Disney Marvel's Ant-Man is Antifa-Man?
And Is Disney Marvel Releasing Another Box-Office Turd?

Before that, an update on the Norman Peltz proxy fight to join Disney's board: He's ended that effort. I think that was why, when I posted on this last week, the website promoting the proxy fight was down.

He gave up the proxy fight because Bob Iger surrendered and agreed to all of his demands. Laying off 7,000 employees, cutting three billion (with a B) from Disney's budget for producing content, restoring the dividend Disney used to pay out to shareholders... Peltz wanted Disney to stop spending like a drunken sailor and start paying out dividends again, instead of hoarding its cash to buy more studios, and Iger gave him that.

So Peltz dropped his demand to join the board.

I would have strongly preferred if Peltz had continued to fight -- Iger cannot be trusted and is a Woke lunatic -- but, whatever.

Speaking of Iger being a Woke Lunatic: Apparently Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is loaded with pro-antifa and pro-socialist messaging.

Right-leaning observers on YouTube such as Midnight's Edge and Overlord DVD and Chris Gore are starting to smell another box office disappointment. Quantumania earlier was projected to bring in $280 million worldwide in its five-day opening weekend. That includes the typical Thursday night release for blockbusters, plus Monday for Presidents Day.

Wait, there's a holiday this Monday? So long, suckers!

Those projections have now been lowered to $255 million.

Disney Marvel keeps seeing these projections go down further and further as the release date approaches.

Box office projections for Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have been lowered heading into its opening weekend. Domestically, the superhero threequel is expected to make between $95 million and $100 million in its first three days, according to Variety, with the number increasing to $110 million across the four-day extended President's Day weekend. A couple of weeks ago, the film was tracking for a $120 million debut.

Nevertheless, Ant-Man 3 is pacing ahead of both its predecessors, although it's falling well short of the super-sized box office hauls some of the more illustrious Marvel Cinematic Universe projects tend to deliver. By comparison, the first Ant-Man film made a solid (if not spectacular) $57 million in its domestic opening weekend back in 2015. Its 2018 sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, delivered a $76 million debut. For further context, the most recent MCU releases have all comfortably cleared three-digits in their opening weekends -- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivered a $185 million debut, Thor: Love and Thunder made $144 million, while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did $181 million.

Ant-Man 3 also happens to be only the second MCU film since 2019's Avengers: Endgame to score a China release. Of course, China's contribution to overall numbers has greatly shrunk post-pandemic -- the Middle Kingdom barely allows imports at all anymore -- but a projected opening between $35 million and $55 million will play a key role in the film clearing the $160 million overseas estimates that it is currently aiming for. This number could eventually fall anywhere between $130 million and $190 million. All in all, Ant-Man 3 is currently estimated to deliver a $255 million global opening.

Critics used to pan science-fiction and especially superhero movies -- that is, until Disney went full woke and started injecting Current Year Identity Politics into Star Wars and Marvel movies. Then they began loving Disney Star Wars and Disney Marvel.

But even the Woke Critics are sour on this movie: It manages only a 50% "fresh" rating, meaning it's officially rotten.

You might wonder if woke critics are down it because it's not woke enough. According to Chris Gore and the guys from Midnight's Edge, no, it's woke. Not as obnoxiously, in-your-face woke as some of Marvel's recent turds, but still woke.

First of all, Ant-Man is once again not the star of his own movie. Ant-Man became the comedic sidekick to a Stronk Empowered Wasp in the last film, and in this one, he's second fiddle to the real star, who is also a Stronk Empowered Woman. Critics seems split, though, on which Stronk Empowered Woman is the real star -- Janet Van Dyne (the original Wasp, played by Michelle Pfeiffer) or Ant-Man's teenaged daughter.

But they do agree: He's a co-star in his own movie once again.

But the real wokeness, they say, is in the movie's pro-antifa and pro-socialist messaging.

Among the bits of woke messaging:

Ant-Man's daughter Cassie is part of a protest group with similarities to antifa. Reportedly, it's a "homelessness rights" protest group, but it's said that the group was "peacefully protesting" before being dispersed and menaced by cops.

In the Quantum Realm itself, there are lots of human beings, for some reason. And they have formed a "resistance" against the rulership of Black Trump, I mean Kang the Conqueror, and are heard to yell "Burn it all down."

Finally, Hank Pym, who'd you'd guess is more conservative and also more capitalistic, observes the cooperation of ants, all taking orders from their unquestioned queen and acting as the organic robots in a hive-mind, and says something like, "No one wants to say it, but socialism works!"

See, the ants who are all just cogs in a great Social Machine directed by an elite are proof that socialism works.

Gee, I wonder why China permitted this movie of all movies to play there...?

The reactions I've heard from different right-leaning reviewers are, basically, this is better than Phase 4 Marvel movies except for the only good one, Spider-Man: No Way Home. And they point out, being better than The Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder is not a high bar to cross.

The other complaints are: Marvel has once again turned a possibly-interesting movie into rubbish by sticking all of their "stupid jokes" into inappropriate places, because no Marvel movie can go three minutes without a, as Andrej from Midnight's Edge says in his Norwegian accent, "another asshole joke." He means a joke written by an asshole, not about an actual asshole.

The Quantum Realm is a computer-rendered non-place entirely unlike earth, which makes it hard to "connect" with it at all, or feel that it's a real place that "you can touch," as Chris Gore's partner Alan said.

Also, a lot of people seem to agree that this is yet another Marvel CGI shitshow, with 95% of the movie taking place in this completely CGI generated world. And some reviewers (not even those on the left) say that Marvel's abusive treatment of CGI artists has resulted in a movie with, yet again, some distractingly bad CGI.

If you liked Michael Pena's role as the logarrhea-afflicted ex-con Luis, too bad, because he can't shrink and so doesn't appear in the movie at all. None of the X-Cons appear. I think Chris Gore suggested that Pena could have at least been hired to provide the opening narration which catches people up on what Ant-Man's been doing since Endgame, and that's a fantastic idea because no one tells a story like Luis, but no, that narration is voiced by Paul Rudd.

They also say that the villain Modok is wasted and is a pretty minor mook and a joke of one, and that even Kang, who is supposed to be the Thanos of Phase 5 and 6, comes off as unthreatening.

I don't want to spoil a superhero movie, but Kang is temporarily defeated in this movie. Which means the Thanos-level threat of the next two phases begins his career... with a loss, to little comedic-sidekick barely-a-superhero Ant-Man.

That kind of makes Kang the Conqueror seem like he's not so threatening at all.

More like Kang the Conquered amirite?

The prediction I've heard for box office is the typical solid-but-not-quite-up-to-expectations opening that all Marvel movies (except Spider-Man, which is a Sony co-production) are experiencing lately, with a big drop-off in ticket sales as word of mouth gets out.

I really liked the first Ant-Man and while the second was an absolute null storywise -- it was just Ant-Man and his allies trading possession of a piece of rolling luggage with some human punching bags for two hours -- it did have the wildest shrinking/growing set-pieces. It's a real shame that almost all of these nifty shrinking/growing gags were totally given away and spoiled in the trailers.

This one seems like another miss, and partly made worse by eleventh hour reshoots, which the Midnight's Edge guys seem to think were 1, ordered by the returning Bob Iger, and 2, ordered to fill the movie up with more "asshole jokes" because, again, Marvel doesn't even pretend to make real movies any more, they're just woke sitcoms in between CGI punch-ups that carry no weight because everyone now knows that nothing means anything in the Marvel Universe.

Did Bog Iger also demand the inclusion of praise for the Chinese system of authoritarian socialism just to get the movie screened there? I don't know, but it feels like a Bob Iger thing to do.

It's rumored that Bob Iger called Kevin Feige into his office to tell that he has to mix some actual entertainment in with the woke messaging. Now, the praise for the authoritarian socialism of ants -- "socialism works!" -- is of course woke messaging, but if it was added to get the movie screened in China, that would suggest Bob Iger has realized that woke messaging is bad for business, making the China opening all the more critical.

I hope it fails.

Meanwhile:

A recent South Park made it official: Wokeness is killing Hollywood.

The set-up is that kids in the school hear that the Jews control Hollywood. This leads them to believing something even more incredible: That the specific Jew who controls Hollywood is the fourth-grade student Kyle Bronflowsky.

Randy Marsh also comes to believe that the fourth-grader Kyle Bronflowsky runs Hollywood -- I guess he heard it from the other fourth-graders -- and so goes to Kyle's dad to tell him to get Kyle to stop with all the woke crap already.

"You know wokeness ruined the MCU, don't you?" he says.

When South Park says it, that means that everyone is now thinking the same thing.

If Cartman had said that, people could say, "Well Cartman is a racist junior member of QAnon, that doesn't mean the writers think it's true."

But Cartman isn't saying this. Stan's dad is saying this. And while Stan's dad is an idiot like most of the characters on South Park, he's not Right-Wing Racist or anything.

Kyle, please tell Bog Iger and Kevin Feige to stop ruining Marvel.

16 Disney has also announced that they're slowing down on releasing MCU stuff.

They had 5 shows planned for 2023. Only 2 are guaranteed to actually premiere in 2023 now.

They soaked the market with shit over the past two years, and it's really put a dent into the whole enthusiasm on the part of the masses.

But, still, Thor 4 made over $700 million and Black Panther 2 made about $800 million. That's not chump change, just not Phase 3 money and puts the movies in places where it's questionable whether they're in the black or the red. Also, everything on Disney+ is a money suck.

I saw the first trailer and immediately checked out because I could see the same "future craziness" they brought to Doctor Strange 2, which is to say, "slightly futuristic Earth."

Feige should be thinking Science that he has James Gunn doing Guardians of the Galaxy 3, because I have a feeling it's going to be the only bright spot in the whole thing.

Also, I doubt it'll be that good. Gunn has shown himself to be so completely undisciplined narratively that it's going to be an overlong mess. It'll just be an overlong mess that more people will actually like.

Also, I doubt it'll be that good. Gunn has shown himself to be so completely undisciplined narratively that it's going to be an overlong mess. It'll just be an overlong mess that more people will actually like.

Hollywood chooses to learn what lessons it wants to learn.

When Inception came out and was surprisingly successful financially, Hollywood chose to learn nothing. "It's just the Christopher Nolan effect. We can't replicate that." There's an article about it in Insider, I think, that includes interviews with producers where they just come to that conclusion.

They could have come to, "People want smart, intricately designed high concept films." They could have come to, "We need strong, auteur filmmakers who will use our money wisely and well." Instead they came to, "It was a fluke we have no ability to replicate."

With Top Gun, it's the same thing. The lessons are there. Hollywood chooses to ignore them.

But yeah, we're just not at the "broke" part of the equation. What's sinking Disney is mostly Disney+, not the MCU's miscalculations. Remember, Trump got the same percentage of black votes nation wide - except for the four cities that swung the election to Biden: Atlanta, Philly, Detroit, and Milwaukee, where Trump got almost no black votes. Had Trump gotten that same percentage of black votes in those cities that he did in the rest of the country, he would have won the election. That strongly argues vote count fraud.

But you see, the GENIUS of the MCU universe is that nothing is set in stone because of time travel.

140 I watched the first five minutes of Thor 4. It was terrible. The prologue with the bizarre god was laughably stupid, and you need it to seem real because this is the villain's origin story and motivation. But you can't believe it; it's played for laughs. And there are no laughs. It's just played for them.

Then came the hideous part with the Guardians, which was nothing but slapslick Bugs Bunny level jokes in what is supposed to be a big combat. If fighting and combat aren't taken seriously with real stakes, what is the point of including this expensive-to-CGI crap in the movie at all?

After that absurd CGI shitshow, they cut to Jane Porter in a cat scan imager, and than tonal shift from bugs bunny CGI to cancer was just so incompetent and unprofessional I turned it off.

That's as far as I got.

True, and these guys do actual damage. That said, a very good outcome on net - though it takes time - is for these guys to drive their institutions into the ground so that someone else can come in and clear up the wreckage. It would probably have been better if Iger *didn't* capitulate and was instead ousted so an outsider could stalk through the halls with a scythe, smash existing projects with a sledgehammer and try like hell to start over before the money runs out. In so doing, they will have to stop doing what the last guys did, and might possibly stop doing active damage to the culture.

214 so what they're going to do in the Avengers movie is do the "incursion" storyline where universes are colliding and destroying each other.

There will also be a "Battleworld"/Secret Wars movie with lots of alternate versions of characters from other universes.

Spoiler: A universe with an alternate Tony Stark and Captain America will be destroyed, but they themselves will live, and will join the main Marvel Universe as Iron Man and Captain America. They'll be played by younger, cheaper actors.

This won't save things, though. It's the Wokeness that is killing Marvel (and the incompetence, and the samey-sameyness). Just introducing a new woke Iron Man and new woke Captain America doesn't fix things.

I do not consider a 3/5 rating to be positive. I consider it to be middling and leaning more towards negative, but RT reviewers (they assign the positive or negative) split on whether they are positive or negative.

On Disney movies (well, Disney movies that Disney is trying to push which is most of them except Dumbo which is hilariously anti-Disney in content), those on the cusp reviews tend to all count as positive.

He eventually accepts himself and his mistakes and move forward with his life perhaps sadder but wiser

Yeah, the Eternal Champion is a very interesting literary concept that Moorcock pulls off quite well. Most of his stories involve various incarnations of the same entity that can cross through time and space, but seldom interact with each other except at critical nexus points. Pretty wild stuff.

Roger Zelazny also excelled at multiversal stories with his Amber universe. There you have a bipolar universe (or maybe multipolar) and between them are "shadow worlds" that take on the characteristics of the polar realm as you get closer to them.

For some perspective, "This is Us" - NBC's top rated show - costs about a million bucks per episode.

Conceptually, Amber is a really neat idea. I agree that the execution is flawed. Personally, I loved Zelazny's Changeling/Madwand duology much more. That series is great! And involves a multiverse as well.

In case no one has mentioned it, homelessness in the MCU is a result of Thanos' snapping away half the people in the universe for 5 years. Folks moved into their homes, but they got them back when in Endgame.

So the big social justice issue is the squatters not being allowed back into the homes of people who were snapped.

Also, Kang was already defeated once in the Loki series.

The special effects are definitely dated, but the quality of the writing on the show is good enough you don't care.

Red Dwarf had some of the cheapest sets ever and the show was just brilliant.

It's NOT spectacle that makes good entertainment, despite what Disney Execs may think. It's STORYTELLING, first, last and always.

Keep that in mind and you can entrance your audience if all you have for a background is a painted curtain.

One of the dumbest of Marvel's creations in recent memory. If I recall correctly, she basically stole some of his tech, used it, and then Tony, out of the goodness of his heart, because of course he'd just turn all this over to a teenager, decided to let her keep it. You know, the same guy who took the suit away from Peter Parker because he felt he was far too reckless and would get people hurt.

See, according to woke Marvel, being a teenager with a high IQ means you automatically know all the science behind everything Tony does. Because that's how IQ works. According to stupid people.

Thanks to streaming, I've seen a few movies with Jared Leto in them.

Jared Leto's got this weird anti-charisma. You just kinda hate him the minute he shows up on the screen.

Not sure why Hollywood likes him but if they're determined to let him into movies, they should stick with him as the odious scumbag or villain 0or weasel. Stuff like that. He could have a long and profitable Peter Lorre-ish career.

Anything else...nope.

358 Throughout the pandemic sra blaster and I watched a lot of stuff on the streaming services. There is a LOT of real crap out there. Stuff that makes you realize that the crappiest big budget Hollywood stuff is way better.

But occasionally we see stuff with good bones - you can see a good story, or pieces of good writing, or, heck orginality! - and think man if that was redone with budget it could be something.

But what movie was that where these guys had a great movie where some chick dies in the gas chamber and they don't want Hollywood to take over and have Bruce Willis smash through the glass and save her in the end, and then they get the greenlight and make the movie and Bruce Willis smashes through the glass to save the girl and theyare totally stoked about it?

But I'm done and don't care anymore. Disney is killing all these franchises, and then beating the corpses, hoping that gold coins pop out a la Mario World bricks.

So, any given day, you could have about 3 screaming headlines about it.

When revenues go down, so does maintenance of roads and equipment.

Um, he did. Corwin's Chronicles are books 1-5, and Merlin's Chronicles are books 6-10.

Merlin's Chronicles aren't as good because he was dying of colon cancer while trying to finish the books, which is why the tenth book is three times the size of the rest.

462 "Socialism WORKS"

Yes, if the "subjects" are ants, it works beautifully. The issue is that we are humans, and we have that whole pesky self-determination and sentience issue to deal with.

Humans generally aren't willing to sacrifice themselves en masse for the good of the "whole". Especially when that "whole" will inevitably be a powerful elite with way too much control over us ants... er, peons... uhh, I mean, CITIZENS.

That's actually the problem with our current cronyist instantiation of "capitalism" that we're effing around with right now. The power elite are all that matters.
