Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | "Doctor" Jill Biden is Neither a Doctor, Nor a Jill, Nor a Biden. Discuss. As for Jill Biden not really being a Biden, check out this Benny Johnson video, in which he flashes back to 2020. I completely forgot about this -- Jill Biden's first husband said in 2020 that Jill and Joe were both cheating on their respective spouses with each other. Joe Biden's wife was later killed in a collision in which she was at fault, but Joe keeps claiming she was killed by a "truck driver who drank his lunch." Jill Biden was Joe Biden's babysitter. Also, Jill Biden's husband was Joe's friend and political donor. Good Old Joe decided to have a sexual affair with his wife. It sure sounds like Joe was on the way to divorcing her had she not been tragically killed. About the "doctor" business: The left is trying to cancel Megyn Kelly (again) because she points out that Dr. Jill Biden is not a doctor. But her insistence on being called "doctor" is pathological. Lefties are shrieking in response to her doubling down on refusing to call "Doctor" Jill Biden "doctor." See the comments. Lefties have never heard such an outrage. And also, these "journalists." You semi-remember David Shuster and Roland Martin, right? I mean -- vaguely?
Yes, let's start with the principle that if you have earned an Ed.D., you have a "doctorate." Even if you have a poorly written, inconsequential mess of a position paper that earned you that degree from a school connected to your husband.More on that position paper later. Even accepting that academic, non-medical "doctors" are still doctors, Jill Biden is not even that. She's not a Ph.D. She got an easy-peasy Ed.D. and she didn't even have to write a doctoral thesis. A doctoral thesis is the concluding act of obtaining a Ph.D. -- it's an original piece of academic scholarship that advances the field. Very often, a Ph.D.s doctoral thesis becomes his first published book. So a Ph.D. is required, essentially, to write a publishable book of original scholarship to become a "doctor." Doctoral dissertations are notoriously difficult to write -- or, at least, to finish. Ph.D. candidates will often finish six or seven years of higher learning, but then languish as they're not able to complete their serious, publishable original scholarly research thesis. A lot of Ph.D. candidates wind up calling themselves "ABD" for a number of years, which means "All But Dissertation." So the dissertation is a significant undertaking, and one that some Ph.D. students never even complete. So did "Doctor" Jill write such a doctoral thesis? No, of course not. She wrote, essentially, a short high school term paper, and an error-riddled one at that. Kyle Smith then wrote about "Doctor" Jill's doctorate-worthy high school term paper. She didn't have to write a Ph.D. dissertation, of course, because she was never a Ph.D. candidate. She was seeking the far-less-stringent degree of "Ed.D.," or education doctorate. Insipid writing, typos, faulty language, weak research . . . it's all there. To call Jill Biden's dissertation thin gruel is an insult to gruel. ... Mrs. Biden's only original research consists of interviews with two -- that's right, two -- ex-students and a few colleagues at Delaware Technical Community College, where she used to teach, plus the results of a vacuous questionnaire she wrote that was returned by about 150 people who worked or studied there. Oh, and she also called two nearby community colleges seeking interviews about their retention rates. One of them wouldn't answer the question; the other wouldn't assign anyone to speak to her at all. >b>Telling us about this misadventure serves no academic purpose, though it does fill up four pages of her generously spaced paper. The transcripts of her group chats with campus figures and colleagues take up nearly 30 pages out of 129. The questionnaires eat up another 18 pages. The dissertation, Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting Students' Needs, shimmers with the wan, term-papery feel of middle school, although in defense of today's middle schoolers, they at least know how to use spell-checking software, unlike Mrs. Biden. Her 2006 paper notes that at Delaware Tech, her then-employer, a third of students dissolve into the ether every year, and in order to pad out her micron-thin proposals, none of which have anything to support them except her beliefs and anecdotal evidence (she suggests building a student center and beefing up the "Wellness Center" while increasing counseling and mentoring services), she shovels in piles of drivel. Opinions will differ on which of her efforts is of least value, but a strong contender presents itself at the moment when she reaches over for the course catalog on her desk and quotes at length from page two of its boilerplate introduction ("The College respects and cares for students as individuals and maintains a friendly an open institution which welcomes all students and supports their aspirations for a better life"). She follows up on this meaningless prattle by reiterating it in her own insipid words: "Responding to the current social and economic morés of the new millennium, Delaware Tech's mission has adapted to meet the needs and goals of today's students."If she means "mores" -- which maybe she doesn't, because I've never heard of mores describing economic habits, but exclusively to moral/cultural standards -- then she should know, it is not written with an accent. I don't think that will turn out to be her worst error, unfortunately. Biden's landfill of a paper contains potted histories of things everybody already knows, awkwardly phrased banalities ("Community colleges offer a myriad of support," "As a community college, Delaware Tech mirrors the national profile of a community college," "the unique nature of the classroom allows for a complexity of problems as well"), and childlike repetition ("This reason is one of many reasons that support the need for a campus psychologist.")"Myriad" refers to countable nouns, not uncountable ones. It is defined as a "great number," not a "great amount." You'd say you have a great amount of an uncountable thing, not a great number of it.* You can have a myriad of reasons not to call her "doctor." If you're referring to something uncountable, you could say you have an excess of moral objection to calling her "doctor." "Myriad" is a word she is clearly not comfortable using, and perhaps has never used before, but think it sounds "smart." ... The typos and other miscues begin in the second sentence of Mrs. Biden's introduction ("The needs of the student population are often undeserved [sic], resulting in a student drop-out rate of almost one third") unless you count the table of contents, in which Biden misspells the word "questionnaire." Easing into her subject, she churns through the reader's time with undisguised filler such as block quotations of her then-employer's mission statement, press-release blather ("Today, the community college not only answers the needs of transfer students but has also emerged to address the needs of career education, vocational and technical education, contract training, and community services"), and cutaways to comparable low-impact thoughts on community colleges taken from the very small stack of books she skimmed: "B.S. Hollinshead, president of a junior college in Pennsylvania, wrote that the junior college should be 'a community college meeting community needs.' (Cohen & Brawer, 2003, p. 20)." You don't say. "Dr. George F. Zook, president of the American Council on Education in 1946, echoed Hollinshead's sentiments . . ." and so on.But she's a Real Doctor you guys. The Real Journalists of the media say so. Etymology Fun: By the way, the second definition of myriad gives a specific definition of how great a number it is: A myriad is ten thousand. Did you know that? I sure didn't. From wiktionary.org: I think they mean that you don't have to -- and perhaps shouldn't -- say "a myriad animals," but can/should just say "myriad animals." Can you schedule another dissertation defense? Maybe, I don't know. I bet you they'd make you wait a year or two before doing so, because they don't want unprepared people breezing in figuring, "One of these days I'll just get lucky and pass the defense." They want you to treat this as if it's a Now or Never thing.
======== My dad has spent decades teaching PhD students, and I don't think any of them have failed their dissertations. It's the sort of thing you just don't do. You come in so prepared that you can knock anything back. It also probably helps that the panel is only passingly familiar in what you're trying to do and you have spent a couple of years delving deep into without end. On Jill's insistence on being called "doctor" and the mindless toadies who vehemently defend her, this reminds me of an old Candid Camera episode with Mr. Rogers.
They lured a few celebrities into a hotel stay under the auspices of some conference. They then proceeded to take the celebs to less-than-premiere rooms, where the amenities were revealed to be less and less swanky. Naturally, the celebs got in their eyerolls and loud sighs and "Let me call my manager" quips in. But then they tried it on Fred. He kept saying, "Oh, that's okay." Unfazed by disappointment after disappointment. The coup de grace being no tv in the room. "That's okay. I was just planning on reading anyway." Finally, Peter Funt ended the gag, breaking in on Mr. Rogers, and telling him how exasperated he was trying to ruffle Fred's feathers. Instead of being an occasion for laughs, Fred Rogers's unflappable decency made the show a beautiful teachable moment. Jill's no Mr. Rogers. Customs differ among different universities.
Where I went to undergrad, "Dr." was used for adjuncts with PhDs. Adjuncts with Masters degrees went by "Mr." or "Ms". "Professor" was reserved for tenured faculty, though a lot of students just called everyone "Professor" and usually got away with it. Where I went to grad school, the instructor in charge of a class (but not, say, a TA) was called "Professor", regardless of degree or tenure status. Graduate students were permitted to call tenured faculty by their given names, but undergrads were not. It's never been appropriate for a PhD (much less an EdD) to use "Doctor" in a social setting, only in an academic setting, and not always then. I understand that the University of Chicago is super pissy about this... you're not allowed to call professors by their first name until you, yourself, have a PhD in hand. Few notes:
One, your dissertation advisor is the one that schedules the defense--if your dissertation is not up to snuff for the defense--it is not scheduled. It reflects badly on dissertation advisor to have the defense go badly. Second, even if the defense goes forward--it is usual for revisions to be requested by the committee. Major revisions usually require the committee members to sign off on, minor revisions only require your dissertation advisor. Then, there are the various formatting, submission, and other such requirements in order to complete it. The common guideline though is that everything has to be completed by ten years and a lot of people fail to get their dissertations done either from a poor dissertation committee, malfeasance by the advisor, or simply burnout as a dissertation requires developing the whole package and then writing it up. It is a boring tedious process that simply cannot be reduced to cookbook checklist completion and the process is usually worse when you depart from objective measures such as statistics, etc. into areas like theory. A few of them are really outstandingly good, former ER or ICU nurses with years of real world experience and are damn good providers and if you've got one you are damn lucky, hang on to them. Esoteric fun thing on the 10,000 bit-- I believe 10k was historically considered a poetic synonym for "so many we can't even imagine". It comes up in a number of hymns- Amazing Grace (1779) and Great is Thy Faithfulness (1923) for example. and Matt Redman's contemporary "10,000 Reasons" specifically refers to 10,000 that are found in the older hymns. It makes sense that the word "myriad" that literally means 10k would come to colloquially mean "an uncountable number" if you realize that poetically, that's what 10k meant at one point historically.

5 My dad has spent decades teaching PhD students, and I don't think any of them have failed their dissertations. It's the sort of thing you just don't do.
You come in so prepared that you can knock anything back. It's rare, but I've seen it happen once. The social work candidate came in, presented her work on male vs. female attitudes on work environments. My father was the non-departmental college representative and asked the question, "I see the work and survey on female subjects. Where is the work for the male subjects." Her: "Oh, we didn't survey them." Q: "Why?" Her: "Everyone knows their opinion." At which point the defense was shut down "for lack of scientific rigor" and the candidate failed. Last time my dad was allowed to be a non-departmental representative in the social work area. The candidate did eventually graduate, but she had to rewrite the whole dissertation and defend it again. The whole episode raised a fair bit of quiet mirth and cemented the college of social work's reputation. Posted by: Nerdbert at February 03, 2023 04:15 PM (h9YN/) 211

A dissertation defense is where you must stand before a panel of experts in your field who criticize your work and point out what they believe are errors or faulty conclusions, and you are required to offer cogent rebuttals in real-time. This is an extremely stressful, high-level-cognitive thing, because if you fail to defend your thesis and sound like you're not quite sure what you're talking about, you will fail, and you won't get your Ph.D. Years of research and writing will be in vain.

Senior Russian officials and businessmen like to have doctorates, which are almost invariably plagiarized.
I believe that several people who made a practice of documenting that plagiarism eventually had to flee Russia. This is from a 2017 "dissertation" from the Russian Minister of Culture: In fact, the Russian people, in comparison with foreigners, were real nondrinkers. After all, they were allowed to drink alcohol only a few days a year, during four large church holidays. Foreigners, on the contrary, drank soundly and daily. and I believe that after all the catastrophes that struck Russia in the twentieth century, beginning with First World War I and ending with the “perestroika”, the fact that Russia is still preserved and developing, says that our people have an extra chromosome. In Europe, only MD/DO are referred to as " doctor ". All other PhD level professionals are referred to as " professor ". A very highly respected and esteemed title. In many programs the professors are actually more highly ranked than the doctors, as in Europe and Eastern Europe you can finish with just a 6-year degree as a doctor. Must be some sort of Russian humor in that.
The Minister of Culture dissertation attracted attention, since some faculty actually tried to block it. OTOH: Of 2,034 Dissertation Councils in the country, 382 approved 1,486 falsified dissertation theses. The Council of Moscow State Pedagogical University was the “champion,” it approved 232 dissertations that contained plagiarism, the council of the Russian Academy of State Service that reports to President Vladimir Putin has the second place, approving 182 falsified dissertations, and Tambov State University has the third place, 126 false dissertations. Although some of these 382 councils have already been closed, such councils as the Dissertation Council on Economy of the Ural State Agrarian University continues to approve dissertations with plagiarism (40 dissertations). Oh, and I should remark, I'm actually a engineering Ph.D. so I know the drill. Education graduate schools are completely different beasts.
Something you might not know is that "graduate education" for teachers is a laughingstock. It's a complete grift. School districts bump pay based on degrees, so colleges of education turn into diploma mills. It's also why you see tons of "Ed.D" degrees. How much of a diploma mill is it? Look at the average GPA of most graduate schools in education. I believe that at the last school where I taught the college of education's graduate school GPA was over 3.95, meaning someone, somewhere got an A- once. --------------------- Re balloon. The US had capability to launch a satellite before Sputnik but didn't because they knew Russia would make an international case about their security. The US was taken aback that Russia was able to launch, but also it was a big win for the US since it set the precedent that overflights in space were OK. The same thing might be going on here where not shooting it down is a precedent that makes it harder for the chinese to complain about satellites or high altitude overflights, and you know they will complain as soon as they feel like it and use that as justification for shooting down our satellites. So was mine. That was in the era before dissertations had a couple hundred pages of obligatory crystallographic data appended to them.
---- Mine was somewhat longer. The theory, writing, and pictures of the chip itself was mostly roughly 140 pages. And that was more than 35 years ago, so the theory behind the design needed a *lot* of explanation since neural networks were in their infancy at the time. But the fact that it was meant as a neural network accelerator meant that I was expected to include some code showing how it worked. > Intending no disrespect, but what part of a librarian's job requires original research?
Posted by: Archimedes A standard librarian? None. That's why MLS is the standard terminal degree. But someone needs to figure out new ways to organize information, especially in the modern world. That requires research. Library catalogs alone have changed immensely from what they were when I was a kid. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 03, 2023 04:45 PM (bW8dp) 411

RedState's Nick Arama points out that the media has a rule that they don't refer to even Ph.D's by the honorific "doctor" except in certain cases. But they scrapped that rule because "Doctor" Jill insisted they call her "doctor."
Also: After Obama became president, CNN adopted a style rule that President would be capitalized when referencing the U.S. president, with or without his name. So, when you were referring to His Wonderfulness in second reference, you would write "the President." They dropped the rule when Trump came in. Fellow 29-year-olds may remember an Art Linkletter bit called "Kids Say the Darndest Things". Any American insisting to be called by a title needs to be stripped of their citizenship. It doesn't matter whether their title was earned or not, the demand of using a title transforms it from a professional title to a title of nobility.
MDs, PhDs, EdDs, did not become lords and masters of America. If other people wish to voluntarily refer to them as Doctor out of respect for their education then so be it. If any of them are incensed you do not refer to them by their title it is because they believe they exist above your lowly station and you are not giving them their proper deference. I appreciate it when people call me Dr. "Prolix" (with the caveat that I actually have a PhD in a real field). However, I always immediately tell them to refer to me as "Prolix." ****************** I don't follow. You got the law degree and passed the bar IN ORDER TO be able to legally call yourself...a lawyer. (And if you passed the CA Bar, Bravo!) If someone asks you if you are a lawyer, do you deny it? Does being a CA lawyer embarrass you? Are you a "Lionel Hutt, Legal Torpedo to the Stars"? In any case, as an ex-lawyer I have to say that I have NEVER heard anyone with a J.D. refer to him/herself as a Doctor. Unless he/she/it had an MD or PhD as well. If I were you--I'd be more embarrassed by the SFGOTH thing. That Goth stuff is....so over. And BTW: Try using "Attorney". As in: "I'm a public attorney defending oppressed homeless street people" is *much* classier. Posted by: Noam Sayen at February 03, 2023 05:24 PM (t79HI) 444

Yeah, sorry, but even the basic premise of her argument is wrong.
One third of students do not drop out of community college because "their needs are underserved". Community college is not "COLLEGE", it is a part time post high school education system for kids that may not be ready for college, may not know if college is for them, or is only a part time devotion for them in the first place. All but the "college prep" portion of these reasons lend themselves, INHERENTLY, to drop outs. The only way one third of community college students would NOT drop out every year, would be if you flat out paid them to go. And even then, a sizable number would still drop out. That is the very nature of community college. Posted by: deadrody at February 03, 2023 06:43 PM (/jrmI) 451
