Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report — 2/28/23![]() The US embassy in South Africa has warned citizens traveling to or living in South Africa to stockpile on food and water amidst an "ongoing energy crisis" taking place in the nation. The warning, issued earlier this month, warns that the South African government has declared a "State of Disaster" in response to ongoing power shortages, caused by "load-shedding" or rolling blackouts, which are expected to last beyond 2023. "Load-shedding currently results in localized power outages of up to six hours or more per day throughout the country," the US embassy stated. "These planned electricity outages negatively affect private residences, businesses, municipal lighting, traffic lights, and hotels. Rolling blackouts can also impact water availability and safety, internet connectivity, cell phone network coverage, fuel pumps (and therefore fuel availability), residential security features, and the food supply." Additionally, these power outages "have the potential to increase crime; for example, traffic jams when lights are out provide opportunities for smash and grab crime, and residences can be targeted when lights are out and security systems are not functioning. Further, ongoing conditions have led to an increase in protests and demonstrations, and in some cases civil unrest, throughout the country." Additionally, US citizens are urged to maintain a 72-hours worth of food, water, and medical supplies, as well as stockpile flashlights, batteries, and basic tools. In addition to citizens preparing, businesses in South Africa have been preparing for the potential collapse of the grid. According to the Sunday Times, the South African Reserve Bank has stressed that a regional or national grid failure is unlikely to occur, but longer stages of load shedding have pushed businesses to prepare for the possibility. For those wholly unaware, both South Africa and Zimbabwe, the nation formerly known as Rhodesia, were not the third world shit holes of poverty, disease and corruption that were and are the hallmark of probably every other country on the Dark Continent. In fact, Zimbabwe was once known as the breadbasket of Africa. Just about 40 years later and it's a basket case, and since the end of apartheid South Africa has been on the same trajectory and gaining fast. By the way, with Jimmy Carter about to join the Choir Invisible, it's worth mentioning that his refusal to recognize the legitimately elected Bishop Abel Muzorewa resulted in new elections that saw nightmarish thug Robert Mugabe installed as dictator for the next 30-odd years. But I digress. Why do I bring up the collapse of South Africa's power grid and the likely collapse of its economy and society? Because that is exactly what the Biden junta has in store for us here in the nation formerly known as the United States of America. Take away cheap – as well as relatively clean and dependable – coal, oil and natural gas and insist on unproven, erratic, wildly expensive and completely insufficient so-called "clean" energy like wind and solar power, and we will go more south than South Africa. And that's before itching to start World War 3 over Ukraine, one of the most corrupt nations on the planet in which we have zero strategic interest. Except for the Biden/Pelosi/Kerry et al "special relationship" – with Burisma. It's a toxic mix of incompetence and ideology, not to mention just pure hatred. This is what Biden, through his puppet masters and handlers, hath wrought. And we're only two years into this crap. Despite the media’s best efforts, however, the trainwreck story forced its way into the news and then it did something nobody could ignore: The trainwreck revealed the trainwreck. For the reasons I discuss below and perhaps many others, Norfolk Southern’s East Palestine disaster has spotlighted the dysfunction and cynicism of the Biden Administration. Biden has held himself up as a savior of the working class. He tells fantastical stories about driving an 18-wheeler and his ancestors working in coal mines. But these lies have not hurt Biden because his lying seemed to come from a sincere affection for working-class Americans. But when the cameras showed Biden handing out billions in Ukraine while the residents of East Palestine cough up blood, people noticed his priorities. . . . . . The Left’s reaction to the East Palestine disaster has vividly revealed what we’ve already known: climate activism has quietly displaced and silenced real environmental activism. The change has been subtle and incremental. But the Democratic Party has totally shed classical rivers and streams environmentalism. . . . . . A big part of Biden’s brand is that he, unlike Trump, would follow the advice of “the experts.” The Democratic Party’s brand relies on the perception of it being the party of science and expertise. Yet the credibility of public health and safety officials has taken a major beating in recent years during the gross mismanagement of the COVID pandemic. The lockdowns did more harm than good. Masks don’t work. The vaccines didn’t stop the spread of the virus. Indeed, a lab leak is now increasingly understood to have been the likely cause of the pandemic. . . . . . For nearly three years, the Left has polluted every corner of our culture with a toxic social justice narrative that white Americans continue to benefit and thus share in the guilt for their unjustly acquired wealth and privilege. Just a few months ago, Biden characterized Trump supporters, which describes many of the residents suffering from the chemicals poisoning East Palestine, as “semi-facists” who “threaten our personal rights and economic security . . . They’re a threat to our very democracy . . .” . . . By implication, communities like East Palestine don’t deserve more attention because of the racial guilt assigned to them by people claiming to be “antiracist.” Joy Behar scolded residents of East Palestine for voting for Trump, suggesting they may have brought the calamity on themselves. “I don’t know why they would ever vote for him, for somebody who, by the way, he placed someone with deep ties to the chemical industry in charge of the EPA’s chemical safety office,” she said on the view, adding, pointing at the camera, “That’s who you voted for in that district. Donald Trump, who reduces all safety.” Prior to its train derailing in East Palestine, Northfolk Southern chimed in on the charade realizing that a little lip service might protect them from any real scrutiny. In its recent ESG report, Norfolk-Southern bragged that it’s made race-based hiring a priority, reporting: – 52% of trainee/intern hires are a racial minority and/or femaleI had mentioned the junta's executive order requiring D-I-E to be the basis of all considerations within the federal government, but that sooner or later, it would filter into every corner of the ever-shrinking private sector. Maybe instead of Norfolk Southern's "corporate greed" as a cause or contributor to the derailment, maybe it was C-suite diversity madness that could have played a part. That said, the decision to dump and burn the chemicals despite being still contained in un-compromised tank cars still makes no sense, despite supposed reports of fires and the blast potential if they were to cook off. This diversity cancer will destroy even the most basic of competencies across our society, with potentially lethal consequences. Not saying that's definitely what happened here, either with Norfolk Southern or the government responders. But it is going to happen if we continue to make war on merit, starting in the schools and then through every sector of our lives. Yet, that is exactly what is happening. If God forbid one day you have to go see a doctor, given that D-E-I is running rampant through the medical schools right now, if a black guy in a white coat and stethoscope tells you to drop your shorts, bend over and say "ahh," a racist thought might just run across your mind, as you run for the door. That is the insidiousness of "affirmative action." It's bad enough that the Left seek to eradicate the wrongdoings of the now distant past and worse, the imaginary wrongdoings of the present with this madness. They claim to be anti-racist but in point of fact, all that D-I-E does by promoting people based on minority status over competency is to make racists out of all of us, vis a vis, the hypothetical I just mentioned. Talk about irony. And it's not even racism, per se. It's just common sensical human nature once again kicking in to destroy the potential for "paradise on earth." Insane.

JJS shines a light on lefty capture of large businesses, following on complete domination by the left of academia, medial, and government. Only small business still concerns itself with prosperity, and for that reason the kulaks will be strangled with regulations and stripped of credit access, and eventually executed.

The Left’s reaction to the East Palestine disaster has vividly revealed what we’ve already known: climate activism has quietly displaced and silenced real environmental activism.
++++ Bullshit, and a false premise. "Climate activism" *is* "environmental activism" and always has been. They are one and the same, they come from the same place, have the same goals, have the same methods. Anyone with the label "environmentalist" is a communist of some variety and it has always been this way, ever since the dawn of the movement. That is why the needed a fancy new word to describe themselves. The "environmentalists" are new. Before they came onto the scene, environmental protection was advocated for by conservationists. Conservationists were usually sane and usually not communists. Rationally minimize pollution. Rationally conserve wildland areas. They didn't want the destruction of industry or men, they didn't want huge gobs of unaccountable state power and they didn't want a return to slavery. The environmentalists did and do. Sometimes, it just takes a comedian to say the thing that is so glaringly obvious to anyone who doesn't worship at the alter of their political gods Posted by: Clyde Shelton at February 28, 2023 08:08 AM (Do5/p) ++++ This is one of the points of a comedian. It always has been. Court jesters were there to entertain but also to cut across the bullshit and speak some truth to power while making people laugh. The most direct comparison to the jester of olden times is the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where a comedian roasts the president. That ancient and perhaps even primal outlet has been suppressed along with everything else. Comedians can't do that, or they get canceled. 70 Speaking of field hockey, with their glorious short skirts, i wonder if Argentina (a field hockey power) isn't a possible Galts Gulch. Empty. Spectacular (or so I am told) and governed by so incompetent a socialistic enterprise that people out in the sticks are left pretty much alone. Of course, I would have to learn Spanish, which is a problem....
ARG does very well in hockey yes. altho the girls just lost to the Aussies when Argentinian players would come up and visit our club, they were the happiest kids! I hosted one over a summer so she could train here (believe it or not! We are on the same path as Zimbabwe, just slightly slower.
Zimbabwe's problems had to do with the usual corruption of Party members, but a significant part of that was marginalizing, if not confiscating the assets of European stock citizens who had been active in that country for centuries. So it was corruption that confiscated the producing assets, and then the removal of the skills to produce wealth. Basically the Venezuela model of chasing off the capital and the talent to produce wealth domestically. South Africa's energy problems suffer from corruption and lack of capital, but if we remember articles from a few months back, the coal plants in South Africa require a certain quality of coal. That coal was criminally diverted to satisfy Europe's need for high quality coal, and crappy coal was actually delivered to South African power plants. The failure to generate power from that poor quality coal is part of the problem. Posted by: Reuben Hick at February 28, 2023 08:11 AM (l7lsb) 82

Apple's new Green Energy Charging is probably a pretty good glimpse of the future. When on (by default), it will only allow charging of your iPhone during times when solar and wind power is available to charge your phone is a "green' manner. Which of course means massive inconvenience for the consumer and poor performance built into the iPhone). Note though, it can be turned off. If this sort of thinking is already considered a-okay in the tightly contested cell phone market., I imagine Our Betters are working on some form of power usage or "sharing" based on DIE or class or voting patterns or social credit is already in the hopper. Well, they better get on building out those massive storage battery facilities that they are going to need to have available power when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. Before they came onto the scene, environmental protection was advocated for by conservationists.
And entities like Ducks Unlimited and other hunting and fishing associations. They were opposed to policies that would ruin hunting and fishing - but not at the expense of human flourishing. Environmentalists are against human flourishing and will advocate policies that harm and reduce humanity; their favorite vector of manipulation is via "the environment" - just by saying that "we care" it absolves them from taking responsibility for the collateral damage to the environment (e.g. out of control forest fires, windmill bird strikes, floods, etc.) when actually attacking human beings. Posted by: jewells45 fuck cancer at February 28, 2023 08:21 AM (wagHN) Depending on how snazzy you want to go, an SLR with the proper lens and a ring-flash will give you great close-ups. Also very pricey. Look up cheap specialty cameras with ring flashes built-in made to take close-up photos For instance, there's several in the dental world that aren't too expensive. Also, some the police use for evidence. Things like that. Probably easy to find on amazon. Posted by: naturalfake at February 28, 2023 08:30 AM (KLPy8) 153

South Africa is highlighting the fragility of our modern economic and social systems. 150 years ago it was still possible for a city to be self sufficient in food, energy, etc. With enough local farms, a well run city could survive a national collapse. But now? Who could build their own electrical grid, or find enough energy supplies, or provide any of the things we think essential for a city today?
For this reason, when a society like South Africa collapses today, every single part of it, no matter how small, will collapse along with it. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 28, 2023 09:06 AM (r46W7) 242

The argument over Star Trek in the sidebar is kind of ridiculous.
The original Star Trek was entertaining and touched on deeper issues, sometimes well, sometimes poorly. So it was worth watching on occasion. As part of a new report released Monday, a survey of more than 1,000 low-income Pennsylvanians found that taxes are often a major barrier to economic security—ranking ahead of more commonly discussed problems such as credit card debt and student loans. Among those surveyed, all of whom have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level (about $53,000 annually for a family of four), the average respondent reported paying $4,575 per year in taxes.
I think Milton suggested many times to end all welfare and food stamps and just have a negative income tax. The Fair Tax does that in essence as it pre-bates what a family of 4 pay monthly for the internal consumption taxes. Posted by: rhennigantx at February 28, 2023 09:19 AM (BRHaw) 292

I don't know how PA does it, but apparently there's a period of time that has to pass before he can appoint someone or there's a special election. The Democrats think a Republican would win a special election so they'll do whatever they can to keep Fetterman under wraps, but voting. Good morning, all, and thank you, J.J.
It was reported South Africa risked backlash for the 10 day naval exercises, though they were not a first, and while a handful of protesters assembled in protest it simply wasn't enough. Just before the naval exercises was the Yellen visit where she said "the United States’ strategy towards Africa is centered around a simple recognition that Africa will shape the future of the global economy.” And during the exercises was the two trip by Dr Prof J & newly married granddaughter, Naomi, "intended to demonstrate the United States' commitment to keeping African nations at the table for a host of global priorities," and also so the 1st lady could "look at how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has harmed the food supply" in the Horn of Africa. (Nothing about Chinese mining.) The left's anger, i.e., Dingell's Statement on Transport of Hazardous Waste to Belleville - did more to highlight the plight of E. Palenstine than any other action to that point in time. Someone/some agency was thinking, imo. Yrs ago, Trump was said to be laying foundation for a "vengeful Biden administration." Who knew he'd be prophetic? Posted by: Lola at February 28, 2023 09:32 AM (GshMh) Posted by: artisanal ette at February 28, 2023 09:33 AM (9qHsE) 336

Posted by: Ziba at February 28, 2023 09:19 AM (4h9M3) My 1970 Chevelle Malibu loan rate was 11% when I financed it in May 1970. Still have the car, restored it in 1999. Surprising news about Vanguard funds, because I had a meeting scheduled with "the guy" to transfer some trust fund holdings. I can move certain things without upfronts, and wanted as far away from ESG as I can get. I'm lucky this announcement came out, or I'd have been an Emily Litella investor.
BlackRock is even bigger than Vanguard in their own fund action and their mangement status with things like pensions and group 401K's -- so, harder to avoid. Their commitment to ESG appears deeper. Watch for the term "Net Zero" in addition to the poison initials. That's the insider club of fund management WEFfers. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 28, 2023 10:03 AM (jYCXf) 350
The 1970 Malibu has turned out to be a good car to hold. I would not have predicted that, seeing how the new ones were driven at the time. Must be like train sets: if most of them hadn't been thrown around the basement, they wouldn't be collectors' items now.
They don't warp or sag in the middle like most pony cars would, and don't dog-track like a Nova. Of course I feel that they handle a lot better with a small-block, but I have that prejudice, that runs across brands. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 28, 2023 10:16 AM (jYCXf) 351

The last Canadian Hockey team to win the Stanley Cup was in 93. Posted by: Thomas Bender at February 28, 2023 08:07 AM NHL teams are not Canadian hockey teams (i.e. teams made up of 100% Canadian players). NHL teams are just teams made up of some combination of international players which play their home games in either a USA city or a Canadian city. Would be interesting to check the % of Canadian players on the Stanley Cup champion teams of the last 30 years. Just checking my hometown team, Chicago Blackhawks: 2009-2010: 19/31 = 61% 2013: 16/32 = 50% 2014-2015: 15/37 = 41% Posted by: Clyde Shelton at February 28, 2023 10:41 AM (Do5/p) 355
I have had the good fortune to hike & climb in the USA, Africa, South America, Oceania, and Asia. After some initial travel in non-western countries I developed my top 3 criteria for understanding any nation:
1) Education 2) Energy 3) Equality (Rule of Law v. Rule of Man) For me those three criteria are not exclusive of other criteria, they just have the best predictive value for trying to understand a nation's Past, Present and Future. • Energy: It is simply not possible to have a modern economy and society without energy. And that does not mean the country has to have abundant natural energy resources within its borders. However, it does mean that the country must have access to energy, and the ability to distribute energy throughout its borders (see Japan). Plus, the ability of most citizens to afford the energy. Without a modern economy and society it is not possible to support a sizable "middle class". Keep in mind that in those "under privileged" countries, the 'ruling class' has access to energy, goods, etc.; which creates a de facto "two-tiered society". Posted by: that guy at February 28, 2023 11:03 AM (BGkyf) 356
• Equality: My definition of Equality is centered on which of these dominate: 'Rule of Law' or 'Rule of Man. And the 'Rule of Law' is both the most beneficial and challenging.
I'll add that the 'Rule of Man' dominates throughout the world (see almost all non-Western nations & most continents). Which should be no surprise since a 'Ruling Class' has been the norm/ natural state throughout history – in any age, culture or society. And a 'Ruling Class' benefits the most from the 'Rule of Man'. As others have noted: Westerners who have enjoyed the blessings of life in a free society should understand that the life we've led since 1945 in the Western World is very rare in human history. BTW – I have been researching major, post-WWI migrations events, and I have yet to find an event when mass numbers of citizens voluntarily left a country where the 'Rule of Law' dominated, to move to a country where the 'Rule of Man' dominated. Posted by: that guy at February 28, 2023 11:07 AM (BGkyf) 357
• Education: This is the ability to provide a government funded, educational foundation - reading, math, science - to all children (K-12) throughout the country. While there are many benefits to elementary & secondary education, one of the most important is that it is an "equalizer". And over time it has also become a necessity to not only maintain a modern economy and society; but to create them in the first place.
In just my lifetime I have seen the education foundation in this country deteriorate (see PISA scores). And that is clearly not due to a lack of funding (see World Edu Spending). But it is almost certainly due in part to: 1) a shift in priorities within the “teaching industry”, and 2) an inability to meaningfully “measure” teacher & administrator performance. Competence doesn't matter because votes don't matter. The DNC is going to bank enough mail-in votes in swing states before the presidential election that they can do whatever they want and still win.
Look at the mail-in vs. "day of" breakdown for Fetterman. He already won before he ever had to debate. That's likely the only reason he agreed to the debate. Posted by: Grim at February 28, 2023 01:48 PM (NJp2V) 362
