Seasons Beavers Cafe

foginyorkshire.jpg
Fog in Yorkshire, in Horsforth/Leeds.
by Shaun Walby

Racoon ninja.

Puppy escape artist.

Cat thieves.

Dog on the Escher Stairs.

Neat idea -- a concave window to let birds into your house, sort of.

Tiny little bird nest built inside... a leaf.

Fuzzy Rider.

This girl really knows how to "swing her nunchucks," if you know what I'm sayin'.

Boy with his pet porcupine.

Cat swats doggo in the nose -- which activates his Warp Drive Module.

Post-Christmas beavering. I linked a shorter version of this before.

Sound on. At least watch through :30.

He's so cute. My favorite parts are when he really stops to carefully ponder where the perfect placement of the Spongebob Squarepants doll in his Stairway Dam would be.

315 When in Basic Training the senior Drill sergeant came through the barracks one night all exercised and freaked out about every window had to be cracked open a couple inches. He seemed almost obsessive about it, and was talking about Meningitis.

Some years I put it together, kinda. Meningitis is spread in close contact, barracks and dorms are classic. He was just the right age to have been in the Army in the late 60s or early 70s when a Meningitis outbreak occured and killed quite a few soldiers. All soldiers or recruits get what's called a "Meningococcus" vaccine if I recall. It's pretty well tolerated, I think.

This is what killed Jeff Beck aomaof.

329 Very quick survey of (mostly useless, tendentious, and non-scientific) info pretty much comports with common sense on DU.

It's radioactive emissions, when in machined form (projectiles or armor) do not pose a significant health risk.

Much like asbestos, the only significant risk may be through inhalation/longer-term presence in the lungs. That is, like SMH said, as dust or in aerosolized form.

But in my brief effort I didn't find anything approaching real data-based scientific inferences on whether such health damage had actually ever been observed.

346 You guys just reminded me of the best beaver joke ever, which actually happened:
~40 years ago my boss at a high-tech company in San Francisco invited all the employees to dinner at his house in the suburbs with him, his wife (an Alaskan Indian), and their 9 daughters, who ranged in age from 6 to 30-something.
His wife's relatives back home had shot a beaver and sent it to her with plenty of dry ice, and she had cooked it up as the centerpiece of dinner. One fellow-employee was a rather naive, clean-minded guy, as was his wife. When the main course was announced, he said "You know, I've always heard of 'eating beaver pie' but I've never actually done it", at which point the boss, all the other employees, and the boss's older daughters laughed uncontrollably for 10-15 minutes straight, while the younger daughters kept saying "Daddy, daddy, what's so funny? Explain it to me."
(By the way, I'd never heard of "eating beaver pie", but have always been able to tell when something is a dirty joke, just from the expression and tone of voice of the one saying it.)

347 Predictions, from ZOD:

1. Russia will cave. There won't be outright regime change (China and Russia both have as #1 succession stability, because the guys just under the throne insist), but Putin will roll/die and his understudy will negotiate for the gains he can get. Zelensky will take the best deal he can get, sell off the Russia-predominant eastern regions and the Crimea (he'll NEVER get that back--it's just ethnically baked in)
2. As soon as it blows over, NATO erection will collapse. "Thank ZOD that blew over!"
3. It won't be Vietnam. There won't be nuclear flyovers.
4. Saudi Arabia will continue to parch.
5. China will continue to pursue soft-power with Taiwan; there won't be a "Million-Man-Swim."
6. North Korea will continue to work on the Blue House for 'reconciliation.' Half of the South already politically wants it.
7. Cincinnati/Philly will win the Super Bowl.

Posted by: ZOD at January 25, 2023 09:37 PM (Q/6pY)

348 NATO membership has been rendered half-moot already. The difference in military support to Ukraine now, vs. as a formal NATO member, would be more of degree than kind. Of course the collective defense thing, but that's why I say "half-moot".

Prior to the war Ukraine was integrating with the west across the board, from naval special operations to armor to whatever. Training, hardware contracts, extensive coordination.

So Russia's (not just Putin's) top goal is already unattainable, and likely was on February 24 last year. Ukraine's non-neutrality, and military alignment with the west, is now much much much "worse" (from Moscow's perspective) than it was. A quick victory leading to regime change/and/or some kind of commitment to neutrality* was the only path to attaining the top objective. The other objectives will likely be achieved, though possibly over decades.

* such commitments are impossible to enforce in this situation, which is why I think that maintaining Uke non-alignment was mission-impossible for Russia, over time

Posted by: mikeski

Uranium exists as a mixture of isotopes in nature. Natural Uranium is mostly Isotope 238. Isotopic separation is getting out the more unstable (faster decay) or "degenerate" U235 Isotope. I think there is roughly 1 part U235 to 5000 parts U238 in natural Uranium. The combination of roughly equal amounts of U235 and U238 is what makes A-bombs go "BOOM". If you take all the U235 out (which is more radioactive in decay), what is left behind is "Depleted" U238, which is negligibly radioactive; it is very dense and apparently DOES burn when it hits a tank, for instance, at high velocity. The M1 fired a 120 mm sabot round, that ended up being a U238 dart, that punched through Iraqi tanks like a hot knife through butter.

364 Actually Kiev will the one to eventually cave, on the eastern territories. Now the russkis have muddied the waters, considerably, with the move to integrate Zaporozhe and Kherson into the RF. Much more complicated than D & L. I figured when such talk started it was just bargaining leverage to get a D & L deal, but not lookin' like it. A mistake on Russia's part, my first take on it.

Crimea's back as part of Russia and that's settled, whatever Ukraine or Denmark think.

Recall Ukraine was shelling "their" territories* of D & L for 8 years already. Don't think Moscow wants to go back to that situation, so an artillery buffer will be a minimum objective, over time.

Consider their objectives: Ukrainian regime change/political collapse; military success; international sympathy; economic benefit. None has occurred.

They have nuclear weapons, and haven't used them. They're being militarily shamed by a former satellite nation (which isn't that economically strong, given the flow of value to expat nations), and the world has no sympathy for their claims.

How are they winning?

Correct. It's not the radioactivity (alpha particles) that poses a problem but the chemical toxicity of uranium compounds on living tissues. Thus inhalation or ingestion of uranium oxide are the problem.

382 Is the Cougar of Kiev still a thing?

Posted by: davidt at January 25, 2023 09:54 PM (SYTee)

383 Russia's aims were pretty simple, first one was probably already unattainable (Uke military non-alignment) and is clearly unlikely to be reached. Second one, on the eastern territories, is attainable, but could take years, and "defeating" them on that is likely beyond Ukraine's ability or sustainable political limit.

So Ukraine's stated war aims of reclaiming all territory is very far-fetched. And everything beyond that is clearly empty posturing (reparations, etc).

All talk of winning and losing needs to be couched in specific terms related to actual objectives of both sides, which it never is, far as I can see.

396 I'm pretty sure they're not trying to take KEEEEV. They're just helping launder money and introduce weapons into the area for re-sale to interested buyers for as long as possible and they'll get KEEEEV at the end of the deal per the agreement.

There are no winners and losers. There's just when they decide it's over because the money has run out. Ukraine laundry workers already admitted this. Newsweek earlier this month:
