The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

One of the many glories of Western culture has been the transition from a brutal world in which the value of a human life is measured in sacks of corn or a goat, to one in which the individual -- the most basic unit of society -- has intrinsic value and an immutable place in the structure of the culture. Yes (as the many detractors of Western culture will scream), it is not perfect. The road has been bloody, as a cursory reading of recent history will show, and it is still incomplete, as the abortionists prove; we still do not see all life as having value.

But compared to non-Western culture it is a very different and better world.

The "One Child" policy of communist China has been well documented by the western media, but they have sanitized it to a degree that is shocking. This is the same power structure that is currently running China, so any protestations from the apologists of communist/socialist brutality and inhumanity that this was a long time ago ring hollow.

The Hundred Childless Days

Thirty years ago, Guan County, Shandong Province launched the “Hundred Childless Days” campaign under the aegis of national family planning, known in the West as the “one-child policy.” The birthplace of the “Boxers” was deemed to have too high a birth rate by the provincial government. County officials sought to correct this by ensuring that not a single baby was born between May 1 and August 10, 1991. As local accounts attest, authorities in the area went to extraordinarily inhumane lengths to be the “best” at reproducing the least.

In what some locals called “the slaughter of the lambs,” women across Guan County were rounded up for forced abortions or induction of labor; one local official claims that these “procedures” were sometimes no more than a kick in the stomach from an out-of-town mercenary. Children who did make it into the world were reportedly strangled, and their bodies tossed into open pits. The families of pregnant women were publicly shamed in reprises of the Cultural Revolution.

Under the one-child policy, local officials in China were responsible for implementing broad guidelines from the central government about family planning quotas, leaving little oversight of how localities reached their target birth rates. In some extreme cases, such as in Guan County, this led to gruesome abuses. While the “one-child policy” was loosened to a two-child policy in 2015, its lingering effects will only be felt more acutely in the coming years. As China’s population ages and may be shrinking, the economic and social repercussions wrought by a generation of curtailed births are only just beginning to sting.

Read the whole thing. It is a perfect encapsulation of socialism, and a damning indictment of its fellow travelers in America, because this is exactly what we can look forward to if we do not push back with every means available against the encroachment of this horrid communitarian mindset that will lead inexorably to death on a scale that we have seen only at the hands of...socialism!

The current Chinese dictators are using very similar policies to try (and fail) to control the spread of Wuhan Flu. In fact, brutality is the first step in most of their policies, and they have bought off the Chinese people with prosperity. But that is tenuous today, and may very well crash back to levels China has not seen in a generation. Their demographic calamity has already occurred, and there is nothing that can be done to repair the damage.

China faces a series of awful decisions in the next generation, and while it is delightful to see, the repercussions will be felt world wide.

Does anyone doubt that their traditional brutality will not be used to minimize the effects of these decisions on their ruling class?

8 It's gratifying to see the Chinese system failing bigly, but they are not the only ones facing demographic collapse. Every developed nation is below replacement, including us, and India. The world will have to learn how to achieve a soft landing as the population diminishes. An even bigger issue is at what point does the population stabilize, or was Children of Men prophetic?

Not for the next 40-50 years, no. The only hope of the system in Red China is that they can survive - somehow - long enough to bring up another much-larger generation. The problem with that is how to do it. How do they get people to have kids? There are various things they could try, but their entire structure is designed against it. Chinese-style urbanism, for example, is not conducive to large families.

China is probably done for as a global power. Their population will shrink by at least a third (probably more) within thirty years, and it's increasingly old.

This may seem like a non-sequitur, but have you ever read the SM Stirling T2 books? One of the biggest allies of Skynet's rise to power is human environmentalists who want a completely unspoiled, virgin wilderness- that they are allowed to enjoy before the human race goes extinct because they have no plans to have children.

It seemed insane, but plausible, when the books were written. More plausible now.

Of course, Skynet merely uses them to accomplish it's ends- it does not give a fuck about the environment and these asshats are one of the first thrown in it's work/extermination camps.

China is not immediately collapsing. They are set up for an inevitable collapse within the next century, as are we. They've still got some upwards momentum before peaking. We already peaked sometime in the last 20 years.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at January 24, 2023 11:12 AM (eYoxG)

37 Prosperity is the best, and most effective population control. If you're in a poor country or area, you have a lot of kids because you don't know how many will survive to adulthood. If you're in a rich area, it's too expensive to have too many kids.

Demographic collapse is a real thing, but even then we should find an equilibrium replacement level eventually. Problem, of course, is that government doesn't have the will or the brains to come up with a solution beyond throwing granny off the cliff.

Not even close. We are in demographic trouble, especially in the Millennial generation (Millennials don't have enough kids), but we're nowhere near the levels of guaranteed catastrophe. China is much, much, much worse off. Our fertility rate is moving the wrong direction and is getting down into the irreversible danger zone, but we're not there yet and we were out of the danger zone as recently as 2017. There's hope for us. There's hope for France. There is no hope for China or Germany, not inside of thirty years. Brazil is in the danger zone.

Our fertility rate is too low, hitting 1.6 in 2020. Danger zone. Big time. Red China's is 1.3 and has been under 1.8 for most of the past thirty years - assuming that the CCP isn't lying about the figures.

We're in demographic trouble. They're in demographic catastrophe.

Personally, I'd like a planetary pop of about 3B, but the problem is achieving equilibrium once you reach it. 70 I suspect if the Dims remain in power over the next 2-4 election cycles, we'll get a chance to see our very own, made in the USA, One Child Policy.

The tea leaves are already out there.

In totally unrelated articles, things like movie reviews, you can already see the writer/reviewer praising the responsible couples 'who choose not to have children." because, you know, the planet is dying.

Reviewers have started praising film-makers for including characters and couples who choose or refuse to have children. You see the fake(???) news that guys are getting vasectomies to support women who want abortions but "can't" get one.

Also, "babies? Yuck, they just chain you down!" is another popular thing for women characters to say.

Right now, the progtards are saying choice, and if someone chooses not to have children...well, that's just fine. If maybe weird to want to hop out of the Darwinian game.

Bu-u-u-u-ut, as we know, soon you irresponsible people having children will need to be forced to "to do what's right for the planet, and for those wonderful people who wish to "save" it.

Think vax and masks. It's coming.

China's rise was huge win in certain respects and for certain people. For the top-level financiers and business owners, it has been pretty good. It has allowed inflation to remain fairly low. It has had tremendous downsides, especially for the real economy and labor force in this country.

But Bill Gates is a fool. China is yesterday's news. They can't sustain. Anyone broadly betting on China today is going to lose. China will be replaced, and not as a single unit. Look to places like India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Mexico and Argentina in the developing world and places like the US, Canada, France, possibly Australia in the developed world.

this. People have a weird evo bio neurosis about running out of food/resources. People make stuff, grow stuff, invent stuff. More people is not a bad thing. Its burned into our genes they are, because we spent a long time hunter gathering. People are not just demand, they are also supply. This often leads true neurotics to propose something like Logan's run or quality value years. The world got here without you controlling it, there is an invisible hand at work in createing resources, improving outputs and distributing. The main problem in countries with significant hunger is institutionalized corruption. Its not climate or resources. So in way, people are the problem, but its not the people they think.

China's power is based on economics and they cannot sustain their economy on their population, nor can they produce enough to be an export engine. And that export engine gets harder to run if globalization retreats, which it looks like it is doing (though whether that's short-term due to shortages and the Ukraine war or longer-term remains to be seen).

Functionally equity and debt as part of a capital structure are not all that different and can be structured to resemble each other.

For example the Muslims do adhere to this strict definition of usury, but have effectively entered banking through structuring.

If we need to restructure all debt as equity to meet a technical definition we could, but that it could be done without really changing how things work seems to show the technical definition is not the real issue.

Looting its neighbors and bringing the women home for wives is a possibility, but the problem is timing. China is in for a very, very rough 30-50 years of population decline, even if they start baby-making at a high rate right now. It takes 20 years before those new people start being productive.

Then she saw the answer; she saw the secret premise behind their words. With all of their noisy devotion to the age of science, their hysterically technological jargon, their cyclotrons, their sound rays, these men were moved forward, not by the image of an industrial skyline, but by the vision of that form of existence which the industrialists had swept away—the vision of a fat, unhygienic rajah of India, with vacant eyes staring in indolent stupor out of stagnant layers of flesh, with nothing to do but run precious gems through his fingers and, once in a while, stick a knife into the body of a starved, toil-dazed, germ-eaten creature, as a claim to a few grains of the creature's rice, then claim it from hundreds of millions of such creatures and thus let the rice grains gather into gems.

She,born of the industrial revolution, had not held as conceivable, had forgotten along with the tales of astrology and alchemy, what these men knew in their secret, furtive souls, knew not by means of thought, but by means of that nameless muck which they called their instincts and emotions: that so long as men struggle to stay alive, they'll never produce so little but that the man with the club won't be able to seize it and leave them still less, provided millions of them are willing to submit—that the harder their work and the less their gain, the more submissive the fiber of their spirit—that men who live by pulling levers at an electric switchboard, are not easily ruled, but men who live by digging the soil with their naked fingers, are—that the feudal baron did not need electronic factories in order to drink his brains away out of jeweled goblets, and neither did the rajahs of the People's State of India.

Some years ago I walked around my neighborhood, in suburban Cook County, so while I'm on a half acre, there are plenty of multistory houses on a full or two in the area. And schools and hospitals, and most of what one might regularly need. And a golf course, which is a massive waste of space for this consideration.

Anyway, I did some calculations when I got home, and found that the entire (6B at the time) population of the planet could fit in the continental US (in single family homes, no apartments, condos required) with all the rest of the space for farming and whatever.

We are nowhere near overpopulated.

The population collapse of the pagan Romans doesn't seem terribly related. The connection to sexual sin and collapse of marriage seems more transparent there.

The origin of a mortgage structure is to not technically be a debt with interest. Which goes to the issue that under a strict definition of "charging interest" the difference between usury and non-usury is merely a technicality. The payments and ownership interests can be exactly the same with one being usury and the other not, technically speaking.

279 You don't get debt without it. Nobody risks his capital without a reward. Even in the Muslim world where interest is illegal, they still charge it, albeit under a different structure (usually profit-sharing with the lender, rather than interest on the money itself).
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 24, 2023 11:47 AM (t0OGg)

This is the common position. You would get less debt overall perhaps. And perhaps less economic activity. I doubt it.

But certainly economic activity would look very different.

I do not think the economic activity of today is worthwhile.

An interesting thought experiment is to ask what economic activity looks like under decreasing amounts of loan servicing.

Or, to ask the same thing, what kind of economic activity does a usurer prefer?

"She is already used to her hip being "off" of the pelvis, and her muscles are used to this defective position. Now that she has a new hip that is in the correct position, her muscles need time to learn their new normal.

So now the plan is to do a revision surgery, probably in about a week. An appliance with a larger ball will be installed and the "stem" will be lengthened so that her muscles can be stretched into the new position. The surgeons are already working on a plan, and we are in complete agreement with their proposal."

We can totally make this change without excessive cost or fuss. I just don't think it's likely to have a real impact since it's mostly futzing with language in contracts.

International Financial Corporations literally believe equity and debt are transparent to one another. It's a bedrock financial theory. It doesn't really matter to them whether it's called interest or rents(both are taxed as ordinary income at any rate). They operate in Islamic territories too, so it's not that big a deal if paperwork needs to align with those requirements. Operationally things remain the same.

408 If we were to use a mortgage as an example.

Rents + layaway on the home + payments for an option on the home's value

changes things so that the bank technically owns your home, you still get the appreciation as now, and you're making the same payments. Technically you're paying rent now instead of interest but nothing has changed.

I do not deny any of this. The relationship btwn the parties is not changed. The issue is the relationship. Interest after all signifying a relationship between the parties.

There is a transfer of something. There is a return of something (is it the same something) there is also an additional return.

The traditional opinion (until very very recently) has been when "money" is that something any return to the lender beyond the "amount" lent is unwarranted and has dysgenic effects.

Perhaps this was a world wide delusion.

Perhaps Financial Institutions don't lend "money" to ppl at interest anymore?

Perhaps they never really did and only thought they were?
