Chris Sununu, Larry Hogan, and Trump Are All Piling on "Meatball Ron"

I know polls mean nothing, especially this far out, but a New York Post poll finds that DeSantis beats Trump head-to-head, but Trump beats DeSantis as long as there are other non-Trump candidates in the race to split the non-Trump vote.

Like that idiot Nikki Haley.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis leads former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2024 GOP presidential primary, as long as former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley stays on the sidelines, a new poll finds.

In a head-to-head matchup, DeSantis, 44, gets the better of the 76-year-old former commander-in-chief, the Yahoo News/YouGov survey released Wednesday shows -- with 45% of registered Republican voters or GOP-leaning independents favoring the Florida governor and 41% supporting Trump. With Haley in the mix, however, the survey finds Trump leads the field with 38% support, followed by DeSantis (35%) and Haley (11%).

Haley, who served as US ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump administration, is expected to announce her 2024 presidential candidacy on Feb. 15. At 11%, she is polling better than former Vice President Mike Pence (4%), former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2%), and former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (1%), according to the survey.

Fortunately for Trump, many liberals are planning to run as "Republicans Who Hate the Republican Party" in 2024.

Pro-abortion "libertarian" liberal Chris Sununu took a shot at DeSantis, saying that DeSantis wasn't strong on "personal freedom" -- like the right to abortion -- like he and "socially-liberal libertarian Republicans" -- that is, Democrats -- are.

Sununu sees a group of leaders -- the party's would-be presidential contenders, himself included -- but said "you never pin leadership of a party on one individual, you really can't."

The governors were clearer on what they don't want to see from their party going forward: The heckling some Republican lawmakers did during Biden's State of the Union speech.

"The Republicans, frankly, were rude. There's no doubt about it," Sununu said, describing Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' response to Biden's address as "very politically driven" and "unhelpful" in its suggestion that "all Democrats are crazy."

Alexa Henning, Huckabee Sanders' communications director, rejected Sununu's criticisms. "That isn't what she said," Henning said, "so it's actually Chris that assumes half the country is crazy."

Don't call him a moderate. Sununu made it clear Thursday, as he mulls a 2024 presidential bid, that he's as conservative -- if not more conservative -- than any Republican discussing a presidential bid.

"I'm ranked the most fiscally conservative governor in the country. I'm No. 1 in personal freedoms. Sorry, Ron, you're No. 2," Sununu said in a knock on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who's considered a presidential frontrunner.

The libertarian-leaning Cato Institute ranked Sununu second-most fiscally conservative, behind Iowa's GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds. DeSantis was ranked 20th, behind some Democrats, including Cooper.

"Am I more moderate on social issues? Yeah, maybe," Sununu, who typically describes himself as "pro-choice," said. "But I've gotta stand for management. I'm a manager. I'm a CEO."

What he means by strong on "personal freedoms" is what all "libertarians" mean by it: When the Democrats weaponize the power of government against the citizen, Republicans can't fight back.

And also, that abortion is a sacrament.

And so is transgender conversion "therapy" for children.

Liberal Republican hopeful Larry Hogan, who has previously attacked Ron DeSantis for the Parental Rights In Education bill -- like other "moderate" Republicans, Hogan supports pink-haired teachers secretly transitioning your children behind your back.

He also opposed DeSantis' ban on cruise lines imposing their own vaccine mandates. He, like all other liberal Republicans, is big on supporting corporations' rights vis-a-vis the government -- but when it comes to people's rights to be free of government mandates, suddenly his pretty songs about "freedom" stop entirely.

Corporations have rights. People don't. Mitt Romney 2012.

A couple of weeks ago Hogan said DeSantis didn't have "broad appeal among voters" because DeSantis, unlike Hogan and Sununu, concentrates too much on pleasing Republican voters and not Democrats as these "moderates" think is the most important thing.

Outgoing Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said that Governor Ron DeSantis does a great job of "capturing attention" among his Republican base but hasn't done enough to reach out to swing voters.

"I mean, he's done a really good job of getting on Fox News, and he's capturing a lot of attention, but he certainly hasn't done it the way Charlie Baker and Phil Scott and I have," Hogan told CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday.

Hogan, a Republican who left office on Wednesday, told Tapper that if he wants to run for president he would have to figure out a way to capture voters in the middle.

"I just think that he is focused on the base and he's, he's doing pretty well with the base," Hogan told Tapper, "but he's gonna have to figure out a way -- if he wants to have a political future beyond Florida -- to appeal to a broader audience."

The Times claims that Trump has a couple of new nickames for DeSantis:

Former President Donald Trump is trying out new nicknames for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, including "Meatball Ron," per The New York Times.

Trump has used the insult, which is meant as a jab at DeSantis' appearance, in private conversations, The Times reported on Sunday.

Trump has also called DeSantis "Shutdown Ron" in private, per The Times. This is a reference to DeSantis' March 2020 executive order that temporarily closed bars and nightclubs in Florida because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Shutdown Ron" is a non-starter, Muh Dude. You shut down the whole country, remember?

Trump denies calling DeSantis "Meatball Ron" but it does sound... Trumpish.

"All of the Fake News is reporting that I spend large amounts of my time coming up with a good 'nickname' for Ron DeSanctimonious, who is obviously going to give the presidential 'thing' a shot," Trump wrote. "They are all 100% wrong, I don't even think about it -- A very unimportant subject to me!!!"

He says he spends no time trying to craft a good "nickname" (his quotes) for "Ron DeSanctimonious."

Is he trying to say he's already found his winner? I think I like "Meatball Ron" better than "Ron DeSanctimonious." Meatball Ron is a dumb nickname that knows it's a dumb nickname. "Ron DeSanctimonious" is a dumb nickname that thinks it's being clever.

Meanwhile, DeSantis hasn't made up his mind about running, but he's leaning in favor of it. He's thinking about the summer as a time to announce his run.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is inching closer to launching a White House bid for 2024, with the Florida governor reportedly eyeing an announcement in late May or early June.

Although DeSantis has not announced whether he intends to seek the GOP presidential nomination, several Republican advisers close to the governor say he has already made up his mind on the matter. However, an announcement is not expected to come until after the Sunshine State concludes its legislative session in late May.

"I think his mind is pretty much made up at this point," a GOP operative told the Hill. "My read on it is: Let's get through [the legislative] session, get some stuff done, and see where things stand. But unless something changes drastically between now and then, I'd say he's a go."

Advisers for DeSantis have already begun the hiring process to beef up his campaign team, with some of the governor's advisers laying the groundwork for a national campaign, the outlet reported. However, it's still unclear when he may make the final announcement -- with some GOP operatives pushing him to make the move sooner rather than later.

10 There's a lot to like about DeSantis but he's going to have to throw down with the GOP establishment to demonstrate he's NOT going to be their boy as President. The biggest, fattest, easiest pinata in Republican politics today is Mitch McConnell. Almost the entirety of GOP voters hate him. Only the money men like him. If DeSantis doesn't start bashing McConnell, that's going to be a troubling sign.

13 Frankly Trump doing this kind of stuff makes me think he's more interested in power than solutions. I know, its part of campaigning but someone who wants your vote that badly makes me suspicious.

His previous campaign had some of this but it was mostly just "here's what's wrong and how I'll approach things" which I prefer greatly.

But as I have said before, it doesn't even matter in the end. No Republican is able to win the presidency until something significant changes, and even if they could, they probably cannot get anything done with the entrenched bureaucracy in place.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 13, 2023 06:02 PM (0hOvj)

14 Remember how Obumbles mocked Trump which made Trump want to run? And if Trump has to destroy "Meatball Ron" to win, how many former Trump voters decide they are done with Trump. This is a path he needs to cut with precision, and in typical Trump fashion he opts for daisy cutters.

Posted by: Bete at February 13, 2023 06:02 PM (0P75b)

Circular firing squad. As if the base's predilections mattered.

There's no circle. Nobody's firing within range of the Party. That's the whole point of the scam.

71 Going from barely winning to increasing that by 20% shows Ron has the *demonstrated* ability to appeal to "moderates" and even *Democrats*, in Florida so far. This is piquing the interest of the base elsewhere, which is in the stage of "fantasy campaign" that only the base plays. I think if and when he announces, things will look differently, to Hogan's chagrin.

The document includes over 200 anti-white slurs like, "snow pigs," "saltine cracker," "unseasoned chicken, "colonizer," "cotton ball,"ku klux karen," "neanderthal monkey," and "failed abortions."

Members of the BSU openly bragged about the names they created on the list, and mocked white people repeatedly. According to the whistleblower who is a member of the union, the group has a history of being discriminatory of members who do not share the same opinions as them. They also expressed that they shared the contents of the group chat because they wanted to take a stand against blatant, anti-white racism.

It sounds like this was the less crater-inducing way to fix a problem with zero good solutions.

Why it took a long time to even tell people to evacuate is a significant question.

They've been treated like shit most of their whole life, you think that kind of guilt trip will work on them? The bullshit Romney defense of suck it up and pull the lever, just vote harder?

They'll gladly let the country and people in it fall apart if only so people can feel the way they do every day.

You let the Megan McCains and Mitt Romneys get away with the principled objector stance, then want the stupid middle class plebs to not stick by their convictions? Nah, that's not how it works, and they can see right through it. Give them what they want, what they frankly deserve in all honesty, instead of trying to bully them into compliance.

353 I appreciate how straight forward and honest right wingers are and how they demand openly verbal support from their leaders.

But that is all we get. Just a few open ended statements about conservative values and then thousands of knives in the back after the election.

354 Trump is alpha male and has zero support from Conservative Inc., he has no choice but the attack. DeSantis(who I like) is already "I won re-election", yada...

The Republican Governor's association is pre-eminent in DeSantis' funding by the multinational donors like Ken Griffin.

I listen to multiple radio/podcast's and callers who have the same voice but different names are showing up touting DeSantis - the Machine is warming up to him.

Like I always say - I know exactly what I am getting with Trump as he already did it. I know nothing about a national DeSantis other than his multinational donors.

Peace

359 "All these Trump v. DeSantis fighting"

Hang on there. Its the reverse. Trump supporters aren't starting this sht, Team DeSantis.

Father told your hippie fiance to drop the Native American Extinction lectures at the Thanksgiving Dinner. And he just kept trying to find clever ways to insert it into the conversation, like how Mrs Edwards garden would look even more vibrant if there was Native American around to explain maize to her. And your Father's the jackass?

I think Howard looks even better with a wishbone piercing stapling his tongue to his nose ring. Who knows, the other hippies might start - sweetie are you leaving? I wrapped up some leftover cobbler for Howie, it's his fav - oh ... yah yeah you need to put it in a blender sweetie? you there?

360 "Either they think their butthurt is more important than the future of the country"

LOL. That's the pact we had - hold your nose and vote for the party nominee for president - for the good of the party. We did so for McCain Romney. When was their turn to support OUR guy, they bolted the party.

And you think you can recycle that bullsht? Oh bless your heart. be sure to do it at a distance over the internet and not in person.

I would rather let everything burn than "get over' betrayal after betrayal after betrayal. Im sure your grandkids will be just peachy fine under Marxist rule, probably as trans sextoys or something, But go ahead and roll the dice on what I suspect is going to be a discount Eye Patch McCain who had good show in the Rose Bowl but has yet to play a down in the NFL.

I am Trump or bust for 2024. This is the time for Loyalty. If you want leaders that are loyal to you then you to prove you can remain loyal to them.

363 "Mr. Kelly, his attorney stated, saw an AK-47 pointed right at him and reacted by firing warning shots from his rifle “hoping to scare them away from him, his wife, his animals, and his home. As he shot, Mr. Kelly took care to aim well over the heads of the armed group of men.” Mr. Kelly denied firing directly at anybody."

If that's accurate, and he wasn't actually aiming at anyone, he basically is admitting to manslaughter- not murder. Pro-tip- if you fire in self-defense it means you believed you were in imminent danger of serious bodily harm and were intending to hit the bad guy to stop the threat. You're not firing over their heads, you're firing at them.
