Weekend Hobby, Craft and Bodging Thread

Greetings gang. Snowy here in Wisconsin and so it's perfect weather for staying indoors and getting creative. I know I promised to have snaps of the bookcase but, alas, delays and more delays. Maybe next time. Remember, mañana doesn't mean tomorrow. It just means not now!

What are you all working on, have planned or just daydreaming about?

4 Finished my Bolt Action WWII 28mm miniature British Airborne army and have embarked on yet another army. this time I am staying British and doing Canadian Army. that let's me use the same tanks and vehicles between the two armies.

I found a killer deal on Amazon to kick start the Army. Granted they are plastic figures and I generally do not like them, but at that price point I made an exception and bought two of these starter army boxes, they will give me everything I need.

15 I have too many hobbies.

Main activities right now are working on re-backing and repairing a quilt Inspector"s grandma made for him when he was 14. She embroidered scenes from his childhood and little facts about his family's lives into 12 squares of a 25 patch twin size piece. I'm using a well washed twin sheet to replace the original backing that had fallen apart. The fabric is fragile, so even repaired it will have to be treated gently, but this way it can at least be laid on a bed.

The amazing thing is that his grandma made a quilt like that for each of her grandkids and they are individualized.

18 Other thing I'm working on is combining the How to Host a Dungeon world creator with RPGMaker VX Ace to make a playable game. It's called So My Sheep May Safely Graze and the point is to find/rescue Fred the Shepherd's sheep who have wandered into dungeon through a recently opened sinkhole. In the process the player finds out about the history of the area.

19 Catching up on continuing to organize the baseball card collection. And having made several purchases this week, I have more coming, because there's no one here to tell me not to.

Meanwhile, the guitar I bought about a month ago sits here, untouched for about three weeks.

There is such a thing as having too much time on one's hands.

20 Back in the early '70s, my brother built what was we think the first geodesic house in Oklahoma. 30-foot diameter 3/4 dome. Remarkably roomy three-bedroom two bath.

The stories I could tell about its construction and deterioration! Just one:

Woody was one of those do-everything old hands who had worked for our grandfather and father. He was the main builder, fitting standard windows and doors and walls into that wacky shape, and did a great job.

Came time to spray-insulate the interior. Woody told my brother, make sure that the foam is as deep as the wood frame. Then Woody drove off the ranch to town. Brother wrote a check to the insulators, and drove off the ranch to town. The insulators, you guessed it, immediately packed up, and drove off the ranch to town. The place never did get finished right.

Geodesics like to move and "breathe." The fiberglass outer coating cracked and leaked. Nothing got repaired. Brother moved away and just left it. MiladyJo and I went to close the place out. Meat left in the freezer with no electricity. Dad's great old roll-top desk right under a major leak, destroyed, and full of wasps' nests.

Coat the whole thing in concrete!

21 That Landscape Artist of the Year series, shown on the local PBS station, is both interesting and frustrating. It's interesting in that it shows many different styles of art: oil, pen and ink, linocut, collage, pastel, etc. Frustrating in that it doesn't deal with the techniques in much detail. Also, the judges are such modern Euro types. A painting must not be too 'twee' or pleasant or pretty. Every time they use twee as a negative, I want to see someone punch them in the mouth. Ninety percent of the time I don't agree with their choices.

There's a companion series, Portrait Artist of the Year. I haven't seen it yet.

What a great thing to have! I have a couple of quilts that I helped my grandmother finish shortly before she passed. The fabric is very old, though, and fragile, so I just store them in the closet. Dogs would destroy them.

I had to replace the kitchen faucet this morning. Old one had a pinhole leak on top of the aerator. I could have paid a plumber, but then I would have been charged for the time it would have taken him to find the set screw that wasn't included with the new faucet.

35 The flip book is a great idea, Polliwog.

My stepmother recently made a quilt for my sister, using our grandmother's handkerchiefs. It is so pretty. She made me one using fabric that belonged to my late sister. My stepmother makes beautiful quilts, and puts so much thought into what is meaningful to the recipient.

Any thoughts about how to attach the photos from behind after I clean the excess paint and repaint them? Foam attached to particle board?

I spent nearly 30 years ignoring my garage. After six weeks of work I've now achieved a level of cleanliness that my wife recently told a neighbor she'd consider 'moving into it". I'm thinking art studio eventually. With a nice ceramic tile floor and suitable lighting for painting. Wallboard over the existing cinder block walls.

Unfortunately it's gotta go to position 99 of my 100 'things I gotta do' list. Two bathroom makeovers from 20 years ago are unfortunately showing their age.

45 There's one unexpected aspect to the drawing hobby: I notice possible things to draw EVERYWHERE. A print on the wall of a doctor's waiting room, a scene on a Christmas card, the world's oldest olive tree pictured on today's gardening thread (especially enlarging the trunk), sunlight hitting highly figured wood at just the right angle, and so on and so forth. I can get lost trying to figure out how I could attempt the image in graphite or pastel or colored pencil or charcoal or Conte crayon. (This doesn't mean a good image, just the attempt.)

I never expected this aspect of the hobby to be so strong. It's cool but strange.

46 All, a query. I want a nice case to hold some of my CD collection (IMHO, if you don't own the physical medium, you don't own the music). However, the space for it is of odd dimensions, and I'd like to have it of solid wood rather than that particle-board crap. So I'm thinking perhaps doing it myself - or better yet, assembling a kit. I'm up to assembling and finishing a wooden case, but I wouldn't want to attempt to cut the pieces myself (I don't have a power saw - being an amateur musician, I don't want to risk an accident that would end my playing). Could anyone recommend a place where I could get such a kit? I've looked around the intertubes, but nothing leaps up at me.

Thanks much!

Been working on a couple of antique television receivers, one is the classic RCA 630 from 1946, the first post war receiver commercially available in mass quantity after the war. Another is a Motorola 7" set. Finished my 1959 RCA CTC-9 color TV a few months ago, but need to revisit a problem in the vertical deflection circuit.

Tinkering with electronics as a kid led me to a lifelong career in the field. My childhood hobby became my vocation for over 53 years, 34 as a television broadcast engineer. And I haven't stopped "tinkering". People ask me after I retired if I was bored. Never! Too many hobbies! LOL!! Add my model train layout to the mix and working on my 57 Chevy keeps me busy, for sure. A man's got to have a hobby.

82 My life is sorta a hobby/experiment. ha. I have so many unfinished projects, and yet feel relatively secure for zombie times. ... But the refinements of some of those videos of trains and geodesic domes ... WOW.

My thinking is to have "hobbies" that also support sovereignty, and perhaps survival. (sawmill, old tractors that serve a purpose, guns of course, etc.) But the arts are for the more civilized society, and many of these hobbies are art. Awesome stuff.

86 I learned something this week. I had a rec room in the basement painted blood red. We called it the 'murder' room - yeah, that red. Anyway, in preparation for the final new color the woman at Sherwin Williams said she would tint the primer with just a bit of black and that would help to knock down that red. She was right. Completely covered it and now it is ready for the final coat.

124 Wallpaper is pretty easy to take down. Hot water will do it. I love yellow kitchens! And we had nautical wallpaper trim at the old house.

I have to figure out what to do with the kitchen floor. It's that OMB stuff with some vinyl tiles slapped on it. Needs something to smooth it out. And the bathroom is awful, meaning they hacked a space for the new tub/shower and just left it like that. You can see the studs and exterior siding. And there's a window they just put tar paper over.

125 And of course I got the satin finish, not the flat, for the small amount of paint I need to touch up around a new thermostat and paint over the marks on the walls from the furnace replacement. And I *think* the walls were flat, if only because the other colors used for bedrooms (of which, of course, there are remnants and labels) were flat, apparently. Swiss coffee color, so standard neutral off-white stuff. I guess if it doesn't look right I'll just use it as primer in the one room still to be painted, and go get the flat version.

As with most painting and refinishing, the prep will be 80% of the work - in this case disassembling the sucker (has steel legs and framework, guy I bought it from assembled it in about 10 minutes, so if I get some sockets for the power drill, maybe that won't be much work).

Just wondering about how best to strip and refinish. What to use. I assume it's got some kind of polyurethane finish on it now. Would want the heaviest-duty finish I can, to prolong the life of a "nice" surface as much as possible, and the bench sees lots of work.

When we moved we left a house that was done, as in everything was updated, painted, fixed, nice . . . and we got a house that was lived in by one family for 17 years but they lived in it like it was a rental. And every thing they did to "fix" anything was done backwards, upside down, inside out and ugly. We are over 29 and not going to spend the rest of our lives fixing up a house. So we are fixing, repairing, painting, replacing as we need to and have extra money. And I am learning that sometimes good enough is . . . good enough. We are thankful to have the house, though.

200 Good advice, AZ deplorable and Oldcat. Driving iron especially, and starting on 9-hole courses (or just doing 9s where courses allow that). And work on putting and short game (including some lessons).

Thing is, NW weather isn't conducive to year-round golf, like here (or much of AZ). So, a seasonal thing.

One nice trend is that courses, with the serious drop in rounds played over the last 10 years, are getting more flexible and allowing 9-only where they wouldn't before. And creating "memberships" that offer serious discounts on play and range balls. Pondering one such very close to me right now.

227 So racing is a hobby, and watching racing is a hobby for a bunch more people. I tuned in to the 24 hour race at Daytona just now and they're pushing electric vehicles HARD. Ads left and right for Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, etc. about EV this and EV that and how great EVs are. Funny thing is that none of the cars in the 24 race are EVs. It's not hard to figure out why.

BUT, and here's the interesting part, you can see the Overton window being moved this year in the race. There are hybrid cars that have 920 megajoules of energy that they're allowed to use per-stint. It doesn't matter if there is still gas in the tank. You can't use it. You have 920 megajoules. You have X amount of "energy", except not energy in gas, or energy in your batteries if you have any energy there. Energy we approve of. Once you use it you are penalized.

"And replenishing that energy bank is a matter of time, not fuel flow."

It's not hard to see where this is going.

---

I was good friends with a pro player until he passed a few years ago. One of the best tips he showed me was to always remember that the energy of the balls is transferred in every way, not just direction of travel. So if you can't quite get a good angle on a pocket, you can put left or right hand english on the cue ball and it will transfer to the object ball, helping it in its travel towards or bouncing into the pocket. Random grab to a discussion:

https://tinyurl.com/2et5jcy6

Once I got a feel for that my ability changed dramatically. I was never anywhere above "nice guy that is fun to play one pocket against if you see him at the pool hall," but I could at least be fairly competitive against the other low-level nobodies.
