The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Only by strengthening the key structural components of the Armed Forces is it possible to guarantee the military security of the state and protect new entities and critical facilities of the Russian Federation,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu

Quote II

"In 2013 I flew to Singapore, and when I landed I had to wear a mask. The air was toxic because they were burning the rainforest in Indonesia."
Shara Ticku

Quote III

“I think everybody is at the edge of their frustration. You can say, ‘My gosh, that’s heartless.’ Well, maybe that person gets up every day and sees human sh*t on his front door.” Greg Gutfeld

Quote IV

"I've been saying since 2020 that we have to get back to a party that appeals to more people that can win in tough places like I've done in Maryland. And I think that lane is much wider now than it was a week ago." Outgoing Gov. Larry Hogan (RINO-MD)

And when the 2024 GOP Primaries are finished and you have not one delegate will you look in the mirror and say "What a loser".

Oops!

Personnel with the Transportation Security Administration discovered an undeclared, 84mm M4 rifle in outbound checked luggage Monday at the San Antonio International Airport, according to a tweet from the federal agency. The owner of the weapon was identified as a person using it as an exhibit during the SHOT show, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas.

A spokesperson for the TSA said the weapon was secured in checked baggage but hadn’t been declared with the airline, as is required with all weapons, NBC DFW reported.

“We don’t see that caliber of weapon very often, thank god,” TSA spokesperson Patricia Mancha told San Antonio TV station KENS 5. She said the weapon was been handed over to the San Antonio Police Department.

An app designed to build "a better future for female health" by helping women track their menstrual cycles now claims that menstruation is not an exclusively female experience.

When a user complained on Twitter that Flo — a tracking app that claims to help you "know your body, own your health" — permitted men into "secret chats" about topics related to menstruation, Flo replied, "We aim to support everyone with periods - regardless of gender," followed by a pride flag and a "trans" flag emoji.

As I told Edward from the RNC last week, "Until Ronna McDaniel is gone I'm not giving any money. Goodbye."

More than 150 major Republican donors threw their support behind Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Ronna McDaniel in a Monday letter.

The RNC will select its next leader at the end of January, with California civil rights attorney and RNC national committeewoman Harmeet Dhillon and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell both challenging McDaniel. McDaniel’s critics have pointed to disappointing midterm results including a slim majority in the House of Representatives and losses in the Senate to justify McDaniel’s ouster, but the donors who support her pointed to her fundraising successes and fulfilled promises.

Fulfilled promises? What a laugh.

It appears the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN would rather cater to this crowd.

Than to this guy.

A Christian man was ordered to remove his “Jesus Saves” T-shirt by security staff at a Mall of America, according to reports.

Video on social media shows security guards at the mall in Bloomington, Minnesota, telling the man that shoppers were offended by his shirt.

Footage of the incident shows the front of the shirt reads: “Jesus Saves.”

The back of the shirt included the Coexist symbol which is crossed out with “Jesus is the only way” printed below.

“Jesus is associated with religion and it’s offending people,” one of the guards in the footage is heard telling the man.

Is that a machine gun in your pocket or are you just a Genius Award Winner.

Police officers tried to help a drunk man at a subway station — and realized he was packing a bizarre-looking homemade rifle in his pants, leading to his arrest over the weekend, police sources said Monday.

Melvin Montoya, 37, was found drunk inside the 149th Street–Grand Concourse station in Mott Haven around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, and cops jumped in to aid him, authorities said.

That’s when they noticed a long, heavy metal object going down his leg.

The officers frisked Montoya — and he allegedly reached for the crudely-made weapon, which the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit later determined was a gas-operated one-shot rifle, according to police and the sources.

It is about time. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

For more than 50 years, Navy pilot Royce Williams couldn’t talk about his epic Korean War dogfight with seven Soviet fighter jets. He’d been sworn to secrecy because of Cold War sensitivities, and all mention of the battle was scrubbed from the official records.

Now the 97-year-old California resident is going to receive the Navy Cross, the second-highest award for combat valor. He said Friday afternoon that he’s pleased to get the recognition.

“My friends have been trying to get this for me for a long time,” he said.

The ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 20 at noon at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park.

“The heroism and valor he demonstrated for 35 harrowing minutes 70 years ago in the skies over the North Pacific and the coast of North Korea saved the lives of his fellow pilots, shipmates, and crew,” U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa said in a statement Friday announcing the ceremony. “His story is one for the ages, but is now being fully told.”

34 Good evening everyone. I missed posting this in J.J.'s news roundup this morning:

Saint of the Day
St. Anthony of the Desert (251--356 A.D.), was a leading figure among the Desert Fathers, the early Christian monks who lived in the Egyptian desert in the 3rd and 4th centuries. The story of his life was written by St. Athanasius of Alexandria. After the death of Anthony's parents, he desired to conform himself to the manner of life of the Apostles and early Christians. On hearing these words from the Gospel of Matthew in church, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me," St. Anthony left everything behind to live a life of prayer, fasting, self-denial, and labor. He eventually removed himself from all society and became the first Christian to live a life of consecrated solitude. He occasionally left his hermitage for pressing matters, once to encourage persecuted Christians, and another time to support Pope Athanasius against the heresy of Arius. St. Anthony died at the age of one hundred and five. His feast day is January 17th.

There is money to be made fostering, I saw it when we fostered. People "specialized" in difficult, emotionally impaired kids with lots of behaviors, and the state pays premium so they don't have to keep moving the kids from family to family when the behaviors get out of control or the family has had enough. I also know that the money that was to be used for clothing and other needs specifically for the foster kid had very little oversight, so it went into the pockets of the foster parents. Not saying every foster family did these things, because I met and knew many who were wonderful people. It's just that the system is ripe for abuse and abuse of the kids. And it happens.

212 (2) no ICE vehicles will be available for purchase due to the government banning the production of ICE vehicles.

I should add that the government does not even need to outright ban ICE vehicles. They just need to modify CAFE standards such that there is no possible way to meet the standards -- and thus avoid fines that will put the auto company out of business -- without making 100% EVs.

We are already close to that reality now with current CAFE standards put in place by Obama and scheduled to continue to get even more strict in 2025 and then 2030. President Trump was relaxing those standards and likely was going to relax them even more in his 2nd term. Yet another reason of many that the WEF-controlled Deep State rigged and stole the election to remove him from office. His anti-regulation, America-first policies were creating the best American economy in history. The exact opposite of what the WEF and Deep State want.

We must see to it that stand up candidates LOCALLY and Nationally are elected.

294 Russkis making gainzzz around a fairly important town in Donetsk, it might result in Uke lines falling back in that area. Ukes in Zaporozhe oblast are building fortifications, including near the capital (in their hands still), after months of activity pointing towards an offensive. Russia still able to hit Uke infrastructure at will, pretty much.

I have no idea what later in the winter or the warmer months hold. However two key aspects have never seemed likely to change: Russia is unlikely to get its top goal, which is Uke neutrality, and Ukraine is unlikely to regain territory in the east or ever again rule over Donetsk and Lugansk. Ukraine is a basket case entirely dependent on fairly huge foreign subsidies to keep the plates spinning (everything, not just military) for more than a week.

The unknown unknowns are always out there, but a robust stalemate, warm to hot (there were people being killed all the time in the east from 2014 on, without any international interest or attention), indefinitely, would be worth a modest bet. In crypto-currency.

We had a very sick cat the past couple of days. Sunday night, this kitty, Della, just wouldn't eat, threw up a little, and went and hid in a closet, and was just feeling awful. Miley and I got her to the vet Monday.

Blood work showed her liver numbers were way too high, and that was due to some toxin ingested. We wondered what she could've gotten into. Long story short, it was mostly likely eating a lizard. No joke.

She finds little salamanders and stuff all the time. Some of them can be toxic (and carry a liver parasite as well -- luckily there was no sign of that, because it can kill them).

All of my life, I've heard old timers use the phrase, "eating lizards" to describe a skinny, poorly cat. I thought that was just some off-the-wall expression to describe a skinny cat, but apparently there's something to it.

She's feeling better and just walked in to see me here at the computer and then wanted something to eat.

314 307 Welp, there goes the wet Tesla hypothesis.

Tesla's have no air intake for an engine, which is usually what blows up conventional ICEs in such circumstances. The battery and power electronics are sealed and if there were a problem there it would long have manifested itself in leaking out all the coolant - yes Tesla's have a ferociously complex cooling system and all of the Power electronics and the battery are liquid cooled.

So it comes down to possibly shorting out a failed seal on electrical connector. And the Auto industry has gotten really good at weather sealing electrical connectors. The one good thing the EPA has ever done for the auto industry was mandating 100k emissions warranties because that forced the development of really good weathersealed electrical connectors. That's at least 50% of the reliability improvement in cars since the 1970s.

The other thing thing that gets compromised by driving in water? Brakes. Depending upon lining type, brake pads can have near-zero effectiveness until the water is dried off from the heat of friction. And if rotors were hot when they hit the water, they might warp. I have experienced loss of braking due to wet brakes, and it is pretty dramatic if you are not expecting it. If you are expecting it, no biggie; just apply brakes gently until they warm up and begin to take hold.

I'll save the obvious joke that that's Kamala's job. Or does she just do the trailer hitches.

A lot of late model cars that have fancy abs do very much the same thing if you're not using the brakes regularly they will occasionally throw a little pressure at them to drag the pads and clean things off.

Yeah the drum brakes on my old 66 falcon were pretty much useless after driving through any kind of standing water if I knew I was coming up to some I would drag the brakes myself.

371 Not prompted by the last few comments, just happened to be watching this and it's fairly interesting (video on Russian carrier Kuznetsov).

At the very end he notes that Russia underfunded training and maintenance in recent years, to which must be added that much of this is fairly typical of Russian (and others') approach around the world.

What he doesn't say is that Russia has generally provided limited funding for military purposes for a while, just enough for a "small, compact army" theoretically to be qualitatively upgraded (sort of the western model since 1991). They also are part way into a fundamental restructuring of ground forces, the new look is not really best suited to flexible defense, not offense.

As again indicated today by an MOD announcement, military expenditures and efforts generally are slated to be increased, with the last year as the clear impetus.

390 A 2014 book by a Russian military historian mentions the encounter. It said that seven MiGs left a base in Vladivostik that morning, and only one returned. Four were shot down by a single U.S. aircraft, another was shot up and crashed, and the seventh plane was never found.

Leave the bastards worse off than you found them. Good work, sir.

I watched an episode of "The Wire" (season 2, episode 1) this evening.

The sonorous bore Garrison Keillor was clearly heard multiple times on the radio of a van being driven by two inner city B'more humps as they traveled to Philly ... that was the "tell" that what I was watching was fiction.

396 Those little electric, oil-filled radiator heaters are great!

We use them in the coldest areas of house, far from pellet stove. Really makes the place livable, takes the edge off of chilly spots. Not too bad on energy consumption if kept at low-range (500w) and low temp setting, but still noticeable $ increase.

Best parts are: no noisy fans and no exposed elements to create enhanced fire danger. (Common sense still applies)

Quityerbitchin' Just kidding. In the last week, the egg prices near me (Queens) have been in the $7-9 range, with 18 large brown eggs going for over $11.

Egg prices have gotten so crazy I don't even like making pancakes anymore because I hate using an egg. Same for cooking food that requires egg washes/dips. When I make eggplant parm, I can use 6 or more eggs for the egg wash. Not making eggplant parm for a while.

$1 more at Safeway in S.F. Of course, our eggs come from chickens that have room to get their motors running!

Posted by: SFGoth at January 18, 2023 03:19 AM (KAi1n)

404 RickZ-- OMG!!! Those prices are insane!

We're in the middle of "farm country" so yeah, expect egg prices to be a little better. Also, neighbors with chickens, about $2/dozen there.

You'd think butter would be more reasonable here too, but no... $5-6/lb.

Posted by: JQ at January 18, 2023 03:23 AM (o0Fxd)

405 Mornin', all

I guess I'd say I'm a bit of an egg snob! I buy the ones from pasture raised chickens. They used to be around $3 a dozen. They've been fluctuating between 6.49-8.49 a dozen of late. I eat a lot of eggs. Costly.

409 Eggs were the cheapest protein a gal could get, not so long ago.

As a young, broke, divorcee (yeah, I didn't take him to the cleaners even though he's the one who was screwing around..) I LIVED on eggs. Restaurant job. The line cooks would accidentally break the yolk or overcook or whatever, so gave them to another employee vs throwing in the trash.

That they are. They are so bad, I haven't made egg salad in quite a while I just don't want to use the eggs, even though it's always more than one sandwich. Used to be a decent, cheap homemade lunch. Now, not so much.

Like I said, though, at these prices I want to see the egg, whether it's fried, poached, scrambled, boiled, in an omelette, whatever. I don't want it 'disappeared' into other things. I hate having to even think about cooking like that, much less actually doing it.

Posted by: JQ at January 18, 2023 03:36 AM (o0Fxd)

416 RickZ-- the overall cost of living is quite a bit less here, than where you are. I'm sure that's considerable also.

420 Wanted to buy treats for the neighbor kids and my little nephew last summer-- they were playing so hard in the heat, and behaving so very well.

Box of Otter Pops was $9.xx at Costco, $2.99 at local grocery. Unbelievable difference, would've thought it would be the other way around, pricewise.

424 bargain hunting is necessary.

Posted by: JQ at January 18, 2023 03:44 AM (o0Fxd)

I only shop when I get the Old Fart's Discount. In two stores, 10% off (Wednesday in both plus Friday in one). A closer one (I'm a pedestrian), has a 5% discount every day. It also has a decent deli and good fresh rolls prices. The other two, I buy certain things in each because one is better than the other at different items, mostly price but also quality, milk longevity (seriously, some places where I buy it, the milk goes bad as soon as I open it) and, of course, sales. One store is always $.10-.20 a pound cheaper on basic veggies like onions.

Posted by: RickZ at January 18, 2023 03:56 AM (emlEe)

425 Sorry you're having pain, MLii. Guess I've been missing stuff too...

Yeah, finding the bargains reminds me of when I was young and broke. Drive 20 miles to save 50 cents. Fk. Can't even do that anymore, gas is so $$.

Ramen packs were 15/dollar and grape drink (like unsweetened koolaid) was 20/dollar at the scratch-n-dent food store. Could get 5# sugar for 99cents. UGH!

I *still* cannot stand grape koolaid and any kind of ramen!!!!!!!

426 I do have a trusted chiropractor, JT! Been going intermittently for years. Slacking off with that of late tho, with all the taking care of mom stuff, and of emptying her house. Lots of extra heavy-duty moving of furniture and cleaning the past few months.

429 Lol JQ! What we used to eat

RickZ. I found a locally owned place that has a nice butcher shop, meats are good and semi-reasonable
Sales are the key. Altho it's a bit more of a drive, (about 20-30 min) I find other reasons to go that direction and try to consolidate trips. I mostly buy meats and produce, have eliminated the extras. I've always had to budget for everything, having been a stay at home mom for years, I learned fast what we can do without! But food is a thing for me. I like good food!
