I knew a woman who said that when she was working in her dad's service station back in the 1950s, a woman came in to get the air in her tires changed and would not take no for an answer. So, my friend checked the tires with a pressure gauge and told her her air was still good for at least 1000 miles. Another satisfied customer.

Hello all.
My thought for the thread - The SS lottery caused a lot of survivor's guilt and led to a lot of kids who had high numbers protesting the war because of it. Likewise many who got deferments channeled guilt into sit-ins and protests. They were rationalizing their luck or cowardice by asserting that the war was a mistake, and those who did not go were the real heroes. 71, we’ll name calling isn’t exactly fabulous leadership material and should be reigned in, and if he wants to expand into the arts, he should consider another entity to do that. There is a void for conservative arts. The term bullying is so millennial and overused, I just struggle with it. If you are an executive, you have standing to speak your opinion. You are, afterward, obligated to march to the drum the CEO is beating, assuming it’s ethical and laws aren’t being broken. This doesn’t scream send James packing to me.

My draft number story. So I started college in the fall of 1974. The draft was still going on, I had to register for it in 1974, but the draft callups were winding down.
So in the spring of '75, they posted somewhere on campus the draft numbers for 1974. My roommate and I had a bet: Whoever had the better (i.e., higher) number would be owed a 6-pack (of Old Milwaukee @ $1.29 a six). So he comes back to the room telling me I owe him a 6-pack because his number is around 310. I told him I haven't checked yet. Turns out my number was 348. I won a 6-pack. I'd say winning the draft lottery, even though the war was essentially over, was the biggest and best win I could ever hope to have. Kids today have no clue how one's fate was determined by two spinning caged drums with capsules containing year dates in one and numbers 1 to 365 (6) in the other. All I know is, for young males, the drawing was 'must see tv'. There's also a story how a person with # 20 in '70 became an Elmer Gantry-type Methodist minister, thanks to a religious exemption. Yeah, fun times. I did luck out however. Went through Bacsic at Fort Dix and after Basic was awarded my new MOS. Was assigned to Fort Gordon, GA as a Radio and Television Specialist. Assigned to the Television Division. Guess my electronics background and graduation from the RCA School of TV Production And Studio operation came up in their records. Many of the other guys from my Basic company, "Charlie Company" wound up in 'Nam". Received orders for 'Nam once during my stay at Fort Gordon, but they were rescinded 24 hours later. Ah yes, the classic Fool's Errand prank.
The food and beverage industry is rife with them, and it's a bit of an initiation ritual. My own was to be sent across the street to ask the other restaurant if we could borrow a "shelf-stretcher". But some of the more classic ones I have witnessed (and perhaps taken part in) was sending a new dishwasher across to another restaurant with a 5 gallon bucket sealed with Saran Wrap to ask them if we could borrow some steam since our steamer was down. Another was to tell the dishwasher that the machine was down on detergent, to go next door and ask if we could borrow a quart of A.I.R. One of my personal favorites was to tell the new server their closing duty was to empty out the hot water dispenser on the coffee machine (which is plumbed in and never stops). Every server would pass by the server who was frustrated by how long it was taking and say "Oh man, you got the dispenser duty. It takes a while, it's a big tank." Well, we had this account that was behind, and it was really too far behind for an amount we couldn't write off. My job was to be a reminder and start payments back up, and advise the account it was accruing interest as it wasn't being paid. So I got a couple of the boys and we got in my car and went down, I got one of the boys to go watch the back door and we kicked in the front doors and frog marched the account into the stock room where we convinced him to rake the till for us for the down payment and that next time we would be bringing a pair of bolt-cutters for his nose. About then, as a benefit, the boy I put in the alley came in with the account's son in a half nelon and we told them both the kid didn't want us to see us back neither. As a result, we got regular installments on the account and if there was going to be a late pay, we were able to schedule it. Easy. Posted by: Kindltot at February 09, 2023 10:53 PM (xhaym) 225

Feb 6. Nearing Anzio at 0900. Should dock soon. About 8 or 10 shells came into harbor as we came in. Feb 6 Docked about 1030. Moved down to Nettuno, VI Corps HQ. Shells dropping in town all day Put up for night in a pink house in Nettuno. Quiet night. Feb 7. General decided to set up Hq in Nettuno so we started cleaning a house for it. Bombing raid across port and VI Corps Hq blew in our house. Luckily only one of the Sgts was there and he was only scratched. Years later, for student loans I had to certify that I had registered for the draft. I wrote a paragraph explaining the situation and apparently that was good enough. But for good measure I sent in the card anyway. Several months later I got a letter from the SSS thanking me for my patriotism but turning me down because I was too old.

My dad got a 6-month deferment because he was working at Oak Ridge (it wasn't called that yet). When he came up to the draft board the next time, he told them he might as well go because everyone else was. Served 1942 to 1946, made it all the way to the exalted rank of PFC. Got shot in France, had an unusual collection of jobs over his 4 years. Ranger, ship's carpenter, cargo checker, air crew member, POW guard.

My own thought is that pivoting to Rome, was politically shrewd, on the eve of Normandy landings and th Allies needing a visible victory. But militarily dumb as it allowed Kesselring to move several divisions north that would have been trapped if the major roads had been blocked.

Muldoon, I think that's the crux of the debate - Rome or east/cut the roads. I have read some accounts that the eastward movement was not a done deal, the Germans could and partially did put a stop to that operational direction, and were increasingly in a position to do so as their forces retreated north. Which would make the "debate" sort of moot.
And - absolutely, about the map idea. Vietnam War Draft Lottery
--------- Interesting. Didn't know much about that. Did some research on how the Selective Service does that (they have a lottery ball machine that first selects a Date, and then a sequence from 1-365 or 366 if 20 years after a Leap Year) -- and proceed until all are matched. Had I been born on August 26, 1950, I would NOT have been drafted in 1970 ... but those born two days earlier that year would have been. Jeebus. Had the war been still going in 1981, and had I been drafted (as a patriotic young gung-ho conservative warrior), I certainly would have went (or likely enlisted). And I probably would have died early on -- since the first time I played paintball, I went crazy at the start and charged the enemy flag all alone -- only to be shot several times by the numerous flag defenders. [During the third game, I'd learned enough to adapt & survive, and captured the enemy flag -- returning it to our base to win. I was so excited, I started hyperventilating for the first time and wondered what the hell was happening to me ... ah, to be young again.] Posted by: ShainS -- I'm a Freeborn Man of the USA at February 10, 2023 01:14 AM (VV/gG) 390
My draft # was 75. If my birthday was a day earlier my draft # would not have been called. Story of my life.

My one and only "helicopter ride" was on the seat of a Jungle Penetrator, back in '85 or so. San Antonio. Very long story, made short as I can. Heavy local flooding. Radio sends out "needs boat". I take mine to nearby flooded (26' deep!) road crossing. Driving victim & fireman stranded in tree. Volunteer boat, Chief says "You Drive!", and so I did. Successfully reach tree. Stranded fireman STEPS ON gunwale of boat, flipping it. We're all in different trees now. Weather too heavy, have to wait 2 hrs for Huey. Rode up with their Rescueman. I was rappelling tall buildings for a living then, not a care in the world. I was calming HIM down, lol. That's my only helicopter ride. (awarded "Hildago" award by Bexar County Commissioners, we can look it up if you doubt.) Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at February 10, 2023 01:38 AM (e6UQI) 396

This sides mixing up is a thing. Watching Tucker tonight, it's now clear that actual self-defense will be charged as murder, and actual murder will be treated as self-defense. No, but his buddies sure gave me a bit of a rally at the ceremony, kind of miffed him, I think? Related. Leon Valley VFD Fire Chief saved HUNDREDS months later, when he drove Suburban Code 3 into grounds where Pope was going to appear in San Antonio. Massive thunderstorms DID roll in, toppling 100s of ft. tall ceremonial towers. Would've been Fresh Squeezed Pope, otherwise. Later that year or next, LVFD Chief succumbed to major heart attack. He was a HOSS of a man; I was honored to know him. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at February 10, 2023 01:56 AM (e6UQI) 403

Miley, I read a good book a while back that stuck with me, it was beautifully written by Thomas Moran, entitled The World I Made For Her. Fentanyl addiction played a part in it. I think that you would like it, but what do I know, people's taste in literature certainly varies.

Following the Vietnam Draft Lottery, I got this message
"YOUR DRAFT NUMBER 230 WAS NOT CALLED IN 1970. If your birthday was just 1 day earlier, your draft number would have been called." The practical consequence was that when I graduated that spring, the likelihood I would be drafted meant no company wanted to employ me just to have me sent to "The 'Nam" before I would have settled in and done some useful work for the money they had paid me. Excluding young white males from the civilan work force is not a new thing. Posted by: MachiasPrivateer at February 10, 2023 03:25 AM (EMi53) 417

Morning, folken,
That draft lottery thing, brrrr. I was old enough, though 3 years younger than the website postulates, and my birthday had a high number. I never had to go. Good thing, as I'd have probably gotten myself killed doing something stupid over there. (Or doing something smart, or nothing at all.) Posted by: Hatari Somewhere on Ventura Highway at February 10, 2023 *** Well, sure, if I could have gotten sent to Germany, if they'd stuck me in an office or warehouse, no problem.
