38 22 For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, gup to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

56 This work is showing three different scenes from the story at once. Salome, in white, dances in the center. The white is an interesting and ironic choice, since her dance was seductive and Herod was twitterpated. The beheading happens off canvas to the left but is placed in the platter. On the right, it is presented to Herodias.

64 A little veiled Strauss humor:

In the 50's, a major production had a John The Baptist sung by an absolute terror divo/mivo, who was so vain that he stuffed his nostrils and ears with cotton up until the performance began, to protect himself from others' germs. Everybody hated him.

In the Aubrey Beardsley stage design, John's severed head is presented on a platter from a well. When the awkward moment was reached, a hand raised the platter, and when the cover was taken off, the fake head had cotton in the nostrils. It cracked up the whole company and they had to ring down the curtain until decorum could be recovered.

65 Lippi is trying to be an Impressionist at this point. H he just didn't know he was foreshadowing! Salome's model is doing a racy dance, at least according to polite society. (Gypsy dancers NOT welcome in Italian renaissance courts.) Herod is definitely checking out her legs.

68 This looks like Renaissance art. (Check; 1460-1464.) It all seems rather stiffly posed; the people are dressed all in Renaissance Italian fashions. Which was the style for painters then, I guess, to use the trappings of the present even when painting events from the far past.

Salome is either just beginning her dance, or Lippi just didn't want to paint a nearly nude female figure (or was not allowed to, maybe). And as someone said above, there isn't much food to be seen at this feast.

70 It also looks like Lippi changed things in the middle ground left. He seems to have erased or painted over a group that is being visited by an angel. John's mourning followers? The work looks cleaned so I wonder if the cleaning revealed the removed figures. Wouldn't be the first time that happened when cleaning a fresco.

Yeah, it's like when we hear about the wretched excess of our elite. Ho-hum, another day ending in "y," another one of our ruling class is living in sin a forbidden Levirate marriage, watching his young stepdaughter do a lascivious dance for him, and don't you dare speak up about it, or else.

History rhymes and stuff.

91 It's interesting that the role of Salome seems to be connected with older women trying to connect with their youth.

There's the real world example of the 1923 silent film where Saloime was played by Alla Nazimova when she was 44 years old. And, of course, there's the example of Gloria Swanson's character planning on a movie comeback by getting herself in a version of the story (that she brings William Holden on to rewrite) in Sunset Blvd.

It was always my understanding that Salome was supposed to be in her teens.

108 Salome is either just beginning her dance, or Lippi just didn't want to paint a nearly nude female figure (or was not allowed to, maybe). And as someone said above, there isn't much food to be seen at this feast.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 31, 2023 09:44 AM (J2vNu)

Lippi was a priest, and nudity in art was still rare this early in the Renaissance, Donatello notwithstanding. All that was needed to get the story across was a pretty dancing girl, a king, a feast, and a head on a platter. Viewers filled in (or removed *wink*) the rest.

113 Herod Antipas divorced his Nabataean wife, the daughter of Aretas IV, king of the desert kingdom adjoining his own, to marry Herodias, formerly the wife of his half brother. The marriage offended his former father-in-law and alienated his Jewish subjects.

Herod also invented antipasta, but the dish known as Herod Antipasta was eclipsed by the ever-popular Caesar Salad as a result of Roman hegemony.

I think Juliet is supposed to be about 14, and Romeo a bit older, maybe 16.

I mean, the characters have that emotional maturity and are easily led and manipulated by the friar (the true antagonist in the story).

It's interesting that the role of Salome seems to be connected with older women trying to connect with their youth.

-----

Well, the story lends itself to that. Herodias was an aging whore, furious at JtB for condemning her gross marriage toHunter Herod Antipas. But she used her young daughter's feminine wiles, not her own, to put that head on that platter. Probable because Herod had coke-dick and couldn't get it up for an old lady like her anymore.

A new documentary about Brett Kavanaugh the rapist! The film’s existence was a surprise, with the Sundance festival only revealing it on opening night.

If there’s a smoking gun in Liman’s film, it’s a voice message left on the FBI tip line from Max Stier, the president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, who attended Yale with Kavanagh and Ramirez.

In the previously unheard recording, Stier says classmates told him not just that Kavanaugh stuck his penis in Ramirez’s face, but that afterward, Kavanaugh went to the bathroom to make himself erect before allegedly returning to assault her again, hoping to amuse an audience of mutual friends. In the film, Ramirez says she’d suppressed the memory so deeply she couldn’t recall this second incident, even when Farrow explicitly asked her about it.

In the film, Ramirez says she’d suppressed the memory so deeply she couldn’t recall this second incident, even when Farrow explicitly asked her about it.

MGM's executives saw the 8 hour cut, but it was never intended for actual distribution.

von Stroheim's plan was, apparently, to cut it down to about 5-6 hours and release it in two parts where people came two nights in a row to the theater. Scoff at the idea, but this was the mid-20s and feature films were only about 10 years old. No one really knew the limits of a feature film, and von Stroheim was pushing boundaries that might have worked (probably not).

Executives worked with him until he became unreasonable in their eyes, and they cut it down to 2. There's a reconstructed cut that's 4 hours long, but the extra two hours are all built off of still images of cut scenes that von Stroheim had kept for decades.

Zeffirellis's version was cutting edge when it came out. I do believe it was the first English-language version to use teens for the leads, and play up the runaway feelings involved. I've told my friends that the play is similar to Shakespeare's comedies of manners for the first half of the story. It's not until Romeo and his pals run into Tybalt and the feud personified takes the stage that it becomes a tragedy, and the feelings involved race things along to the climax. Both Zeferelli and Luhrman get that transition and the roller coaster that follows. "You are all punish-ed!"

I really liked a lot of the OT narrative stories as a kid because of the action, miracles, underdog heroes wining with the help of The Man Upstairs, and clearly depicted morals which a child could follow. Then as an adult I came back to them with a renewed understanding and appreciation that human behavior hasn't changed a bit in three millennia. And then realized that a lot of people in D.C. wouldn't survive a comparison to Ahab & Jezebel regarding Naboth's Vineyard.

Queen Kelly.

Von Stroheim had Swanson's costar spit tobacco juice on her during a take. Von Stroheim thought it was hilarious. Swanson did not. As producer, she fired Stroheim pretty much on the spot, hired another director to film a quick ending that cut out about half an hour of footage, and called it a day.

Do not under any circumstances order an "Irish Car Bomb" drink when in Ireland."

I am not kidding. They called it out specifically.

I always listen to the advice of the locals when I travel for work. I once went to a place in Connecticut to visit a customer and booked a nearby hotel. The customer asked me where I was staying and I told him. He asked me why. I answered, "It's walking distance to your offices, so I won't have to rent a car."

He said, "Sort of. It's walking distance if you live through it. Stay further out, rent a car and park in our secure lot. Don't walk through this part of town."

I appreciated the warning, and changed my reservation.

So, they do it in simulation until they determine a good candidate for real testing, at which time they engage in gain-of-function. And this is the defense?

Or am I misreading the statement? Because this sounds a lot like, "we use supercomputers to simulate atomic explosions so we can minimize the number of nukes we actually have to set off." Fair enough, and probably a good idea to do they theoretical work in simulation - but it doesn't mean "we don't set off nukes."

The title makes no sense in the release version. I sort of makes sense in the restored version since it ends with a series of title cards that summarize the final 15 hours of the film in about 30 seconds.

Among all the others ,Hunter had affairs with his sister in law, her sister, his niece, random strippers, but now his laptop yields up evidence he forced four employees to have sex with him, which he filmed of course.

I just know the von Stroheim stuff because I just went through his directed work, and even then it's a bit thin. I've read very little about the period, so behind the scenes stuff is scant.

My knowledge is more generalized across the whole century. I also have serious deficiencies in terms of knowledge of actors. I largely don't care about them, so I don't pursue any information on them.
