Old rotary phones have sort of become a thing. I'm sort of into that. Down here in Miley's house, I have a genuine (say that in Mr. Haney's voice) cherry red WE 554 wall phone in the kitchen. Also have a genuine '70s era WE 500, black, the phone of my childhood in the '70s. My next item will be WE 202, with a real subset. Those get a bit pricey. That will probably persist. They are a few things like that that persist, even thought the original meaning of the words is long gone. Shakespeare is full on the, "Hoist with his own petard", for example. We know the metaphorical meaning, even though the literal is lost (it was also a fart joke). "The check's in the mail" will be another likely one. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at February 27, 2023 08:08 PM (Mzdiz) 195

Having been 29 for so long, I learned the ropes on an actual 40's era "cha-ching" register with the pop-up numbers (and no sale!) at the hardware store. We did have a modern electric one as well, but I liked the old mechanical one. Both required you to use your brain when it came to change though. So that was one of the first things I learned, and could still do it today. Sadly, about the only thing I can still do today I could do when I was 17. Posted by: Insomniac for a moment at February 27, 2023 08:21 PM (II3Gr) Luckily, I had no kids. But I sure AF found out who my real friends were. F them all. They finally figured it out after a few years, but they're all dead to me. I had my ex's assistant who gave me living hell towards the end come back and apologize a year later, she was having a serious health crisis and wanted to come clean before she passed (I forgave her and luckily she's in remission), and spilled the beans on things I only suspected. However, finding out that my divorce lawyer is besties with the ex is not something I expected. Not sure if there's recourse (I need to prove they were besties before I'm guessing), but now a lot of things make sense. And why I came out with the short end of the stick. I was just reading a sad, but not surprising twitter thread about South Africa, written by a resident. No one in the MSM wants to notice, but SA has now entered the final phase where civilisation itself breaks down. Police / Fire protection is mostly non-existant, the electric grid has collapsed with no plans to fix it, and most amazing of all, the daily death rate from violent acts is now higher in SA than in Ukraine.

257 I bought my lawyer another house with all the shenanigans. He tried the alienation thing with my 24 year old - it ultimately didn’t work. He pretends our oldest doesn’t exist and he abandoned a (at the time) 6 year old special needs child, which didn’t endear him to any of the 3. He puts “father” in his profile, or at least he did, I don’t care enough to look. But the girls and I laughed at this just like we laughed at his pronouncements to love Jesus. Oh, narcissists. Ya gotta give them credit for their abilities. Anyway, congrats again. Life is so much better when you don’t have to walk on eggshells.

Note the Contempora had a rotary dial in the handset. This was smaller diameter design (to fit reasonably in the handset without being too bulky). It used a movable finger stop to allow for the smaller diameter. These and some of the Princesses had lighted dials. THe original designs used a low voltage AC circuit to power the light, driven off a transformer that had to plug in the wall. They even had a special RJ-xx spec for a modular jack that used an extra pair for the low voltage AC. Later designs switched to LEDs that could be powered right off the phone line DC. At one time, they even put in a mechanical delay on the hook-switch mechanism to prevent you from making and breaking fast enough to emulate dial pulses. You could have luck with that with the lower digits. The pulse standard was 10 +/-2 pulses per second. Digit 0 was 10 pulses. To dial a number like, 999-9000, you'd have to be pretty damned fast. But a number like 222-1111, you could do it easily. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at February 27, 2023 08:45 PM (Mzdiz) 306

Exactly. They'll never know. They can't. This isn't just a trick of the wording. The brain develops at at early age, and if a human doesn't experience love when their brains are developing that way, it never does. It remains dormant, dead. Here's the thing - I was raised pretty much without parental love. My upbringing would best be described as abusive. Years and years of it. So I wonder sometimes if I am capable of experiencing love (and other emotions) as "normal" people do. This vexes me greatly. Agonize over it sometimes. Anyway, going for real now. Ciao.
Ciao. Posted by: Insomniac for a moment at February 27, 2023 08:56 PM (II3Gr) The thing about resilience though, is that there's never a clear one to one correlation. Lots of people are exposed to abuse and neglect as children, and somehow rise above it. Often due to other people in their lives, showing them real love, even when the parents/caregivers don't/won't. I'd say if you're asking the question "am I capable of loving the way other people do," the answer is yes. Or maybe not just like other people, because you know better than anyone, there was damage. You were harmed. But you weren't broken. Not by a long shot. Posted by: BurtTC at February 27, 2023 09:08 PM (M2qSa) 372

SOme of the history of the telephone is funny. The old telegraph companies had success with using teenaged boys as gophers, and so the new phone companies thought to use them as "operators" as we now call it. That didn't last long. Turns out that the what we now call "phone etiquette" of teenaged boys wasn't the best in the world. And the old trope of "Sarah", the old maid small town switchboard operator used to great comedic effect, was based on more than a kernel of truth. The Drama of Cats! Funneh video. Reminds me of my sisters late kittuh's, Casper and Laura. I had just gone to bed when I heard growling and kittuh angry meows. They were LOUD. So I get up, go to the living room and Casper was playing the ole "I'm not touching you" game. He was sitting a cat hair distance away from Laura, who was trying to sleep. She was sounding like Casper was killing her and he was just standing. I walk out, the angry kittuh noises stop, Casper casually strolls towards me for a pet and Laura is looking like 'What? I didn't do nuffin. Go back to bed, hooman.'

Think the ski resort is inside Mall of the Emirates. It's interesting. Dubai was a good place for me for a while for geographic reasons, worked out well. Excellent Indian food (and Thai). Friendliest place on earth (everyone working there is either Indian or Filipino, 2 of the nicest/friendliest sorts of people, on average, you'll meet). Great golf courses. Back then, excellent high-end hotels, for reasonable prices.
Recos if you go - do the tour over to Ras al Khaimah on the Indian Ocean. Also do the tour of the old town in Sharjah (right next to Dubai, really just different part of same urban conglomeration). And check out the gold souk. If you can choose, go in the cooler times of year. It's hotter than the surface of the sun much of the time (actually it's the humidity). And marvel at how fresh water is no issue at all in such a parched place (narrator: abundant - real - fossil fuel energy, desalination, voila). If only such things could find their way to America. You won't read this Insom, but I'll say it still.
You don't learn love from the world. The world is full of miserable, terrible, unspeakable hate and self-centeredness. It's vile and disgusting and without any merit of its own. Love isn't something that makes you happy or giddy or starry-eyed. Love is the very thing that is the antithesis to misery, it is the hole that there is another way, another life beyond, and it comes from the One enthroned in Heaven. Can you find people that have felt that love? Sure. Hundreds of millions, billions even. But they didn't get it from a person who just intrinsically was possessing of it by luck of the draw, who then transferred it by means of a pat on the back or a kind word. They got it from the fount. And you can too. And then you can practice it. Like playing with a new gadget, and it will surprise you, because it's not something you have previously possessed. And you'll probably mess up with it. But because it is wholly good, even your errors will be understood. Or maybe I'm mistaken. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at February 27, 2023 09:53 PM (u/zpy) 436

>>> 278 I was just reading a sad, but not surprising twitter thread about South Africa, written by a resident.

Had a good friend that was in an end of life coma years ago. Her husband fought taking her off life support for nine days. She called from the Mississippi Gulf coast to wish me a happy birthday just last week. You never know. Neither do they.

SA doesn't have a military? If there is a reason for Martial Law , what's being described is definitely it.

Posted by: polynikes at February 27, 2023 09:58 PM (8T0gw) the man who wrote the twitter thread said that members of the SA military have to provide their own clothing, their own weapons, and their own ammo. It's completely broke. So, of course, obviously only gangbangers are in the so-called "military" now. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 27, 2023 10:03 PM (r46W7) 446

I am making $90 an hour working from home. i was greatly surprised at the same time as my neighbour advised me she changed into averaging $100 however I see the way it works now. I experience mass freedom now that I'm my non-public boss.
