I have a big black telephone set from the 60s, its heavy and sturdy. Still works but it doesn't ring any more. Probably could fix it but I don't have a land line any more. Its part of the desk display in my room with all old timey stuff on it. I need to find an old typewriter to put on there too, doesn't matter if it works. And one of those old desk blotters.

Old rotary phones have sort of become a thing. I'm sort of into that. Down here in Miley's house, I have a genuine (say that in Mr. Haney's voice) cherry red WE 554 wall phone in the kitchen.
Also have a genuine '70s era WE 500, black, the phone of my childhood in the '70s.
My next item will be WE 202, with a real subset. Those get a bit pricey.

You could get them, maybe with a wink and nod from a lineman you knew well. I remember as a little boy, one of the linemen gave me some worn out parts to play with. I remember he replaced the dial unit on my grandmother's phone, and gave me the old one to play with. He gave me some handset parts he replaced as well.
My father, somewhere, has an old WE 302, the one he had in the house before I was born, when the get a new 500. I can't find it, but it's there somewhere.

I'm even wondering why at this point, but not quite sure what we'd say instead. Punch the number? We've probably already moved on by saying "call so and so".
I think it was around 1973-4 some friends had a phone with push buttons, and I though that was the coolest thing ever. Then again, I remember party lines (in the SF Bay Area), and the town's prefix was a word, not sure if it really made anything easier to remember. WHitecliff-8, XXXX. Man, the world has changed.

Incidentally, I did contact her last ex, her children's dad, after the divorce was final. He was very cordial, I wasn't expecting that, but since she left me I started to realize he wasn't the monster she made HIM out to be, and now we have something in common.
Mainly, we both love his daughters, and want to see them heal from the damage their mom has done.

You can get USB 3.5" floppy units. I have one.
I've also got some old 5 1/4" drives. YOu can still right those up to work, with the right interface equipment, I think.

It's the cash registers that started it. It tells you what change to give after you enter the amount that was given to you. Good for you getting clear of all this. I've had to deal with the alienation campaign stuff as well - directed both at my social circle (which evaporated) and my kids (which luckily was not ultimately successful. Having to deal with that whole thing is a nightmare.

Yep, they did - and the fast food places are the worst. A button for everything. Having been 29 for so long, I learned the ropes on an actual 40's era "cha-ching" register with the pop-up numbers (and no sale!) at the hardware store. We did have a modern electric one as well, but I liked the old mechanical one. Both required you to use your brain when it came to change though. So that was one of the first things I learned, and could still do it today. Sadly, about the only thing I can still do today I could do when I was 17.

In the Western Electric libraries, and now, maybe publicly, you could access the studies the guys did to determine the layout of the pushbutton number pad. The study was very in depth and took into account way more human body measurements and capabilities than I even knew existed. It was fascinating.

Luckily, I had no kids. But I sure AF found out who my real friends were. F them all. They finally figured it out after a few years, but they're all dead to me. I had my ex's assistant who gave me living hell towards the end come back and apologize a year later, she was having a serious health crisis and wanted to come clean before she passed (I forgave her and luckily she's in remission), and spilled the beans on things I only suspected. However, finding out that my divorce lawyer is besties with the ex is not something I expected. Not sure if there's recourse (I need to prove they were besties before I'm guessing), but now a lot of things make sense. And why I came out with the short end of the stick. I'm lucky I got out with anything at all.

Note the Contempora had a rotary dial in the handset. This was smaller diameter design (to fit reasonably in the handset without being too bulky).
It used a movable finger stop to allow for the smaller diameter.
These and some of the Princesses had lighted dials. THe original designs used a low voltage AC circuit to power the light, driven off a transformer that had to plug in the wall. They even had a special RJ-xx spec for a modular jack that used an extra pair for the low voltage AC.
Later designs switched to LEDs that could be powered right off the phone line DC.

They made a number of these no dial units. They were "extension-only". You could pick up, but you couldn't dial out. It was cheaper than a full extension. You'll see some of the no-dial units being offered.

At one time, they even put in a mechanical delay on the hook-switch mechanism to prevent you from making and breaking fast enough to emulate dial pulses.
You could have luck with that with the lower digits. The pulse standard was 10 +/-2 pulses per second. Digit 0 was 10 pulses.
To dial a number like, 999-9000, you'd have to be pretty damned fast. But a number like 222-1111, you could do it easily.

The thing about resilience though, is that there's never a clear one to one correlation. Lots of people are exposed to abuse and neglect as children, and somehow rise above it. Often due to other people in their lives, showing them real love, even when the parents/caregivers don't/won't.
I'd say if you're asking the question "am I capable of loving the way other people do," the answer is yes. Or maybe not just like other people, because you know better than anyone, there was damage. You were harmed. But you weren't broken. Not by a long shot.

It could reach 50% THIS YEAR... now, seeing as how the Government does not produce ANYTHING... does not create ANYTHING... that means that half of your economy, is wasted motion.
20% of GDP as Government spending seems to be the historic sweet spot for a good economy.

That didn't last long. Turns out that the what we now call "phone etiquette" of teenaged boys wasn't the best in the world.

The eternal dumpster fire that is Wikipedia says it's pronounced "KOT-bee." Which makes me think the English version is more of a transliteration than a phonetic spelling.

My friend's family had a party line, and I had to make sure the line was clear before I dialed home. The had one of them fancy ones with the dial (Our number was BR 549). Had an aunt in Austin NV who had to click the button to get a hold of the operator to make an outside call.
We were townies. Nothing but the best for us rich folks.

Recos if you go - do the tour over to Ras al Khaimah on the Indian Ocean. Also do the tour of the old town in Sharjah (right next to Dubai, really just different part of same urban conglomeration). And check out the gold souk. If you can choose, go in the cooler times of year. It's hotter than the surface of the sun much of the time (actually it's the humidity).
And marvel at how fresh water is no issue at all in such a parched place (narrator: abundant - real - fossil fuel energy, desalination, voila). If only such things could find their way to America.

When I walked in the door (a smallish side door, not a main one) right in front of me was an Orange Julius counter. Hadn't seen once since I was a kid. That was something. I did get the signature beverage before moving on.
And if you're going to Dubai, allocate 3-4 days and pop down to Oman. Very different and a great place to visit.

To this day, I have slight nerve damage in my right elbow, near the funny bone, from some time in the early 80s when my sister was swinging a phone receiver by the twisty cord and hit my elbow with it. And then you can practice it. Like playing with a new gadget, and it will surprise you, because it's not something you have previously possessed. And you'll probably mess up with it. But because it is wholly good, even your errors will be understood.
