"People seem to be happier when they are shoveling or plowing. I don't know why, but it is something to be enjoyed..."
At age 29, it's gratifying to rediscover annually that one can still shovel snow without collapsing. On net, exercise is good. We only got one big snowfall so far, and it was maybe six inches. Right now we're in a stretch of fair 40-50 degF days. Posted by: Apply gp Directly To Forehead at February 12, 2023 02:05 PM (24fqN) 17

No, there's been almost no to very little snow for sometime & extreme cold may be for a few days in a row vs. weeks. (In the past, mid January through much of February had been quite cold.) It wasn't also unusual to see at least some days with light snow in late fall. 40+ days in a row last summer, no rain. It seems more than standard warm or dry spells. My husband loved doing that. Every fall, he would take the snowblower completely apart and check it out so he would be prepared. After a big storm, he would not only do our driveway but some of the neighbors too. Our driveway was 150 ft long with a large turn around area. He would sometimes go out in the middle of the night and do a pass so it didn't pile up too much.
It was winter when my husband got seriously ill and was hospitalized. I woke up around 2 am and my next door neighbor was clearing my driveway to make sure I could get to the hospital. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at February 12, 2023 02:42 PM (Y+l9t) 94
Got 22 inches of snow in one storm the first year here. Since then, I've basically had to scrape an inch or two off the walkway a couple times. At least I got to use the propane torch to melt some compacted snow the shovel wouldn't move this year.

I've used my snowblower once in the last two years. I didn't miss using it.
Advice for anyone who has a typical suburban driveway and sidewalk : buy the smallest two-stage snowblower you can find. I started out with a single stage, which was useless for more than four or five inches of snow, then moved up to a much larger two-stage, which handles deeper snow easily, but is a beast to maneuver. For the amount of area I need to clear, I think I would be happier with a smaller two-stage. Obviously, if you have a larger area to clear, a bigger one would be useful. Posted by: 18-1 at February 12, 2023 02:05 PM (lc5cP) That actually might be workable for homeowners with typical driveways and sidewalks, since usage is short-term and intermittent. Not so much for the guys who are out all day clearing sidewalks at commercial properties. I rarely spend more that 20 or 30 minutes clearing snow off my driveway and sidewalk. I wonder how much the battery to run a snow blower for 30-45 minutes would weigh? Posted by: a.moron at February 12, 2023 02:48 PM (F6Xpw) 111

I ruined a snowblower once because a stupid coworker filled the company 2.5 gallon gas tank -- which is red and is supposed to only ever have gasoline in it -- with pure chemical ALKALI.
I guess he wanted it in a smaller container, and was using it months earlier to clean brick grout on the kitchen floor in the restaurant. And didn't label it. And didn't empty it. And just put it right back where the gas can goes. Absolutely retarded. How the hell was I supposed to know the idiot did that? Who smells the nozzle before they pour gas into a small engine?? Well, I do, after that. Me and the guy trying to get the engine started ended up with burns on our hands from it eating all the engine gaskets, and burns on the carpet in his minivan from when we took it to the Ace Hardware for them to look at. I bought 2 snow joe li-ion snowblowers for our outside decks (house and barn). They work good for light to semi light stuff. A 40V battery pack will do most of my 12x36 ft barn deck on one charge. I got a backup. I'm in mtns of Idaho, so tractor mounted snowblower, honda gas hand snowblower, the neighbor guy who brings his loader to do the heavy lifting. One more thing about electrics...the snow joe manual says "if this battery pack has been left outside in lower than 32 deg f temps for more than 60 minutes, you must throw it away due to the fire risk. We had a snow blower when we lived in Connecticut and we needed it every winter we lived there. I would wheel that thing out of the shed in late September, change the oil, replace the sear pins and make sure everything worked. I would run it up and down the driveway for about 30 minutes to make sure nothing was broke and everything worked good. The neighbors thought I was crazy, but my snow blower never broke in the middle of winter.

May I whine about our first-world problem? Both of our vehicles are having issues where they refuse to start. One has a fairly new battery. The other we just yesterday took to O'Reilly's and they tested the battery and the starter and both looked fine. It's kinda weird that both cars developed problems around the same time.
I don't know if there is an environmental element at play here (off-street parking, no garage) or something more nefarious. Our cars have never known the luxury of a garage, so that is not a new situation for them. We live in a safe neighborhood with one cranky dude who occasionally causes loud and vulgar disturbances (drugs or mental illness; lives with mom and thinks the world is picking on him) and regularly trespasses through a neighbor's backyard. I called him out once when he did that, so I may have made myself a target. Anyway, is it possible we are experiencing sabotage? Posted by: That Northern skulker at February 12, 2023 03:05 PM (VdGjU) Neighbor down the street has one, and likes it. He has two batteries and needs to swap them half way through. Which is fine, since there's a week or so between mows to recharge them. Unlike trying to roadtrip in an electric car. When I was a little kid my dad had a plug-in electric mower. He called is his "Sunday morning mower" because he could use it early in the morning without disturbing the neighbors. He dragged a long extension cord behind him and had to be careful not to run over the cord. I recall the extension cord looked like it had been spliced in a couple of places. He got a gas mower before I was old enough to starting mowing the lawn. When my 20 year old Craftsman gas mower dies, I may get an electric. Battery, not plug-in. I gave up and bought an ergonomic snow shovel. I suspect that's it for the snow. It was about ankle deep. I did use the 4x4 on the car, cause I have it.
This town has a couple of roads marked as snow emergency lanes. I suspect those are the ones they plow. But I saw all sorts of snow removal rigs in town. I think folks that have them come in and plow. Not sure the city has that kind of equipment. Posted by: Notsothoreau at February 12, 2023 03:31 PM (4IUUf) 171
Maj Healey,
The Snow Joe battery packs are Lithium Ion, 40V. The manual states: Prevent the litium-ion battery pack from freezing. Battery packs that were stored below 32 deg F for more than 60 minutes must be discarded. Maybe overly paranoid, but we've all seen the videos of these things spontaneously turning into a chemical fire nightmare in 3 seconds. @155
The difference is that the terminals aren't connected to anything while in storage. They still drain faster in colder weather while installed. Posted by: Chairman LMAO at February 12, 2023 03:31 PM (ssESX) 173

It definitely gets below 32 degrees in there. At times it gets so cold the refrigerator we have in the garage stops working. Granted none of the batteries are plugged into the tools or mower but they sit there all winter with zero issues so far. 6 years here in NE Texas and counting and another 5 years in the same circumstances in Kentucky for a total of 11 years on some batteries with zero issues. That is exactly what I want. I didn't move a lot of furniture as it seemed pretty easy to find. But that's not true here. People seem to go to auctions, which I haven't tried yet. And I saw some nice stuff in the Abilene antique stores. I like worn furniture. And since I'm not moving again, I could use some. I am hoping to have better luck looking this spring. The straight handled red metal curved blade ones are snow "Shovers", just push it to the sides, not made to lift much. The "shovels" (shove>elevate) are more square bladed, and for years I saw those goofy bent handled ones and scoffed at people insisting on re-inventing something that had worked great for centuries. Then I tried one...OMG! soooo much easier on the back, sides, shoulders. I shove down the center of the drives, then from that center strip off towards the sides...where it then gets too thick to shove I start with the shovels and pitch it.
Several years ago an old lady on the neighborhood web page posted that she had a dialysis appt the next morning, and the guy that usually shoveled her drive had had a heart attack before he got to her...could someone help? I went and did it. No Charge. Be careful about helping little old ladies...they tell all of their friends about it. Now I do 6 of them's drives/walks. Last year, after the final really heavy snowfall, where I had to shovel them all three times to stay ahead of it, that 1st lady mentioned..."Oh, by the way, there is a snowblower in the garage, my husband bought it before he died 5 years ago, only used it once. Maybe you could figure out how to start it?". I dug it out from under and behind a buch of stuff, loaded it in the jeep , took it home and changed the fuel, fuel lines, filter, took apart and cleaned the carb and it fired right up. Took it back to her and told her how much I looked forward to using it the next winter....She said "Well, I told my son you fixed it, and he wants it. Sooo, you'll be back to shovels" Whaaaat??? You have a SON living nearby and he has been letting ME shovel for you for 4 FRIKN YEARS???. !st snow the next year it was there so I used it...she called me later saying her son had hurt his back, and was going to hire some to do HIS driveway, I could keep the snowblower if I wanted it. I got one of those hitch mount platforms and hauled it around doing the other folks drives. Jeep died, now I'm back to shovels until I fix it. Last snow was only about 4 inches but WET, very heavy...
