Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | In 23 Baltimore City Schools, Exactly Zero Students Are Able to Do Math at Grade LevelI'm sure this is just more "white supremacy" on display, given that the government of Baltimore is black-led and has been for decades. Twitter gave the Baltimore public school system a failing grade after the city reported that zero students in 23 different schools across the city are proficient in math. Ninety-three percent of third through eighth graders also tested below grade level in math.If those stats are confusing: In 23 schools, which are not all of Baltimore's schools, there are zero students at grade level in math. In all of Baltimore's schools, only 7% are at grade level. People are saying this is the last straw for forced education in government schools in Baltimore: Parents and children must be permitted to escape these failure factories. Professors and political commentators expressed shock at the news and called for more freedom to allow parents to find better schools for their children. George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley argued on Twitter that teachers are treating students less like human beings and more like captive listeners. "Teachers and boards are killing the institution of public education by treating children and parents more like captives than consumers. That cannot continue much longer before parents look for alternatives."The shutdown of the schools worsened student performance -- but they were already failing abysmally. The percentage of students proficient in Algebra I dropped to a dismal 14 percent, below pre-pandemic levels of 27 percent in 2019, according to the Maryland State Department of Education. This isn't the first year that Baltimore schools have failed students. In 2021, 41 percent of Baltimore public high school students earned below a 1.0 GPA, according to Fox Baltimore.Maybe this is a wake-up call. Baltimore residents are complaining of the "fraud and corruption" in the school system, and the government. Days after Gov. Wes Moore, D-Md., declared education a top priority for his tenure, Baltimore reported that zero students in 23 different public schools are proficient in math. Also, 93% of third through eighth graders tested below grade level in the same subject. Baltimore residents responded by blasting school officials and lawmakers for "fraud and corruption" which they claim is to blame for the low numbers. "I lay the blame in two places," U.S. Army veteran and Baltimore resident Evie Harris said on "Fox & Friends First" Friday. "I would start with the board of schools commissioners or the Board of School Administrators. And I'm going to also add in some parents... We've been having these results for decades. I am not shocked because we've been having these results. I am angry, and I would lay the blame majorly at [CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools] Sonja Santelises and the Baltimore City School administrators who are absolutely dismissive and arrogant at the results we are seeing here in Baltimore." First vice chair of the Baltimore County Republican Central Committee Kyna "K.J." McKenzie also weighed in on the report. " I'm shocked. I am frustrated and angry about it. As a parent, I'm a parent. I live in Baltimore City and we've been dealing with this for decades," she said. "And these results are very frustrating." "Frustrating because we're not able to get to the root cause of what's happening, because everyone the leadership here blames it on racism. We've had Democratic leadership for decades. The people here in power look like me and everything's blamed on racism."None of this is new. A year ago, a local news station found that most of Baltimore's high schoolers read and performed math at a grade school level. So when they say that 93% of students aren't performing at grade level, they don't mean that 11th graders are performing at a 10th grade level. In some cases, they point out, students are performing ten grades below their actual grade. They had results leaked to them of a test given to assess student's levels in math and reading. In a class of 11 high school juniors, only 9 even completed the reading test. Of those nine, just two were rated as performing at a high school level. (Not necessarily 11th grade, note!). One performed at a 7th grade level. Six performed at an elementary school level. On the math test, only seven completed the test. Again, two performed at high school level, the other five performed at elementary school level. One performed math at a first grade level. The mayor skipped out on event he was scheduled to appear at, in order to avoid questions on the topic.

The sad thing is that reading and mathematics are something that ANYONE of average intelligence can master, given proper instruction. I know a lot of folks rail against math, claiming it's "hard." No, it's *different* than your normal experience, so you just need to put yourself into a math-mindset to understand it, rather than a language-mindset.
Anyone without learning disabilities (and plenty of folks who have them) can learn this material. I've read numerous accounts of adult learners who finally mastered the ability to read and they broke down in tears because of all the years they missed without that skill. They immediately became much more employable and much more productive workers. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at February 14, 2023 04:57 PM (BpYfr) 53

Maybe some of our Maryland Morons remember this. Some years ago Maryland used to give a standardized test of some sort to 8th graders at the end of the year to assess their knowledge. This test was just for informational purposes, had no bearing on their grades, and the kids knew it. So no one ever took it seriously and the test scores showed that.
Took them a while, but they finally decided to give it to them earlier and make graduation from middle school contingent on passing the test. Test scores rose overnight. I wonder if they still even bother. Posted by: bluebell at February 14, 2023 04:59 PM (pTb/Z) 74

This is more than the schools. It is parents, too. Children are collateral damage to single parent households who themselves are strung out, etc etc. I know I home school, so I obviously am heavily involved. But I didn’t homeschool my oldest. I sat with them and did homework nightly. I checked their work. I knew what they were doing. But how can kids do this when they don’t even have pencils in their houses? We have to talk about culture and it’s ugly truth at some point. Or this will just keep happening.

Quick hits.
There was a similar story from B'more last year or year before, but this was English/reading proficiency and high school grads (something like that). You'll never believe what the numbers show! Ditto to everyone above pointing out the only 2 relevant facts: parents failing is always the biggest factor in educational failure, and one way or another, this degradation is exactly what generations of voters have voted for. And missed the last thread, but leaving aside the inexcusable conflation of illegal and legal migration, the survey numbers are pretty dire, actually. But the disconnect between public views on borders/illegal migration and voting behavior is as big a gap as exists in the electorate. Posted by: rhomboid at February 14, 2023 05:09 PM (OTzUX) 163

If teachers actually had power to give and enforce detention for kids who start fights, these schools would see an immediate improvement. If school administrators had the balls to put kids performing at a grade level X into classrooms teaching at grade level X, these schools would see an immediate improvement. Right now, the kids three or four grades below their age are in remedial classes. Kids one or two grades below their age are in regular class. Kids performing at their age level or above are in advanced class. That's bullshit. If a 7th grade age kid is performing at a third grade level, park their ass in third grade. 172 I used to work in Baltimore, Curtis Bay to be exact. I try to give back to the communities I work in, I feel this to my core as a Christian. I worked with the elementary school to identify 10 of the neediest families. We delivered Christmas presents and 2 weeks of food. These people had nothing. Furniture was whatever scrounged from an eviction of someone else. It was dirty, houses were dirty. Kids were dirty. Except one house always stood out - an intact Mexican family. Poor as dirt, but that house was clean. Those kids were clean. And the father cried when we gave the gifts to their kids. They were the one family I knew was not going to sell all the stuff we just brought in 5 minutes to buy more meth. Because they were a family. Legal? I don’t know. Probably don’t want to know because that would bother my conscious in another way.

Special ed sucks up a lot of money.
Part of the death spiral for society is Doctors diagnosing everyone with ADHD, etc. for profit (the medical-pharmacological industrial complex) and then the schools demanding extra personnel and money to deal with special ed (the education industrial complex.) The cities don't care, since it feeds into the criminal justice industrial complex, or at the very least the social welfare industrial complex. These families are nothing more than crops farmed for profit by gov. and sanctioned industries. So they can't be productive - they just import more from South America. It is disgusting. This is why there was such outcry over No Child Left Behind.
The main thrust of it was testing and reporting. Bush (what's her name who was Secretary?) wanted reporting. Teachers did not. At the time (not in country so don't know now.) many states had a system where they would report each school as having something they were number one at. It was all smoke and mirrors to hide the bad ones. Made parents happy since they all thought their schools were above average, but they weren't. Bush wanted uniform testing across each state, and uniform reporting. Teachers did not want that, teachers won. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at February 14, 2023 05:33 PM (eYjq8) 306

I still recall a little filler AP story from the 1980s.
Some geniuses had funded a grant to some academic to study the phenomenon of recent immigrant family Vietnamese-American academic success, which was obvious and spectacular. The real genius was the grantee, whose conclusions required little actual work, though they probably went through the motions. Explanation: parents/home environment with high expectations, discipline, and support. Such support did not include helping with homework, since most parents in the study DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH. Anyone even slightly familiar with wildly successful immigrant communities over the decades coulda save the public the grant money and explained it up front. For last guvamint gig had a medical exam before luxurious travel, doc was a young Vietnamese-American woman (yes, fairly hawt). First joking comment to her: "so you must be the black sheep in the family, just a doctor!". "Oh yes (laughing) - my brother went to Yale Law, he's the star." (this involved the focus on sons vs. daughters a bit, too, which was typical in such families) Posted by: rhomboid at February 14, 2023 05:34 PM (OTzUX) 309

I agree. And let's be honest, if you have your kids going to a private school, do you want D'Shaundra and Chuy coming to your kid's school all tatted up and 2 years older from behind held back, as disruptive and troublemaking as they were in the public school? I can kind of understand the concern.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 14, 2023 05:37 PM (0hOvj) --- If they were smart (and they are not), they'd do a phased rollout, starting at the youngest grades and allowing parents to have vouchers for THEM to go the preferred schools. Sure it sucks for the older kids who don't have that option, but if behavior is a concern, then this is the ONLY way to ensure that the students who go to the vouchered schools get the proper discipline they need to function at their new school. If they start early, then they can easily be molded into proper citizens. Kind of the reverse of what the Leftists have done, actually. Baltimore may be near the bottom, but there are a lot of other school systems that are pretty bad.
As a country, we can't hold on to our technology, manufacturing, or anything similar, because the public schools are turning out either uneducated feral human beings, or confused adolescents who are filled with self - loathing...or kids that are becoming adults and want to drop out of the "system" because they already know it's rigged against THEM, in particular. But just as blood-boiling was something even more years back. An old childhood friend/neighbor I'd reconnected with is married to a very nice women, whose oldest daughter is a public school teacher. Just in the course of one informal sort of long lunch thing where the daughter was present, she managed to display what an idiotic, ignorant freak she is. Mentioned something about how she was offended having to teach about the US being the good guys in ..... WWII. Cannot believe she's an outlier. Really no longer deal with that guy, since he (but more his wife and step-kids) are even more politically clueless than many around here, and can't shut up about it. Yeah compare them to the peasant of the middle ages. Knew how to farm, catch fish, forage some, fix things, raise chickens.
I have said this for a while now but if we have a genuine collapse, an actual real catastrophe that destroys civilization the bulk of the population is going to die out of sheer ignorance. The lack of understanding of how anything at all works and how to function in life without big government and big business holding your hand. No, food does not come from the grocery store. No power does not come from the socket in the wall. No, water does not come from the tap. No, heat does not come from the vents. Someone has to make that all happen so that you can pay for the end result. If nobody is making that happen THEN YOU HAVE TO. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 14, 2023 05:56 PM (0hOvj) 412
I hope your hunt goes well.
Honestly I write so little by hand these days I probably would cramp up in ten lines if I tried to. I used to write hundreds of pages by hand and had this amazing architect's handwriting. These days it looks like I have palsy and am a retarded chimpanzee. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 14, 2023 05:57 PM (0hOvj) 413
We're creating the next generation who can barely count to 10, and they're going to solve a $32 trillion debt?

ED schools: lowest SAT scores, highest GPAs.
Mediocrities teaching mediocrities. A Doctorate in Education is basically a Participation Trophy (proof: "Dr Jill" - read her "dissertation". It sounds like 6th grade book report). Teachers are afraid of anything approaching a meritocracy, because they'd be on the bottom. We've been conned into treating teachers as if they were intellectuals. They're not; they've gone through 13th,14th 15th and 16th grades, with "social promotion". Their PR machine, a major component of Teacher's unions, promotes their idealization. Yeah, they're much smarter than ( most of :-) ) the 8 year old in 3rd grade, but in high school, most are only one or two lesson plans ahead of the students. Individually, they're not bad people, the ones in my extended family are actually good, but on average, thats what they are: average, or even slightly worse. We have to remove their control over the education of our young. Posted by: buddhaha at February 14, 2023 07:47 PM (k8kXr) 417

Dioramas are the kind of "extra credit" shit that got most teachers through school with something better than a 2.0. Posted by: buddhaha at February 14, 2023 08:07 PM (k8kXr) 418

"... I do some illustration work with quills because they have a much more expressive line than a ball point but its like juggling grenades, eventually you're gonna screw up and smear or spill on the paper." I hated Engineering Drawing Ii because we had to do some drawings on vellum using pen nibs and ink. Pause a bit too long with the compass... blot! Rock the nib too close to the straightedge, ink capillaries under and ... blot! Couldn't erase, so a new sheet of vellum, which I had to pay for. There were beerless weeks because my 2 beers worth of discretionary income went to drafting supplies.
