The free music with Amazon Prime has gone full Nazi. When you choose "Your Favorites" it plays a song or two, then injects something new. You don't like it so you skip that tune and it then injects another song which is not a favorite either. So you skip that tune also. At a certain point it will announce 'Maximum number of skips" and it will no longer allow you to skip songs you don't want to listen to. I'm sure it's part of some woke bullshit. DEI can DIAF. The tech company layoffs to me seem more like the Christmas retail hiring. They have a busy time, they need to hire more employees to cover the business, then things slow down to "normal" again.
So, now what do you have the employees do? It's not part of tech business usual procedures. Posted by: Bruce at January 27, 2023 05:06 AM (vd8XM) 43
I'm dumping Amazon and going back full on to Spotify because Amazon's user software sucks balls. Posted by: Lost In Space at January 27, 2023 04:56 AM It is intentionally inserting music from African-American artists into playlists. But not the ones I want to listen to. I like a lot of jazz, and AA artists are well represented in that category of music. But a lot of them suck and I don't want to hear them. They have taken away freedom of choice in the matter. It's this constant drip, drip, drip of loss of freedom in search of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that pisses me off. I still have the choice to 'vote with my feet' which I intend to do. I can say from experience that Spotify makes recommendations on your musical taste and doesn't go down the Woke rabbit hole. This applies to their radio playlists too whether it's free or paid. Plus there's Spotify connect functionality is built into something like every AV receiver on the planet. If you're not familiar with Spotify connect, it allows you to cast music right to your amplifier and run it through your home stereo. It is pretty fantastic. It's probably just reverting to "whatever is the most popular right now" because you're not giving it any likes or favorites to work with. I don't have any issues with streaming services, free or paid, playing things way out of genre. Also, most streamers have a settings page where you can open up or restrict how adventurous the auto-gen playlist gets.

Layoffs do have one concrete impact. Pfeffer’s research has found that layoffs literally kill people — by increasing the risk that someone will die by suicide and by levering up stress, both among people laid off and among those who remain. Layoffs may also reduce productivity among those who remain employed.
Of course. You can't lay people off, they might kill themselves! You can't misgender them, they might kill themselves! You can't take away their 3 hour morning coffee break, they might kill themselves! It is a hostage situation, except these gen z's put the gun to their own heads. Also says layoffs don't boost productivity among the remaining employees.
You get a solid 45 minutes of work per day out of 10,000, lay off 3000. You get 30 minutes of work per day out of 7,000, the other 15 minutes is spent whining about how much extra work they now have. Hey, all,
It's getting so I cannot watch the early morning "news" shows locally. All I care about is weather and traffic, of course, but they insist on giving me newsreaders the size of the Titanic. The CBS outlet has an attractive slim redhead who has been doing weather off and on for some years -- but they rarely use her. Instead we get a guy who looks like he belongs on Will and Grace; and the traffic "reporter" is as big as a Nissan Sentra. Once upon a time, didn't you have to be *attractive* to get on TV????? Oh, well, I can get the weather from their websites. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 27, 2023 05:43 AM (omVj0) 71

Spotify Earnings Stats: The $100k-plus-per-year club counted 7,800 members in 2020. The $500k-plus-per-year club counted 1,820 artists in 2020. And the $1 million-plus-per-year club counted 870 artists in 2020. So, in Amazons case, someone has to manually tag a database with a logical (Y/N) as far as diversity for 10's of thousands of musical artists. Then get laid off when finished. I recently dusted off a record player I bought for my wife's classroom years ago, hooked it up to a soundbar and we listen to that. It's funny how CD's are a continuous about 45 minutes long, but you have to flip a record over after about 20 minutes. First world problem, I know. But, no commercials, no insertion of little-known 'diverse' artists, just good music with the occasional pop, hiss, or scratch. Sorry Amazon, when you notice payments to popular artists are less, and they notice and say, "What the hell is going on?" I hope you have a good excuse. You killed the Golden Goose. We had 4 years of a Golden Age, in the midst of insanity. Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at January 27, 2023 06:20 AM (u82oZ) Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as “bad luck.” Posted by: rhennigantx at January 27, 2023 06:51 AM (BRHaw) 154

I do take some minor umbrage at that "bad luck" quote, and that loosely platonic assumption it makes that prosperity is the work of an unappreciated Noble Few.
Prosperity is not the gift of some rare übermensch doing all the Right Things. It's the result of the boring, unwashed Many being forced to solve their own problems. It's the result of removing the boot of the self anointed supermen from the necks of the rabble and forcing them to fend for themselves. Will they at least play the national anthem before turning off our electricity for the night when it starts happening here?
Pakistani officials had planned to save on energy costs by turning off electricity across the country overnight. Nighttime has the lowest usage hours for energy in Pakistan, where winters are relatively mild. The problem came when technicians tried to reboot the electric system in the morning, and found out that the infrastructure wasn’t capable of booting up the entire nation’s energy grid all at once. Major cities, including the capital city of Islamabad, as well as smaller cities and towns across the country were left in the dark for 15 hours on Monday, lasting into the night. You are not quite up to speed on technology used for body cams. No one really wants the technology except the lawyers that are suing the city for some bogus violence charge. So the city virtue signals and says "we will force officers to wear body cams". The cops sure as hell don't want them because of the criminal shit they do each day, and the low-bidder for the contract to provide and maintain the cams sure doesn't want any cut into the profits, so everyone is happy with very low resolution video with absolutely no video stabilization or light filters added. Bit more than that. Regular panels need to have enough structural integrity to support their additional weight - plus they look like hell and will kill anyone who crawls around up there and makes accidental contact with the connectors during peak sun. Tesla roof is wildly expensive, but does look cool and can be installed on more roofs without the beefing up the entire wall and rafters Posted by: Reuben Hick at January 27, 2023 07:39 AM (l7lsb) 238

Prosperity is not the gift of some rare übermensch doing all the Right Things. It's the result of the boring, unwashed Many being forced to solve their own problems.
