5 There's a new cat on the block tonight-- grey w/white stripe between its eyes. Cute lil thing, small, looks maybe 3 or 4 months old.

Good thing Cat is indoors right now, he'd pulverize this lil one. Little one looks clean and well-groomed. Probably not feral.

The smooth, shorthaired gray male who roams the complex was back yesterday morning as I finished my workout. I put some Friskies out in a plastic bowl for him. I've got to move fast so as to keep him from getting in and to keep Stirling and/or Dagny from getting out. I don't know if there'd be a fight, but the gray cat may not be altered, and I don't need Dagny getting knocked up. (They'd produce pretty kittens, but I can't handle that.)

Funny -- or maybe not, considering the town -- but the majority of my serious affairs/marriages have been with Cat'lick girls. Mrs. Wolfus No. 1, no, but most of the others.

Mrs. W No. 2 and I used to go out a lot in the early and mid-'80s. I heard about The Cold playing around town, but I'm not sure we ever went to see them. I guess not; I'm sure I'd remember.

That was sort of how I adopted the big black Wolf cat. His "people" used to let him out all the time. Then they got evicted and didn't take him along. Nor did they go to their neighbors and see if one would take him in; oh, no. They turned him loose to go from door to door for handouts. I'd met him some time back and found him more than likeable. So I took him in and he made friends with the incumbent cat Chekov in about an hour.

My buddy he was for more than 10 years.

46 Aw, Wolfus, that's sweet of you! And I loved reading about Chekov, except for when he was dying. Broke my heart.

"Cat" belonged to ppl what moved in next block over, and I didn't know because there were so many strays at the time. Our dog had died a few months before-- she had kept all of those cats at bay for years.

Cat was skittish, but became friendly after a while and I put food out the second year because he looked so awful. Then we had piles of snow last year and he was getting skinny. I think the other people didn't feed him, just had him as a mouser. I started letting him in the house a little, then captured and took him to vet...

We have about 2.5 worthwhile malls. The big one in the suburbs, still going strong since 1960 or so; the one where Sears used to be, now w/a Target, but the internal parts of the mall were damaged by a hurricane 18 months ago and the mall itself still hasn't reopened. And there's the only one on the west bank of the river, still a going concern, but visiting it you'd think you were in Kenya or Zimbabwe.

It will be Turing complete when the language model responds in the form of trigger words. The garbly-gook coming out of the mouths and keyboards of the Left often is untranslatable because Normals operate in a communication environment of structured syntax, definitions and grammar. Trigger language assembles emotionally connected sounds that take the NPC on an emotional journey to arrive to an action conclusion (click, rage, cry, hate, etc.). ChatGPC doesn't yet exist to purely manipulate and hurt like the Left.

We should be doomed then. When the offices closed during C19, I no longer had an office to go to. Since then all of my work is joyfully remote (like it was pre-marriage). The spouse has worked at home for 18. years. First year of remote was both of us in the same room, I on the east wall, she on the west wall. We are both recluses so we rarely go out.

In the new place, we have our separate work spaces (hers has a door) and live out in the sticks. Through divine intervention any prayer we haven't killed each other.

Great topic. I don't know but here are some guesses:

• broken families, step moms don't quite bond with his kids he occasionally sees.
• fashion sense is gone. Women would go to the anchors and browse forever, now they go out in public wearing pajamas
• Harbor freight replaced Sears hardware section, appliances are generic since all made offshore
• the impoverishing of America makes Walmart the new mall
• Amazon. Stores may have one or two varieties, on-line shopping has them all
• feral yutes, theft
• death of western/consumer culture, lack of community, the Shopping At The Mall tradition lost with changing demographics
• hard to find competent retail workers
• insurance, rent and other overhead too hard to compete with more optimized places
• traffic, inconvenience.

168 “The new climate change curriculum will examine the impact of climate change on health and health inequality,”

Given that we are on year 15 of The Pause, and even their predicted climate models indicate a year-to-year temperature change equivalent to the temperature difference between your nose and your toes, how does the Harvard Crimson therefore tally the health inequality of those who voluntarily leave climatically different zones (like central and south America, Africa and Asia) and stream into the US over the Southern Border (or over-extend their student visas)?

The junta could therefore be guilty of health inequality by shipping those from central America to enclaves closer to the Canadian border rather than back to their origins where they are more climatically suited and accustomed.

196 Another reason for the decline of malls is that there is nothing there exclusively, or even mainly, for men. There used to be bookstores, a drugstore with a magazine and paperback book section, gadget stores like Spencer's Gifts and Sharper Image, men's clothing stores where you could buy a suit or a leather windbreaker or a tweed jacket. A tobacco store like Tinder Box. A pet store. Often a real restaurant instead of a food trough, oops, I mean food court. A movie theatre. And the Victoria's Secret store had actual beautiful girls on the big posters outside.

My biggest mall once had a This End Up Furniture, where you could buy well-made wooden chairs, sofas, and chests (I have had one of the latter in my bedroom since 1986). They had a Glamour Shots place where you could take your girlfriend to be made up and photographed like Morgan Fairchild.

Going to the mall was an adventure for both sexes. Now? Everything is for women and children. Men are an afterthought.

205 I worked at Red Hat for 16 years and left last April because of the vaxx mandate. I worked at Secureworks until first of December but I didn't like the top management, so I left. Red Hat is at a full hiring freeze, no backfill, and Secureworks just laid off 10% of their workforce, including my old role.

My new place is actually hiring, though conservatively. I'm hoping I am doing something useful (I'm in marketing now so who knows).

My guess is they're using this crappy economy to shed a buttload of toxic, barely competent diversity hires (HR adn marketing - this is where they pad the staff with POC, women, and rainbows) and low performers in engineering.

It's been 15 years since the last true rounds of layoffs and cutbacks in tech, so this has been a long time coming but it's unsettling.

It doesn't take rocket science to be 'in the trades'. Just experience, on the job as an apprentice for a couple of years is best.

If persons of color don't want to be in the trades and aren't represented at job sites, there's a reason. But, I don't know what it is. I don't think racism has a damn thing to do with it.

Perhaps it was lack of a father figure in the household growing up. I saw what my father could do with a hammer and nails, wrenches, and other tools. If he could do it, I knew I could too.

Which is why I think, properly trained, it has a bright future as a code generator. A friend already uses it to write unit tests and it does it very well. For simple coding tasks, syntactically correct is within shouting distance of logically correct and there's a lot of onerous drudge coding that could benefit from this.

238 "ChatGPT is a language model, not an information model. It answers questions by matching words together."

Thank you! This really cannot be repeated enough in any conversation about "AI"*, though I do try. All of the big names right now are, or are descended from, language modeling. They learn what words usually go together and can thus put words together in a reasonably convincing way. That is a world apart from understanding the things those words mean and making connections on that level.

A person can struggle to say what they mean. These "AIs" cannot, because they don't mean anything. The biggest reason people find them convincing is because most people operate on the same level much of the time.

*Quotes indicating they don't really deserve that name yet.
