AMD's new 7745HX laptop CPU looks pretty good. (Tom's Hardware)

The 8 core chip - a separate family with 12 and 16 core versions will come later - is as fast as Intel's 14 core 12900HK from last year, 12% faster than Apple's 12 core M2 Max, and 32% faster than the previous generation 6900HX.

It can't keep up with Intel's new (and power hungry) 24 core 13900HX, but you wouldn't really expect it to. That's the job of the upcoming 12 and 16 core parts.

Will anyone make a laptop based on this chip that isn't horribly flawed in multiple ways?

Need a motherboard for your new Intel workstation CPU which you don't have because they're not out yet?

ASRock has the W790 WS.
Asus has the Pro WS W790 Ace at the low end, and the Pro WS W790E Sage SE at the high end.

The ASRock and the Ace are designed more for the W-2400 range, with four channel RAM and only five PCIe slots, while the Sage is designed specifically for the more expensive W-3400 range of chips.

Couple of things worth knowing: The two families of CPUs use the same socket and the same chipset, and any chip will work in any of these motherboards. If you use a W-2400 chip in the Sage only half the DIMM slots will work, and only four of the seven PCIe slots. On the other hand, if you put a W-3400 in the other boards, everything on the board will work, but half the memory channels and 3/7ths of the PCIe lanes on the CPU won't be wired up to anything.

Overall it's a good deal; you can start with a $359 6 core CPU and scale up to a 56 core CPU without changing motherboards.

The other thing is that memory. AMD Threadripper motherboards let you use either desktop or server memory - not both at the same time, but whichever one makes sense for you. These motherboards use DDR5 server RAM only, and a quick look around regular retailers like Amazon, Newegg, and Micro Center didn't find much of that available. Zero, in fact.

It exists, but going to Kingston directly didn't really help except for telling me they have a four module per customer limit. That Sage motherboard has eight memory channels.
Is Nvidia doing it again? (WCCFTech)

Leaked model numbers from Gigabyte indicate three different models of the RTX 4070 - with 10GB, 12GB, or 16GB of RAM. That necessarily means different bus widths, and likely different performance levels.

The 4070 Ti is a 12GB card already, so a 16GB card seems a bit odd here, but there's already the example of the 3060 which has more RAM than the 3060 Ti, 3070, 3070 Ti, and the regular version of the 3080.

38 I'm off today!! Well, I'm off every Monday so it's a default thing. I'm having a modern problem. Do I want to make Jambalaya or Gumbo? Ingredients are similar. One a stew, the other isn't. Gumbo takes a bit longer to set up but the crockpot does all the cooking. Jambalaya is done in the skillet. Guess I'll figure it out later. I still have to get the veggies for it. I have shrimp and Andouille Sausage. I'll head to the grocery store today for the rest.

Watched the Daytona 500. It was a parade with no passing with the occasional wreck. Hater restrictor plate racing. It's not racing.

I'm so old I remember Virginia celebrating, as a state holiday, Lee-Jackson Day (Bobby Lee and Stonewall Jackson). It was in January and eventually replaced by MLK Day. I can only imagine the shrieks of horror were that holiday today.

Our neighborhood group, whose major purpose is to collect funds to pay to have our streets plowed when it snows and to cut the grass in our little parklet, sometimes has a solid busybody advocate that alla us sign up with one trash removal service in order to cut down on the hustle and bustle of trash pickups throughout the week by multiple companies. No such luck, because the vendors are hyper aggressive about extending lower pickup rates in order to poach customers from one another. I'd sooner have them advocate to reduce delivery hours for package service deliveries, as an amazon prime vehicle often can be seen here practically every hour of every day.

103 It's going to be in the low 70s today. I think a good cleaning of the car interior is on schedule, along with a new cabin air filter. I had been neglecting that for a long time, and a couple changes ago I saw the old one. Made a believer out of me. If the hip is cooperating, I'll do it myself. Good idea. I finished the waxing job on the exterior of my car yesterday and wiped down some of the interior along with a Febreze spray. Don't forget to check the tire pressure. If you think it'll be cold again soon, be sure to give them an extra psi or two, so when they drop they'll still be properly filled.

And check the spare. The compact ones usually require a much higher pressure, like 50-60 psi.

105 I stay on top of the tire pressure. Damn sensors in the KIA seem very sensitive, and the TPMS light (gee, how did we live without those) comes on to annoy you. Actually, the guys at the oil change place check 'em for me every couple weeks. Just drive through, show them my little card, and they air the tires and check everything under the hood for free.

109 Trash pick up. My home town in Ohio had great trash pickup when the city did it. City truck takes it to the city dump. The crews were all black guys, and you couldn't buy them out of their job. Deal was when the route was done, they had their eight hours in. Sometimes in four or five. And they would get the cans from behind the house. Sometimes you might have something on the no pick up list, and a six pack on top of it would assure that it would vanish.

112 Before we moved to Summerville, our Baltimore County trash crew came down the alley once a week.

Not a single one of the three man crew drank alcohol, but loved the fact that every Christmas we gave them each a rather substantial Royal Farms (Convenience store with the best fried chicken and coffee) gift card as thanks for the work that they do.

That same crew still takes care of my MiL's house, and when they see us visiting, they always say hello, and ask how we and our son are doing.

117 Looking at the pile of boxes and brush for bulk pick up this week, I can certainly appreciate the service. Third Monday of each month, whatever fits in a 10 cubic yard space.

In CO, if it wasn't in the lone bin, they wouldn't pick it up and you couldn't have multiple bins. We had one for trash and one for recycling, and you had to pay extra for one for 'yard waste'. And don't even think about putting out more than 3 bags of leaves/grass cuttings.

Wheat made me glad about the service was the prayers for our country, the thoughtful manner of the priest and that there were two young people there. I thought the tall, attractive woman was a teacher at the RC school, but she said she was a high school when I spike to her afterward outside. She told me that her faith is the most important thing to her and she asked me to pray for her ( No, I didn't say I was a minister)
Her name is Grace and she had been accepted to Boston College but really wants to go to Notre Dame. She wants to study Catholic theology and Arabic because she might like to be a diplomat. So if anyone wants to pray for faithful Grace I'm sure she would appreciate it.

134 Tree trimming will happen later this spring. I have two really big oak trees that haven't been pruned and trimmed in the last decade. I'll have half a cord of firewood by the time it's prepped for the street.

The house in CO seems to be showing well, but no offers yet and we're approaching the end of the first month it's been on the market. I planned on it taking 3-6 months to sell but I sure hope I don't have to carry the note for long.

149 Yesterday, as I said, was a good day. I worked out, had a good breakfast and a leisurely pipe, realized I didn't need to go to the grocery, and took a pleasant "Sunday drive" out and away from any parades. Stirling slept with me for my nap, in fact came when I called him. In the afternoon I got the car washed and finished the hand wax job. After dinner, Stirling sat on my lap twice of his own accord; and Miss Linda and I watched the first 3 episodes of a 1973 BBC production written by Christopher Fry about the Bronte family.

Little things, but they all added up to a very pleasant Sunday.

I'm glad eggs keep for a while. On the other hand, the jug of milk Miss Linda twisted my arm into buying expired 4 days ago. I took a whiff, and am not sure of its status, so I left it alone.

I don't buy milk very often. I don't eat cereal and I don't put milk in my coffee; I don't need it.
