how wrong she was, she *still* thought I agreed with her.

"Be All You Can Be" was an excellent slogan, and abandoning it was insane. All of the slogans that have followed - "Army of One," "Army Strong," etc. - have been abject crap. They had what was perhaps the perfect slogan and a very, very strong brand identity built around it, and they threw it away for no reason whatsoever.

It always strikes me as insane when organizations do this. McDonald's abandoning "Have You Had Your Break Today" was also mind-boggling.

I use to drive a truck into all five boroughs of NYC. What a mess. But there are areas that are conservative as all get out*. Parts of the Bronx and Brooklyn down by the old Navy yard are straight up republican bastions. There are other largish pockets of resistance strewn throughout the City but they get outvoted by Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

*The last time I was in NYC was right after 9/11 so my information may be OBE.

IIRC Pepsi had taken over the number one spot in the Cola Wars for a couple of years, and -

Pepsi was quite a bit sweeter than Coke. Also no Coke "burn".

So, they retooled Coke to essentially be Pepsi. Only, I think, a bit sweeter now than Pepsi.

The smart thing would've been to make New Coke along side of "ClassicCoke" instead of trying to lose all their customers who liked Coke just the way it was.

Aptitude testing is supposed to help with that. It's one of the reasons for the ASVAB.

But that's still just run-of-the-mill smart people. When there's a major war project going on, they usually bring in outsiders - like Bletchley Park and the Manhattan Project did - and then they are known quantities. It's just about results and maintaining secrecy.

Curiously, there is a coal mining town in British Columbia called Tumbler Ridge, with a sort of similar history. A huge mine for metallurgical coal was developed there, and they needed to house the mine workers, as the commute from the closest existing towns would have been too long. So they built an architecturally-planned community, everything built in harmoniously colored ticky tacky style. Real "Stepford Wives" vibe to the place. The mine was closed, Tumber Ridge almost became a ghost town; they tried to make it into an artists' colony, and then the mine reopened.

Rigging is broader than just voter fraud but includes entry requirements, local and state party support, etc. Effectively, the GOPe moves to squash any challengers by denying them any party services, dishonest dealings involving party rules, paying for no-hope candidates to split the vote, and so on. I also know that they collaborate with Dems to bring in outside voters into GOP primaries in order to defeat conservatives that might rock the boat policy wise.

I don't think he's better than Curly. Curly was genius. I just think that Shemp was better than he's given credit for. His timing was good, expressions were perfect and fit the role very well and was a decent replacement for Curly.

I do find it funny that they just swapped Curly out one day and put Shemp in with zero explanation or build up whatsoever. One episode, Curly. Next episode, Shemp.

I get that. However, there are alternatives to help that situation, like the adjustable chair. Got one for my mother and she was quite successful with it. She walked with a walker for a couple years before she passed. Still showered.

Fortuitously our cops have a hardon for them and make life miserable enough they split for the city. I don't know exactly what kind of information setup the cops have, but it's extremely effective.
