First-World Problems...

thermo11.jpg

That's a nice modern thermostat with all sorts of neat features that allow me to change the temperature setting automatically. It's great for air conditioning, which is perfect for variable temperatures. There is no reason to keep the house cool when we aren't home, or the downstairs cool when we are asleep upstairs.

It's great! I hardly ever touch it during the cooling season, and just turn it off in September or October.

But...

thermo22.jpg

This is a simple, robust and frankly marvelously designed thermostat that isn't dependent on electronic circuits, and will probably work for the next 50 years without a hiccup. It controls a small radiant heat zone that is isolated from the rest of the house by a door, and has lots of windows so it cools off much more quickly than the rest of the house.

So what's the problem? Well, trying to balance the heating demands of different systems can be an exercise in futility. Four radiant zones, one steam heating zone (on two floors!) conspire to make me scratch my head and say, "F$%k it!"

Oh...for added complexity, radiant responds extremely slowly, so using setbacks is a waste of energy. Steam of course responds very quickly, so that system can be set back, but to what end? It will just end up wasting energy too....I think.

Or maybe not!

Yeah...this is the agony of the First World!

4 I'm thinking this is the most FWP ever b/c townhomes have one thermostat, even if they have multiple levels and a walkout basement - you just learn to freeze in the basement in winter and melt in the bedrooms (aka get fans) in the summer, b/c anything else would probably cost permits and enormous outlays of money in a home where those outlays would never pay off...

7 I could go on for far more than pixie would ever let me about trying to balance the heat in the various first floor living areas of my two zone upstairs/downstairs baseboard system. Sleeping and showering behind the garage can get quite cool, yet that's where the one downstairs thermostat is.
I go upstairs maybe once a month, just to check it's still there.

8 I have had old thermostats, like that Honeywell pictured, that lasted 50 years or more. We put a new system in my house about 5 years ago - a few months ago the system started heating when the thermostat was turned down, and cooling when it was turned up. Called in the tech, and he said "oh thermostat went bad, throw that one away, I'll plug in a new one." Problem solved.

and now I know the life expectancy of modern thermostats.

10 CBD, you hit our biggest pet peeve with "modern" housing. We have one of those newfangled thermostats that you have to program, which was installed against our wishes by the HVAC company that put in our new compressor. It doesn't work. It was say that the house is 74 degrees, but when you adjust the temp because icicles are forming inside, it comes on as 63. We've begged for a "dumb" thermostat. No dice. No HVAC company will put it in.

12 Speaking of outlays and FWPs this week...

I wanted to replace my deck and patio (it's a 1980 original, so it's time). I had a mental price in mind. Then, when I got my bid, I found out in addition to my deck being out of code (not enough support, so see, it is time), my outdoor electrical outlets were also out of code, so no one can replace the deck/patio without also replacing the electrical outlets. So, it's an extra $1500 to my mental project price (which the minute he said it, I knew, b/c it's $500 for a permit and $500 to get an electrician to show up, without work done)...and yes, I am saying yes to a bid that is about $1500 more than I wanted, but it should be done by May, and not affect my heating and AC (b/c it will be done in the nice weather of early spring), so that's a win...and a FWP...

13 Heh. My wife has a different level of hot and cold tolerance than I do, There is a time of year, typically late April to early May here, where it warms up a bit during the day and yet still gets chilly at night. For a couple of weeks we leave both the furnace and the A/C turned on (they are on different thermostats). I know this can't be very energy efficient, but it does wonders for matrimonial harmony.

25 My parents bought the house I now own before I was born. It originally had a floor furnace that kept the living room and part of the hallway warm and a little wall heater in the bathroom so you could keep bathe in the winter without turning blue. When my dad added on to the house, my brother installed central heating but did not change out the old Honeywell thermostat, which worked for 65 years. I had to have it replaced a couple of years ago when it stopped working and the heating guys said they had never seen one and they were illegal to have use because of the mercury switch. They put in a basic digital thermostat and didn't even charge me because of the novelty.

30 Got tired refilling our humidifiers, so we had a humidifer installed in our heating system. It's supposed to be self-adjusting based on outdoor temperature. First few days, humidity was ridiculously high, even though I had it on the lowest setting. Come to find out the guy installed the outdoor temperature sensor in the fresh air pipe about 2 feet from the furnace, and about 15 feet from the nearest exterior wall. Something tells me it's not getting an accurate reading.

We've switched it to manual, for now, until I can move the sensor.

Our electric COOP has confirmed that they can do this with "some" thermostats. They can pretty much throttle our electric via the "smart meter" on the pole outside the house. So we're at their mercy anyway.

My understanding is that the nanobot chip included in the COVID vaccine allows them to send remote commands directly to your brain so that you involuntarily turn your thermostat to the setting they decide, so they don't need to access your Nest device.

Depends on the heater.

I had installed a variable speed heat-pump and had a whiz-bang S30 "smart" thermostat installed.

Three sets of input: User, outside temp/humidity, internet based WX report.

From this, the user can dial in a "Feels Like" temperature and the thermostat will calculate how most efficiently to get there through temperature a/o humidity control.

Once it achieves that temperature, it adjusts the speed of the compressor and blower fans so that the temperature stays constant rather than cycling.

Your problem is exacerbated by the fact that your heating capacity and your heat load is mismatched in both cases.

I'm thinking that radiant area is the most aggravating as this is where the mismatch causes the biggest problems.

I assume you cannot throttle the radiant capacity. One way that things are done commercially is the supply temp is set proportionally to the outdoor temp.

76 That old round Honeywell is a marvel of user interface design.

The one I have was the second one installed with my new compressor. The first one was fancier. It also read about 5 degrees too high.

Asked the guy to come back, he couldn’t adjust the reading by more than a few tenths of a percent. Said he could replace it with a simpler but still fancy one, so we did, and it reads correctly.

I don’t remember what I’m missing, but even the simple one is more than I need. I don’t need any of the features except the ones that let me set at what temp the heat comes on and at what temp the AC comes on. It’s nice to know when the system is using “emergency” (i.e., electric) heat as opposed to the heat pump.

I never use the timed features because I go to sleep at different times every night and wake up when I wake up. When I leave for a trip, I turn it down and/or up to what I feel like leaving the house at (and that old Honeywell would be a lot easier to do this on).

79 In a little, old (fake) cape cod with a basement, there's no balancing heating and cooling even with an efficient gas furnace & AC and a humidifier installed, and also a wood stove in the living room to knock off the chill. (I have friends who also complain of the same with their rambling ranch homes with basements.)

However, we've learned our family members with large, well insulated homes & zoned heating & A/C controlled via deluxe, multi-zone thermostats have faired no better. In fact, expensive mechanical units installed in their attics have failed, sometimes causing major leaks (with the occasional ceilings falling down) & much of their homes' ductwork was through ceilings above where beds would most commonly be placed.

There's no perfect house & no perfect heating/AC sytems it seems. But we're learning that adding the simplest of mini-split systems & inexpensive fans (ceiling &/or portable) are becoming our best bets for controlling heating/cooling and associated costs.

82 Well, not *all* parts of the First World. No real winter and rarely any humidity simplifies things.

Just had heating system replaced (old, long in need of replacement). Some of the guys said they preferred the old analogue round thermostats and installed those in their homes. But the company only uses the whiz-bang new WiFi-enabled ones (which can have that part not enabled or logged in, which is how it will be here most of the time).

Only use for the fancy new features is that there is a remote sensor I can use as the governing thermostat, and that one I put in the office where we spend most of our time at home. So just that small room is heated to X, then system shuts off.

Replaced old AC system with a whole-house fan. This will be fine for 97% of the hot weather here, as humidity is usually low. Temps drop late afternoon, whole-house fan sucks in cooler air/expels warmer air, close up windows in the early AM, house stays pretty nice all day - until it's fan time again. Mean high/low temps this location very few degrees apart, so, heat/cooling not much of a thing.

85 CUDDL DUDS create an extra "under" layer for insulating against cold temperatures both indoors and out ... I buy sets every September (during pre-season BOGO sales) then gift them to all the grandkids at Halloween (instead of candy) ... My favorite style is called "ClimateSmart", which is thin enough to wear under any type of clothing and doesn't bunch up (like the old-fashioned waffle style thermal wear) ... Worn under snowsuits, these provide extra time for the grandkids to play in the snow ... Available at Kohl's, Walmart, JCP and, of course, Cuddlduds-dot-com

86 Got $50 gift card from the idiotic "utility" (huh? why do you have billboards on freeways touting your fire prevention efforts? Your job is to provide power and gas - at about half the prices currently, at most - and maintaining lines is just part of the job, idiots).

Will not participate in their ridiculous Big Brother "we'll manage your AC" (which I don't have anyway) program.

Thermostat will be logged off WiFi in a few weeks, only connected again next "winter" (Dec or Jan depending on weather).

87 Last year I replaced all of my thermostats with Honeywell/Resideo T9 smart thermostats. The top feature I like is that you can get add on sensors for different rooms.

One of the problems we had was that the thermostat is in the master BR, but the temps in the kids rooms would be all over the place. I put secondary sensors in their rooms and now their rooms are more comfortable. The system runs long enough to get a balanced temp across the multiple sensors, not just based on one sensor for an entire floor.

I can control all of the thermostats from my phone, and they are fairly secure. I can configure different schedules to control the temps throughout the day for each zone. I also get alerts on my phone about the system, reminders to change filters, etc. Finally another feature is it runs the fans intermittently to circulate the air. I have noticed since turning that on that the filters are noticably dirtier. 2 years ago we had UV C bulbs added to the systems, and I think it was worth it.

92 We have manual round thermostats that connect to our baseboard heaters that don't even have a temperature. Just a 'comfort range.' The range to maintain a given temperature varies depending on the outside temperature, kind of like an RV fridge.

Kind of a pain. Many years ago, when everyone was at work during the day I thought it would be cool to buy a programmable thermostat and have the temp cooler during the day when the house was empty. The hardware folks said those don't work for baseboard heaters. Didn't seem logical to me, but we just kept the old ones, and now I'm glad of that. They still work mostly. One sometimes gets stuck and has to be turned to off for a bit or it keeps running and the room is over 75.

That "theory" is only valid if you have a heat pump with staged electrical heat strips as secondary/backup.

In that case, bumping the thermostat up when you get home just pulls in the (expensive) strip heaters because they work on a differential temperature that you have just asked for when you bump the thermostat for that 4 or 5 degrees.

A cannon shot would have made more sense but maybe the F22 couldn't get to 64K feet.

152 "Republicans criticize Biden for waiting to shoot down Chinese balloon!" wails Reuters' David Lawder in their usual lefty media "Republican's Pounce" mode.

Obviously, he means Punchy is get richly roasted alive by every American embarrassed by this weak idiocy - but its Reuters, so the story is not about the act, but really all about the left's opponents' reaction to it.

153 We studied (well, discussed) that thermostat in one of the classes I took in management school oh so many years ago (though the concept is -still- quite relevant today).

Honeywell designed, mass-produced and sold that thermostat for 15 - 20 years or so; today, a product like that is virtually obsolete as soon as it hits the market.

154 The vaunted F-22's first kill. A balloon. The kill flag on the airplane's nose will be awesome.

So, the Pentagon is trotting out their own trial balloon trying to say today that Trump started this "letting the Chinese walk on our face" routine with three other balloons during his Presidency...

Except John Ratcliff, Pompeo and former DoD chief Esper immediately shot that balloon down as a complete lie - along with, get this...John Bolton. Oops!

156 It's obviously time to run a simple mass-balance equation - after which - and only after which - you can proudly say ' fuck it'.

157 I'm with you. Forced air system in my house has a single zone. No matter what the thermostat is set at upstairs the best the downstairs gets is 65 F and sometimes is colder. Even with closing and opening registers, adjusting dampers.

House should have been built with at least 2 zones. Nothing can be done with the current system easily because everything is finished except the furnace room so fixing it requires tearing out the finished ceiling.

So my room downstairs requires an electric heater to assist with livability sometimes have to run it in the summer.
