Top Story

  • Full details of Intel's new range of workstation CPUs are out. (AnandTech)

Prices start at $359 for a 6 core part, with 4 memory channels supporting up to 2TB of RAM, and 64 lanes of PCIe 5.0. Except you can't buy that one, it's OEM-only.

Price for a 16 core model is $1389 with 4 channel RAM and 64 PCIe lanes, or $1589 with 8 channel RAM and 112 PCIe lanes. That's not a big difference but the motherboards for the latter version are likely to cost more as well.

It's likely to be slower than AMD's Ryzen 7950X - clock speeds are lower by about 1GHz - but if you need lots of RAM and/or PCIe slots it could be a viable option.

Benchmarks coming at the end of the month I think.

The chipset only comes with 2.5Gb Ethernet, which I think is a misfire. Workstation class systems like this should have 10GbE as standard.

If one of my Hyundai's key FOBs is left in the car, it will sound an alarm when I leave the car and it will not let you lock the car from the outside without being in possession of another FOB and even then you must press the manual button on the outside door handle to lock. It's not enough to press the FOB's door lock button.

Most car manufacturers are moving all of their cars to push to start, they've been doing that for a while now.

My 2015 Honda Fit had PTS, my 2020 Pilot has PTS, my 2015 Jeep Wrangler does not have PTS.

I would say grudgingly that the three best bits of tech you can get in autos today is PTS, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control.

Well, it's been around for 4.5 billion years, that's a long time, I'm sure it's gone through a lot of growing pains during that time, it's roughly middle age right now so let hope it doesn't start going through a midlife crisis like divorcing it's wife and getting a fast car and seeing other women.

The teacher said, "and now, class, you understand the meaning of "taxation without representation." And indeed we did!

176 So you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but you can make a silk suture out of a horse's tail.

Animals are weird.

Trump. The constant refrain.

185 The comment links are broken. If I use the "Comments" link from the main page I get

https://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=403205

If I click the post like ("04:00 AM") I get here

https://ace.mu.nu/archives/403205.php

and the Comments link there is

http://minx.cc/?post=403205

which doesn't work.

186 Now, I've seen two different stories on the hardware requied for ChatGPT ..
1) 10,000 Nvidia high-end GPUs
2) 25,000 Nvidia high end GPUs for $25,000,000

Also, they estimates that Google would need something like 1,100,000 GPUs or $100 billion to keep up with the demand of ChatGTP usage in their search engines.

This is one hell of a large gamble. Makes Microsoft's $10 billion to OpenAI look cheap.

187 >What's wrong with Google

There's a deeper cause. Humans are highly evolved tribal primates; a couple thousand years of living in cities is not enough generations to override 250,000 years of roaming the steppes in small hunter-gatherer bands.

The number of people whose names, faces and personal details you can remember is about a hundred. That's also how big a neolithic tribe will get before instinctively splitting into smaller bands that drift apart.

Any company larger than about a hundred people, its employees will stop thinking of themselves as part of "the company" and start thinking of themselves as part of the hundred or so people they work with regularly - their department, their regional office, whatever. Their "tribe" is no longer the company competing with other companies; it's their department competing with other departments for budget, headcount, prestige, etc.

That's what's going at Google.

188 So what the hell SHOULD I be using for a search engine?
