Biden Steered $36 Billion In Taxpayer Money Into Teamster Union Pension Funds

Not only did he take our retirement money and use it to pay off his union backers, but he also probably helped his union cronies avoid prosecution, because, had those pension funds run out of money as they would have without this semi-secret taxpayer bailout, there would certainly have been some legal attention devoted to the question, WHERE DID THE MONEY GO?

But now the money is in the accounts where it was supposed to be all along so thanks to Joe Biden -- by which I mean, thanks to the US taxpayer, who was never consulted about any of this -- none of Joe Biden's union cronies have to worry about any forensic accounting investigations or prosecutions.

And this sets a nice precedent for when all the rest of the unions' pensions begin failing one after the other -- you'll just have to pay for it all.

They'll just take your retirement funds to "shore up" the unions' retirement funds.

Isn't that the right thing to do? Aren't we all in this together?

This has been the plan all along. This has been the plan for the past 30 years, when the unions realized they had spent all the money they were supposed to put into the pension funds on present benefits (and illegal payouts to the union officials).

And now the plan goes into effect.

Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist:

"The largest private pension bailout in American history" gave each beneficiary of the Central States Pension Fund nearly $100,000.

Can Americans be bribed with their own money? The powers that be are certainly putting that question to the test. In recent years, we've seen inflation-inducing cash giveaways associated with "Covid relief." We've seen the ongoing attempts at profoundly inequitable student loan forgiveness. In December, we saw a $1.7 trillion pork pie omnibus appropriations bill passed by a Congress that had no time to read it.

Lost in all of this has been one spectacular giveaway: $100,000 per beneficiary of the Central States Pension Fund (CSPF). The fund provides pension benefits to nearly 360,000 private-sector workers and retirees, mostly Teamsters Union members. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, called the deal out in December, noting it was "the largest private pension bailout in American history" that benefited only "a tiny minority of workers." He suggested it resulted from the insanity of "allowing those who mismanaged pensions to determine whether their funds qualify for taxpayer assistance with no safeguards."

The $36 billion comes almost two years after the passage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. That "rescue" was the Biden administration's Covid spending bonanza. Biden signed it into law in the spring of 2021, when the economy was already well into recovery. The housing market was booming. The stock market was on a steady upward climb. It was obvious that the "rescue" would cause inflation. It was obvious Democrats were taking advantage of an opportunity to give away public largesse. And did they ever.

Lest we doubt the ongoing influence of the Teamsters in American politics, the recent $36 billion giveaway says it all. It says to the union bosses, who make up half of the CSPF board: "You can watch the pension fund's health decline for decades. You can make unrealistic promises to employees. You can keep the plan below 75 percent funded. You can depend on a pyramid concept where imaginary new members keep coming in to pay for retired members. None of that matters now. The politicians you own will bail you out with the public's money. In fact, you can take such largesse that union workers in other multi-employer plans get left with only crumbs. Write yourself a check. And, as a bonus, we won't ask you to change anything."

Workers of the world are not united here. This is a cash grab benefiting one group of roughly 360,000 (3 percent) of the 11 million participants in the multi-employer plans.

And Covid, schmovid. Even before the panic and the lockdowns, the Congressional Research Service reported that the multi-employer pensions were underfunded by $650 billion. In 2018, CSPF had been projected to reach insolvency by 2025.

Just wait until the public sector unions pension funds start failing!

Chicago's public sector unions' pension funds have barely any money in them! Neither do Detroit's!

And they have promised to pay out billions and billions!

Guess who's going to be funding those?!

No, Guess!

You're gonna love the answer!

Oh, they'll try. I have it as even money right now as to whether an attempted bailout of public retirement plans or Medicare will trigger the fiscal crisis first.

CalPERS alone would cripple the FedGov if the feds try to bail it out. CalPERS - optimistically - is about $200 billion in the hole. Many other states are even worse in terms of proportions. CalPERS is a huge system, but it's something like 80% funded last time I checked. The deficit is huge in dollar terms, but other states are way worse in relative terms.

It cannot be afforded. If we try to, it will cause a fiscal crisis almost immediately.

Heh. Something tells me that the Republican House will not be fiscal hawks. I think they will, however, pretend.

:: dusts off crystal ball ::
This autumn, they will send some budget bill to the Senate. That bill will be lousy, but way less lousy than we have seen recently. The Senate will fight over it. McConnell and Schumer will direct their caucuses to make various loud noises. Eventually, they will pass the bill "under duress" and "for the good of the country." Then Biden will veto the bill. A week after that, the HoR will pass an appalling mess of a bill to avoid a "government shutdown" in these trying times. The Senate will pass it within four hours and Biden will immediately sign it. If the House is feeling obstinate, they may let it go into a "shutdown battle" and pass the same bill a week later.

That will still engender a fiscal crisis if they try it. It will be a different type - and a type more likely to result in violence, as the currency starts to collapse without a global backstop when international settlements in non-dollar currencies suddenly become much more popular - but it will still happen.

A fiscal crisis is inevitable at this point, unless we end up with some new industrial revolution to bail us out of the excess. I don't see one in the offing (though people rarely do), but barring that, a fiscal calamity is inevitable given our government's behavior. What form it will take is an open question.

And that regulation was slapped on trains late in the Obama administration, wasn't necessary or useful.

After: More than 80,000 workers and retirees in MPRA plans who, through no fault of their own, had their pension benefits cut, are eligible to have those benefits fully reinstated – with their plans solvent through 2051. The Special Financial Assistance program ensures all MPRA plans that were forced to cut benefits are able to restore those cuts in full, maintain full benefits into the foreseeable future, and be projected to remain indefinitely solvent.

The medication curbs your desire to eat, so it has been remarkably easy. It has something to do with overcoming insulin resistance. "Willpower" is practically automatic. I am thrilled, my doctor is thrilled. Rebecca, who is pre-diabetic, has been on it right along with me, and she has lost an impressive amount of weight as well, which is very hard for most people with Down syndrome to do.

Surprisingly enough, people who aren't diabetic tend to lose more weight on these medications than people who have already developed TIID, so there is something to the "preemptive" side of the equation - it's why they are fast-tracking research into using these drugs for weight loss.

I FINALLY might be able to not be morbidly obese - and even my mother once commented that she was amazed at how little I ate to be so big. It's all to do with insulin resistance - our 3rd daughter has PCOS, and we aren't sure what caused it, but she started gaining weight in earnest AFTER she started having trouble with that.

229 Oh, they slipped one in the back door of the omnibus. FDA can ban doctors from prescribing drugs and devices for specific uses:

"Since the new provision lets the FDA skirt the ban on interfering with the practice of medicine by banning devices for particular uses, the agency will likely claim this as a precedent allowing it to ban off-label uses of drugs as well," wrote Joel Zinberg, associate clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine and former Columbia law , who accused the FDA of "unwarranted intrusion into the physician-patient relationship."

231 Liquidate all public sector pension funds and put them all on Social Security, just like the rest of us. There is no rational reason why the public sector should get deals that no private sector employee would ever get. You want to fix Social Security. . . . . .put all the politicians and all public sector employees on it and it will get fixed.

Bunch of miserable, thieving, cocksuckers they are.

234 Well we already bailed out the GM pension under Barky. I would have wagered a modest amount that other union pensions had been infused with cash back then as well. In fact I think the commiecrats long ago wrote some kind of law guaranteeing pensions. It is probably only supposed to be used for company pensions where the company went broke, thanks to off-shoring, like the steel mills.

Being 29, but still several years from retirement my future is probably bleak. I'll be getting old and feeble for the after the crash period when everything goes back to trading labor or goods for one's daily meal and it will be hard for me to hang on to whatever goods I possess unless I find a benevolent strong man who lets me into the compound in exchange for them.

Sure, but that's a bad way to compare because inflation and growth. The better ways to compare are requally devastating, though.

That year, the GDP was $425.5 billion, so the federal budget was 17.6% of GDP. That budget was smaller than revenue - one of the few times in American history that the government ran a budget surplus (undone bigly in 1958-1959, partly due to the big recession in 1957). The total debt at that time was $273 billion, or 64% of GDP.

In 2022, GDP was $26.13 trillion and total federal spending was about $5.05 trillion, or 19.3%. The deficit was $1.375 trillion. Total debt was $30.82 trillion, or 117.9% of GDP.

What a difference one working lifetime makes.

They were still afraid because we were in a new world. The wild upswing in debt and total budget size happened after we left the golf standard and everything started to float. There's a reason we also had crippling inflation when that happened. Like today, there was a lot of funny money in the system that couldn't be papered over anymore and by the time we came out of it, everything had reset at a permanently higher level in dollar terms.

In addition, the Boomers were entering their peak earning years and productivity on average was getting a lot better pretty quickly, and that generated vast amounts of economic activity so there was also more to tax and spend away.

I dunno if there's a line item for it, but we've shat about $26.5 billion onto Ukraine in straight cash. That's about 15% of their 2021 GDP. Total assistance of around $200 billion exceeds their 2021 GDP, but just the cash is a staggering amount when considered proportionally.

Yup. With Red China, the lingo used to describe it is the "Demographic Dividend." We had one, too (as did most of the rest of the world) with the Boomers. We *should* have had a second when the next mega-generation - the Millennials - came online. We didn't get it, because of persistently high underemployment. The Millennials were starting to hit the job market in earnest in 2006, with the big upswing happening from about 2010-2015. The economy sucked the big one, which made employment harder even for the qualified people and put a ton of Millennials in a lower-earnings environment than they expected. That is continuing and will keep on continuing until they retire. The Millennials will never be as productive as they should have been on paper, partly due to the economy at the start.
