Is This Something?

Skinamarink -- the name comes, apparently, from a fable I've never heard of -- is an "analog horror movie," meaning that they make the movie look and sound like it was made using analogue equipment from the 1970s. (A title card at the end of the trailer claims the film is from 1972, before correcting itself to admit it's from 2022.)

Apparently analog horror is a new trend in horror movies. People are making mini-movies on YouTube using these techniques.

The movie is intended to replicate the feeling you had as a kid waking up in the middle of the night without your parents around to comfort you and feeling that something in the house is wrong.

In the movie, two children wake to find their father is absent from the house -- I think their mother is long missing, probably dead -- and that, creepily, all the windows and doors have... disappeared.

Chris Gore reviews it here. He says he likes the movie a lot, and recommends that you don't see it.

I've read some other reviews. Here's what he means: This movie is for a very specific audience. Obviously the movie features children in danger throughout its running time, which is a no-go for many viewers right there.

The movie is all atmosphere and creepy imagery and weird sounds. A lot of times, nothing happens, and people stare at vague shadows trying to make out if something is visible in the shadows or not. That's exactly what happens in real life when you think maybe something's in the bedroom with you, but... people might not want to stare at a dark bit of film for five minutes straight looking for the boogeyman.

I've read that pacing and length are an issue. One guy said that at least 20 minutes could be cut from the one hour and forty minute runtime.

It's highly experimental. There is no story. There is no narrative. There is no explanation whatsoever about what's happening on the screen. There isn't even a "puzzle" aspect that you're supposed to figure out -- you can speculate what the movie's about, but it's just speculation, and there's no right answer. The movie maker doesn't even know what it's about.

The movie is supposed to be as senseless as a nightmare. A narrative is not senseless. A narrative, in fact, is reassuring, because if there's a logic to things, well, at least tells things still make sense.

So if you still feel like seeing it even with all those warnings, then the movie is for you. If not, not.

If you just want to dip a toe in, the guy got his start on YouTube and has a bunch of short creepy mini-movies to sample.

Less divisive, I think, will be this one, Sisu.

Obviously, I'm all about this one!

That movie has been delayed for the fifth time, this time being pushed back from its July release to November. So you know they have a lot of faith in it.

The rumor is that Marvel will unveil its first major gay superhero in this one!

Ooooh! I wonder who it could possibly be!!!

carlmanvers.jpg

That's a real panel from a real Captain Marvel comic. Carol Danvers used to be drawn as a busty, big-assed goddess, but modern Marvel decided that they would Defeat the Male Gaze and draw her as a scrawny "pseudo-trans" character, as Zach calls it. People call this incarnation "Carl Manvers."

In this scene, the joke is that the busty hot actress is playing Carl Manvers in a movie, and ha-ha, those silly Hollywood people think that a woman people are looking at in an entertainment product should be appealing to the Male Gaze. When in reality we know she should look like Blonde McLovin.

So anyway, who could be the character who comes out as lesbian? The Pakistani Muslim teenager from the strict traditional household who is designed to appeal to the Muslim demographic? The black woman that no one has ever seen before because she was in Wandavision for fifteen minutes?

Or the character Marvel's been coding as lesbian for ten years but has not yet had the guts to "commit to the bit" yet?

I think Disney's "Not So Secret Gay Agenda" will finally make it obvious to Carol Danvers what's been obvious to everyone else since the first Obama Administration.

30 That was one of the most underwhelming and least informative trailers I've ever seen. At the point of filming they probably didn't know what the story was, as its been delayed like five times, most recently last week. The only thing about The Marvels I am remotely interested in is Monica Rambeau, who was a very interesting character in the comics. At least, the version I read about, she's probably nothing like that now.

Her hair looks like she slept in it and combed it with a pitchfork, though.

Sure, it looks pretty - almost every modern movie looks pretty - but I have no idea what it's about and none of the people they showed in it look interesting.

The real (well, in the real myth, anyway) Amazons were in fact lesbos who killed men out of hand. They'd call a truce once a year or so to have sex with males from neighboring tribes so they could bear children. Male babies were exposed to die (or, in less bloodthirsty versions of the myth, returned to their fathers).

170 The trailer for Skin-Whatever started interestingly. I love stuff where sounds are used to scare -- there are many such moments in The Exorcist. But then the trailer seemed to go nowhere; and if, as Ace says, the film doesn't either, well, it sounds like a 2023 answer to Blair Witch Project. That one was super-hot when I lived in Denver, but its heyday faded very fast.

172 T2 brought up a really interesting dilemma.

Sarah Connors was acting exactly like what she would have, if what she was saying was true. But what she was saying was crazy and impossible, right? Except how can you know, its massively implausible but nobody knows the future.

And John Connors, despite the incompetent acting by the boy they cast for him, was acting pretty much like a kid in his position would act as well. Where he fell down is that there was no sense of triumph and exultation over finding out his crazy mom was right all along. He should have felt vindicated and happy that he had not believed a lie and had not been raised by a lunatic.

Well, and he showed zero growth into some great leader, even slightly.

>>How many years before we start seeing MCU remakes? Its been 15 years since Iron Man came out. Even longer for The Hulk. We've seen two remakes of Spider-Man, one of the X-Men.

The idea that a company in possession of IP that spans over 50 years, full of 100's of compelling and rich characters and 1000's of story lines would ever have to resort to remakes is preposterous.

But, sadly, that is the state of play where writers can't even be bothered to become familiar with the source material they are ostensibly in charge of crafting stories from.

The civilizations of the Mediterranean were in the habit of leaving records. The Norse Sagas naturally make mention of what they found, even if in semi-mythical form.

Pre-history travel is a different matter since very little survives beyond a certain point. But European travel to the Americas from the last few thousand years? The civilizations primitive enough in Europe to not have any record also had scant means of making such a voyage. Crossing the Atlantic is vastly harder than a voyage between India and Africa(and consequently to virtually anywhere in Asia), and the notion that it was just empty water was no doubt based on failed attempts at exploration.

299 The description of Skinamarink makes me think of The Twilight Zone. Basically, take a theme and run with it in sci-fi form. You're the only one that can see some fey creature while trapped in a plane miles in the sky. What does plastic surgery mean in a world with a different sense of beauty?

In this case, what happens when you and your sibling are suddenly trapped in what seems like your home, without your parents?

Horror nowadays is about the in-your-face porn-like gore ("gorn"), about how messily people can die or are executed. But there's something to be said about more psychological horror; of unease and foreboding. Of what is familiar changing on you, with no explanation why it did so. As if the universe itself was gas-lighting you, telling you, "What do you mean? It's *always* been this way...".

It's also interesting to see new techniques that try to copy old styles, much like "retro" video games that limit their art and playstyles to mimic the 80's and 90's, though usually with more recent features (automaps, savestates/checkpoints, etc.) to ease the pain points from back in the day. Maybe we'll even see 3D animation that mimics old cel-based cartoons.

Take my money. Now.

The only way it could be better is if they also had him killing Russian commie cocksuckers. I mean, it's the same time period. Maybe they could get the Nazi cocksuckers and the Sov cocksuckers to set aside their differences to make up an informal Totalitarian Justice League in an attempt at taking out the Finn badass.

Unsuccessfully, of course.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at February 23, 2023 06:24 PM (n+4am)

301 >much like "retro" video games that limit their art and playstyles

They mostly do that because the bottom has dropped out of the AAA video game market and retro pixel art games are fast, easy and cheap to make. As 3D engines get better and more photorealistic, the resources needed to make the games look good with them skyrocket. For every Fortnite, there's a Battleborn. Publishers don't want to risk it.

>Maybe we'll even see 3D animation that mimics old cel-based cartoons.

Cel Damage for the PS2, Cuphead for last generation, several current JRPGS and the vast majority of anime released in the last ten years does this. It's a fairly easy rendering trick.

302 Skinamarink is 100 minutes of nothing.

Yeah, I sat through all 100 minutes. At a theater.

You could get a tantalizing 12 minutes out of it. That made you wonder things. Honestly, if you go in completely blind, the movie will not help you understand what's going on.

Those who don't like horror movies will be fine, as there is no horror.

Those who don't like children-in-peril will be fine, as they never act like they're in peril, nor do they act like children, nor do they age or require food or to use the bathroom apparently, as the movie takes place over six months.

Phone still works, though. Nobody calls. They call out when they think of it, four days after thei...

304 Don't know if it's been mentioned: "The Marvels" has been delayed until November already (from what I understand, it's the 5th time it's been delayed). "Skinamarink" sucks (this from both my wife and I who love indie horror - including psychological horror - movies). Long on trying to build tension with little (to no) payoff. Even meandering nightmares have payoffs. I understand it wasn't supposed to be a "narrative" and wasn't about a "point," but even then the absolute level of nothingness that movie brings to the table is astounding. Waste of time.
