Big Data is dead. (Mother Duck)

There was a movement early this millennium toward sophisticated solutions for managing big data - datasets too large to fit on a single machine. The article notes that depending on your platform this might not have been that large at the time: The original virtual server offering from Amazon came in a single size with just 2GB of RAM.

Today you can get an EC2 instance with 24TB of RAM and 448 CPU cores. Sure, it costs $150,000 per month, but... Actually that's kind of a lot. Still probably cheaper than staffing up an entire team of engineers to manage your big data platform.
The Razor Blade 16 is terribly expensive but not terrible. (Hot Hardware)

It has a 3840x2400 screen, an Intel 13950HX (8P plus 16E cores), 32GB of RAM, a mobile RTX 4090 with 16GB of VRAM (basically a 4080), and dual 1TB SSDs.

It lacks the Four Essential Keys and costs over $4000. On the other hand it's very fast, surprisingly quiet, and has an adequate amount of memory and storage.
The desktop RTX 4070 and 4060 are expected by the middle of the year. (WCCFTech)

As always, it comes down to price. The current generation of video cards are all overpriced, except perhaps Intel's A750 at $250.
AMD's Ryzen 7040 laptop chips don't have PCIe 5.0. (Tom's Hardware)

Which is not in any way a surprise. There's little point to PCIe 5.0 anywhere right now, and all it would do on a laptop is decrease battery life.

11 Humidity is back up, and so is the temp, 69 F. If this were June, I'd say it's great. For February, it's revolting.

The kittens are doing well. Stirling is coming up on 11 months, and Dagny is right behind at 10.5. They're pretty close to being adults now, but being healthy and bright, they play (and drive me nuts) like kittens.

Heh. Since I have been able to get the site somewhat stable my hours have been coming back down, so I have been going back to the weights a bit. I miss the days when you might be a bit sore the next day, but it was minor and would go away. Now, Ibuprofen is almost necessary. I 'think' about doing cardio.

The most I ever got at a former company was 'Lean management' courses. There were some good concepts in there, but it was also designed around JiT- which has it's own problems. A lot of the principles though can be carried over to other forms of manufacturing. The breakdown of JiT is what has led to a lot of the 'supply chain' problems we have seen since Chinese Lung AIDS. JiT works well (sort of) when everything is great and transportation is cheap.

Truly I doubt if I'd have the courage, unless they forced me into it in the last couple of weeks before I actually retired. Then, as someone suggested here, I'd be free and could have some fun.

As for my workout, it's gotten dull. I go over the same route every time; the main variation is the temp, and soon enough there will be no variation in the temp. We used to have a little free gym w/ weight machines right here on the property, but the A/C in it broke 3 years ago and now the room is padlocked. The YouFit I can walk to doesn't open until 6 am, too late for me, and the other 2 places, while close, require me to drive. Still, I need to do something.

Before that the all the factories went thru Total Quality. The never ending we gotta do this it's not just a short time fix this time you guys.
Spent 3 years on that. After two years you could see it was losing steam, mainly because it was costing a lot in meetings, awards, free lunches etc. Then they decided that we achieved TQ and carry on just making money.

That is not an unreasonable reply. It requires a certain amount of time to determine just what time it was at a certain instant. With precision. They can tell you what time it is, astronomically, to microsecond precision. Unfortunately, it takes about a week or so to fix that to said microsecond precision.

Now, even atomic time requires an ensemble of atomic clocks. You've got to do a long averaging and so forth of the output of that ensemble.

The current master clock at the NIST's facility in Boulder can keep time to 1 second in 100 million years. It's known as a "Cesium fountain clock". But it takes time to read it. And average it out with the others.

As you can see from that DUT1 table, the Erf rotation has been speeding up. In fact, sometime recently the Erf was spinning the fastest it has ever had since those precision measurements were possible.

As a result, we haven't had to add a leap second since the end of 2016. Everyone thinks this a just a temporary thing, but if it keeps up, we'll need the first ever negative leap second.

A negative leap second would probably be the end of the world. No telling how many computer systems would crash. it's neve been done before, and there's no telling what would happen.

All this is entirely unnecessary. You just define civil time to tick at UT1, and everything would be okay. No leap seconds. But some idiots, back in 1970, decided that UTC should tick at atomic rate (TAI) but not be different from UT1 by more than 0.9s. That is what started the leap second mess.

UT1 is the modern, precise meaning of the old Greenwich Mean Time, an astronomical time. UT1 seconds are thus not constant, but close enough for all civil purposes.

They used to do this, until 1970. They'd just "slew" the tick rate of atomic clocks to keep in time with UT1. This produced "rubber seconds", which varried ove a few microseconds. Nothing to worry about for civil purposes.

In 1970, when the current Time Regime was decreed, the definition of the SI (atomic) second was such that the Mean Erf Solar Day was 86,400.003 s long.

Thus, from the get-go, that meant the UTC would thus tick ahead of UT1 by 3 ms per day. Thus, doing the math, you'd need a leap second every 6 months or so.

You'll hear many people claim that changes in the Erf's rotation are why leap seconds were needed. Nope, that was built into it from the get-go, by the definition of the SI second. It is changes in the frequency of leap seconds needed that are due to changes in the Erf rotation rate.

At last, the Erf's rotation had speeded up to where the mean solar day was 86, 399.999 SI seconds.

You don't want time to get out of sync with the Sun too much for civil purposes. So, the result New Time Regime will likely be something like a Leap Minute every 1000 years.

That is, every Millennium, we'll have a big Ceremony where we add an extra minute to the end of a year.
