Morning again, all,
Regarding hybrid cars, Buick offered mild hybrids for some years. The Regal and LaCrosse (RIP) both did. But they offered the battery tech only with an anemic 4-cyl. engine, 180 hp. I had that in the Regal, and it was underpowered in a compact-ish car. In the heavier LaCrosse it would have been pathetic. Put the hybrid stuff with a 280-300 hp engine, and you'd have something. I'd love to have power to spare plus 40 mpg in the city. But I guess there isn't room for all of that? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 13, 2023 04:08 AM (omVj0) 5
Evening, Pixy! I'm finally reading Shute's A Town Like Alice. His portrait of the outback and Queensland (Gulf country and Cairns) ca. 1948 is fascinating.

Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at February 13, 2023 *** No, I just meant that GM apparently thinks there isn't room for both battery and a biggish 6-cyl. engine under the hood in today's cars. Though now that I think about it, doesn't the battery go in the trunk? Maybe they think their customers for a hybrid don't care about horsepower? I like a little larger car because I drive on some of the worst streets in Amerca, and a longer wheelbase tends to produce a smoother ride. And bigger cars, esp. near-luxury, have more sound insulation. I don't want to "feel the road," not here. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 13, 2023 04:15 AM (omVj0) 8

I assume California's ban on fossil fueled cars/trucks/ and just about everything else that runs on gas or diesel doesn't include hybrid vehicles. 2030 is the date when 50 percent of all cars sold need to be EV.
5 years later all must be EV. Maybe Newsome will be gone by then, but I wouldn't count on it, if he can't make the WH. Term limits? Posted by: Colin at February 13, 2023 04:46 AM (YBXGL) 17

I guess a lot of people here aren't of age to remember how the Soviets did 5 year plans? They failed and the next five year plan had similar goals, just moving goal posts. California is in Soviet plan mode with the EV ridiculousness; the industry can't deliver it and the market doesn't want it.

---------- Agreed. But what's gonna happen in real time? Let's say the deadline has come & gone; no more ICEs can be sold there. Do they grandfather all those already on the road? Or do they fk over those owners with fines, or perhaps special licensing fees? What about people (LOL) moving into CA with ICE cars? -- The U.S. market doesn't want it. The China market DOES want it (40% by 2030), and China is the U.S. manufacturers' biggest market. And China is, and has been, doing it entirely to damage the U.S. by using the U.S.' own manufacturers and economy and laws to do it. It's very smart once you understand how it all fits together. Oh, California will try and permit and tax their way to a goal but the numbers don't lie. New vehicle registrations in 2022 were roughly 13 million nationwide, 2 million in Cali. Nationwide EVs and hybrids accounted for 700 - 800 k vehicles. The only time we have seen a 13 fold increase in heavy industrial manufacturing tempo in less than a decade was WW2. As we say in my part of Texas, "you can't get there from here."

Calizuela is a failed state, but that *finally* will become apparent to even the LIV crowd in the near future. Nationwide EVs and hybrids accounted for 700 - 800 k vehicles.
-- And I suspect 50-100K, maybe even fewer, were EVs bought by private individuals (vs corporations and government). Hybrids I can understand, but they throw those numbers in to mask the actual EV numbers. Hybrids are banned, too, because they use gas engines. Posted by: JQ -- We wont. It will just be illegal for us nobodies to use it. I've posted it before, but suspect production and refinement will continue on essentially unchanged, and it will be considered a resource that the feds have to prop up with taxing and borrowing. Price per gallon might even go down once that happens because we'll be spending tax dollars, and there's no limit to tax dollars. And the added benefit is additional destruction of your savings via inflation. Sure, but I think *some* people won't play that shit. Not for long, anyhow. -- We can seethe in anger all we want. Ford, Chevy, etc. still aren't building cars for the United States market any longer "The Chinese market reached 23 mio units sold in 2016 and accounted for around 30% of global passenger car sales1" https://tinyurl.com/2q7gmrxx and states that matter to the U.S. market are outlawing gas burning cars on the - coincidentally - exact same timetable as communist China. This isn't doom and gloom or a conspiracy theory or fun speculation. This is happening as we speak, same as people losing their jobs if they didn't accept an experimental injection. And I doubt even 1% of all annual EV sales are to private individuals. No one wants them, and it doesn't matter one single bit. Posted by: If we had signed, we would have opened our borders and killed our own manufacturers - Ukraine, 2013 at February 13, 2023 06:35 AM (ZLyax) I was thinking about the phenomena of mono-cities in Sovietland. The idea that you plan out a city to do just one thing int he middle of nowhere (where no city or only a small village existed.) Now in the sovietland, as the soviet union fell apart and the demand for these singular resources went away, these cities largely failed or are in the process of failing. How is china doing their Ghost Cities? These are obviously planned growth centers, but do they lack even the virtue of producing a resource as in the Soviet case? I never see a purpose suggested for why this city is here or there. I do not know. Need to read up on them. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at February 13, 2023 06:40 AM (zZu0s) 115

Sorry dude, not buying the horsesh!t. ------- Bought a gas can in the last few years? You've bought a CARB compliant one if you have, because the manufacturers don't make two types, do they? Everyone makes a CARB (California Air Resource Board) compliant one. It doesn't matter if you live in NC or PA. You're buying a CARB compliant gas can. This is no different. He problem in China is the government funds construction. Developers propose big projects, even if there is no need, and local government officials approve the project, knowing 30% of the cost is going to line their own pockets. The result is lots of buildings, cities, and bridges to nowhere

And the other thing is, the money given to fund the project is the money given, so the less spent on actual construction, the more goes into the developer's pocket.
That is what collapsed their development bank. Money was going out, but nothing was coming in, and debts were floated with bonds backed by a few deposits for future projects. One project failed, people demanded their deposit back, and the whole house of cards fell.
