First-World Problems...

SadFireplace.jpg

What a sad sight! The weather has been so unpleasantly un-winterlike that I have not had a fire, even though I built that one in preparation for a lovely evening...watching the snow fall and swirl outside the windows while we stay snug and warm.

Well...sort of warm. The fireplace doesn't really help heat the house, but it sure is fun.

And apropos of nothing...has anyone in the Horde ever used his fireplace to cook something?

I grilled a steak during a multi-day power outage many years ago. It was delicious!

[Yeah...I got nothin']

9 Vancouver Washington, Columbus day storm 1962.
We were out of power for over a week and the folks had just put half a cow in the freezer. Sadly, the bbq was destroyed. But we had metal dishes that we used to cook in the fireplace. That was my first lesson in cooking meat. It was delicious.

20 If you cook over a wood fire the pot, pan, or skillet you use will get a coating of soot on it that will be difficult to remove later.
There's an old boy scout trick to avoid it. Rub the outside surface of the cookware with dish detergent (ideally Dawn) while it's still cold. Later when you're done cooking and the item has cooled down, the layer of soot will come off much easier.

My folks old farmhouse was built in the 1700s. It had a massive chimney that the house was built around and most of the rooms had a fireplace in them. The room that was originally used as the kitchen had a full cooking fireplace including a small beehive oven.

The chimney was so big that in the basement there was a a walkway built through the middle of it so you could get to the other side. We didn't do it all the time but holidays like Christmas we built a fire in every fireplace and boy howdy did it heat the house.

77 When I first got married there was a massive ice storm that knocked out power across the state. We went to my in laws to help them, because mother in law was bed ridden and father in law was useless. Mother in law needed a special bed that required constant power, but was dead from the power outage. Looking out the back window I noticed that the doorbell was lit up on the neighbor next door. They were on a different grid. I went over to the neighbor and knocked but no one was home. There was an outlet on the porch. I went back to the inlaw’s house and collected all of their extension cords and strung a line from the porch to the house. Voila, power for the fridge and the bed. We used the fire place to heat the house and cook dinner. When the neighbor came home he was cool with us snagging power.

The Egyptians did not have maple syrup, which is why dynastic Egypt died out. Constantly eating French toast without the micronutrients found in maple syrup fatally weakened their DNA.

95 Probably already talked about, but cavemen cooked over the same fire that warmed their living space. Cave, mud hut, stick shelter, whatever. Our only advancement has been wrapping corn or potatoes in foil before sticking them in the coals. At some point we learned to wash the dirt and soot off our bodies. This is how we learned we were different colors. Read that in Cave Of The Clan Bears.

102 Something I need to think about is having the chimney (it's a metal pipe actually) removed and the roof fixed... it leaks when it rains really hard and if the wind blows from a certain direction. 104 And apropos of nothing...has anyone in the Horde ever used his fireplace to cook something?

Many moons ago, we had a nice cabin in the Kisatchie National Forest. My maternal grandfather provided a wood stove similar to this one (link goes to home depot) https://is.gd/wzJuog. Casting date was somewhere in the 40s if I remember correctly. Pa had me line the fire box with red clay maybe two inches thick, and then he built a fire on the outside of the damned thing to bake in the clay. Cooled it off, then brought it inside.

Gran and Mom made stews and soups on that danned thing as long as I can remember. In the winter, it would always have a cast iron kettle steaming away to humidity the cabin.

We weren't without a gas stove in the kitchen, Gran preferred the way the wood stove made soups and stews. Mom just pussed out and didn't fight her. Gran & Pa were depression era pre-teens. He dropped out of school when he was 7 to be the primary provider for his family. Hard headed Southern Baptists, with some serious opinions and survival skills.

108 I have a small coal-fired space heater sitting in the shop at home that I might bring down here to AZ. You can buy anthracite coal in 40-pound bags from Tractor Supply. I could set it up in the corner of my front room, and fit a fan into an existing opening of the bedroom wall to blow warm air into the bedroom. The heater is made of brown enameled steel, and stands about 40 inches high. The chimney could be a stovepipe through an outside wall, with an elbow to carry the stack a couple of feet above the roof eave.

When the power goes out, as it does 2,3,4x a year, mostly in the fall or winter, it is warming and comforting. I use my camping stove to cook on.

At our family cabin on Vashon, my grandpa had a cast iron insert that really pumped out the heat. And you could cook on it. He'd scavenge logs that broke free from the timber mill booms and be warm all winter.

157 Slow thread, so here's a little something to excite controversy. Are OnlyTrumpers even worse than NeverTrumpers?

Here's the money quote: I did, however, enthusiastically vote for Trump in 2020—and I’ll vote enthusiastically for whomever the Republican nominee is. Loyalty is an admirable quality, but loyalty to our nation should trump loyalty to a political figure. I’d be thrilled if Trump wins in 2024. If Ron DeSantis runs and wins the GOP primary, I’d be thrilled to see DeSantis take the oath of office as well.

Look at the damage Joe Biden has done in just over two years. If you’re willing to subject our nation to a full eight years of that just to make a point, you’re doing the work of the Democrats.

These are points I've been making for awhile.

179 My mother's house has a parilla (Argentine wood grill) built into one of her fireplaces. (ONE of. I have no fireplace and I must scream!) It cooks up a steak, even a thick porterhouse, in about 3 minutes. But it takes an hour to get the coals right. I have done it, though! And it was delicious.
Posted by: Sabrina Chase at February 19, 2023 03:04 PM (M4gnG)

I was looking at a parilla, but also at a Brazilian estufa de lenha which usually also has an oven attached, and researching it I discovered there are about five major styles of wood burning stoves and grills in South America. They including the Andean one where the pots hand down inside the firebox and it tends to be made of adobe bricks, the Colombian one that looks like a cast iron range made out of brick, and the Mexican Estufa Patsari, which uses a metal or clay comal inset on top to fry things.

A co worker (the one who had a problem with garden gnomes) grew up in Northern Mexico with the patsari style stoves and thought the other stoves had huge fireboxes, and I had to explain that most of South America had real trees.

I can't offer studies / data to support this, but I believe that if you let the moldy wood burn for a while before placing the meat over it, there should be no issue. Frankly, I suspect the risk is next to nothing, provided everything gets hot enough. Burning mold wouldn't really worry me at all, but mold spores can pose some risks.

232 I use the inverted stack method when building a fire. Two large logs on the bottom, with a decent gap between them. Medium sized kindling stacked in between them, with small kindling on top.

The kindling burns fairly quickly, falls and creates a bed of hot coals in the center, which gets the large logs going in short order. Works very, very well in an indoor setting.

241 This a FWP?

The "new" part of our house is maybe eighty years. The old part of the house is a hundred-plus.

The old part's original kitchen sink had a nice-looking faucet, vertical mount, chrome, hot & cold handles, but the valves were getting worn and the cross-part had a leak from when it was allowed to freeze long ago. I got tired of changing the washers and trying to plug the leak. Found a nearly-identical retro faucet set online. Our plumber friend installed it. Only then did I realize that the new faucet had some kind of flow restrictors, apparently, because it takes over a minute to fill a gallon jug. I've looked at the doc to see if there's an obvious thing to remove (like the shower heads that say, oh, don't remove this thing or the flow won't be restricted wink wink). I'll see if our plumber can see something I didn't.

Looks nice, anyway. Doesn't leak. 😕

244 Since you don't really cook over burning wood, maybe in a pot or dutch oven. Usually you burn it down to coals and cook over that.

The problem with moldy wood is that it is wet and takes almost as much heat to boil off the moisture as it gives out when it is burning. Also. rotted wood is punky and it doesn't give out much heat, though it will preserve a coal overnight

Agreed, good point. My comment was made thinking the moldy timber would be burnt directly, not used as chips. But I didn't clarify.

258 nd apropos of nothing...has anyone in the Horde ever used his fireplace to cook something?

my family in Italy did up until they got gas stoves in the 1960s. Old habits die hard, and they continued this practice when they got established here and built themselves homes with fireplaces. (il focolare)

lately my uncle has been grilling lamb chops and steaks on the hearth and it's very tough maintaining a meatless diet. That fire-cooked steak is awakening my inner carnivore.

265 Among the numerous things I've grown to hate about Colorado is how friggin' quickly counties announce a no-campfire ban in the summer months. I think Boulder County might have a perma-ban.

It sucks planning a camping trip and having to make sure there are no bans. partly why I camp in Wyoming these days.

they're great for establishing a cozy mood and they look good in Christmas pictures, but as CBD mentioned, they're not much for heating a room. You have to be up close to them to feel the warmth.

But if you're going to use them to cook food, well that opens up another world of possibilities.

We were out of power for over a week and the folks had just put half a cow in the freezer. Sadly, the bbq was destroyed. But we had metal dishes that we used to cook in the fireplace. That was my first lesson in cooking meat. It was delicious.
Also where I discovered how great Heinz 57 sauce is.

Early in his career, Hubby was almost plowed over by a female employee speed-walking around a corridor "corner" on the wrong side ... Hubby saw her a split second beforehand and, as a defensive measure, was able to raise both arms up and stretch them out in front of himself, thereby making solid contact with the female's breasts unavoidable ... Hubby remained motionless for a second or two while stabilizing from the crash, during which time the female employee said, "You can move your hands now" ... So that's exactly what hubby did -- briefly, of course, before disengaging (and apologizing) ... Fortunately, the female employee realized the crash had been her fault, she had a sense of humor, allowing both of them to chuckle and move on.
