Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: CFL Bulbs That Were Once Promoted By Environmental Activists Are Now Being Banned By the Same PeopleBarely 15 years after the government started banning incandescent light bulbs in favor of compact fluorescent bulbs – to save the planet - CFL bulbs are now being banned because they are toxic and damaging to the environment. Huh. Who knew. Also, who could have ever predicted that the environmental activists promoting those little mercury bombs might someday reverse course? Maybe in 15 years the greens will realize just how environmentally destructive electric vehicles are and start banning those too. I have often made the comment (including on a recent Cut Jib Newsletter podcast) that the various state and federal bans on gas-powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles are similar to the government ban on incandescent light bulbs in favor of CFL bulbs. The government chose a product to kill off, and the government also chose its successor. Consumers and the marketplace chose differently. As it turned out, incandescent bulbs have been largely replaced, but not by CFLs. LED bulbs won consumers over instead. There were so many reasons that consumers hated CFL bulbs, from the awful color light they produce, to the illumination time it takes before they produce light, to their ineffectiveness in cold weather. They are also potentially toxic if they break due to the mercury they contain. Along those same lines, it’s possible that within 20 years cars will be propelled differently than they are now. Maybe all cars will be plug-in hybrids that still allow gas propulsion for long distance travel, or perhaps they’ll run on hydrogen. I don’t know. But what I do know is that the government-mandated EV will never be anything but a niche product, and few if any people will be driving them…if they’re even still allowed on the road. Between their combustibility and the massive strip mining required to produce the materials needed for EVs, there is nothing green about them. Back to CFL bulbs, the same green government types that were mandating them not even 20 years ago are now banning them. In fact, they’re not just banning them, they’re now treating CFL bulbs like toxic hazmat. Vermont to become first state to ban CFL lightbulb sales [The Hill – 02/08/2023]Old or used CFL bulbs…cannot be discarded in the trash, but must be brought to a collection site or recycling center, Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation reiterated. All mercury-containing bulbs also require special handling during disposal, as they can release harmful mercury vapor if broken or crushed. If a CFL bulb breaks, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation suggests clearing the room immediately, opening windows or doors, closing all interior vents, and letting the room air out for at least 15 minutes before attempting to clean up any broken pieces. Do not use a vacuum, “as this may spread any mercury vapor,” the agency writes.Vermont may have been first, but California’s ban on CFL bulbs is less than a year away. Where California goes, the rest of the nation’s leftists will soon follow. California Bans CFL Light Bulbs [tcpi.com – 11/21/2022] CFL light bulb bans started making their way through state legislatures last year, and California has become the second state to sign one into law. Vermont’s light bulb ban passed in May, forbidding sales of CFLs as of February 2023. California’s phase-out begins in January 2024.Similar to how it played out with the light bulb wars, it will be funny to see today’s passionate EV advocates become tomorrow’s EV prohibitionists, and today’s EV fanboys realizing that they are now the target of the politicians who they thought were on their side. Early in our marriage, I might have possibly tried to sneak some of those bulbs into our house one time to save a dollar or two on our utility bill, and to try to minimize the heat being generated inside our house during Texas’ brutal summer. She would not have it, and it was a non-negotiable, no-compromise position of hers. Frankly, that kind of warmed my heart, as she was pretty apolitical at the time, so I saw this as an opportunity to rant about the left’s goals of banning incandescent light bulbs. (In retrospect, I realize that George W. Bush was President at the time, and he was allowing the left-wing permanent bureaucracy to get away with it.) Best of all, when we would go on a weekend getaway to a B&B or a cabin in the woods, we’d have to take a four-pack of 60-watt incandescent bulbs with us just in case there were CFL bulbs in the place we were staying. She wasn’t going to let those awful bulbs ruin the atmosphere! I wish each and every one of you a great weekend, and if you’re looking to, ahem, “set the mood” for a romantic weekend, you might try bringing your true a love a package of incandescent light bulbs.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Huh. Who knew. Back when I was in the Navy, we were required - officially - to dispose of fluorescent bulbs as hazardous waste due to them containing mercury. They never publish the Color Temperature on the bulb packages, only the wattage. And you're lucky if you find the packaging that'll give the equivalent wattage to the old 3200k Tungsten bulbs.
Problem with both CFLs and LEDs, is they'd transmit a blend of colors to try to simulate either the old Tungsten bulbs, or "Daylight", but (again) would not print the actual Color Temperature on the damn package. Pro-Tip: You can have a "Tungsten Balanced" LED, but that won't exist in CFLville. You can have a pretty damn good "Daylight" LED, but the CFL will have a greenish cast that true 5200k "Daylight" lacks. Wishcasting: Please PLEASE... ... As it turned out, incandescent bulbs have been largely replaced, but not by CFLs. LED bulbs won consumers over instead. ...
++++ This is one of the reasons - like the catalytic converter - that tyrants and other do-gooders remain convinced that everything will always work out. The reason for banning incandescent bulbs was run-of-the-mill corporatism (GE wanted to sell expensive CFLs). CFLs were a terrible solution to the problem that they themselves created. Almost everyone hated CFLs, which created a vast market that did not exist for a viable light bulb replacement. LED development went parabolic and they stormed into the vast market, killing both CFLs and incandescent bulbs - but that development probably wouldn't have happened, or would have happened much later if not for the ban in the first place. "See? It worked out! The engineers saved us again, as they always do! We got rid of those environmentally-hostile incandescent bulbs and the engineers and the market found a viable alternative that people actually like. We're geniuses!" I disassemble the CFL's, salvage some of the electronic components from their little ballast circuits, and dispose of the tube in the trash. The amount of mercury in these things is practically negligible. Guess what? Regular old linear fluorescent tubes contain a trace of mercury, too. There has to be a little bit to get the gas discharge in the tube started.
If a fluorescent tube, either kind, is broken, a tiny amount of liquid mercury may escape as tiny droplets. Oxygen in the air reacts with liquid mercury to form mercurous oxide and/or mercuric oxide. Both are solids. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 24, 2023 11:17 AM (tkR6S) 97

Watching the grocery bag spectacle was illuminating, to say the least. Ban paper bags to save the planet, and move to petroleum based plastic bags. Oh, wait, the plastic bags are not only petroleum based, they are piling up because they don't degrade fast enough.
Meanwhile, the paper bags were made from pine trees, which are grown as a row crop, and consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen while they grow. Literally an environmentally responsible process. And now, at end stage, we cannot go back and use pine trees to make paper grocery bags because we are burning the trees to keep warm after banning nuclear and natural gas for heating, at least in Europe. One set of under-cabinet lights in my kitchen are just on continuously. I never have to stumble around in the dark, they aren't hot and they cost next to nothing to run, My favorite thing about LED bulbs, though - bulbs that delivered everything CFLs promised but failed to deliver - is the longevity. When my parents bought a new house and retired a few years ago, I went through their house and replaced every bulb with an LED, no exceptions. I don't want them on ladders changing light bulbs. They've had only one bulb fail, and that was because of a severe and weird electrical problem (one hot leg coming from the pole failed, leaving them with erratic power in the house). I don't like ladders, either, and so I did all of mine up-front, too. The years and years of lifespan on those bulbs kicks ass. They're selling the same old movies one more time, and it's not to the general mass market, it's to collectors. Collectors are driving these sorts of things, I think. It's why a small label like Arrow can release The Last Starfighter on 4K, just a couple of years after they released their Blu-ray and a decade after Universal released a Blu-ray. The collector market will eat it up at high enough prices and high enough levels to justify the investment. I remember when 4K was a huge gamble. The internal rep from Kino Lorber was extremely reticent about their first 4K (Hannibal), but once it went to market. He was talking about it possibly being the only 4K they ever released if it didn't sell well. Now, they're releasing stuff like Bad Lieutenant on 4K. It's generally pretty easy to fix a "water saving" shower head, too. Some of them even have a removable flow restrictor disk, maybe with a "warning" akin to "do not remove the disk or the shower will use more water" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). If not, a couple of minutes with a drill will generally solve the problem. I personally think that modern, QUALITY LEDs are superior to incandescents in pretty much every way, other than maybe for special mood lighting. The $1 bargain bin LEDs, though, not so much. The curly bulbs are, and always have been, utter trash -- actually worse than trash, since you're not even allowed to throw them in the trash. Unrelated: apparently Warner Broz is busy working on a woke reboot of Lord of the Rings (the main series, not that made-up travesty that was recently on Amazon). At least this is apparently going to be a new trilogy, rather than them going back and "updating" the original. I'm already making plans to avoid it, since I already know it's going to suck. Ha! I did a facility-wide LED fixture upgrade for a company not too long ago. Over 1700 fixtures, plus working lamps, plus the inventory of spare fixtures, ballasts, bulbs, etc.
Placed all of these discontinued devices into skids, on pallets and packaged them for transport to a recycling center. When management was notified that the old equipment was ready for disposal, they looked into it and then balked due to the added cost that nobody factored into the project for handling refuse. So these items where strategically hidden at the far reaches of the property where they sat, exposed to the elements until a hail storm rolled in and demolished everything into the soil. Let's look at plastic bags. They cost less to make then paper bags and don't require you to cut down trees - so at first the left loved them.
Then they decided the peasants were using too many of them... So first...we must recycle them! Keep in mind, they work fine in a landfill, they don't even take up space! But then too many plastic recycling facilities showed up near lefty towns...and they stink. And they pollute. Real pollution. So the next solution? Pay China to recycle them. Somehow though all those bags seemed to wind up in the Pacific Ocean instead of China's recycling facilities. I'm sure its the people in Dallas and Chicago not putting those bags in the right bin though...not China throwing them in the ocean. So now? NOW WE MUST BAN THEM! I knew CFLs were environmentally bad when a lamp fell over, breaking one and the instructions for cleanup included airing out the house due to the toxicity of the dust. Then again, that's they way it is with so-called environmentalists; can't think beyond the first step, in this case, CFLs have a higher light output/W. As for longer life, I've not seen it, and disposal of dead bulbs in Kali can only legally be done to stores and sites that accept them.

One of the reason they were so successful is that the stories were extremely well-crafted and layered. Kids liked them and got lots out of them, and the kids' parents liked, them too. So much kid's content is truly unbearable for adults, but Pixar never was and the adults would also get something out of the story - often something that the kids would miss entirely. He tried to reach out, but they never responded to his emails. He just gave up and went back to, apparently, buying NZ politicians to enhance his real estate empire.
Now, WB is making a big deal about Jackson's involvement a few months after it came out that Amazon refused to use him? That's a deliberate decision and message. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, mired in filth and awfulness with Ralph Bakshi at February 24, 2023 11:37 AM (LvTSG) 241

One problem with LEDs -- I feel very strongly that lights should be turned off when leaving a room unless there's a reason to leave them on, such as returning to the room soon. But the lights use so little electricity that you don't really save much by turning them off when not in use. That was my prior excuse for fussing about the lights.
Well, I guess there's still the fact that lights work as information for me -- if I see lights on in a room, it prompts me to remember to finish whatever I was doing in there or it helps me locate my husband. So if random lights are left on, I miss out on those cues. Posted by: Emmie at February 24, 2023 11:40 AM (Emce2) 251

98 Why can't we just go back to vinyl albums and be done with it.
Posted by: Puddinhead -------- Vinyl records varied quite a bit in production quality versus CD's and so the sound obtained varies quite a bit from LP's versus CD's. CD's though, at least mastering of the initial round of them in the 80's and the 90's, lacked the 'warmth' of the old LP's and when used on older material originally mastered for vinyl sounded way too 'bright'. Vinyl has a dead zone (cannot remember the specific range of hz) so producers punched that up in the master tapes to compensate. If the cd sampling came directly from those master tapes without adjusting eq, then they sound artificially bright and harsh. Posted by: whig at February 24, 2023 11:41 AM (4RjCO) 258

But the favorite pro-Ukrainian slur against the Russians is that they are "orcs". It will be very confusing if we are supposed to view orcs as good now. IIRC Tolkein had men of the east which were a mix of Russians/Chinese/Mongols and men of the south that were a mix of Arabic/Persian/Indian. The orcs weren't intended to represent any ethnic group - and he even told two stories about their creation - neither of which would relate them either to black Africans or Russians. Posted by: polynikes at February 24, 2023 11:28 AM Due to the evolving disaster that was a water pipe break in the RMBS Mom's house during that last cold snap, we're replacing quite a few things. We decided to add recessed lights in the kitchen, and that's what the electrician put in. He said you replace the light itself, and that they were good for close to 20 years. Of course, now we're dealing with 80 year old cloth-wrapped wiring. Yeah...that shit's coming out. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at February 24, 2023 11:48 AM (Wnv9h) 297
Changing our light was Round 1 of mass psy ops, making it easier for people in general to "accept" novel information. Look at when our country started accelerating toward our modern social unrest. It coincides nicely with the changing of our lights and therefore our mental and emotional environments.

Not that gay dudes weren't by and large interested in seeing it but that there's (drum roll) not a lot of gay dudes in general.
When AIDS started up in New York City, the New York City Health Department had models showing how rapidly AIDS cases would grow in New York. The number of actual AIDS cases was considerably less than the model's predictions - it turned out that the New York City Health Department had way overestimated the number of practicing male homosexuals in New York. I blame patents.
Patents run 20 years, nowadays. If you look at Air Conditioning, you will notice that the refrigirate gets changed about every 20 years. First, CFCs were replaced with HCFCs (which many chemists said were worse). As for CFLs. I never liked them from the beginning. When I was informed that if you break one on the floor, it officially requires a $300 toxic chemical cleanup. Posted by: Neo at February 24, 2023 11:48 AM (RovqD) 304

There are very many gay- and lesbian-themed movies out there, so they must be successful. But they are not released in theaters or promoted publicly. If you have a service like NetFlix, however, there are 100s of movies and shows made for gays and lesbians.
I think the reason these are successful but the mainstream attempts are not is the content. The mainstream attempts are blatant panders with terrible scripts and questionable casting (Bros). Even die-hard gays don't like that crap. The NetFlix movies have nothing to "prove," so to speak, and don't need to make any statement. They are just good entertainment for homosexuals. Posted by: Elric Blade at February 24, 2023 11:45 AM (iFTx/) I submit these same movies would be more popular on Netflix if they had straight romances...the straight romance films made (which are few and far between) have done wildly good numbers for Netflix vs the gay themed ones. But the gay themes ones give Netflix woke cred... That's not to say there isn't a market for some gay rom com...but that market is about as big as the theatrical rom com market now - practically dead and non-money making without a fun plot or huge stars... I had a collection of old defuncted fluorescent bulbs. We searched around to find out how to recycle them. After about 3 months, we found one site in a 4 county area. Now, I know why most people just put them in a heavy plastic garbage bag, and whack the bag till the bulbs break into small pieces, placing the tied up bag in their normal garbage. Billionaire Thomas Lee, Friend of Clintons, Found Dead From Apparent Suicide Billionaire private equity financier Thomas H. Lee was found dead in his Fifth Avenue Manhattan office on Thursday, an apparent suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. ...In one incredible move, Lee orchestrated the sale of Snapple for $1.7 billion in 1994 two years after he bought it, then made a return of 32 times equity. He was worth $2 billion at his death... After Hillary flamed out in the 2008 primary against Barack Obama, she and Bill went to stay at Lee’s East Hampton estate. He was a political donor and bundler for Hillary Clinton including during her 2016 run. I wrote earlier in the week about the unusual news from the police report on former special advisor to Bill Clinton Mark Middleton who was found to have committed suicide last year. The report showed that he was shot in the chest, but there was reportedly no gun found. Posted by: Intrepid Democratic Underground AoS Liaison at February 24, 2023 11:57 AM (JCZqz) 349

I got bumped up to first on a flight to Japan once. Got the front row seat in a 747, with more space in front of me than some peoples' front yards. As a height advantaged person, I really enjoyed that flight. Space and free booze.

You are far more likely to have a gay man serving you snacks than an attractive woman on any American airline I've been on the past 30 years

My last flight on Delta had a stewardess that looked like Large Marge. The only thing missing was a Marlboro hanging out the side of her mouth. She appeared not be customer focused.

Never bought one of those shitty lights. I had bought a huge stash of incandescent bulbs and used them into the LED period. I love LEDs, because they seem to last a long time, no heat, and can come in different hues.

On a bidness trip to Salt Lake City years ago on NW Orient I ran into a girl I went to elementary school with. She was a gate agent for NW. Very hot. Very touchy-feely. Nothing like when she was 9 or 10 as I recalled.

That stewardess looks like she could make a male passenger feel good with just a smile.
I've some fairly attractive stewardesses on KLM and Swissair. Mind you I was returning from Africa so there was something pleasing about blondness. Posted by: N.Lurker at February 24, 2023 12:03 PM (eGTCV) 371
But the real tell is bugs, moths and etc. The bats used flit around the lamp, collecting their dinner. Not any more, there are no bugs attracted to the LED 'light'. In spite of all of the yammer about color temperature, the fact is that LED's do not produce anything resembling a natural spectrum.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at February 24, 2023 12:01 PM (vNC/Y) ++++ Color temperature is the likely problem. When a lot of places switched to LED street lighting, they went with "daylight" bulbs because the light carries better and improves color clarity. The perceived brightness is greater, and that's good for street lighting. But they have also noted that animal behavior is different, and sometimes plant behavior is different. It's likely that flooding daylight-balanced light out at night has some unintended consequences. It will not surprise me if, when they are replaced, they are replaced with lights in the tungsten or sodium color space. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at February 24, 2023 12:04 PM (t0OGg) 372
That's exactly what they did. However, I read a paper yesterday that seemed a bit more solid. I'll see if I can find it.
Sorry, can't find it. Posted by: Archimedes at February 24, 2023 12:05 PM (eOEVl) 373

I know i'm late but one CFL comment. When they first came out, we received notice from our town that they absolutely could never, ever be thrown in the trash because of the mercury.
What do do with a bulb that didn't work, which we had? We called the town, and they didn't really know either. So they sent out a guy in a diesel pickup truck to take the single CFL bulb off of our hands. Watching the truck belch a little smoke while driving away, I couldn't help but wonder what the carbon balance was on that little transaction. 19 I have hundreds of incandescent light bulbs in storage, enough to last my lifetime.
Posted by: Thomas Paine at February 24, 2023 11:05 AM (lTGtQ) After I replaced all of my incadescent bulbs with LEDs I took the lifetime supply of incandescent bulbs to St. Vincent's. Non-incadescent bulbs don't make economic sense for renters. Posted by: Fox2! at February 24, 2023 12:58 PM (0kjWS) 379
The goal wasn't to make us change to CFLs it was to set the stage for control and rationing electrical light.
The goal isn't to make us switch to EVs. It's it's to ration transportation and control if, when and where we can travel. That's why Dems LOVE trains so much. Nothing scratches that tyrants control of travel better than trains. Posted by: mikethemoose at February 24, 2023 01:01 PM (AmpGx) 380
The other important point about CFLs is to contrast them with LED lights. No mandate was needed for LEDs because they had so many advantages over both CFL and the old incandescent lights. The government CFL mandate was horrible, but then we all switched anyway a short time later because the market found something better. If we ever find a car engine than the ICE in both cost and capabilities, everyone will want to switch anyway. Until then, mandates will not make people switch to electric cars when those cars only work well in such limited conditions.
