The UK Used a Shadowy Army "Information Warfare" Unit to Spy on Covid Dissenters

They took away people's rights in order to fight "narratives" they didn't like.

Note they're not even patrolling for false facts any longer. No, now they're patrolling for narratives -- interpretations of facts -- that are harmful to The Regime's preferred narrative, The Regime's preferred way to think about things.

And obviously we'll soon find out that the British were monitoring US accounts and relaying that information to the FBI and CIA.

The Daily Mail's Mail on Sunday edition:

Army spied on lockdown critics: Sceptics, including our own Peter Hitchens, long suspected they were under surveillance. Now we've obtained official records that prove they were right all along

Military operatives were part of an operation that targeted politicians and high-profile journalists who raised doubts about the official pandemic response

A shadowy Army unit secretly spied on British citizens who criticised the Government's Covid lockdown policies, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Military operatives in the UK's 'information warfare' brigade were part of a sinister operation that targeted politicians and high-profile journalists who raised doubts about the official pandemic response.

Documents obtained by the civil liberties group Big Brother Watch, and shared exclusively with this newspaper, exposed the work of Government cells such as the Counter Disinformation Unit, based in the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Rapid Response Unit in the Cabinet Office.

But the most secretive is the MoD's 77th Brigade, which deploys 'non-lethal engagement and legitimate non-military levers as a means to adapt behaviours of adversaries'.

According to a whistleblower who worked for the brigade during the lockdowns, the unit strayed far beyond its remit of targeting foreign powers.

They said that British citizens' social media accounts were scrutinised -- a sinister activity that the Ministry of Defence, in public, repeatedly denied doing

Papers show the outfits were tasked with countering 'disinformation' and 'harmful narratives... from purported experts', with civil servants and artificial intelligence deployed to 'scrape' social media for keywords such as 'ventilators' that would have been of interest.

The information was then used to orchestrate Government responses to criticisms of policies such as the stay-at-home order, when police were given power to issue fines and break up gatherings.

It also allowed Ministers to push social media platforms to remove posts and promote Government-approved lines.

The Army whistleblower said: 'It is quite obvious that our activities resulted in the monitoring of the UK population... monitoring the social media posts of ordinary, scared people. These posts did not contain information that was untrue or co-ordinated -- it was simply fear.'

Last night, former Cabinet Minister Mr Davis, a member of the Privy Council, said: 'It's outrageous that people questioning the Government's policies were subject to covert surveillance' -- and questioned the waste of public money.

[Lockdown critic and target of "information warfare" surveillance Peter Hitchens] says: 'The most astonishing thing about the great Covid panic was how many attacks the state managed to make on basic freedoms without anyone much even caring, let alone protesting.

That is very frightening.

The whistleblower from 77 Brigade, which uses both regular and reserve troops, said: 'I developed the impression the Government were more interested in protecting the success of their policies than uncovering any potential foreign interference, and I regret that I was a part of it. Frankly, the work I was doing should never have happened.'

You don't say -- the government using the pretext of Foreign Emmanuel Goldsteins as a pretext to attack its critics and cover up its failings? I've never heard of such a thing!

The British government now admits that yes, it used military "information warfare" units to surveil citizens, in saying those units have "scaled back their work" since the end of the lockdown:

A Downing Street source last night said the units had scaled back their work significantly since the end of the lockdowns.

That's pretty much totalitarian stuff right there. But I'd say with this information now leaked out to the public, there will be some pretty serious repercussions for a lot of these officials. I'd say a good many of them will serve prison time for abuse of power and a great many more will lose their government portions and be stripped of their benefits.

There is a really good chance now that the government will be filled with politicians and officials whose priority it will be to serve the public and respect their civil liberties in an efficient and honorable fashion.

Finally, we will have some justice.

MI-5 and NSA set all the wiretaps on the fiber trunks together, and scale out the panopticon and personnel for it together, and design the monitoring and active and passive measures together, and then deploy it all against *each other's* populations. That way nobody is violating their own laws (except when they do), and the whole thing has the patina of legality.

And then I remember in 2004 or so seeing a few women in burkas pushing baby carriages in my local big blue shithole. And then it started spreading...burkas everywhere, people speaking Arabic, new mosques etc.

At that point I knew we'd already lost.

But here's the big point: They clearly have significant experience monitoring the public to manipulate the discourse toward their outcome.
They have completely corrupted the democrat voice and you must now realize: No major public policy debate of the last 20 years was organic in any way-- it has been completely artificial and curated to the will of the government.

That video of Norman Dodd discussing the 1950s anti-America investigations into foundations like Carnagie mentioned specifically that their minutes mentioned a telegram to President Wilson telling him the war needed to drag out. Quote from the video:

"...(Carnagie determines) is there any means known more effective than war assuming you wish to alter the life of an entire people? And they conclude that no more effective means than war to that end is known to humanity.

Then time passes and we are eventually in a war which would have been World War I and at that time they record on their minutes a shocking report in which they dispatch to President Wilson a telegram cautioning him to see that the war does not end too quickly.

I assume every communication means is tainted, even private conversations if you have a phone or are near a phone when conducting it.

However, the sheer vast amount of communications and bureaucratic inefficiency means that despite all the watchers/algorithms/etc, the background noise overcomes the signals from the data. By trying to capture everything, it overwhelms their analytical ability to actually do something with the data.

You might try looking up crime scene videos that show similar depravity--basically criminals are going to be criminals whether they are wearing a uniform or not.

In part, Hollywood is to blame as it leads to people believing that educational beatings (Rory Miller coined the phrase) do not result in death. More people, last time I checked, died from beatings than from so called assault rifles every year.

Like the CC security system, it will be mostly used for evidence to prosecute crimes after the fact, track cute girls, and see who is drawing lots of money out of their accounts at ATMs in case they want to watch that person more.

AI changed that, of course, within the abilities of AI. I used to work collections with a company that used an expert system to issue garnishments. AI didn't work and we attached a LOT of accounts that had to be paid back, or apologized since we reneged on active repayment agreements. Or garnished the relatives of people with a lot of pull.

True, but I think an element of that was relatively few people even *knowing* that it was happening before it became obvious - and therefore almost unassailable.

This was all done in secret. The censorship was hard to detect at the beginning as COVID was developing. The governments and Big Tech firms getting together to synthetically promote goodthink was difficult to detect at the beginning, too. There was a huge opportunity in terms of frenetic noise that allowed the secret programs to root in during a chaotic period, and that is exactly what the players made sure happened.

++++
That's a slightly bizarre way of thinking about it. I don't know if it's lost in translation (two peoples divided by a common language and all that), but it strikes me as odd.

"Protecting the success of their policies" is a weird way to describe it. It's crushing dissent against their policies. The two things are not the same. No amount of suppression and uniform *belief* in the rightness of a large-scale COVID lockdown could make a COVID lockdown an effective means of disease control. That policy cannot work, no matter how many people you have agreeing that of course it will.

This wasn't about achieving successful policy outcomes, it was about destroying any ability or willingness to dissent with the policymaker's ambitions.

However, local youth assigned ankle monitors haven't been deterred plus they're well organized & very fast on scooters and bikes. The only possibility for control might be urban working, mature &/or elder folks and $ and/or bartering could probably help negate the controls.

I had to unsubscribe from the Law of Self Defense guy. He's Andrew Branca, a lawyer and self-defense expert. Branca was actually defending them saying they were using the amount of force they deemed necessary to get the guy in cuffs (paraphrased heavily.)

I have no idea how he could watch that and defend it. Normally the cops will dogpile someone that's being uncooperative like that. All of the cops stayed on their feet and sort of grabbed at him. That alone tells me they were trying to prolong the encounter.

It was admitted recently that the lady in the federal government that initiated the two week lockdowns did it because no data existed to support the lockdowns, and the two weeks was to find data to support the lockdowns.

The important part of that is to understand that no data existed to support the lockdowns.

Like I've always heard that the NSA was monitoring everything all the time, but if you said keywords like "bomb" or "terror" or "President" then the algorithms picked up your conversation and isolated it for further inspection.

If that is correct, then basically they had what was in effect a "search" function within the vast fields of information. Basically it was searching for tags and meta-tags that matched specific inquiries.

Isn't that basically a search engine?

Nothing is certain as the probability with 'purged' militaries is that a) they are generally incompetent as loyalty is rated higher than ability and b) you have driven out overt opponents and turned the rest into subversives that keep their mouth shut for a paycheck.

So, all can look fine from the outside, but when faced with an existential challenge, the whole organization implodes. Simply put, in any organization large enough to have substantial numbers, it will reflect the divisions in society.

This is a primary motivator for the dream of AI. Capture all the data streams and let the AI separate the signal from the noise. This aspect of AI is where the CCP has a *tremendous* amount of real-world experience and robust methodology. We do, too, I'm sure but I don't know if we're as sophisticated as they are in this area, since Western efforts in AI tend to be in other areas.

Whether the gamble works is another story, but this is a problem they're trying to solve with AI.

Twas always thus. Basically if you view the state as having a large magnifying glass and yourself as an ant, the state can burn any 'ant' that comes to their attention. However, it would take until the end of days to eliminate a fire ant mound of any size using this technique.

All governments use coercion to some extent but coercion has a price that rises for each level of coercion that a government uses and at a certain point risks system stability to go further.

Stalin himself learned that hard fact. Even a despot gets sick or has to sleep--as you pile on the outrages--you lose the ability to widely influence society other than self preservation.

This is essentially the Calculation Problem that is central to Austrian Economics criticism of Socialism. It is impossible to get enough information together and reason from it fast enough to effectively manage a centralzed economy. It can be done poorly, with great inefficiency, and poverty for everyone, because the individual needs and wants are too diverse - and individual.

I am sure they will try, but it will just turn an entire society into a prison, since it has to do so to keep individuals acting in their own interest, but what we draw from large prisons is that there is mostly guards on the walls controlling access in and out, and gangs maintain order inside.

310 241 Am I wrong to assume that basically the whole interment was created by government and that google is basically the stylized version of the software that the NSA used to monitor American communications prior to the majority of communication being carried out digitally?

Like I've always heard that the NSA was monitoring everything all the time, but if you said keywords like "bomb" or "terror" or "President" then the algorithms picked up your conversation and isolated it for further inspection.

If that is correct, then basically they had what was in effect a "search" function within the vast fields of information. Basically it was searching for tags and meta-tags that matched specific inquiries.

Isn't that basically a search engine?

375 I thought the internet began as a DARPA project aimed at creating a survivable communications system for post-nuclear war conditions. An ocean of money was quietly invested in making the old twisted copper wire network "hard" for survivability purposes (thus the way over-built "central office" buildings that used to house the switching gear, generally built to withstand 5PSI over-pressures).

Thought the internet (i.e., a separate, data-based network) was intended to be a survivable alternative or back-up.
