THE MORNING RANT: Punching Back Against ICE Vehicle Bans; Yes They’re Coming for Your Gas Stove; A “Conservative” Thinker Is Perplexed By Empty Grocery Shelves

Punching Back Against the Gas-Powered Vehicle Bans

Bravo to the Wyoming lawmakers who introduced legislation to phase out electric vehicles in their state by 2035. It’s a brilliant move to highlight the fact that freedom-lovers must push back as blue states and the federal government roll out bans on gas-powered cars, which are the engine of freedom.

In fact, this Wyoming legislative action is pretty much what I proposed back in 2021.

To Counter Blue State EV Mandates, Red States Need to Start Mandating Gas-Powered Cars [Buck Throckmorton at AOSHQ – 9/27/2021]

It is imperative that Texas, other oil-patch states, and all freedom-loving states (hello Florida) start fighting back. If New York can pass a law mandating that 100% of all new vehicle sales are EVs, then Texas (and Florida, and Tennessee, and Louisiana, etc) can pass laws mandating that no less than xx% - let’s say 90% hypothetically - of all new vehicle sales in their states must be gas-powered vehicles.

The Wyoming legislation is not likely to get passed into law, but it is receiving extensive media coverage.

Wyoming Lawmakers Say They Got What They Wanted With Proposal to Ban EVs [ The Hill – 01/17/2023]

State Sen. Ed Cooper (R), a co-sponsor of the resolution, said in a phone interview that the resolution is meant to show that a ban on gas-powered vehicles is an “assault” on Wyoming’s oil industries and their way of life. He said sponsors got what they wanted by provoking a national conversation about bans on gas-powered vehicles, and that an actual ban on electric vehicles would be “ludicrous.”

“I think the thought of an electric vehicle ban is truly completely ludicrous, but it’s no more ludicrous than a ban on gasoline powered vehicles,” he said.

That is pretty much what I said too. ”In a sane world, consumers in every state would have the freedom of choice to buy whatever types of cars they want. But sanity has been lost, so a mandate to sell gas-powered cars in red states is necessary to ensure that consumers will still have the choice to buy something other than EVs.

But if this new “national conversation” doesn’t get the left to back down on their efforts to ban gasoline-powered vehicles, then we need to ban their precious electric vehicles. They picked this fight. Let them play by their own rules and suffer the consequences.

Yes, They’re Coming for Your Gas Stove

Speaking of the left’s obsession with banning gas-burning consumer goods, there has not been a “walk back” from the left about their desire to ban gas stoves.

After Richard Trumka (Consumer Product Safety Commissioner) proposed a ban on gas stoves, there was the expected outcry from normal Americans, followed by Trumka’s “walk back,” followed by much celebration among the gullible that we had successfully pushed back and that our gas stoves were saved!

Consumer Safety Commission Walks Back Gas-Stove Threat amid Backlash [National Review – 01/11/2023]

No, our gas stoves are not safe. This was the left’s initial salvo to let us know that the process has started that will lead to a prohibition on gas stoves. When new gas stoves are banned by bureaucratic decree in a year or two, we will have been softened up and we won’t even be surprised. After that will come the hard deadline to replace all existing gas stoves, along with a federal assistance program of course.

Our awful media is doing its usual self-contradictory work on behalf of the left, simultaneously arguing that no one is coming for our stoves, while also supporting the proposed ban. Oilfield Rando captured it perfectly, as he so often does.

Erick Erickson Ponders Empty Shelves

I’m not going to beat up on Erick Erickson for his transition from Christian conservative to “police-the-right” scold, I’m going to beat up on those of us on the right who ever thought he had any intellectual heft.

This tweet almost makes me sad in its childish ignorance of economics.

Erickson - why the shortages.JPG

“… so far removed from Covid.”

I’m embarrassed for Mr. Erickson and I’m embarrassed that he ever had any pull in the conservative movement.

Jesse Kelly, a brilliant man who takes immense pride in being a community college dropout, predicted back in spring of 2020 exactly what Mr. Erickson is puzzled about now.

You can’t just cut off “the invisible hand” of economic activity with a lockdown, then allow municipal officials to shut down “nonessential businesses”, then pay millions of people not to work, then attack the fossil fuel industry which provides fertilizer and transportation, and then say, “OK, let’s turn the economy back on,” and then expect shelves to magically be full again.

The functioning economy that was destroyed by our best and brightest had developed over many years to provide services, supplies, labor, transportation, etc at the wages and prices that would keep it all functioning.

Many years of economic evolution led to the bounty of pre-Covid lockdowns. No person could ever design or command the economy to function as it did, but destructive, ignorant politicians had the power to quickly destroy it. And they did.

Communists and Covidians think that shelves get filled when politicians give the command to allow it. So does Mr. Erickson, who is deeply puzzled why the shelves are empty despite our Covidian leaders giving the OK for economic activity to resume again after they had destroyed the economy.

It’s distressing, but shelves are often empty now because the golden goose of free market capitalism was killed by the Covid response. If government stays out of the way, and stops paying people not to work, and stops punishing farming and transportation, etc, etc, the shelves will eventually be full again. Eventually.

But golden geese take a long time to evolve.

How exactly will this matter at all when federal CAFE regulations (and massive fines that come with them if regulations not met for CO2 emissions and average MPG targets) are what drive all automotive company decisions. Unless Wyoming and other states are going to change CAFE standards, these state laws are meaningless.

19 And as I said the other day, states can mandate ICE vehicles all they want. When automakers are no longer making ICE vehicles, the mandates will only serve to punish the citizens of the state who will be unable to buy any new ICE vehicles and will be forced to try to keep old ICE vehicles running longer. Or not be able to drive at all if they cannot keep their ICE vehicles operational.

It won't. Wyoming is a powerless backwater in American politics. It's a real, old-fashioned frontier kind of place and what they do will have no bearing on national policy. It won't be a "national conversation" except for the "national" side of it in the press and other propaganda organs making fun of Wyoming for being so backwards. It will have no bearing on what the big states do.

It might not even have bearing on what Wyoming does. There is no shortage of judges or other operators who will happily declare that WY's action (if it passes) is illegal, but phasing ICE cars is not.

Again, the left is already defacto banning ICE vehicles through ridiculous CAFE standards for CO2 emissions and average mpg targets. They don't need an outright ban. They are banning them without calling it a ban through regulation and massive fines. The biggest of them are set to start in 2025. Which is why all automakers' programs right now are for EVs. And my company has a corporate plan for 50% EV by 2030. Because you have to plan 5 years ahead for development and production of vehicles. Program I am working on now is 26.5MY (model year).

Every week it is something new. The baby formula is under lock and key with a ration of two per customer.
Last week it was cold medicines for both adults and kids. The week before it was cereal. Before that it as flour.

I was thinking it was just due to a shortage of workers to keep the shelves stocked. But now, I agree with Buck. It runs deeper than that. And it isn't going away.

COVID is a part of it and 2020 was a revolutionary year. The debt is larded up and the globalist system is beginning to fracture. We've spent 40 years building that globalist system, and we are dependent on its inputs. A stoppage in China or reduced output in Germany or export controls in Indonesia have tremendous consequences and they cascade through the highly efficient but also very brittle system. The longer the supply chain, the worse off you are.

The realignment back to regionalism - which I do think is going on - is going to be brutal. That inflation we deferred through globalization is back and will be back for some time. The supply chains we outsourced for thirty years will have to be remade. The Postwar order is ending.

I am deeply concerned about that problem. When transformers blow up and there's a power outage lasting for a week or more, something is desperately wrong.

My fear is that the warehouses are increasingly bare. Not every utility company necessarily has adequate spare parts, but they can be obtained by borrowing or buying from other companies. Until recently, apparently. That's worrying for me. I wonder how much of our infrastructure parts supply chain depends on Chinese or other Far East manufacturing or German manufacturing. Have we been eating up inventory for three years and now we're in trouble with no means to effectively replace it at required scale?

I don't know. It does give me the willies, though.

The next step, of course, is to advocate supplying nuclear weapons to Ukraine now.

At least during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the foreign policy leadership of this country realized that there was a serious risk of nuclear war, and tried to avoid it.

Now, with the risk of nuclear war arguably higher than sixty years ago, you have a significant fraction of the American foreign policy establishment denying that there is any risk of nuclear war at all, so we can continue to escalate the war without consequence.

1) Restrict EVs to no more than 2%(or less) of the current vehicles in Texas, because -

we have neither the electrical generating ability or the grid capacity to support what a massive increase in EVs would entail.

2) Link the number of EVs allowed to the building of new completed nuclear power plants*, say 6-8 statewide, and the bulking up of "dumb" grid capacity independent of any linkage out of state.

3) Set the maximum number of allowed EVs at 5-10% of the power generating and grid capacity beginning in 2035 if and only if it can be demonstrated that this number of EVs cannot cause overload or grid failure during high stress times like very low or very high temperatures.

4) Pass a law allowing all CO2tards to be kicked in the nuts or cuntpunted whenever and wherever they open their pinholes regarding climate or...well, anything. Even their favorite M&Ms color.

*NG or coal plants would be fine as well, but CO2tards heads would explode.

149 EVs are getting what market share they have as much by government contract as by private sales.
Only government is big enough to do something totally stupid and make it appear to work, so it creates the market for EVs by greasing state and local governments into buying fleets of these things, which creates the idea in the public that there is a market for these things.

Take out the government contracts.
Take out the government tax credit and rebates.

Where's the market for an EV?

150 I wonder how much of our infrastructure parts supply chain depends on Chinese or other Far East manufacturing or German manufacturing. Have we been eating up inventory for three years and now we're in trouble with no means to effectively replace it at required scale?

Electrical substations don't break often on their own. Therefore, replacement parts are 6+ months out.

When substations are broken on purpose, it doesn't take much to empty what's on the shelf.

152 “I think the thought of an electric vehicle ban is truly completely ludicrous, but it’s no more ludicrous than a ban on gasoline powered vehicles,” he said.

I don't consider a ban on EV cars ludicrous - unless you can prove that you are charging your car off-grid. (home version of wind, solar, petrol powered generator, etc)

The reasoning is that EV car fires require more training and equipment from emergency services, the grid needs to be bolstered for intermittent high-demand, EVs are typically heavier, the batteries need to be disposed of (usually locally so this is a burden on local waste management).

All of these things listed are socialized costs for the privatized benefits of the EV owner. That is, YOU through higher taxes, fees and rates are subsidizing the true economic costs added to infrastructure from EV integration.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a stock of electrical transformers.

Last summer, the Pacific Northwest nearly ran out of chlorine (needed to purify water supplies), because the local chlorine plant had its transformer blow, and couldn't quickly replace it, when some other chlorine plants across the country were down.

Worrisome.

Stuff like this is inevitable once you disconnect the patient as direct payor for medical care. The doctor-patient relationship is an agency relationship (meaning the doctor is your agent with all the constraints an agency relationship imposes) when you are paying him. But when you aren't, he's no longer working for you. He doesn't cease to be an agent; he's just someone else's agent. Your doctor really isn't loyal to you, the patient, anymore. And why would he be? Because of a an old Greek oath?

It's like he lives in a bubble, and took a walk around and was astonished. To build on what was said. Yes the COVID lockdowns gave our economy a grievous wound. But as the black knight would say, "it's just a flesh wound" and the strong American economy fought its way back. Though now weakened and need of years of stable times to recover fully.

Instead what we got is a bird flu pandemic wiping out egg producing chickens either directly, or by necessary culling, a war in one of the largest wheat producing countries on earth, shipping crisis affected by a shortage of truck drivers, and a general labor crisis, the final two feed forward from COVID lockdowns.

And looky lu, we have shortages, of eggs, milk, and flour. An economy which in its strength would have simply compensated for crisis with a meaty invisible hand and a slight price increase as opportunity met entrepreneur, now in weakness cannot and so problems now create shortages, instead of a small bump in price.

Like influenza in general, bird flu viruses are tricky bastards even down to being carried around by visitors to farms, wild birds, contaminate equipment, and so on.

Birds though in confined houses where most of our egg supply comes from and also broilers (aka eating chicken), are essentially large incubators for the disease.

Same as feedlots and cattle if hoof and mouth disease starts in.

Eggs are a health benefit. They affect the production of many prepared meals and bakery products; the operation of restuarants, diners and delis; sales and prices in markets, etc. They're the perfect food to control and tax. (Maybe along the line of what OxFam is hoping for through the WEF - not just oil but food, and eggs and egg-related products could be a good start.)

291 The only answer to the fiscal crisis will be that the federal government just stop entire programs, departments, and agencies. The Democrats will proclaim it as a win that they got a transition period instead of them being defunded altogether.

Asset sales will be on the table, the biggest and fattest of which will be the Treasury's student loan portfolio that can be easily sold to Wall Street. The easiest programs to shut down will be those that are being administered primarily by the states anyway, like Medicaid, housing, and TNF (welfare). Some states will maintain benefit levels and some won't.

I disagree. There is no fiscal crisis, unless the green's win the environmental wars. At which point all the money men go broke. SO the green's will not be allowed to win.

The US absorbs so much foreign capital, and has the only currency which can act as a global measure of trade that there will not be a fiscal crisis. And our leading idiots in govt know this, so they will continue to take their 10% off the top. And do nothing.

Eggs are used in a wide variety of products as well as for consumers plus you have new state regulations raising prices (also see pork increases as well).

The demand on it is usually inelastic which means that eggs run from incredibly cheap protein to very expensive depending on the supply curve at any given moment. Like most farm products, the prices of inputs must also be reflected which in the case of eggs consist of feed (about 75-80 percent of cost), labor about 10-20 percent (more for cageless), and then various other inputs.

310 I was reading an article about the new Prius, and was surprised at how much sales for the model had plummeted. They used to sell 200,000+ in the States, and last year they sold less than 35,000. Even for the new one, a mere 35,000 is the sales target.

You can get a version of the Prius hybrid system in nearly everything Toyota makes now, so it didn't have a lot of a purpose by itself. The media was calling for it to be an EV so it was something at least relatively unique again, but their CEO Akio Toyoda isn't biting.

having fewer kids.

Let your country, cultural, family collapse to make the WEF and Schwab and Soros happy!

The WEFthrall was very much against getting rid of the laws that make it hard for couples to have children

and against making laws that encourage those who want kids (and it's the majority of people) to have children.

The evil of these people is worldwide.

As ridiculous as Schwab, Soros and the rest of the WEF and their thralls seem. They are deadly serious.

And our leading idiots in govt know this, so they will continue to take their 10% off the top. And do nothing. Posted by: Black JEM at January 23, 2023 11:56 AM (UVyKP)

True, but the foreign capital hasn't been enough since Obama. The only thing that has been propping up the Treasury for the past decade plus is the Fed printing money and buying the Treasury debt (monetizing the deficit, which has become structural). The Minneapolis Fed has done some tough numbers about debt service and they've published it. There is a limit to how long that can go on, and we are damned close to it.

Wiring in Victorian buildings often had paper or fabric insulation. Was often out in very haphazardly as well. And then there's aluminum wiring from the 60s or 70s that caused a lot of house fires as well. I heard a rumor recently that they're allowing aluminum again. Hope that's incorrect.

360 Corn only is not particularly a good feed for chickens--you need some sort of protein in it--bugs/worms for example but not always in season, soybean meal, (can't remember whether cottonseed meal is suitable or not), fish meal, or some other animal byproduct, and a source of calcium for the shells.

I get along fine with the Amish when I have dealt with them. They are generally a moral people. But hold on to your wallet, because they are very shrewd bargainers.

You seem upset. The Amish also refused the Vax. They share the same cup at Communion, and spread it around, took their losses and now they are over it. They accepted it for what it was, and now have that magical "herd immunity" that we keep hearing about.
A lot of Amish also work as contractors and sub-contractors in the building trades, and that's where you see the lack of observing child labor laws creep in. It's not about farm labor, it's about other commercial work that they do.

One source for bugs and grubs is a compost heap. Black Soldier Fly maggots and red wriggler worms, both. Also food scraps.
One of the options is to do a lacto-ferment of some of the feed, and in the summer you can sprout your corn before feeding it the birds, they like the extra green and the roots

my experience with the Amish is that they are very real. They run a farmer's market, Booth's Corner, basicallly one Amish family runs all the stands. Wouldn't anyone there be able to suss out who the IMPOSTOR was?

And there is a pet store there that sells puppies that come from puppy mills and they do a brisk business and nobody gaf about it at all.

And I applaud them for refusing the vaxx. They don't have the incidence of autism in their ranks, some attribute this lack of autism to the Amish refusal to jab their babies.

So as you can see, I am not the leader of the Anti-Amish jihad that some moron here believes I am.

I don't know what you think I'm joking about. It's true that the Amish around here are very wealthy. They get exemptions from fees, insurance, etc. that the "English" do not. It's true that I was defrauded by one of them, and it's true that their contractors are exempt from workman's comp.

So I don't know why you think I'm joking and I don't see how you are making a great leap about Jew-hate.

Are you Amish? Fine. Make a hundred bad taste jokes about Italians, talk about how some dago defrauded you and then we're even.

378 Amish America dot com: Amish exemptions
Amish do receive an exemption from Social Security, signing away the right to receive Social Security benefits in the process. Amish were granted exemption from participation in Social Security in recognition of the fact that Amish communities care for their old and infirm. Amish also consider programs such as Social Security to be insurance programs, which contradict Amish beliefs against participating in commercial insurance.

Though they are generally exempted from Social Security, in some cases Amish may in fact be required to pay Social Security taxes. This may happen when working for a business that is of mixed Amish and non-Amish ownership. Amish business owners are also required to pay Social Security taxes when employing non-Amish workers, or Amish youth that have not yet been baptized in the church.

In some states Amish are also exempt from participating in Worker’s Compensation insurance programs as well. Amish employers and the community typically help to take care of the injured and sick as well as their families.

There are also differences between Menonites & Amish.
