  • Now that AMD's low-power Ryzen 7900 (non-X) is out there's never been a better time to build a high-end PC except what's that Lassie the 7900X is faster, cheaper, and comes bundled with 32GB of DDR5 RAM if you buy it from Microcenter? (WCCFTech)

    Oh.

The 7900X runs at 170W while the 7900 (without the X) runs at 65W. Despite using 60% less power, it's only 6% slower on multi-threaded tasks and 3% slower single-threaded.

On the other hand you can configure the 7900X to a 65W TDP, which turns it into a 7900.

On the seventeenth hand you can configure the 7900 to run in PBO mode which turns it into a 7900X.

On the forty-eighth hand, the 7900X comes with 32GB of free RAM. On the seventy-second hand, the 7900 comes with a fairly good CPU cooler, which is an extra cost on the 7900X. On the three-hundred and twenty-eighth hand, that cooler is only fairly good and won't suffice if you enable PBO to turn your 7900 into a 7900X anyway.

Just buy whatever. It's a good chip.

Someone Is Wrong on the Internet Video of the Day

The quickest way to uncover a deeply buried fact is to be confidently wrong about the subject in as embarrassing a manner as possible.

7 Howdy all, Just have to say that mishums joke about the grocery store had me laughing in tears. Everyone needs to laugh that hard sometimes, and in my life Ace of spades is what makes me really laugh.

Just checked on the snowfall, looks like we just got about 5" on top of a couple of inches we had just before that, most snow I've seen on the ground here in 2 years.

10 As a child I played a game called dungeon hack. The most famous version (after my time) was called Mines of Moria. The main character is an ampersand and every other command is a hotkey that I had to figure out.

I play Crypt of the Necrodancer when I want to scratch that itch now.

My graphics card is busted (I hope that's all it is) and I will down-grade today to the previous GTX970 that I saved in a box.

12 In my case, the ONT reminds me of me and my mama getting horrified at the shenanigans my dad and sister would get up to in department stores.

Dad's favorite was the one with clothes displays where you prop half the hangers so they're balanced on the very tip of the hooky loopy hangy bit, so that the first person who walks up to browse that rack makes half the display fall to the ground.

Kind gives the game away when a man and his little daughter start cackling maniacally from across the store....

33 The idea of a permanent World Map is a pretty recent innovation. This idea that "These are the countries of the world, and no one must ever try to change or reshape them or else they are Evil. Unless we like them. In which case the other guys are evil" .... it's not natural. It's not how humans work. It doesn't make the world more peaceful. It just displaces civilizational conflict into uglier, less noble formats.

49 Decades Channel is running a Honey West marathon -- Anne Francis. She was lovely, and projected a palpable intelligence in all her roles too. But the show was only 30 minutes long. Not much time for plot and character development in that space. Though eps I've seen moved fast and did some neat plot switches, like clever short stories. The one I'm looking at has Joe Don Baker, long before Walking Tall.

The irony is that HW laid a blueprint for "strong" women in action-adventure stories -- the sort of thing The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. needed to do the next year, and might have if it hadn't been infected with the "camp" virus.

55 I honestly don't see any good reason for nVidia to do a Lovelace Titan. It just eats into their data center line where they make more money, and it is hard to think of any non-professional workload that might be able to use it. Even in high end VR the 4090 is overkill.

58 Any chance of fixing the comment links? Taking this post as an example, on the main page the link is

https://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=402941

If I click post link (in this case, the link under "4:00 AM"), then there is an "Access Comments" link to

http://minx.cc/?post=402941

which doesn't work - "minx.cc took too long to respond".

This make links from other places annoying. E.g. this post would be linked as

https://ace.mu.nu/archives/402941.php

but if you go there, you can't read the comments for this reason. You have to go back to the main page and search for the post.
