Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | NPR Pushes The Idea That There Are "Some Places" -- Leftwing Enclaves Controlled by Hysterical Obese Karens -- Where We Must "Mask Forever"There are still hundreds of thousands of COVID cases reported in the U.S. each week, along with a few thousand deaths related to COVID. But with mask mandates a thing of the past and the national emergency health declaration that will expire in May, we are in a new phase of the pandemic. Life looks a little more normal here in the U.S. than it did a few years ago, but decisions on how to deal with the virus aren't over yet. China had a huge increase in cases last month after abandoning its zero COVID policy, and another variant prompted renewed recommendations in some airports. Researchers estimate that more than 65 million people are struggling with the effects of COVID -- a disease we still have to learn about. Some experts that NPR was pretty sure would agree with their Mask Forever Protocol. Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, says he and his wife are still playing it conservatively. He cautions people to stay "careful, not carefree."He says that "older" people and the immunocompromised should still wear masks. Nowhere in this article, by the way, is there any acknowledgement that masks have repeatedly found to be ineffective against "stopping the spread." Dr. Bob Wachter, chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, plays it a little more by ear. "I have come to calibrate my mask wearing based on my best educated guess as to the possibility that someone has COVID and also how important is it for me to do the thing without a mask," Wachter says. While he's no longer concerned about dying or serious illness, the virus can still knock you out. Wachter watched firsthand as his wife recovered from a bout of long COVID-19. He evaluates it case by case. A small gathering where everyone is vaccinated and windows open may not require one. But sitting on an airplane or in a large, crowded theater might be a good idea to do one. "Those places, I'm wearing a mask now, and I suspect I will wear a mask forever," Wachter said. The third doctor they ask, Dr. Monica Gandhi, says we don't have to keep wearing masks, but only because, NPR claims, of the success of the vaccines that don't actually vaccinate nor stop the spread of the disease. She says the vaccines provide protection against "serious" covid illnesses. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

“The Democratic Party is the bedfellow of international communism.”
Those words from Sen. Joe McCarthy captured the gist of the Red Scare and the use of blacklists and personal attacks to silence critics. The Democrats this week appear to have taken up the same cudgel in labeling opponents and critics Russian sympathizers and fellow travelers in opposing government involvement in a massive censorship system. The Red Scare is back and it is going blue. I testified this week in Congress on the Twitter Files and how they suggest what I have called “censorship by surrogate” or proxy. The files show dozens of FBI and government employees actively seeking the censorship of citizens and others for their viewpoints. In my testimony, I warned that this was reminiscent of the McCarthy period where the FBI played a role in the establishment of blacklists for socialists, communists, and others. I encouraged Congress not to repeat its failures from the 1950s by turning a blind eye to such abuse. Posted by: SMOD at February 13, 2023 01:47 PM (RHGPo) 115

"Doctors are generally idiots. A professor of infectious diseases advocating masks is proof . Jebus."
Over-stated a bit, but yes, jebus (or jeebus). And let's not under-state the dimensions of the problem. Known ineffectual non-pharmaceutical intervention (masks) to guard against a disease with an IFR far below flu for most of the population - oh, but also taking into account an ineffective non-sterilizing vaccine against the disease (with the fall-back rationale, reducing severity of disease, unsubstantiated). And sometimes taking into account other irrelevant things which are known not to affect likelihood of transmission. A professor of infectious diseases. 151 132 Masks are the left's burkas. They will demand their use with the same religious zeal. It has nothing to do with "the science" or whether the masks are effective or not. And there's strategy involved in trying to get a DP/advance the runner. So the thumb is well on the scale to just score and go home. The could have just allowed the team to carry some pitchers on staff that can only pitch in extra innings and left it as they had had it. Or reduced the absurd specialization of relief staffs and starters only going a few innings. Steriods broke the MLB for me a long time ago. AHL has a great over-time solution (don't know how the NHL does it right now). Three-on-three, 5-minute sudden death, then if still tied, a shoot-out.
So, a special and hugely entertaining 5 minutes of what is already the fastest and most exciting team sport, followed if needed by the most dramatic tie-breaking process in sports. Last week saw an AHL game that went into over-time. Unfortunately (as far as I was concerned, and I heard others saying the same on the way out) the home team won with a goal within a minute, denying us all the 3-on-3 treat or a shoot-out. Railroads’ use of long trains to go under the microscope
By Bill Stephens | November 15, 2021 Infrastructure bill funds national study of trains longer than 7,500 feet WASHINGTON – The $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill President Biden is slated to sign into law today (Monday, Nov. 15) contains funding for a study of Class I railroads’ use of ever-longer trains and their impact on safety, grade crossings, freight and passenger service, and the environment. The measure provides up to $2 million for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to evaluate the operation of trains longer than 7,500 feet. The study will examine several operational aspects of long trains, including derailment risks; communication issues between the head end, distributed power units, and end-of-train devices; and train handling and braking. It also will look at whether engineers and conductors need additional training to safely operate long trains. https://bit.ly/3JZKYYN Posted by: rickb223 at February 13, 2023 02:28 PM (SbJgO) 403

What Mike Hammer said, unfortunately. And it goes far and way beyond "just" this jaw-dropping debacle of C19 (the public mindless compliance with bad guidance from collapsed institutions). 2020, in various dramatic ways, was an instant framework-shifter for how any thinking person sees the country and the character, capacity, and mindset of its population.

"There are still hundreds of thousands of COVID cases reported in the U.S. each week, along with a few thousand deaths related to COVID."
So a tiny percentage to begin with, plus this characterization doesn't really mean anything ever since we learned how many "Covid deaths" were actually people who died from gunshots or heart attacks or falling out of Kremlin windows but also happened to have asymptomatic Covid at the time. First, "Covid" "cases" are not people who are sick, merely people who have been tested and shown to have been exposed to the disease, but who may have fought it of or even been completely unaffected by it (that vast majority of children, for instance). Second, I say "Covid" in quotation marks because Covid is over, the Omicron variant is not Covid, it is much milder, so mild that it is merely another version of the common cold, joining the four common cold coronaviruses that already exist
Second, masks have been tested. They provide zero help in screening out viruses, which can pass through the holes in masks quit easily. They have, however, a 99% chance to harbor harmful bacteria. Pneumonia, Sepsis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, sound good? Masks have one valuable role now. They allow us to tell, at great distances, who among us are mentally lazy, cowardly slaves, and who are free men and women.
