THE MORNING RANT: Periodic Update on the Electric Vehicle Follies (01/16/2023)

EV Fire - Pennsylvania.JPG

It’s been a little while since we’ve checked in on the ongoing electric vehicle follies, so let’s see what’s going on.

*****

First off, a volunteer firefighter who reads Ace of Spades (“Danimal28” recently wrote me about training he just took on how to deal with the growing frequency of EV fires, which require extraordinary amounts of water to douse, and which burn much hotter than gas-powered cars.

Hey Buck,

As a volunteer firefighter I just took a class on how to handle EVs on fire.

1) Let it burn. It will take 10K gallons of water and four hours to mitigate.
2) Buy a $35K device to slide under vehicle which punctures battery cells and inserts water to mitigate fire under less than a half hour.

Key highlights:

1) If the batteries' relatively fragile cell barriers become damaged during an accident the fire will commence.
2) White smoke will emanate from the bottom of the vehicle which means you need to vacate the area immediately.
3) Once fire happens it can burn up to 6,000 degrees and flames can shoot out up to 20 feet per side of the vehicle.

Now imagine me approaching a vehicle with white smoke emanating from below to insert the puncture device, pondering when flames might shoot out a heat that will burn through my turnout gear... Ain't gonna happen, brother.

Yikes. Stay Safe Danimal.

As for me, I am going to continue to practice social distancing from EVs.

*****

We’ve spent plenty of time here talking about the executives at Ford and General Motors, who are willing to destroy their companies in a race to go all-electric, despite a lack of commensurate EV demand from their customer bases.

Are all auto companies run by hapless idealogues like those at GM and Ford? No.

Toyota Chief Says ‘Silent Majority’ Has Doubts About Pursuing Only EVs [WSJ – 12/18/2022]

President Akio Toyoda said he is among the auto industry’s silent majority in questioning whether electric vehicles should be pursued exclusively, comments that reflect a growing uneasiness about how quickly car companies can transition.

Let me translate the second half of that sentence from agenda-driven, left-wing journalism to reality. Mr. Toyoda doesn’t have “uneasiness about how quickly car companies can transition” to all-electric. He almost certainly knows that it will not happen, and that it cannot happen.

“Because the right answer is still unclear, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just one option,” Mr. Toyoda said. Over the past few years, Mr. Toyoda said, he has tried to convey this point to industry stakeholders, including government officials—an effort he described as tiring at times.

Stating that unicorns don’t exist shouldn’t be considered brave, but in a crazy world where denying the inevitability of a unicorn-based economy can be career-ending, Mr. Toyoda is very brave. Sadly, too many of the silent majority of EV skeptics at auto companies remain willing to steer their companies into the ditch out of career self-preservation, rather than boldly defend their core product and customers against the green authoritarians.

VW in Ditch.JPG

Speaking of car companies driving themselves into a ditch in pursuit of the glorious all-EV future…

Volkswagen’s US sales collapsed in 2022 after it announced that it aspires primarily to be an EV company by 2030, even here in the states.

Overall VW sales in the US fell by approximately 75,000 units in 2022 compared to 2021, while its EV sales increased by a whopping 3,769 units year over year.

Volkswagen of America 2022 Sales Numbers Released: 22.5% More EVs but 19.7% Overall Drop [AutoEvolution – 01/06/2023]

[VW of America] reported 2022 sales of 301,069 vehicles for the twelve-month period. The figure is a massive 19.7% decrease from 2021.

The all-electric ID.4 numbers increased 22.5% from 16,742 vehicles in 2021 to 20,511 in 2022 and represented 6.8% of total sales.

I love this next line about VW’s sales implosion reflecting that it is in a “transitory” phase as it works to go all-electric.

The dismal results for 2022 fully explain why the company was reluctant to provide a forecast for U.S. sales earlier in the year. However, they also may be transitory as the automaker forges on into the all-electric age.

Yes, you can call it “transitory” if an auto company is transitioning from a high-volume producer of vehicles people want to purchase, into a boutique producer of niche cars. You can also call it corporate suicide.

Perhaps the funniest part of VW’s sales collapse is how it’s reported by EV fanboys.

Volkswagen ID.4 Was 14% Of Volkswagen USA Sales In 4th Quarter [CleanTechnica – 01/13/2023]

What this update actually reinforces is the point that Volkswagen electric vehicle (ID.4) sales are increasing in share quickly. They go from 6.8% across the full year to 14% in the 4th quarter to 18% in December, indicating a clear trend toward more and more electrification.

Yes, Volkswagen’s EV sales are increasing in percentage share quickly, because the denominator in this equation is VW’s total vehicle sales, which are in free fall.

*****

So how is Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s EV boondoggle coming along? Let’s check on Rivian.

Uh oh.

Mercedes and Rivian announced a partnership in September 2022, and it lasted all of three months.

Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian move to partner on electric van production [Rivian press release - 9/08/2022]

Rivian and Mercedes Put Electric Van Joint Venture on Hold [Car and Driver – 12/12/2022]

The EV startup and German automaker will no longer work together on a joint venture to build electric vans, pausing the project just three months after it was first announced.

It’s funny how these partnerships between established auto manufacturers and EV start-ups keep breaking up. It’s really funny when it happens this quickly. Good job, auto executives! Great due diligence.

Meanwhile, corporate headquarters at Rivian doesn’t sound like a fun place to work…

Several top Rivian executives depart the electric vehicle startup [Fox Business – 01/10/2023]

Several top executives at Rivian Automotive Inc., including the vice president overseeing body engineering and its head of supply chain, have left the EV startup in recent months, as the company exits a year in which it fell short of its production targets.

That doesn’t sound good. But how are its investors doing?

Rivian’s stock has also tumbled since its blockbuster initial public offering in November 2021, down roughly 79% through Tuesday’s close.

Oh well. An eco-fool and his money are soon parted.

*****

Speaking of the eco-foolish, they really don’t understand what goes into making their “green” cars do they?

Almost 400 new mines needed to meet future EV battery demand, data finds

EV Mine - 400 needed.JPG

OK, so we’ll need several hundred more mines to produce all the lithium, cobalt, graphite, and nickel needed to fuel the “green” EVs (which are generally powered by coal and gas-fired electricity)…

…just so long as the mines are far, far away - preferably in Asia or Africa. That’s the green thing to do. Strip mining America for those rare earth elements would be racist and environmentally unfriendly.

The fate of America's largest lithium mine is in a federal judge's hands [NPR – 01.06.2023]

The fate of the largest planned lithium mine in the United States is now in the hands of a federal judge who hopes to issue a ruling in a long-running legal battle in the next two months.

The proposed mine on Thacker Pass, a remote slice of federal land near Nevada's border with Oregon, is seen as key toward boosting domestic electric vehicle production. But a group of West Coast Native American tribes considers the land sacred and are suing to stop it.

*****

Did you ever wonder what would happen when the first big wave of electric vehicles hits the used car market? Apparently EVs are like wedding rings. They cost a lot upfront, but aren’t worth much when the relationship ends.

Used electric car prices: why are second-hand EV values falling for Tesla, Audi and Jaguar? [National World – 01/10/2023]

The price of used Teslas has fallen significantly in recent months as buyers shy away from second-hand electric cars.

Experts say [Tesla’s] over-saturation of the market could be to blame as three of its models were among the five EVs with the worst depreciation over the last 12 months.

Chris Plumb, valuations expert at Cap HPI said that while new electric car sales continued to grow and overall used prices [on gas-powered vehicles] remained solid, used EV prices were contracting, with premium models suffering the biggest drops in value.

Also contributing to the collapse in used EV prices is the fact that Tesla is having to slash the prices of its new cars to get them sold.

Tesla drastically lowers EV pricing in the US and Europe [01/13/2023]

The Model Y Long Range sees a huge $20,500 drop including the Federal Tax Credit.

Buying a used EV is a scary idea in the first place, because the entire car only has about a 10-year useful life. After that it might as well be a (toxic) boat anchor due to the prohibitive cost of replacing the battery.

If you own a Tesla and hoped to sell or trade it in soon, this is really bad news. I feel bad for auto dealers who have recently taken Teslas in trade, as their value is in absolute free fall.

Car Dealership Tesla Guy - Tesla Hot Potato.JPG

Car Dealership Tesla Guy - Discounted 16,095.JPG

Car Dealer Guy - Carvana - Carmax.JPG

Tesla’s stock price is crashing too, down 68% from its 52-week high. Taking a bath on every off-lease unit running through auction won’t help.

*****

Enough about EVs. Let’s conclude today’s visit by riding along in a gas-powered, carbureted Hot Rod Lincoln.

Have a great week.

In Europe they are starting to use a strategy of deploying a dumpster that has doors where they can push the burning vehicle into the dumpster and haul it away to a spot where they can let it burn.

29 An examination of the amounts of materials to make all the wonderful EVs shows that we will need lots and lots of additional child labor to mine the cobalt and nickel required. And, that's just the beginning.

Likewise, there is the required electricity that usually has a multi-decade lead time.

I doubt it's the EV announcement or even the EV focus that's doing it. It could be a factor, I just sort of doubt it's the primary one. 2030 is a long way off. Most people probably wouldn't be put off buying a Volkswagen today because of something that might happen 6-10 years from now, even if they disagree with the direction.

How's VW's availability been? Of all the major global car firms, VW is the most dependent on China for supply lines. The American automakers are behind them, and the Japanese have the least dependence. How much of the sales decline is because they can't get finished cars into the dealerships?

93 June 22, 2022:

Today, a typical EV battery weighs one thousand pounds. It contains twenty-five pounds of lithium, sixty pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds cobalt, 200 pounds of copper, and 400 pounds of aluminium, steel, and plastic. Inside are over 6,000 individual lithium-ion cells.

It should concern you that all those toxic components come from mining. For instance, to manufacture each EV auto battery, you must process 25,000 pounds of brine for the lithium, 30,000 pounds of ore for the cobalt, 5,000 pounds of ore for the nickel, and 25,000 pounds of ore for copper. All told, you dig up 500,000 pounds of the earth’s crust for just one battery.

Green + child slavery + NIMBY it is a ignorant, naive, and stupid leftist's dream!

128 When I worked production at a major chemical company and took their fire training, the thing I remember most about metal fires (e.g., Magnesium, and I suspect the Lithium fires from EV's) is that they can burn hot enough to disassociate water into hydrogen and oxygen, and thus make your water spray part of the fire's fuel. So unless you can flood it very quickly with large volumes, just spraying water on a fire that hot can just make the fire worse.

To that end, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has now developed a video game in which the fun never stops: players can stop “a white woman from the Midwest” from harassing a hijabed Muslim from Malaysia on an airplane. Want to become a fearless crusader against pandemic (indeed, systemic) white racism? “On the Plane” is the game for you. ...

The US produced 134.83 billion gallons of gasoline in 2021. (EIA figure)

Converting the two statements above into how many kWatts are in 134.83 billion gallons of gasoline gives:

4544 billion kWatts of energy contained in that 2021 gasoline.

The electrical grid in 2021 produced 4108 billion kWatts of electricity. (EIA figure.)

So the amount of energy in 2021 from gasoline was about 10% more than what the grid produced, distributed, and consumed in 2021.

I still wonder about the trade off: You make a diesel generator motor as light as possible. Use diesel to power electric motors.

Pros: Electric performance.

It seems like it would be a way to square the circle as a purpose built generator would be more efficient than a standard car engine at producing electricity, but I dunno. If it were that easy, you'd think someone would have tried it already, so there must be something about it that does not work.

I seem to recall AOP saying that certain trains function this way, but that it does not scale down well.

No. It isn't. First of all, they are shooting you with something that's designed on a spike protein that is over 2 years old. They did try to mix in a little variation, but even that one is over 18 months behind the curve. Even if it did work as a vaccine, there would be zero reason to think that it would be efficacious now - years later. Do they redesign the flu shot every year or not? There are multiple other reasons to not get the shots which I won't mention. You are literally doing nothing to help yourself at this point with boosters. NOTHING. STOP IT. The downside risk is AT BEST unknowable. AT Best. There is a lot of data coming out that there are significant downsides to multiple boosters.

270 93 June 22, 2022:

Thanks Danimal. My brother is a fireman and is going through the same training and updates. He also mentioned the little scooters with lithium batteries that are popular with the metro crowd are a problem. They risk theft if they leave them outside, so they bring them into their apartments. Spontaneous fires are breaking out as a result, and while not as intense due to the battery size they go from ignition to fully engaged quick. GM is going through a bit of a bother with the Volts:
tinyurl.com/mr49h8jx

My last thought on this is what happens when the batteries are junked. Currently can't be recycled and not enough vehicles have hit their batteries end of life state yet. Will make those decades long junk tire fires look like a weenie roast

The facts he was posting both amount the enormous increase in the amount of mined materials that would be necessary to replace ICE vehicles with EVs along with the resulting environmental damage caused by the mining was staggering and basically proved it is impossible for the world to completely move to EVs.

I assume that thread will make its wy here at some point. It is really good information.

309 1.) The prices of all used cars is plummeting right now. This is hardly a phenomenon unique to Tesla, or to EVs.

2.) The reality behind EVs is that with the current technology, we likely couldn't meet the demand for raw materials required to make it work, so i honestly think that the reservations that these auto makers have re: switching over everything is real.

3.) EVs still aren't a bad idea, or a dead technology. I think that they have, and will continue to have, their application. However, there's really likely no way we could conceivably switch everything over to EV without a discovery of massive quantities of raw materials. Especially a discovery of those materials is a geopolitically stable region of the globe.

4.) The alternative isn't clear. Assuming we continue to desire to get off of fossil fuels, we're still sort of stuck in a pretty rough spot for replacing them. I wonder if maybe the solution might come in the form of decentralized nuclear generation some day if we ever get past our irrational fear of nuke energy.

314 EVs sound like a really good idea until you pop the hood and look underneath, just like wind mills. The frame isn't so bad, it's what's inside that frame. It takes an ungodly amount of rare earth metals to make those batteries, and the U.S. is just too sanctimonious to dig those mines. So we off shore procurement to China which a) doesn't give a damn about greenie scrap except the green of U.S. currency, and b) has the vast majority of those rare earth metals, allowing it to set the price at whatever it chooses. Say Xi's breakfast doesn't agree with him, the price goes up 25%. And, at best, those batteries only last about ten years if they don't blow up first. Replacing those batteries costs just about as much as the original cost of the car. They're like computer printers: it's cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the print cartridges. And no one has yet to explain where the electricity is coming from to charge up the EVs. A couple weeks back, here in Nebraska, the temperature, including wind chill was in the minus 30s. Come summer, we have stretches of 90 plus ungodly humidity. I'm not sacrificing my AC or heater so some holier-than-thou greenie can virtue signal.

I'm guessing Mercedes realized that these people have no clue what they were doing, and were just hoping to have others actually create their car.

326 People buy EV's to fill the vacant hole in their boring, humdrum lives and to give it meaning.

Its a lot of reasons but as I understand it, these are the main ones:

1) Fixation on Star Trek NG style technology, a nearly religious fixation on high tech
2) Virtue signaling: I am a good person, look at my conspicuously shaped EV that shows my holiness
3) Ignorance: they buy into all the hype without understanding what they are getting into
4) A genuine desire to "save the planet" by buying something they believe that is more ecologically superior.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 16, 2023 12:09 PM (0hOvj)

Boss should have known better, he had the STEM background to be capable of doing math to find out that the trees were removing more CO2 than the solar panel electricity was going to prevent. Maybe he hated raking leaves or feared an old tree would fall on the house. Or it was just make the wifey happy to score more sex and BJs, I don't know.

Bought a 2004 F150 FX4 with the odious 5.4 lt that got about 14 mpg if you drove it below 65 mph (regular gas). Great truck on most issues though.
Now I have a 2014 F150 XLT with 4wd and a 5.0 lt V8. It typically breaks 17 mpg if I run it at 75 mph, better if I go slower. Say 19+ mpg at 65 mph on regular gas.

337 EVs will be mandatory in my state in a few years.
They are expensive to maintain, you can't do it at home and after about a decade they require replacement to a $10,000+ battery (if the battery is still being made).

No one will want a 10 year old used EV. Used gas-powered vehicles that can be cheaply maintained will be in high demand, their price will skyrocket putting them out of the reach or the young & the poor.

338 Yes, you can call it "transitory" if an auto company is transitioning from a high-volume producer of vehicles people want to purchase, into a boutique producer of niche cars. You can also call it corporate suicide.

349 I owned a 1995 Ford F150 XL with the 300 six cylinder that got about 10 mpg using regular. Plain old truck, no frills.
Get rid of ethanol and any of those trucks would improve by 15% on the mpg.

>>No one will want a 10 year old used EV.

EV's are disposable just like the FitBit watch I returned to day.

Brought it back to the store, women took the essentially brand new watch out of the package, made sure that it matched up to the receipt, threw all of the packaging away, threw the watch into a bin gave me back a return receipt.

I asked her why she threw away all of the packaging, she said the watch is not going to be resold and that it's going straight to the equivalent of the car crusher for electronic gizmos.

That's the future of EV's.

I live in Ohio, and most of our electricity used to come from coal-fired electric generating plants. Now is seems to come from natural gas turbine generators (at least the majority).
So EV's are (generally) charged here with electricity generated by burning methane to drive a turbine that drives a generator.
Why not eliminate the "middle man" (and transmission losses, etc) and build cars that are designed to run on compressed natural gas? An ICE motor with the natural gas capacity designed from the beginning. And...you could fill it from home, by having a compressor feed off you natural gas line, to fill the car (pressurizing methane). Seems safer than high energy density batteries that become chemically unstable due to the high chemical potential created by charging with electricity.

362 Great post, Buck, as usual.

My standard response remains the same.

The underlying premise for all of this idiocy (no matter how even *internally* illogical and indefensible it is, as in the mining requirement for batteries) should not and must not be accepted.

The outlandish hypothesis that human activity is or can affect global "climate", and the accompanying baseless assumption that this is a problem - much less a "crisis" or "emergency" - need to be challenged and demolished. Discussions of the obvious infeasibility (in all respects) of the many wasteful and damaging "responses" to this "crisis", with a public as incapable of critical thinking as today's, run the great risk of furthering, not stopping, this nonsense.

Guy graduated a year ahead of me, who wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, currently works for father's Ford dealership. ONly dealership in town, which isn't doing well in this economy, and he owns the town's only F150 Lightning, the decried electric one, not the cool sport truck of the past. I don't see the local FD shelling out $35k just to put his truck out. Given how small the town is i'm pretty sure letting it burn to a total loss would result in some stink eye at the local bar.

372 Puncturing EV battery compartments is a very, very risky idea. The best solution at the moment is let them burn.

In Europe they are starting to use a strategy of deploying a dumpster that has doors where they can push the burning vehicle into the dumpster and haul it away to a spot where they can let it burn.

Late to the thread, but my prescription for EV fires: First rescue the occupants, especially the children, where present. Second, dump sand on it, until the whole car is smothered in sand. Let it sit for a week, then carefully remove sand.

Nice tune, Buck!

373 Sorry I couldn't respond to comments until now, but there is an abundance of VWs on dealer lots. I looked at dealer inventories in Dallas and Houston, and you will have no problem finding plenty of Volkswagen SUVs sitting on the lot and needing to be sold (with plenty more showing as in transit.) Then I looked at Toyota and Honda dealers and there is very little on dealer lots. Almost all Toyota and Honda SUV "inventory" is in transit. VW is being massively rejected by consumers. It may not be related to the EV obsession at VW, but consumers are aggressively rejecting VW in favor of competitors. Meanwhile VW executives are hostile to the core product that consumers desire.

374 CO2 can't even cause a significant rise in temps. A doubling of CO2 from 400 ppm to 800 ppm would only decrease radiated thermal energy by about 3 W/square meter (~1%). That's less than 1 degree C of warming.

This doubling will take about 170 years at the current rate.

CO2 is in saturation except at high altitude. Most CO2 emitted has no effect on temps.

@JackStraw, at present rates the tipping point is 2028, where demand for lithium absolutely exceeds projected available supply. There will almost certainly be bottlenecks in the supply chain that crop up before then. But we won't have to worry about it, because the economic crash that makes all this stuff irrelevant is much sooner in our future.

381 Following Formula 1 racing, which uses ICE/electric hybrids, there are times when the car is barricaded so that no one touches it when the body could be energized. I recall one of the drivers in 2022 talking about being instructed to jump clear of the car if he had to get out after an accident.

Posted by: Advo at January 16, 2023 02:33 PM (VHN21)

382 Once again, I have an opposite take on the news.

Electric cars (BEVs) burn much less often than gasoline cars (but it's worse when they do burn). BEVs are still, overall much safer.

Toyota is not brave: they are trying to fight BEVs rather than building some. The more the market moves to BEVs, the more trouble for Toyota. They may be out of business within a decade.

Tesla jacked their prices way up when demand far exceeded what they could produce. Demand is coming down, their production is up, and the so-called "Inflation Reduction Act" ("IRA") strongly incentivizes selling a car for $55,000 or less. So Tesla dropped their prices to hit that target. They did it overnight, not slowly, which is having a shock effect on the market. They cut Model Y prices by $13,000 and the IRA gives $7,500 so net price cut was $20,500. Not surprising a used Model Y price had to go down.

You don't need to tell me that Tesla stock is way down. I noticed. Tesla is going to be the biggest company in the world, making more money than anyone else, but Wall Street is being dumb and/or short sellers are playing games.

383 Both Honda and Nissan were off more than 20% Y-O-Y 21/22. Much as I dislike this EV fashion-show crap, your post-hoc/propter-hoc on VW sales is not convincing.

And the only reason that GM and Ford sales were off only slightly is that both of them have pickup trucks and were able to manufacture and deliver them. VW does not have them. Note well: GM's Little Old Lady Personnel Manager CEO is almost as committed to EV as is VW.

Posted by: dad29 at January 16, 2023 02:50 PM (mzJmr)

384 As for VW, they just saw the Model Y become the most popular car in Europe, displacing the VW Golf (which has been the most popular car for decades).

https://bit.ly/3CRMGqK

Increasingly consumers are buying more electric cars and fewer gas or diesel cars. If you plot market share percentages as a graph, the S-curve shape appears. This graph of sales in Germany extrapolates a curve and it looks like the crossover point (where 50% of all cars are electric) will happen around 2025.

https://twitter.com/Nitzao/status/1612311525426864128

So make a mental note and around 2025 decide whether electric cars were just a fad, or not.

Posted by: mr_jack at January 16, 2023 02:53 PM (57l0O)

385 #383 @dad29:

> GM's Little Old Lady Personnel Manager CEO is almost as committed to EV as is VW.

More committed. VW used to have a CEO (Herbert Diess) who was trying to drag VW into committing more thoroughly to EVs. VW as a company didn't want to hear it and got rid of him.

Mary Barra has claimed that by 2025, GM will be selling more EVs than Tesla. That would be an amazing trick. Tesla sold over 1.3 million EVs in 2022, while GM sold 39 thousand. So Tesla sold over 33 times as many. If GM wants to beat Tesla, it wouldn't be enough to produce 33 times as many EVs in two years... they would need to increase production something like 50 times in two years. Yeah, good luck with that.

I don't think Mary Barra believes her own BS. I think she knew she was lying when she made her comments. If not, then she herself needs to be committed.

Posted by: mr_jack at January 16, 2023 02:58 PM (57l0O)

386 Something I forgot to add: When the battery cells are on fire they emit oxygen for a while which helps raise the temp of the fire emitted. There was discussion in my class about certain blankets that may or may not work to suffocate. Considering temps of 6000F I am unaware of something economically available to help suffocate an EV fire whether it be a blanket or steel box(steel melts at 2500F.

Posted by: Danimal28 at January 16, 2023 04:02 PM (ryUqI)

387 I think Mary Berra was the worst thing that happened to GM....they need NEW car guys that understand the market like Zuntov, Harley Earl and even Delorean did. Berra is the car equivalent of resident Brandon.
