The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The Law Of Unintended Consequences is always operative. Of course you can see it in a slightly different way, as explained in a Yiddish aphorism: "Man plans and God laughs." But there is more to this than the unforseen results of new technology used in novel ways. This is one more egregious example of the hubris and stupidity of our so-called "elites."

What happened to those decade-long environmental studies that seem to be required before we build a 20 foot foot bridge over a swamp in the Meadowlands? What about the survival of the North Atlantic Sargassum flea? All cast aside so that our obviously idiotic government planners can worship at the altar of Gaia and virtue signal their commitment to the Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse.

Never mind that the environmental impact of these monstrous, ugly, fragile and polluting machines is completely unknown. Vibration? Electromagnetic fields? Sound? Changes in currents? How do these impact the oceans?

They don't know, and they don't care. Graft, virtue signalling, political correctness, wokism, naked vote buying...you name the leftist neurosis and it is operative in this massive boondoggle.

Dead humpback whale found washed ashore in New York amid uptick in endangered whale deaths along East Coast

Nine whales -- including two sperm whales and seven humpback whales -- have been found dead off the coasts of four East Coast states in less than two months, according to federal environmental officials. The discovery of the whales, five of which were beached in New Jersey, sparked calls from environmentalists to halt offshore wind development until more information was known about their deaths.

Of course the assumption that the deaths of these whales* are caused by the wind farms is nonsense, just as the assumption that there has been an increase in whale deaths is also nonsense. There are multiple other explanations for the appearance of these dead whales on the coast, and it could be as benign as the concomitant increase in their population! Yup...humpback whale populations have been increasing.

But the correlation between an increase in whale carcasses on our beaches and the wind farms is just too delicious to discard because of logic and rational analysis of the issue. It is my fervent desire that the rabid environmentalists, who seem to crawl out from under their rocks whenever some obviously benign project is proposed, will lose their minds over this one.

I want MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) to be reconstituted! Does anyone remember the anti-nuclear power movement? Let's have Jackson Browne back for an encore! And maybe Graham Nash can blabber on about giant sponges and Bruce Springsteen can yell at us for a set or two.

Seriously...there is so little research on the long-term effects of these machines that building them in the oceans off our coasts is profoundly irresponsible. We simply don't know what will happen, and until there is enough data to make an informed decision about the net effects it makes much more sense to go slowly and build small pilot projects that will test for environmental safety and economic viability.

Or...you know...open Shoreham and reopen Indian Point...two nuclear power plants that could generate far more electricity than all of these wind farms combined.

*As for disposal? Well...duh!

The RNC can't control shit.

It's going to be Trump vs. the host of establishment figures, each getting their week in the sun as the "Trump killer" where they raise tens of millions of dollars each, getting a slight bump in the mid-2023 polls that gets them within 35 points of Trump, before fading and another one takes the mantle for a week.

At least half of the "Trump killers" won't even make it to Iowa, and the rest will be so easily destroyed through the first three races that he'll be the de facto nominee by SC. De Santis won't even run because he'll be fighting in the same political space as Trump, and Trump won't be nearly weak enough to justify the risk.

It's odd how the environmentalists never talk about the real reason for the catastrophic decline in whale populations. It wasn't Japanese whalers or American industry or sportsmen.

It was the Soviets. They had absurd, stupid and pointless quotas on whale production in the five-year plans all the way into the early 70s IIRC and they achieved their quotas. They also pointlessly hunted whales nearly to extinction to accomplish it and tick the boxes in Moscow.

184 >>When our Coast Guard cutters used to travel off the North Fork of Long Island near the sub base at Groton CT, we knew that when we would see Right whales that we would soon get a call from a submarine (departing or arriving) requesting our intentions. The subs would use their sonar upon entering or departing and it would drive the whales to the surface.

The other day I saw 3 tugs working to maneuver a barge carrying the tail end of a new sub onto the Electric Boat facility at Quonset Point. Since the closed the Navy base there they've turned it into a business park and EB built a huge sub building facility there.

Well, a partial sub building facility. They build most of the hulls down in Groton and then move them to Quonset piece by piece for a lot of the electrical work. Those things are massive.

186 Nope. It's not the potential harm. It's the absence of any rationale for these ridiculous "alternative" energy sources. It's not the infeasibility, it's the lack of a rationale.

And nuclear is probably only a part of the "answer" (there is no question to answer). Coal and gas are easily the better choice for most of CONUS.

So long as the baseless AGW nonsense is stipulated, and not confronted and rejected, it will be an endless, impoverishing, freedom-destroying over which non-cost effective irrational energy generation method to adopt.

Speaking of Whataburger -

The movie "Vengeance"(now streaming), which I would recommend in general, has a NYC guy going to West Texas for a funeral.

There's a lot of fun regarding cultural differences. Some in ways you would not expect, others in stupid stereotype eye-rollers. YMMV.

Anyway...the script uses Whataburger in a few ways, but, but ,but their main Whataburger joke is just a "Texans are just dumb hicks" joke.

When asked why Whataburger is so popular and why it's considered the best, every single Texan replies "cuz it's there".

No research at all was done on this bit of Texass lore. And is a HUGE false note in the middle of the Movie.

Probably every single person you'd ask why you love Whataburger in Texas could give you a logical considered explanation, with examples, personal or otherwise, if not an actual exegesis on the topic of Whataburger.

What you absolutely would not hear is - "Because it's there."

Character and Script Fail! Esp because Whataburger kinda sorta provides the main clue that solves the mystery.

So, we have those ugly wind turbines springing up everywhere killing millions of bats and thousands of birds.

And solar panels that produce energy less than half the year in western wa. Has anyone seen when happens to the earth UNDER a solar panel?

And what happened to the floating solar farm in the Atlantic? Did it sink already?

I had that on a multi-party call once. Customer was southern (not sure where) and had a thick accent. The other vendor was a king-sized dick from Boston who as really talking down to the customer.

Eventually, the customer had enough. He said, "I may talk slow but that doesn't mean I think slow. You can speak to me with respect or I can find another vendor."

Mr. Boston found someone else to take over, and that was the right move. He lost the customer's confidence and willingness to help.

How did Trump, by the skin of his teeth, win in 2016? What were the primary drivers of his historic incumbent's increased votes in 2020? On these policies, I am unaware of any meaningful daylight between them (on some, understandably, DeSantis has little profile, having been a congresscritter and now governor).

That's the essential paradox and weakness of a DeSantis run in 2024. "Oh, I'll do everything the same on the big issues that he did and would, but, but ..... well, .....". Huh? Please ID what campaign strategerists call "differentiation" issues between Trump and Heavy D. I know of no significant ones. Personality "issues"? Good luck winning an already long-shot general if you manage to take out Trump on personality issues.

This is a classwide phenomenon in the younger parts of the judiciary. People who occasionally smoked weed in college think marijuana should not be taken seriously in criminal and child welfare cases. You know, because the drug habits of habitual criminals and child abusers are just like those of college kids and with the same consequences. That fact that marijuana is the drug of choice for a lot of black folks plays into it too.

Disagree completely. At this point what Trump is engaged in is fratricide- and that doesn't serve anyone but his ego. Trump was good with actions, terrible with expressing direction and objectives. He was also terrible at trusting people and truly accomplishing all that was possible because of the distractions- which were purposefully consuming Trump's time. That's not what people are any or need in our country. Not will this garbage win an election. That's not to say I trust DeSantis either. I would like to see him held up to true scrutiny, not this rock throwing character assassination juvenile crap that Trump is engaging in. The only serious impediment to Democrats getting power as they want it is the primary schedule. Having SC early and CA late is a killer because SC is actually pretty secure in its vote mechanics, and it does end up reflecting the will of the Democrat electorate (hence, Biden wiping the floor with the coterie of woke nutjobs in 2020 by more than 30 points).

I expect that after 2024, when Biden wins the Democrat primary despite the different leftist factions throwing everything at it to win, there will be a renewed effort to revamp the primary schedule and push the cheating states up more.
