K-Tel Cafe

ketelstarflight.jpg
K-Tel's Starflight compilation, 1979

I've been noticing that a lot of the "Forgotten 80s" songs I want to put in the sidebar are akshually from 1979.

Here are some 1979 Mystery Clicks, with clues:

#1 Billboard song of 1979. Such a huge song it incurred a disco-like backlash. Here's them playing it live, maybe sometime in the early 90s? The vocals are ragged but they kill the guitar solos.

This Noted Queen had a lot of hits this year, but this location-based anthem about baking and meteorology is the oddest.

Sounds like Kansas but you're all wet, Mate, they're Australian! And singing about a loveless luckless man.

Speaking of Australians, this hot little blonde scored a hit in the US when she released this in 1979. (It was released in other countries in 1978.) Where, where did my innocence go?/How, how was a young girl to know?/I'm trapped, trapped in the spell of your eyes/In the warmth of your arms/In the web of your lies. It's only the chorus that is memorable but I can't give you those lyrics because they contain the song title. It's not "Physical", which was 1981. Sorry I don't really have good clue.

Another Australian band released this hard-driving rock hit: No stop sign, speed limit/nothin's gonna slow me down.

You get a shiver in the dark/It's raining in the park, but meantime/South of the river, you stop, and you hold everything/A band is blowing Dixie, double-four time. Actually released in 1978 but it stiffed, so they re-released it in 1979 and it became a hit. First time I ever heard of this band, which would become Medium-Level Iconic in the 80s.

Funky bunch that scored a few hits including You Sexy Thing but really rocked with this killer guitar-and-synth hook. Never could believe the things you do to me/Never could believe the way you are/Every day I bless the day that you got through to me/'Cause baby, I believe that you're a star

This loping ballad reaches the heavens with a wide specter of emotions. Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat/He's ridin' hard to catch that herd, but he ain't caught 'em yet.

Disco was on its way out but that didn't stop this huge rock band, who are even huger money whores, from trying to score a hit with a disco-tempo love song. Or sex song, really. This song was written when the group's label wanted them to put out a "more commercial sound," and the band's lead singer said something like "It's so easy to write a disco hit, I bet I could write one in a day." He got together with a disco songwriter and wrote this in a single session.

A big British Invasion rock band got inspired by late-1978 science fantasy blockbuster and also decided to put out a disco song, which I'm pretty sure they instantly regretted. The song failed to soar in the skies like they'd hoped.

Another British prog rock band (I guess) that really centered the synthesizer also went full disco with this blazing single. Can you understand (yes, I understand)/
Can you feel it's right (I know it is)/Will you be the same (I'll do it all again)/
Hu, hu, hu-ha, hu-ha, hu-ha, hu-ha, hu.

Something must have been in the air, because this British prog/psychadelic rock band also gave the lead single for their massive concept album a disco beat and scored one of the biggest singles ever, and their only UK and US number one. All in all, the disco beat was a sound choice.

Country crossover smash that a lot of radio stations played without bleeping out the mid-level curse near the song's end. Maybe there was some special FCC rule that you're allowed to curse on the radio if the person you're cursing is Satan.

Sad song about love of a lost family member, released on the last studio album released before this mega arena rock band disbanded: The cup is raised, the toast is made yet again.

One of the biggest rock bands of the 70s that disintegrated on contact with the 80s. Kind of softdicked overall, but this song rebels from their usual style: Hangman is comin' down from the gallows.

Easy strummin', feel-good ballad about gang-r@pe and murder. And there were three of them. This song has been the subject of extensive analysis by Noted Experts.

This song was originally offered to Karen Carpenter, but she turned it down. A young Motown singer took it and turned it into a major hit, though he would have much bigger hits in a few years. Relax your mind/lay back and groove with mine.

Okay so this single was actually released in 1978, but the live version, from one of the world's only live albums that launched a band from nobodies into stars, is from 1979, so this counts: Father says, "Your mother's right/She's really up on things/Before we married, Mommy served/In the WACS in the Philippines".

This very soft rock song, sung by a female singer, was actually on the Starflight K-Tel compilation. I'd rather be a fool with a broken heart/Than someone who never had a part of you.

This song was also on the Starflight compilation: New York Paris London Munich.

Best moment of the decade. Same owner gave away free beer and um, it didn't end well, He had the players wear shorts on a hot day too. And put a midget up at the plate to bat since his strike zone was like 6". He didn't get a lot of wins but it was fun stuff.

His son, who was largely responsible for the event, got banned from the big leagues and wound up running the St. Paul Saints. They're famous for doing silly stuff, and Bill Murray is a part owner. Apparently they joined the dark side and got a minor-league affiliation at some point but when I lived there they were independent and could do basically whatever they wanted to so long as the bills got paid.

Journey did that to me. The radio stations played it way way too much and I was just sick of them but now I am in deep respect for the band. Huge talent, amazing singer, great songs.

I like most of their stuff, but I do really like the poppy stuff, too. Just about everything on Communiqué could probably be called that. Portobello Belle, Angel of Mercy, Lady Writer. That album may be my favorite if a band like Dire Straits can have a single album as a favorite.

I only know this because my best friends from high school (in Las Vegas) were Mormons, but one of them who I played football with was attending BYU in '81 informed me that Olivia Newton-John's song "Physical" had been banned by several radio stations in Utah.

The suggestive line that apparently did it was "There's nothin' left to talk about / Unless it's horizontally."

Best part? My friend jokingly yells: "Hey, I thought it was a song about football!"

The hole (pun intended) in the Pentagon's claim they aren't shooting down the Chink balloon due to debris risk to people and structures on the ground is: The Chinks could command deflate or explode the balloon anytime they choose. Or it could be hit by a meteoroid, deflate, and land anywhere.

But instead of destroying the balloon over sparsely populated Montana, Biden and the the generals are letting the Chinks fly to balloon over high population density areas like the St. Louis metro area. Insane.

300 My older brother David had a bright idea of how to deal with dandelions in the yard. He poured gas on each one (this, during the 70's gas crisis, I should add) and then put the can aside and lit the dandelion.

The gas can was open. The flame arced over like a cartoon into the gas can and ignited it into a flame from the nozzle. All four of us brothers ran, fearing a movie-like gigantic explosion. After a while we realized that the gas was just going to slowly burn off, and David had a brainstorm!

Pour water from the hose into the gas to put it out. It... worked, but then we forgot to dump it anywhere and dad later used the watery gas in the car to fill it up and yeah.

Friend bought some flares that you twist the base on, and then strike that end with your palm to ignite them, and they would burn for a while, and he didn't know how long.
We took it to the back yard one rainy night to figure it out before it was an emergency [hehe], and apparently you were supposed to hit it on the ground to ignite because when wet, it would ignite and pop out of your hand and fall into the bushes.
Quick one of us said, get the hose! and the hose was got, turned on and was five feet too short, it was wonderful, just like a mean dog hitting the end of his chain.
I got it, I yelled as I went and got the jerry can: NO screamed my friend, THAT'S GAS

It was either allowed into our airspace, or no one noticed.

390 With the not-shooting-down-the-Chiner balloon I go with the anti-Occam's razor. Some things are just so stupid at face value that you know there must be more than one stupid going on.

Sp I think the reality is layers of stupid, such as US NORAD etc having been caught with their pants down for much of the flight. So, enter bureaucrat stupid: everyone responsible takes a "whoah let's wait a minute" attitude to avoid anyone thinking they'd blown some kind of critical time window.

Then JFB gets on the horn with Ping and says something stupid and gives some kind of "assurance" we won't shoot it down, but "Mister I don't ever want to see you do this again!" bullshit to make himself feel better.

Then wiser heads tell JFB maybe not such a hot idea. But now JFB's boxed in and doesn't want to immediately reverse himself. Then DOD says we don't want to advertise that we didn't know about it's entry, so act like we were tracking it all along. And we can learn more about it by observing so we know their capabilities. And we'd reveal too much of our own capability by shooting it down...etc. I'm going with layers of stupid.

Balloons move kind of slow. This thing flew over the Aleutian Islands, over Alaska and over Canada before hitting the lower 48. Our current government might be corrupt and inept but we and even the Canucks have a shitload of satellites watching our airspace and despite how woke our military has become there is no way they didn't see this thing for a long time.

There isn't a chance in hell nobody saw this balloon until it popped up in Montana. They allowed it to come into the US airspace and they've allowed it to fly over some of our most sensitive missile sites.

I'm not seeing a lot of outrage. We had a general give a Pentagon briefing today say that the balloon could be in US airspace for another 60 hours as if that was normal. And not to be redundant but the balloon is flying over some of our most sensitive missile sites and contrary to earlier reports the balloon does have the ability to move directionally, it's not just being carried by the wind.

Under Bush 2, the Chinese shot down a US spy plane that got too close to Chinese air space. They imprisoned the crew and looted the plane before giving both back after humiliating the US for a while.

Our government and 90% of our media is yawning.

458 Medium level iconic in the 80’s is relative. I saw them at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, that was after the fire, I think. Knopfler played Romeo and Juliet, my gf was deep into music and his solo brought her to tears. That was a night. Years later i married a girl who owns a Resonator. Seventeen years later we’re still trying to find the right place to hang it. For me Dire Straits is half of the 80’s. Of course Highway to Hell was the HS soundtrack.
