There's a Real Environmental Catastrophe Unfolding In Ohio and the Media Is Downplaying It Or Just Not Reporting It for Some Reason

toxicplume.jpg

Let's talk more about carbon dioxide while burying the story about the train derailment that released toxic chemicals into the air of Ohio and the ensuing die-offs of fish.

A train derailment last week in Ohio has turned into a full-fledged environmental disaster, and it's received surprisingly little national media coverage.

Last Friday, a train belonging to Norfolk Southern, one of America's leading rail operators, derailed near the Pennsylvania border, leaving what the Associated Press called "a mangled and charred mass of boxcars and flames" just outside the village of East Palestine, home to about 5,000 people. The crash created a 50-car pileup--half the train's length. According to Norfolk Southern, a fifth of the cars were carrying hazardous materials.

The wreckage proceeded to burn ominously all weekend. By Sunday evening, residents near the train tracks were told to "immediately evacuate" in a sudden alert from the office of Governor Mike DeWine. He went on to warn: "There is now the potential of catastrophic tanker failure which could cause an explosion with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile."

Apparently a particular cause for concern were 14 giant tankers that were "exposed to fire" while full of hundreds of thousands of gallons of vinyl chloride. A chemical used in PVC, vinyl chloride is flammable, toxic, and a declared brain, lung, blood, and liver carcinogen. The federal government banned it from household spray cans in 1974. Breathing it "can make you dizzy or sleepy, or have a headache," a fact sheet released two days ago by the Ohio Department of Health alerts readers. "You can die from breathing extremely high levels of vinyl chloride."

It also boils at just 8 degrees Fahrenheit--meaning moving it into containers that cleanup crews could cart away probably wasn't a safe option.

Instead, the cleanup crew performed a "controlled burn," burning the stuff up.

But the byproducts of incineration are also dangerous.

Residents told the local news they "fear[ed] for their lives." One said that even indoors, "You could smell it and taste it, and I had a headache." Meanwhile, the crash site was leaching other hazardous materials besides vinyl chloride. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says they seeped into surrounding waterways, and "were immediately toxic to fish"--though it added that "actions were taken to minimize that." The agency has assured the public that, the poor aquatic life's fate notwithstanding, everybody's drinking water was "protected."

Bullsh!t.

So why is the media covering up what would usually be a four-alarm fire of a story?

Well, because it's happening on Biden's watch, and because the media knows that this disaster is once again well beyond the capabilities of the Secretary of Transportation, Mayor Butt, to manage.

So into the Quiet Pile the story goes.

toxiccloud.jpg

This Twitter user gives his own report after noting the derailment hasn't gotten much national media attention, and the media reporting it has gotten is "not good."

Stuff like this makes me think they're lying:

The governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, is very nominally a Republican. If there was actually an official RINO Party, he'd belong to it.

59 Vinyl chloride is EXTREMELY toxic.

Vinyl Chloride is the monomer that is used to make polyvinyl chloride plastic. You likely have a lot of that in your drain pipes in your house. PVC is used everywhere.

Burning it to make it into HCL is not the worst possible outcome, although this is all dangerously grotesque.

East Palestine is in the northeast corner of Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border. Pittsburgh is the largest city near it, to the southeast.
I get lots of local news coverage of this, but it is strange that it does not get more national coverage.

In other words, another government-triggered environmental disaster.

202 Lying about and intentionally ignoring these types of environmental catastrophes prove what an absolute fraud and deception the "Green Agenda" is. Other recent environmental catastrophes ignored or subject to lying from the propaganda organs were the United States' act of terrorism against Nordstream I and II, and the open border that will lead to environmental degradation along with societal decay (damage is occurring even now via the crossings). The so-called "Greens" care only about control and do not give a single damn about the environment. The Soviet Union and East Bloc were absolute environmental catastrophes and the Left's plans for the United States and Europe will produce the same.

216 I am not a chemical industrialist or a chemist so I don't know, but if I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt to the operators, it leaves me with a question that perhaps some whemists here can answer.

Was the decision to burn it off and accept the consequences of hydrogen chloride not a good choice, but perhaps the least-bad choice? If you have tankers on the brink of exploding and no way to safely move them, cool them or contain them, then is opening the valves and burning off the contents a shitty thing that has to be done simply because it's less shitty than the alternative? Because if that's the case, I can understand the decision. If it's the Kobayashi Maru and there's no way to win, then picking the way likely to make you lose the least makes some sense.

Beyond that, at what level is vinyl chloride actually dangerous? Is it PPB or PPM? Because after the initial shock in the water, dilution is usually a good thing - but if the stuff is insanely toxic then the river might be inadequate.

It's certainly bad and people should leave that area, but what are the long-term effects? Once it's over, is it over or are there more serious downstream consequences?

So why run the Nikki's, Scott's, Sununu's, Hogan's, and other such if they want DeSantis?

Only thing I can think of is a brokered convention where they insert a mystery candidate but that may as you say be giving them too much credit.

It takes more than a minor celebrity profile to win a national nomination for president. Normally, it's a massive political infrastructure that can mobilize in key states for months. Trump did it through taking up all the media oxygen in the room and saying things people liked.

They would. They're still assuming he can be controlled. They're wrong, but that's not my problem.

So why run the Nikki's, Scott's, Sununu's, Hogan's, and other such if they want DeSantis?

The others are running because it's a way to make some cash, and possibly be picked as the VP candidate. If the GOPe wants DeSantis, they're going to make sure that everyone around him is under their control.

Salmon are exquisitely genetically tuned for a particular river or stream. If you lose all the salmon in a stream, you can't replace them with other salmon - the genetics are too different. It is equivalent to wiping out an entire species.

Also, the Kiwis tossed a few salmon from the Sacramento River into a few rivers in New Zealand, and now New Zealand has huge salmon runs.

310 From what I heard, the reporter being arrested is a bit of a red herring. He was doing a live broadcast with his own commentary while they were trying to do a media briefing. They told him to take it outside. He did his little, "I'm a reporter, you can't shut down my free speech!" act.

Of course, this could all be BS, but it sounds to me like everyone's egos got involved. The person doing the media briefing could have had more patience. The reporter could have treated the briefing as a briefing and not tried to treat it like his personal live broadcast. The police could have done a simple no trespass or a warning to treat the briefing as such and follow the protocols for that. IE listen while they're talking, then ask questions in turn.

Note, I am not saying the chemical disaster is not serious. I'm not saying there isn't some coverup going on. I just don't think this narrative that they're shutting up reporters for telling the truth because it's a huge coverup is entirely correct.

319 ||EAST PALESTINE, Ohio — Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio has issued a mandatory evacuation order for those residing within a mile of a train derailment in the eastern part of the state.

The train, carrying 150-200 cars, derailed on Friday in East Palestine, Columbiana County and caught fire, stretching from a quarter to a half-mile along the tracks. Although the intensity of the fire has decreased, it is still burning as of Sunday evening.

The evacuation notice follows a “drastic temperature change” in one of the rail cars, which could lead to an explosion that could send shrapnel up to a mile away, the Governor’s Office said.||

==========

I think it's about $200 million, and yes, it's a massive warchest.

I'm sure he's got consultants crawling all over him, begging him to run and let them have a piece of that $200 million pie, but, at the same time, he stays at the top of the conservative dreamlist while knocking the left around within his own borders and doesn't have to take on an incumbent president with the largest fraud operation in history.

There's nothing saying he can't keep hold of it until 2028.

Plus, I like 'some' of Ridley's stuff, but his movies which are good/decent tend to have the same quality... kind of a sterile-ness to a lot of the movie and shots. Alien and Blade Runner are both examples of this- and I like both of those.

It's not that there was no water in the Aral Sea, it's that what remained was so salty basically nothing could live in it. After the local governments changed their policies and allowed more water to run back into it, the salinity dropped, and they seem to have successfully reintroduced flounder, mackerel, and a few other species. It's kind of a fascinating story, really.

366 According to Wiki, only flounder survived the high salinity in the Aral Sea. It has since been restocked with some native and other non-native species.

The salinity increase and drying of the lake led to the local extinction of the Aral trout, ruffe, Turkestan barbel, and all sturgeon species, and dams now block their return and migration routes; the Aral trout and Syr Darya sturgeon (Pseudoscaphirhynchus fedtschenkoi) may be extinct due to their restricted range. All other native fish, barring the stickleback (which persisted during the lake's shrinkage and salinity increase), were also extirpated, but many have returned to the North Aral Sea following its recovery from the 1990s onwards.

Maybe but the whole favorite son strategy in early primaries effectively blocks that approach. Outside candidates depend on the early three primaries of Iowa (yeah I know it is a caucus), New Hampshire, and South Carolina to build momentum as the rest of the primary schedule rapidly becomes impossible for candidates without a large infrastructure in other states.

It is a sequential game theory approach and very difficult to calculate for minor candidates as you have to have the infrastructure in later states and that requires winning the early primaries to gain money and momentum in time to set up that infrastructure for later primaries.

WTF? Where has this been happening?

A lot of the contested areas in Donetsk oblast have been fortified for years by the Ukes (it's a secret to many, but the war there's' gone on for 9 years now). So taking territory there can be very slow, costly, and even leaving aside Russia's inability to mount serious combined arms maneuver operations, it's a slog by its very nature.

And little if any of the action by either side has involved mass frontal assaults (and "frontal assaults" are kind of your only option in properly fortified areas, so smaller ones have been frequent).

They don't know what to do for such a large scale incident; don't have an adequate number of knowlegeable workers &/(or volunteers) available to safely address it, and/or don't want to take responsibility (Incident Commander) & have fingers pointed back. Private employer assistance is also needed.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) &/or others (i.e., Chemical Safety Board (CSB), etc.) that are advisory in nature, will appear to gather reports of actions that were taken, or not, in response to the incident and combine the findings into a report of corrective recommendations for abatement & best practices that are unlikely to be implemented because of time, $, infrastructure, lack of multiple agency coordination, etc.

478 Missing from all the "balloon" coverage?

With the exception of the initial 60,000 ft. altitude F-22 strike on the Original Balloon, all subsequent strikes were at altitudes easily reachable by non-exotic fighters, such as the F-15 or F-16. Both include two seat versions, with most squadrons including one such for training purposes, and F15-E Strike Eagles are all two seaters, of course.

I'll wager a $20 (same as in town), that before the Sidewinder were Fox-Two'd, that the GIB on a two-seat ship utilized a pro-grade DSLR, and zinged off hundreds of frames of still or actual video photography of the objects in question. Probably from only a few hundred yards separation on a series of close fly-bys.

We have not, of course, seen one single frame or photo from such, but I'll guarandamnteeya, they exist. They'll not let us see them (un-photoshopped, anyway), because too many out here have the knowledge and ability to examine such pics, and make sense of what they're seeing, then tell the rest of us what's up with things.

Long as we're not seeing those pics, it's proof that they're lying to us, still. Q.E.D.

Exactly my point. It was asserted that the Ukes were conducting a guerilla war. That is not the case.

And little if any of the action by either side has involved mass frontal assaults (and "frontal assaults" are kind of your only option in properly fortified areas, so smaller ones have been frequent).

Here's an example.

That is a significant overstatement. Conscript armies that Russia have are scarcely better in training and arguably poorer in morale.

Right now, most of the information we get is inaccurate particularly by authorities on the subject so you have to use indirect methods to get an rough idea of the truth. E.g. statements against interest such as using the Russian mil bloggers issuing statements against Russian interests and it is much harder to determine exactly where Ukrainians are military wise as they have been much more effective at OpSec than the Russians are. 547 What was the cause of the derailment? Was it sabotage?

Posted by: polynikes at February 13, 2023 12:21 PM

Schoolteacher in a truck on the tracks trying to stop the US Air Force from transporting an alien?

Need to check for any kids in the area who could have been filming a home movie at the time of the derailment...

(On a serious note, sabotage by environazi domestic terrorists cannot be ruled out.)

548 Geez. The railroad had an accident. Chemicals are burning. It's happened hundreds of times and we and the environment survived. Get a grip.

I consider this on the level of click bait.

549 18 USC 242: "Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States..."

The above is normally a misdemeanor, however bodily injury of the victim elevates the action to a felony. The phrase "Color of law" means pretense of law. It is used in this law because any law that claims to take Constitutional rights away from people is null and void from the moment it is written.

The reporter should have arrested the people who were arresting him, any citizen may arrest someone who commits a felony in their presence. Learn the Miranda warning.

The time for being nice, polite, and civil toward those who are uncivil, is over.

Plant run by Indians, with their noted high regard for safety, check.
Plant surrounded, right to the very fence, with a tent city full of poor Indian bums, who took the brunt of the chemical release.

553 Saw a tweet yesterday (maybe, maybe the day before) that a farmer in that area had all his chickens die.

The next town over, the release instantly killed everyone's chickens. This stuff is catnip for human cancer

"My video camera footage shows my chickens were perfectly fine before they started this burn, and as soon as they started the burn, my chickens slowed down and they died,”

557 @541 Philadelphia had the Sunoco oil refinery plant explode and go on fire for the LAST time, June 2019.

FORMER Sunoco refinery. They left the refining business in 2012, and the company does not even exist any more. I am stuck with what is left of some of their stock, "Energy Partners." They thought there'd be better money in milk and Twinkies.

A lot of us real conservatives here sure as hell have some hippy-dippy heebie-jeebies about large scale industrial processes. You are mush-mouthed weaklings. Go scrabble in the woods with the rest of the squattopee commies.

558 512 "Why is the media so reluctant to cover this massive disaster?"

Because only Americans are in danger, and many of them are not Democrats and/or from NYC.

Next question?!

560 "Instead, the cleanup crew performed a "controlled burn," burning the stuff up.

But the byproducts of incineration are also dangerous."

On this point they didn't really have a choice. A BLEVE explosion in that situation could be in the kiloton range.

Where they fucked up massively was in downplaying the environmental effects of their lesser-evil decision and generally botching the evacuations. You have locals thinking that N95 masks are going to protect them from the byproducts.

562 When Twitter first started there was a polly-anna belief that it would foster "citizen journalism" live at the scene of events totally unfiltered by press bias.

Now that Musk owns Twitter I would like to see him actually put this into real practice by employing AI to compile first hand reports of a situation and release a real "on-the-scene" news story eliminating the need for media altogether. He could replace AP reporting with good software.
