The Weekend Hobby Thread

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades 'The Weekend Hobby Thread'

It appears from the old In-Box here at petmorons at gmail dot com that no one was doing any hobby work these past 2 weeks or didn't want to share.

Let's leave politics at the threshold. Enter the AoS Hobby Thread.

I thought I would share a couple of my recent projects.

IMG_5655.jpg

Wooden oval approximately 5'' wide by 3" high. It is sitting on a 5" easel. Acrylic paint.

My other project, a new dining room clock.

IMG_5656.jpg

Wooden oval measures approximately 14" wide by 11" high. Clock is 2.75" in diameter. Acrylic paint.

Being *29 my memory is not as sharp as it had been. If I remember correctly the last time I dabble in water colors I was in elementary school.

My middle daughter recently took up water colors and she loves it. If you are interested in water colors here are a couple of good videos.

6 Hobby folk!

My usual thing is taking care of my car. Today I brought it to a good tire store for a front-end alignment, and I was right that it needed that. But they had to jump start it! The battery was weak. It was still under AAA warranty, so I drove quickly home and called them, and out they came to replace it. No charge. I have about 6 months left on the original warranty, and then another 36 months of "discount" warranty, you know, where you pay for the part you use.

From now on I'll have the battery checked every 6 months when the oil gets changed.

10 Anybody do archery? I have become fascinated with the archery skills of the Comanches, and also the ancient Turks, Mongols, and the rest. A Swedish guy named Lars Andersen has trained himself to shoot the way these guys did and it is amazing. Search YouTube.

My 16 year old grandson is interested, and might get started making his own bow. There are some good YouTube vids on how to do it using staves cut from 4 to 6 inch trees such as osage orange.

Comanche boys were known to be able to kill birds in the air, coins thrown in the air, and even insects sitting on reeds. Lars Andersen shows this level of skill in his videos.

The Texas rangers in the 1850s were no match for the Comanches until they discovered a shipment of Colt 44 revolvers in the Texas navy warehouses in Galveston, and learned to shoot them well.

14 I've been working on my robot, which is mostly made from parts that I've been making with my 3d printer. It's intended to twirl, so I'm naming it Rosita after Rosasharn. The main holdup has been the gearmotors, which I cannot 3d print, and which I ordered from China. They "shipped" three weeks ago, but they really shipped last Thursday. As soon as I get here, I'll see if I can't get some video.

I've also printed some bookends. I promise I'll send pictures. Just as soon as I take some.

What I've spent most of my energy on in the last couple of weeks is building this computer. I think the video card was bad, which is why I was having trouble. Right now, I'm just waiting and seeing if this new one drops off the bus like the other one did.

19 I was into archery at age 11 with a couple neighborhood guys. We made all our own arrows and hunted cottontail rabbits. We made arrows with what we called fu fu fletching for firing at squirrels and birds up in trees.

The nasty neighbor lady saw me come through the backyard one late afternoon in the snow, holding a bunny full of arrows, and called the cops the next day when I was in school, and told them where I was. She knew they would go to the school.

Cops came and called me to the hall for questioning, never notifying my mom or dad, who got told by the school principal, Sister so and so, after the cops left.

I caught hell for that.

I am trying to sprout some Osage orange seeds in the planters right now. It looks like we will be getting Emerald Ash Borers any year now, and I want some tough wood to work with if all the Ash are going to die off.

Osage is not native to the area, but there are a few hedges left from where one of the early settlers planted Osage around his horse pastures. I figure if it can reproduce for 150 years it is as good as a native tree.

56 Lovely paintings Mis-Hum. I took the back off a recliner today to be able to move it downstairs. I had to resort to a hacksaw to get the last small bolt out. The screw heads on the bolts were invisible even when I tried to use a mirror. Two of the wood bushings had come off and one was loose enough I could just unthread it but that last sucker almost won but I'm a stubborn redheaded redneck. The spacing was tight for using the hacksaw and digging out a grinder was tempting but I didn't want to risk a fire. Now I still need to use an angle grinder to get the rest of the cut bolt out of the bracket thing to eventually get the chair back together but no fire risk now its removed from the chair. It was beer-thirty after wresting with that for a couple of hours.

I played tractor operator today.
I have no idea how you get a John Deere to make a level area in a ditch.
I'm in luck because the ditch will level itself in the next good rainstorm.
I'm not so lucky in that I need to level an area for a bocce ball court, 70x10 feet. Then I'll buy an install pressure treated 6x8s for the sides, and finally 6 tons of 'topping' which will need to be tamped down and level.

Stoning is the better way to sharpen blades like for a planer but I advise the newer waterstone types as the older types get messy because they use oil.

Watergrinding wheels are the best but a PITA to setup and use.

Myself, I have to reset the teeth on some backsaws so having to look for a sawset tool. Most of them are for regular handsaws which I seldom use anymore except for special projects.

Spent $163.00 at Lowe's this morning on my hobby of spending less on electricity. Deep metal box, wire, GFI, copper pipe, sharkbite fittings, etc. If my math skills are still in the range of proficient, this new system, and the two I've already installed, next year I break even, then for the next decade save $1,200 to $3,000 a year.

Unless the socialists keep stealing elections. In which case the return becomes exponentially ( and necessarily, per Barack Obama ) greater every year.

I'm thinking the 'safe bet' is betting on them to keep stealing elections. If 80% of people think the nation is in the wrong direction but elections are decided 51% to 49%, then ''Houston, we have a problem''.

Any wood is worth burning outside if you are dying of exposure.....Grok the caveman told me.

All kidding aside it is a good soft wood, the issue is it gets brittle. If you cure it some it would be better to burn it in a firering outside. When I move from this urban dwelling I plan on using a fire ring when I go home for the outside and having a fireplace assuming they are not outlawed by then for the inside.

They are not kidding about their goals.

101 67 ... Skip,

Those drawing pencil leads you mentioned, are they the thin kind for mechanical pencils? Or are they thicker? You might just need a lead holder. Staedtler and Koh-i-Noor are common (there are many others) and can be found at Michaels, Blick Art Supplies and Amazon. The thicker kinds can vary in diameter and need an appropriate size lead holder.

102 A neat hobby to take up might be backyard metalworking and foundry work. There is a certain power in being able to craft your own axe and hammer. I suspect once we are all involuntarily subscribed to "cave living" we will all get new hobbies.

106 My question is... is Willow worth burning outside? (No wood burning fireplace.)

It dries and burns fine, but not with spectacular heat. It's easy to cut and split, though, so you might consider that a fair trade. (I had two giants go down and was swimming in the stuff for a while).

After sawing the bases off the former, it slipped nicely into the tube of the latter, once a plastic bushing was removed. A few beads with the wire-feed welder, and Voila! a new swivel stool for my workbench.
