The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"So while oil prices have decreased by about 20% since their June peak, as I was just talking about earlier, prices at the pump have only fallen about 10% over the same period. So that means profits are up way above average. Refiners’ profit margins per gallon of gas are averaging about 90 cents last week, roughly double what’s typical for this time of the year," WH Spokesdunce Karine Jean Pierre

Quote II

“The Commonwealth is committed to increasing economic opportunity for all people of Pennsylvania by creating new pathways to public employment.” PA Gov. Josh Shapiro

Quote III

"The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own.You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny."Albert Ellis

Quote IV

“We are living in a time of unprecedented danger, and the Doomsday Clock time reflects that reality,” Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

Why anyone would want to enlist in the Armed Forces is beyond me. The love of country by these folks is overwhelming when they are constantly slapped and spit upon by our government.

U.S. service members who were fired for refusing to comply with the Pentagon's COVID-19 vaccine mandate are now being forced to pay back their original recruitment bonuses, which they tell Fox News Digital is a "kick in the face" after years of dedicating their lives to protecting the country.

One former Army soldier who was fired for refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine last May told Fox News Digital that he would have to pay back his original signing bonus upon his termination from the military because he did not complete the commitment in his contract.

Ted Cruz Republican Senator from the State of Texas had my primary vote in 2016. I think he's a halfway decent politician. But this legislation he introduced has not a snowball's chance in hell.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) introduced a constitutional amendment on Tuesday to impose term limits on members of Congress.

The amendment would limit U.S. senators to two terms of six years each and representatives to three terms of two years each from the time of the amendment’s enactment.

“Term limits are critical to fixing what’s wrong with Washington, D.C. The Founding Fathers envisioned a government of citizen legislators who would serve for a few years and return home, not a government run by a small group of special interests and lifelong, permanently entrenched politicians who prey upon the brokenness of Washington to govern in a manner that is totally unaccountable to the American people,” Cruz said in a statement sent to The Daily Wire.

Quite frankly I would like to see a vote on disbanding the United States of America and allowing states to form federations. I have nothing in common with the State of California and its beliefs and laws.

Tonight's schadenboner.

Nolte: Brits Pay More to Charge Electric Car than to Gas Up

Per mile traveled, our British friends are now paying more to charge their electric cars than to gas them up.

Do stories come any more feel-good than this?

No, no, they do not:

Rapid charge points used by motorists topping up on long drives are now nearly £10 more expensive than filling up a car with petrol, the RAC revealed last week.

But research from the AA published on Monday finds that recharging an electric car even using a slow public charger at peak times can be more expensive, per mile driven afterwards, than for refuelling a comparable petrol car.

Sea spiders can regrow lost anuses and sex organs - leaving scientists stunned

Researchers have speculated that arthropods' ability to regenerate lost limbs may hold the key to treating human amputees - although in the case of sea spiders, their regrowth did not always go completely to plan.

The Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum and I have a simple home. No fancy "smart" gadgets for us.

Appliance makers sad that 50% of customers won’t connect smart appliances

Did users change their Wi-Fi password, or did they see the nature of IoT privacy?

Appliance makers like Whirlpool and LG just can't understand. They added Wi-Fi antennae to their latest dishwashers, ovens, and refrigerators and built apps for them—and yet only 50 percent or fewer of their owners have connected them. What gives?

The issue, according to manufacturers quoted in a Wall Street Journal report (subscription usually required), is that customers just don't know all the things a manufacturer can do if users connect the device that spins their clothes or keeps their food cold—things like "providing manufacturers with data and insights about how customers are using their products" and allowing companies to "send over-the-air updates" and "sell relevant replacement parts or subscription services."

I'm use to seeing Florida property owners having a hard time obtain property coverage. This is a new one for me.

If your Hyundai or Kia uses a physical ignition key, it can be stolen with relative ease. As we've reported, a USB cable is all that's necessary to get away with a new car. It's a costly problem for police in cities such as Colombus, Ohio, and Denver. Insurers in these regions and others have now had enough. Insurance giants State Farm and Progressive refuse to insure many vehicles sold by the two Korean auto brands in those cities and others now.

We've reached out to the insurers to get official confirmation but haven't yet heard back. News outlets in both of the aforementioned regions have independently confirmed many Kia/Hyundai owners have been denied coverage, even if their vehicles do not have physical ignition keys. Staffers at The Drive who live in Denver were refused policies from Progressive when attempting to insure a Hyundai/Kia online: "Based on the vehicle information provided, we are unable to offer you a policy at this time," the company said.

My guess this kid is white. And his teenage actions will haunt him the rest of his life. Unlike Antifa and BLM.

UMATILLA, Ore. - The Umatilla School District (USD) reported hateful statements had been broadcast during a Umatilla High School basketball game on January 20, leading the district to immediately launch an investigation.

"The statements were appalling, and we denounce them..." said the district's initial social media post about the incident. "Hate has no place at Umatilla High School. We, as a school community, stand for respect and inclusion, a place where all are free to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. Following the investigation, we will move forward to address this act and ensure that all people are accepted and treated with respect in our schools."

What use to be a quick and inexpensive meal remains quick but expensive.

If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you’ve probably faced sticker shock on an unlikely product: eggs. Egg prices more than doubled from December 2021 to December 2022, rising 237% to average $4.25 per dozen nationwide. In some areas, people report paying as much as $6 or $7 for a dozen eggs!

Bread is no longer inexpensive either.

What are the certainties of life? Taxes and death. Not a job. And call me old-fashioned and uncaring. But if you are a man why are you taking maternity leave?

A married couple with a four-month-old baby were both hit by Google's mass layoffs on Friday.

Allie was on maternity leave, while her husband, Steve, was set to go on paternity leave in a few weeks.

They said they'd work full-time on their own business instead. "This was the push that we needed."

I think California Governor Newsom needs to build a wall to keep his affluent citizens inside the state.

Gavin Newsom wants to tax Californians AFTER they've moved out of state
"The proposed California wealth tax would be economically destructive, challenging to administer and would drive many wealthy residents — and all their current tax payments — out of state."

I wonder how many relatives of Rep. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar Nuhr (D-MN) were knocked out in this strike.

The U.S. military targeted Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa, in a pair of strikes in central Somalia over the past several days.

The first attack took place on Jan. 20 near the town of Galcad in Somalia’s central region of Galguduud. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said it killed at least 30 Shabaab members in what it calls “a collective self-defense strike.” Somali troops recently recaptured Galcad as part of major counter-offensives against the jihadist group.

That airstrike corresponds to a massive Shabaab suicide assault on a Somali National Army (SNA) base in the town, in which two suicide car bombs were used to target the base before an assault team stormed the perimeter. At least seven SNA troops were killed in the assault.

Photos later released by Shabaab appear to show the capture of dozens of SNA vehicles, which were likely later destroyed in AFRICOM’s airstrike.

Somalia, Ukraine, Syria Uncle Joe has our fingers in a lot of pies at the moment.

SELANGOR, MALAYSIA — A Bangladesh kid from Chittagong who was playing hide-and-seek with friends, never expected that he would be trapped inside a shipping container, travel a thousand miles, and land on Malaysian soil.

In a media statement issued today(20 January), Cha Hoong Fong, police chief of South Klang District confirmed that a 45-year-old shipping operator had informed the police that a foreign boy had been discovered in the container at the Westport area of Port Klang on 17 January 9 pm.

A TikToker, presumably working at Port Klang recorded the incident when auxiliary police at the port opened the container and rescued the kid.

11 They knew: why didn't the unvaccinated do more to warn us?
The unvaccinated knew what we didn't. Some of them said too little. Most said nothing at all. A lot of blood is now on their hands.

"It is time for the unvaccinated to take responsibility for their actions and to work with the rest of us to find a solution to this crisis. We cannot afford to let their selfishness and lack of action continue to harm our communities. It is time for the unvaccinated to step up and do the right thing.

The unvaccinated should by any moral measuring stick have done more to warn about the potential risks -- to help us make informed decisions about our health. And they must now ask us for our forgiveness.
And, hand to heart, we may just give it to them.

Because we are good people. We took those injections because it was the right thing to do -- until it wasn't."

71 >>>Appliance makers sad that 50% of customers won’t connect smart appliances

I've got 1 smart appliance I have connected for convenience: an oven. I can setup the cooking instructions from my phone. It has a temperature probe, so I go stick the probe in my hunk of meat and stick it in the oven.

I have to start it from the oven itself. You can't make the oven heat up remotely. You must hit start at the oven. Good idea!

I can then monitor the progress from my phone in the other room and when the probe hits the desired temp, the oven turns off and let me know.

I like!

If you aren’t aware, there are accusations of some pretty horrific things going on at my beloved Ft. Bragg. Accusations of drug dealing, human trafficking, and even murder coming out of the special operations community. It’s pretty bad. I just copied and pasted a part of it, wonder how the corrupt judge in AZ will piss on this new data:
We received just a few weeks ago, January of 2023, the system log files from the tabulators that were used in Maricopa County on Election Day, along with the redacted CVR records. Through an analysis, we were able to determine that a quarter of a million ballot feeds [were] misread by those tabulators,” Busch explained. “There are approximately two tabulators in every polling Center, which means there were 446 tabulators with a quarter of a million voter attempt failures.”

Shelby Bush confirms after reviewing the system log files from the tabulators on election day, nearly a quarter-million ballots were misread.
With 446 tabulators across the county, there's no doubt the integrity of the election in Maricopa County was compromised. pic.twitter.com/GKyW8kFNQz

----------------------
It's been well-documented throughout history that pregnancy is violence, and intentional implantation of a fetus has often used as a tool by the patriarchy to dominate birthing people.

This is because in relatively recent history, up to 1 in 3 birthing people died during childbirth. And as explained above, abortion literally saves lives because the operation is 11 times safer than pregnancy.

[...]

There have been over 60 million abortions since the life saving Roe V. Wade SCOTUS decision. In other words, abortion could have possibly saved the lives of up to 20 million birthing people.

Conservatives and Elon bros often try to claim that the "lives" of the parasites known as fetuses (and yes, fetuses meet all scientific criteria for the definition "parasite") are more important than the lives of birthing people.
------------

They also say they close comments on most articles because their moderators are "traumatized". This site is hilarious.

145 I think California Governor Newsom needs to build a wall to keep his affluent citizens inside the state.

In what is obviously a coordinated effort, legislators in about ten blue states (including California and Washington) are all suddenly proposing wealth taxes of about 1%.

But don't worry - the wealth tax will only apply to billionaires, so you have nothing to worry about.

I dunno. There's a big difference between baby sitting occasionally, and baby sitting 40 hours a week. My sister babysat for her grandson one day a week when his parents' work schedules overlapped. I wonder if part of the problem with the British mom is that she doesn't have a husband. Single parenthood creates a whole set of problems. Many married couples try to work different shifts, so that one parent is home most of the time.

Known on the street as “tranq,” the sedative is now found in 91% of Philly’s heroin and fentanyl supplies, according to a report earlier this month in the peer-reviewed journal Science Direct.

In addition to all the savvy comments I see here, about how it's not just about a given type of hardware, it's about the ongoing support and maintenance of said hardware that matters, there's something else.

Some Abrams aren't going to by themselves change much if anything. War is mostly a boring contest of organization, systems, resources - and certainly this type of war, which is conventional. It also plays out against a specific geographic and strategic background, and specific goals of the combatants.

Russia is very unlikely to achieve their maximum goals. Ukraine is even more unlikely to achieve even their intermediate goals. Next comment for what those are.

339 Russian goals: Ukraine military non-alignment/neutrality (formal, or de facto). This was probably *already* out of reach a year ago. Always was a long-shot, at least in the last decade. Only realistic shot at that was the original plan, which seems sort of evident, of a quick overwhelming victory leading to regime change, and peace terms including non-alignment.

Russia also *must* secure independence (well, integration into Russian Federation) and safety of Donetsk & Lugansk. Kiev will never rule those areas again, but whether they are normal, or like the Sea of Galilee kibutzim in the 1960s/70s (subject to constant shelling) is not so easy. And adding Zaporozhe and Kherson to the menu - wow, that was likely a mistake and enormously complicates Russian "victory" conditions.

343 Ukraine: stated goals (unlike some of the Russian fluff) are simple and the actual ones - recovery of all territories lost to Russian control, restoration of February 23, 2022 borders. Reparations, trials, blah blah blah, nonsense for the rubes.

Russia will likely achieve most of their secondary goals. Ukraine will achieve none of theirs, but of course already have close to de facto NATO status. Which, in perspective, is stupid and pointless, and vastly inferior to prosperous neutrality. Ukraine's economic integration with Russia is substantial and natural, unlikely they'll replace that with anything equivalent from the west. But that water is long ago under the bridge.

356 As this war is a very low-intensity one, not to mention fairly clumsy and slow, I've not even bothered with 99% of western "reporting" or analysis. Whatever happens that's important will be obvious, and known. Most of everything else is background noise or details that won't determine anything.

So for practice I've limited myself mostly to russki media and websites. The social media channel Telegram has what is sort of an aggregation site called - hmm, not sure what it's called in English. Something close to "ribar", whose Russian meaning has something to do with fish or fishing, maybe. Anyway, they have an "English" tab I've never clicked, but one can read the English version (and they do their maps in Spanish and German as well).

Reasonably attached to reality, at least their daily summaries, though clearly a pro-Russian perspective. They report Russian reverses and losses, even engage in spirited fights over strategery etc. Several different sites and people are "retweeted" there.

Outstanding!

The Union of Concerned Scientists (my good buddy brilliantly dubbed them the Union of Concerned Shepherds) used to have weekly morning briefings for Hill staff on skeery skeery nukyler war and arms control topics (this was back in the Cold War days).

They had free donuts and coffee, so I occasionally went (and fought back laughter much of the time). There was also this hot green-eyed redhead from some other Senate office who was always there (she was a lightweight, actually took them seriously, but, you know).

In fairness, UCS would provide good straight factual info upon request. They weren't bad people, or stupid - one just had to treat them as research assistants, their judgements weren't worth taking seriously.

Closest are some pretty actual expert US guys, but haven't checked them in a while.

It's weird, both of them made a clear effort to remain neutral and analytical about things, did so for a while, but over time the tone, and what they ignored or didn't address, sort of told me they were trimming their sails to accommodate the Correct Mindset. They just started paternity leave at the auto company I work for. I think it's 8 weeks. One guy in my group, a supervisor, took his paternity leave during our busiest time right when we had program milestone report outs to do. In addition, there were a bunch of layoffs and a reorg and he ended up coming back to having only 1 person left in his group that had been 4.

This was about a year ago and I think he still has not caught back up from all the time he took off.

Sounds wonderful until you consider the state's ban the box laws and that roughly 65,000 jobs will be in play.

Also, What does the term ban box mean?
It's an international movement initiated by civil rights group who require employers to remove questions related to the applicant's criminal history from job applications in order to prevent employment discrimination.

Now if Josh gave parents choices regarding their children's education, that would finally be a good thing as it would encourage young families to stay.

Rudolph Tyner, aged 23, was on death row in CCI prison for a March 1978 double-murder[29] when he was murdered by Gaskins on September 12, 1982.[30] Tyner was appealing his own death sentence after being convicted for robbing a Murrells Inlet convenience store and killing store owners Bill and Myrtle Moon on March 18, 1978.[31][32] The Moons' son, Tony Cimo, hired Gaskins for $2,000 to kill Rudolph Tyner because in Cimo's view, the appeals process was taking too long.[33] Tony Cimo asked Gaskins what he needed to kill Tyner, then Gaskins told him to insert some C4 inside the heel of a shoe and mail it to him

I can't vouch for duck eggs.

But you roast your Irish Roast Potato quarters in duck fat, and pull 'em from the oven every fifteen and spoon more of that fat back over the taters? Repeat till those skins show a bit of deep golden brown, like a french fry.

Pull from oven, plate, slice "X" into the top of the tater, squeeze a bit. Shove as much Kerrygold Butter in there as you can.

NOM! MOAR NOM! Might not be eggs, but you ARE going to waddle away from the table!

My 95 yr old father has been pulling some stunts lately. This afternoon, he put a small hand towel in the toilet.

The water had, uh, material in it. I was up there doing some faucet leak fixing, and noticed a mess in the toilet. I flushed it, trying not to look. I saw that towel going down.

Well, there wasn't anything to do but do an emergency yank out, "stuff and all". It was not pretty. But I avoided disaster of a hand towel clogging the toilet.

An elderly neighbor lady, now passed (2019, I think) pulled a one quite off-the-wall stunt. Her husband, quite a character and fixture of the local community and one of my father's big buds had died a few months earlier.

The wife had already gone sort of wifty, according to her son, but she pulled a doozy. His wife had gone over there to check on the mother, and smelled something burning.

Long story short, she had gone to the stove, lifted up the flip up electric coil (you know, to get access to the pan underneath), and then poured dry cat food in said pan. She flipped the coil back down, then turned the burner on.

At that point, they realized she couldn't be left alone, so they moved her to their house.

Recommending pregnant take this clot shot poison was the one of the most egregious things ever done. I was reading a Substack post of Peter McCullough talking about how they were basically bought off by the govt.

Previously any novel, much less experimental drugs or treatment were strictly verbotten for pregnant women. You only want to use something in that group if you're sure it's safe for the baby. And that means positive proof, not absence of negative evidence.

You would only do otherwise in extreme cases where the life of the mother or fetus was in jeopardy.

They threw that out the window, and apparently for 30 pieces of silver.

Pretty sure there was an attempt to add that to the omnibus spending monstrosity and it got shot down. Doubt this attempt makes it out of committee either. One of the great blessings of having my father in my house the last two and a half years of his life was that I got to hear about his childhood . He often couldn't remember recent events but he had very detailed memories of childhood events . My Uncle confirmed many of them . The diaper thing was probably the most difficult. Not because of the mess but dealing with someone I loved dearly and I could see the loss of dignity in his eyes every time. I would do it again without hesitation .

'The vaccine is safe and effective'. Or so the tv ads tell me. Effective? We're on the, what, fourth booster? And the vax doesn't stop transmission. Yeah, real effective. As for safe, we all know why Big Pharma was given immunity on the rushed out clot shot. With mRNA in the clot shots, no one knows what will happen to the vaccinated in five or ten years. So any adverse events in the future will met with an 'Oopsie!'

530 502 Did I mention here (I am sure I did) that my broken bones were healed within hours, not months? I only prayed for strength, not healing. Did not expect the healing.

I know Who did that

He has healed my body, as well. It's shocking, isn't it.
But what He has done for my soul...

The fear and self-loathing bequeathed to me by my mother. The damage my alkie father inflicted. He healed that, too.

This is truth.
It doesn't necessesarily lead to heart-felt love either.
But "honor" isn't the same as love.
I helped nurse my two parents in their final years, moved 1/2 way across the country to do it. Shitty work. But I am commanded to honor, not to feel all gooey-lovey.

I feel for you, SMH. and all the other Morons that have/had shitty parents. But there it is.

With his hearing aids in, Publius Sr. could probably hear a clap of thunder. If it was close.

Without them, he might hear a stick of dynamite go off. Again, if it was close.

You just have to laugh at some of this stuff. It is funny. His eyesight ain't so hot either. In daylight, "glare" is the enemy. Remember, he insists he can drive. I've carried him to a few places in daylight:

"How can you see?! I can't see anything! What's with all this glare!"

Then, Miley and I and both of the folks had gone out to eat and I was driving back home after dark. Daddy is in the front seat. After a bit, he tells me, "You better fix this alternator!"

WTF? I ask him why he thinks that. "Look how dim these lights are! You're gonna run this battery down before we get home! Fix this alternator!"

Daddy was always sort of light sensitive. He did not like a direct light shining in his face. It was funny. When I was a kid, he'd have me hold a work light for him, and I would get pissed if it got in his eyes.

Years later, it was funny. He was holding the light for me on time, and he deliberately shined it in my eyes, you know, to get back and show me. I just kept on going without saying a word. The look on his face was priceless.

To this day, he stumbles around in the dark at night. He refuses to have a light on. Drives him batty -- even a little 4W night light.

Daddy's late night antics are driving my mother crazy. He sleeps all damn day, but then gets all agitated 'cause he can't sleep at night. And pesters my mother to "give him something". The other night, my poor mother said it was like a hurricane blew through the house.

He was rummaging through the kitchen, knocking stuff over. Then he came in her bedroom, tooling around on his walker and started knocking shit over. He "got lost" and she had to lead him back to bed.

His bed and the number of blankets....

He thinks he get cold. He wants, let's see. About 8 blankets total, including two comforters. Big and thick. But in the night, he kicks all that off, and gets it on the floor in the biggest twisted up mess you've ever seen. It's like a puzzle how he does that.

He gets up and tools around. Then he gets back in bed, but can't make any sense of the twisted up covers. So, several times, he tries to get more "blankets". This included towels.

Also, my mother's clothes. One morning, my mother gets up, notes another hurricane as gone through, and then finds him lying there under a pile of towels and her clothes.

582 They consistently go after companies for making "record profits" without actually looking into the fact that they have RECORD EXPENSES as well.

The payroll at my company has gone up by almost 40%. I have the same number of people i did 3 years ago. I just have to pay them more because, well, inflation, labor shortages, etc have increased their costs and their value to the company.

So to say "they have a 90 cent margin on a gallon" without looking into what they're actually NETTING after they use that 90 cents to cover expenses... well, it's so simple that it can't be a mistake.
