Clear Cool Water Cafe

isleofsky.jpg
Isle of Skye, Scotland
via "nomadtravelers"

If you've been spending hours trying to duplicate the steps of the blonde girl's dance from Matilda -- like garrett is doing-- this should help. Oh, and here's the Dragula dub.

This girl does an unboxing and demonstration of her new "wood-splitting sword," that is, an ax that looks like a sword. I think I want one.

Kids enjoying a muddy hill. Their moms won't be happy but the punishment happens in the future so it doesn't exist.

One of those turn-upside-down roller coasters.

He meant to do that.

Very neat -- I think it is is a rotating-fan like projection screen, or scrim, which seems to disappear (as fan blades do when they move fast), leaving only the image projected on to the blades visible, and floating in air.

Or the blades themselves have LED lights and are themselves producing the image.

Or: It's just fake, and I've been punked into being The Big Dummy again.

Galloping crocodile, moving pretty darned fast.

Very dumb girls try to refuel their car. This feels like it has to be fake, but... it's also very plausible.

Using BJJ against a dog. The dog's tail is wagging the whole time so I don't know if putting him into a headlock was necessary, but he seems okay.

Is this real? Probably not, I don't know. You know, deep fakes and cheap special effects program are making it really hard to put together a Cafe without looking like a total dope.

And speaking of hot, Dolly tells the story about the song, Jolene, claiming Jolene was some chick who was making eyeballs at her husband. Said something about wanting to scratch the woman's eyes out.

Yeah, I ain't buying it, Dolly. I think Jolene is... you!

I think some mousy chick had a man who Dolly was making googly eyes at, maybe just goofing around for fun, and this gal was like, jeez, you're Dolly Parton, just look at you, you can have any man you want. Please don't take mine.

That's what I think, and if she wants to claim otherwise, so be it. Like I said, I ain't buyin' it.

56 I had something similar to the cyclist and the car happen to me once. I was racing a friend on 10 speeds one day and as we went around the side of a school he cut me off of my turn. I went wide and looked up and I was going to hit the front of a parked car ... with 2 people sitting in it at speed. I remember thinking there had to be some way to survive this and made a little adjustment on instinct and then watched the faces of the two ladies as I came into their car. The bike hit, reflected back off and I ended up on the ground, next to the bike, in front of the car without any damage to car, bike, or me. I started laughing uncontrollably, which made the couple in the car think I was brain damaged or something.

Posted by: Taq, Rickrolled by Jesus at February 08, 2023 08:15 PM (iKBwy)

The zoopraxiscope was the very first device to give the appearance of moving images. Based on the photographic work of Eadweard Muybridge to settle a bet on whether a horse had all four feet off the ground at once, he developed a series of triggered cameras. When flipping through the images he found that the subsequent images seemed to move. From that was developed a horizontally spinning flat ring with holes in it that tricked your eye into seeing each image of a series of pictures individually, and your eye combined them into a moving image.

184 Does anyone really doubt we blew up the Nord Stream pipeline? I've assumed from day 1 it was us.

They benefit, as does India and points south, but the embargos by the EU had already made the pipeline virtually a dead letter. Putin had already warned Germany that after the current contracts ran out, they wouldn't get a similar deal or price again. Russia is now looking away from Europe for trade. There are plans to work a land route by pipeline to China, yes, and directly down the Caspian towards Iran/India overland.

Posted by: DB - for a brighter tomorrow at February 08, 2023 08:38 PM (geLO

Back in the 60s their was the Second Vatican Council. One of the reforms which came out of this was a change to the mass. Latin was replaced with local vernacular, along with a lot of other changes to things such as which way the priests faced during the ceremony, the involvement of laity, the type of music permitted, etc. The goal was to make the mass more accessible to lay folk, and thus help in the Church's mission of evangelization, while retaining the core essence of what the mass was.

The problem is that a lot of radical priests soon used the "spirit of Vatican II" as a way to introduce changes to the liturgy and to their parishes which were as best highly suspect, and at worst outright heresy. There was a backlash in the Church from traditionalists. In 2007, B XVI issued an encyclical, permitting the use of the pre-Vatican II mass under certain circumstances. The masses are very popular, especially with younger, serious, conservative Catholics.

Posted by: Oldcat at February 08, 2023 08:41 PM (eoQWY)

Kinda. It is hard to find. It is the pre-vatican II rite in how it is celebrated. The priest does not face the congregation, he faces the altar and 'leads' them in worship.

FSSP (Fraternal Society of St Peter) is a conservative group of priests who all celebrate the Latin mass (Tridentine is another word for it.) They also do regular masses, but they have been increasing in popularity.

Pope Francis has recently issued another letter which severely restricts the situations where the Latin mass is permitted. This is seen by many conservative Catholics as an attack on them by the more modernist elements within the Church.

It's stunning to see. Truly magnificent and stunning work on display.

"Civility". "The Decline of Civility" because Republicans are Big Meanies.

After they literally threatened then followed through with destroying a woman and her family, then a man and his family. All with young kids. After they cheered their elected opponents being shot and stabbed.

It's not that the Left surprises me or even upsets me anymore, but I just don't have words. This is how they keep people in their bubble. That's why they do it. People see it and go "Oh yeah whatever happened to that good ol 'civility'". I guess all that's left to really say is FRISIZHNJUBS

I don't think it will come to that unless we hit them first. Russia has forseen a lot of the games from the start and not reacted with rashness. The military situation is pretty favorable and likely to be even better - in fact I saw a report from mappers that Ukr information shows a breakout north of Bakhmut might be in progress and compromise that whole area.

Other promised aid looks to be too late and too little, 50 tanks are not going to help in a fortified zone with artillery and air superiority on the other side. NATO and the US look to have stripped all their ammo stocks to zero so an intervention to stop them looks unlikely to help.

But Russia will remember all of these games and take steps.

I figured it might have been done by the Germans themselves because the energy ministry had a backdoor deal to buy natural gas illegally from the Russians via Nordstream 2 that was complete except for the final approval. There were some unexpected Russian energy sector bigwigs that died unexpectedly about then who might have been involved in smuggling too.
However, it could have been shown that everyone else except maybe the Estonians had a reason to blow it.

I figure the Russians are looking at a partition - they already have annexed what they hold now, and will take any part with significant Russian ethic population and add that too. Probably Odessa and a land bridge to Transnistria. Kiev and the parts near NATO can be West Ukraine. The remainder might be a buffer state where Russia controls access to NATO and alliances as a buffer state where Ukr has self rule, but not freedom to rearm. This way Russia does not border NATO there.

I know a few things about the Isle of Skye. Namely that the various independence movements in that region of the Inner Sphere came about because the original government got a particularly bad deal from the nascent Lyran Commonwealth, long before the Lyrans degenerated into a corrupt oligarchy ruled exclusively by the Steiner family. One of the secession movements almost worked, too, but then they went and pissed off some of the top mercs of the 31st century.

314 Document Thief-in-Chief said in a post-SOTU interview by Judy Woodruff he knows the classified documents in question are items from 1974 and from his tenure as V-POTUS. I doubt he said this accidentally. The Junta must be working to get the lapdog media to call this a nothing-burger all day for the next week, then never again report about it.

From a recent Daily Mail article about Joe's post-SOTU interview by Judy Woodruff:

'They've informed me not to speak of this (documents) issue, to anyway prejudice the investigations going on,' Biden answered when asked about the document debacle by Woodruff.

Biden said he voluntarily invited investigators to comb through his documents.

'To the best of my knowledge, the kinds of things they picked up were things from 1974, stray papers. There may be something else I don't know,' he continued.

He admitted, however, that 'what was not done well' was the packing up of his office when he left the vice presidency.

'They didn't do the kind of job that should have been done to go thoroughly through every piece of literature that was there,' the president said.

328 The Latin Mass is really a vehicle for conservative and traditionalist Catholics to voice their displeasure at the modernists in the Church. It's become a symbol of the larger conflict over the direction of the Church on other issues, such as homosexuality, divorce, etc. Additionally, it's a backlash against the boomer priests and lay folk whose mismanagement has caused so many problems for the Church. I've no doubt that it's embarrassing when the regular masses led by a leftwing priest, with a cantor singing while she plays a guitar, are half full at best, and filled with retirees and the middle-aged, while the Latin masses are often packed, and full of young catholic families.

The local parish church did Tridentine mass up to the pandemic. I would go with my neighbors because it is beautiful and I enjoy worshipping with friends. But since the pandemic, no more Latin mass. The neighbors changed churches and now go to a Greek Melkite Catholic church that has mass in Latin and Greek. Said the old parish got too liberal.

Posted by: DB - for a brighter tomorrow at February 08, 2023 08:38 PM (geLO

Generally neither those who prefer it or those who don't care or prefer find it controversial. It's a particular liturgy and liturgy has differed somewhat across time and cultures.

There's a small group that broke with the Catholic Church over it and institutionally this and a potential repeat seems to get disproportionate focus and concern. In other words, some people claim that the Latin mass encourages either schism or a belief that the liturgy itself holds greater meaning than it does. From the historical perspective it's not the first time liturgical changes have been made for the purpose of avoiding misconstruing certain points of theology. But laypeople tend not to have the tightest theology to begin with.

In many times the liturgical language isn't that of the people - Sanskrit, for one. It isn't true that the meaning of the prayer is unknown anyway, the meaning can be given.

The missals I had growing up had the Latin and the translation side by side for times when one was used or the other.

Latin itself is an old vernacular.

But people tend to be very attached to the liturgy as they've known it and liturgical changes tend to generate controversy.

I know this sounds odd, but even us non-latin folks will eventually understand that - 'Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculórum. Amen.'

turns into 'Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.' in your head if you say/hear it often enough.

399 That Neo video reminds me, I should really lose some weight and get a badass longcoat. If we live in a cyberpunk dystopia I should at least try to look the part, yeah?

That's not unusual here in northeast PA. The local affiliates aren't as woke as their respective nationl networks. During hunting season it's normal to see dead animals on the evening news.

402 This has always seemed the only way this ends. China has to broker it. And damn that is official end of US hegemony and admission of Chinese supremacy.

Other way is that the German industry collapses, the Euro collapses because it is based on German economy, the EU can't pay off the various member states, and no one can field anything beyond infantry and strongly worded letters from Brussels to keep all the member states in line. No one can send anything but bad checks to Ukraine, and if any of the member states start fighting, say Turkey and Greece, everyone sits on their hands and starts trying to bum artillery from each other

403 When Ukrainian model companies like ICM and Dora Wings cease producing new tool kits in order to support the war effort I will then believe things are serious.

But they are releasing new tool kits at a steady rate. This month ICM has released in 1/48 scale the gigantic CH-54 Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter.

407 UKR is badass. They've lost +275k soldiers. They're absolutely game.

No other nation in EUR will sustain a fraction of that punishment before surrendering. Not even with US equipment. RUS gets past UKR and it is a horrifying thought. POL as brave as they are won't stand up to RUS industrial artillery.
Posted by: Thesokorus at February 08, 2023 09:44 PM (1ais2)

275k ? The US lost 400k in WW2 in 4 years. Where is that number coming from?

409 @401 - fair point. Not as if we're gun-shy here in Nebraska. But usually the locally-run commercials have that local feel / production value.

This ad looked & felt like it was produced by a national firm. But I suppose these days even the national ads can be narrowly focused to the target audience/demographic.

410 @kindltot

For the record, I am thinking CHN has to broker and enforce the deal btwn RUS and US.

RUS is at war with US. And believes US won't ever stop and is 100% unreliable and incapable of standing by its agreements.

I'm skeptical of any such numbers coming out of a place where reality is whatever the powers that be want it to be, but it's worth noting that this is also the region that gave us the legendary Eastern Front of the said war. Something like 2 million people died in the Battle of Stalingrad.

They don't fight wars the same way we do. Unfortunately, our own powers that be don't seem to understand that.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 08, 2023 09:56 PM (fzPir)

Yes. I think that number is close. The US did not fight any war like in the East. This conflict is more like Eastern Front.

McGregor cited that number as well.

But I understand that US media relying on UKR stats think UKR losses are a fraction of that.

UKR outnumbered prob 9 to 1 in artillery. And outmatched in quality and range. UKR is depleting NATO and US stockpiles. RUS is firing many times that. UKR is holding static positions.

Big Serge is right I think. This is Verdun: a great blood pump.

Posted by: Thesokorus at February 08, 2023 10:10 PM (1ais2)

417 To equal Verdun then both sides need to suffer 70,000 casualties a month.

275,000 is less than half the slaughter of Verdun.

So the analogy fails.
