NPR To Lay Off 10% of Staff In Cuts Equal to Those That Followed the 2008 Great Recession

This Biden Economy is the bomb!!!

NPR's chief executive announced the network would lay off roughly 10% of its current workforce -- at least 100 people -- and eliminate most vacant positions. CEO John Lansing cited the erosion of advertising dollars, particularly for NPR podcasts, and the tough financial outlook for the media industry more generally.

Literally everyone has a podcast now. My neighbor's cat has a podcast. It's called Meowraar. It's not bad, he's pretty based for a cat. Kind of racist against birds, though.

Someone's selling a T-shirt that reads "I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PODCAST" and I thought about buying one but then I realized: this will offend far too many people.

"When we say we are eliminating filled positions, we are talking about our colleagues - people whose skills, spirit and talents help make NPR what it is today," Lansing wrote in a memo to staff today. "This will be a major loss."

Spirit? Sounds like code for "The DEI staff is taking a big hit."

But alas, no.

On an annual budget of roughly $300 million, Lansing says, revenues are likely to fall short by close to $30 million, although that gap could reach $32 million.

"We're not seeing signs of a recovery in the advertising market," Lansing says in an interview. "Nothing is nailed down yet except the principles and what we know we have to reach."

The leftwing media is eating sh!t all over:

The layoffs are in keeping with an increasingly grim landscape for media companies over recent months. Vox Media cut jobs by 7%; Gannett and Spotify by 6%. The Washington Post, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, eliminated its Sunday magazine and a handful of other jobs. After becoming part of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN cut hundreds of jobs and killed off its brand-new streaming service, CNN+.

As I mentioned glumly in the comments yesterday, the advertising market has crashed. It's hitting me, too. It's hitting everyone.

But I'm glad it's hitting them.

Tech companies that also rely heavily on advertising are undergoing layoffs too. Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have announced more than 50,000 job cuts combined in just the past few months

...

He also vowed to make sure job cuts do not fall disproportionately on employees of color.

Good, fire all the white staffers who've been there for years. This is what they urge for others; let them enjoy the benefits of DEI hiring.

Speaking of diseased leftwing media legacies that deserve to be put out of their misery: Megyn Kelly gave a rousing call for LeMon's #Cancellation.

LeMon has lorded over everyone as King of Woke Morality and demanded the #Cancellation of everyone else.

She mentions that Don LeMon used to say very un-Woke things before he became Woke -- things he'd now call you a N@zi for saying.

She's not kidding around. Here's Don LeMon in his White Supremacist days, before he found that he got more attention as a Woke Supremacist.

Don LeMon also went through a phase when he was gleefully using the n-word, including holding up a large sign on CNN with the n-word spelled out in two foot tall letters.

What NPR is today is an enterprise that's running out of money and can't survive in its current form, and so is laying off lots of people.

Unemployment sucks, and I don't usually relish it when it happens or gloat about it.

But not in media. Every media job lost is a net benefit to our civilization. The more the merrier. Yes, it will suck for those individuals but those individuals are working in the service of evil and it is better to have as few people as possible working in that service. I am *thrilled* to hear news like this. Bring it on. Amplify it. Make it more.

I've got six months, I think, before it hits me. Either that or 18 months, likely not in the middle area. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. It would be suicidal to fire engineers or systems administrators or effective managers instead of DEI drones in HR, but that's what I suspect will happen. 1-2 HR drones will be dropped to make it look good, but it will be white women. If there are any white men in HR, it will be them instead.

We're not in a tech recession yet, but I strongly suspect that one is coming. Most of the tech layoffs have been undoing some of the absurd payroll bloat that tech companies amassed during COVID. If it continues at large scale, it'll be into tech recession territory.

That will have interesting consequences, given how much narrative enforcement big tech does, and how much of the control infrastructure is run by them.

91 70 As I mentioned glumly in the comments yesterday, the advertising market has crashed. It's hitting me, too. It's hitting everyone.

Basically advertisers believed the hype about online advertising and thought it would be super valuable and learned that is not. So yeah, its a kick in the pills for guys like you as advertisers stop paying as much because they aren't earning much.

There's also advertising on more platforms now. Every public area is festooned with digital screens showing ads. It's annoying as fuck, but you can't avoid them. And a lot of ad dollars are going to "influencers" and other forms of alternative promotion. There's only so many ad dollars to go around. So some types of ads have to be cut.

139 I think this is mostly a purge.

It started with Musk in twitter. The other tech companies understood that the easiest way to stay competitive and efficient is to cut the bottom 10%.

This was standard management practice thanks to Jack Welch at GE and all his acolytes. If you run a big company and do not have regular layoffs, you are nuts.

But I think it is spreading, not for efficiency, but as a loyalty purge.

144 @52 This must be true, in the small markets at least, nationwide. My local NPR (Radio) station was just terrific for many kinds of music, and local music programming and commentary. During the Clinton years, National inserted itself and doubled the time spent in 'news' and political content, and they lost a lot of fans.

You don't have to go all the way back to remember when a failure to meet "Pledge Week" finances meant that the pledge program got extended until--you--gave. I suppose, since they never have a new idea in a govt venture, that this will return and get worse.

The TV side was much more 'flexible,' and went over to mixed content and 1-800 golden oldies ads years ago. I don't even think they have the same 'administrators.'

One way to look at it is to examine your budget. How many streaming platforms are you paying for right now?

Could you cut one and donate that money to AoSHQ instead? You probably get *at least* as much value for your dollars here...

163 >>> 139 I think this is mostly a purge.

NPR? Really - are they hurting for sponsors, or are they purging. You tell me.

The sun set a minute more. "He was the devil. He was a Jew."
"Ain't she a Jew? Or what do you call it, a 'Jewess?'"
"Don't matter. Anyway, he was a rock and roller, and got a bunch of girls. I think that bothered her."
"It's not the kind of music I would listen to."
"Me neither."
"Me neither."
A pause.
"I wonder if she fell in love with him because he disdained her. Women will do that, fall in love with a guy who walks on her."
"They will."

He was genuinely flummoxed as to why Ryan's Daughter wasn't up to par with his earlier films, so he invited a bunch of critics (including Kael) to meet him to discuss it. They proceeded to just shit on him for something like two hours.

I find critics useful, but holy shit, dude...that was awful. Never mind that he's the man who made Lawrence of Arabia and they're just the ones who sit around and tell people to watch it, that's just shitty behavior in genearl.

What always came back as justification was an ethereal argument about "exposure" and "views". I suppose that works so long as nobody asks for a financial analysis to back it up. You expect to get something back in return for those dollars spent, in the way of your core business. It's meant to be an investment in that endeavor, not an in kind contribution to your political philosophy justified through pathos pleas to an ever willing group of your sycophants. Now, things are getting tough irrespective of what BLS vomits into the surveys, and the first thing to go (behind people who are dead weight) is the bullshit political charity disguised as "advertising".

219 Missed the mask/collapse of science post, but note that the lack of efficacy for face coverings in preventing transmission of influenza-like illnesses had been studied for nearly 70 years when C19 hit. The casual, instant statement of the loathsome Fauci along these lines at the outset was natural and real, since this was the settled understanding of the situation.

The Danish study in summer 2020 was making the data rubble bounce, since its outcome was easily predictable. The near impossibility of getting it published, however, nicely highlighted the lysenkoist, unscientific collapse of public health science as revealed by the C19 episode.

So the Cochrane meta-study is great and welcome, but even a tiny bit of subject literacy and effort yielded the same conclusions at the very start of The Great Idiocy. CDC itself published a meta-study in May 2020 - just about the time they reversed, without evidence, their "guidance" on the matter - which really is "chef's kiss" as to how absurd and unhinged the CDC and public health science generally has become.

Online its just a banner to the side or at the top, and you can just pretend it doesn't exist while you browse and do what you want.

We were detained once by the Polizei outside a local German establishment for "fighting" with some locals. But it was more like wrestling and when they arrived we were all sharing a drink and laughing. In fact one of the locals pissed on the Polizei's tire for bothering us.

314 That is a good point, advertisers are moving around trying to find somewhere that works. Some places they advertise, they know doesn't work but are loyal to the business or cause (aka why huge companies advertise on CNN). Others they just are trying to find where advertising actually gets results and success which is increasingly difficult online.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 24, 2023 03:20 PM (0hOvj)

I imagine the best way is to contact the streamer directly for the audience they like and have them write and perform the ad. This does what Youtube claims they did for them but never did and probably save tons of money on production.

That probably is the case, especially these days with edibles. I mean, there might be some connection directly with THC, but there's almost no study done on that for some reason.

I am strongly inclined to believe that there are real, good health benefits that can be found from marijuana, but nobody seems to be interested in doing anything except researching either how great it is or how awful it is.

I read an article a few years back about how it was a standard practice on Youtube videos of little girls for pedos to share time codes of a flash of underwear or something they found hot. Youtube knew about this but did nothing for a long time until forced to.

Its like Twitter, supposedly they had hosts of pedo accounts on there but were so busy banning and restricting conservatives they didn't do anything about the scum.

I think it varies a great deal person to person. Some have extremely strong pyschological addiction or social problems (I always had a joint when I did this). Some break off easy. My dad smoked for years in the air force and then he just stopped one day. He said once in a while he'd get the urge to have a smoke, but otherwise nothing.

I found a cast aluminum frying pan among some antiques once, and thought oh boy this will be great. Turned out, by the time you use enough aluminum to achieve the thermal mass you use for iron cookery, it weighs about the same. And that is probably why backpackers' recipes don't use dutch ovens much.

Lots of boiling bags and freeze-dried packets there.
