The Morning Report — 1/5/23

pondersubrosa.jpg

Good morning, kids. So, Kevin McLuntz lost a sixth vote last night for House Speaker. Between the Democrats guffawing – and as some say, being incredibly stupid by not making him the proverbial "offer he can't refuse" by dragging his sagging ass over the finish line in exchange for being their puppet for the next two years – and the GOPe with its hair on fire because of the 20 "terrorists" in their eyes preventing him from taking the seat, you'd think this was an existential crisis the likes of which rattle the very foundation of the republic to its core.

Bitch, please. The most laugh-out-loud commentary on this episode, which just oozes cluelessness comes from some fellow at PJ Media by the name of Lincoln Brown.

If, however, the interest is over committee assignments or potential benefits, or if said congressperson simply has an axe that they feel needs grinding, then it may be time to reconsider. If personal gain or making a point is the reason for objecting to McCarthy, then there is an albeit risk not only of electing a minority party speaker but also of turning into the thing to which you are ostensibly opposed and rendering the GOP MIA.

That is not to say that the dissenters need to roll over. McCarthy would do well to heed the concerns of the opposition. That is also part of running a Republic. Compromise can work and Boebert asserts that McCarthy has rebuffed proposals from his opponents.

The questions that McCarthy and rebellion must answer, as soon as possible, are not just cui bono, but what are they trying to accomplish? Our Republic is not designed to be easy, but at some point, there comes a time to get on with the people’s business.

Let me not jump entirely down Mr. Brown's throat because he does make a few valid observations both about the process, the motivations of the individuals involved on our side, and perhaps the negative outcome should a Democrat or Democrat-controlled or influenced GOPe Speaker be selected. Perfectly reasonable except for one tiny detail he doesn't seem to realize: the nation as founded and as it was intended to be governed ceases to exist. All of this, at least in my estimation, is complete kabuki-bukkake theater.

First of all, as messy as all of this appears, it's actually the way things were intended to be. I have no problems with that, insofar as it shows healthy skepticism, debate and people standing on principles. As for "doing the people's business," Congress has not come anywhere close to doing that at least since the end of the Second World War, if not before that. Probably its last stand was when FDR's own party rebelled against some of the more egregious aspects of the New Deal and his court-packing scheme to ram it all down our throats.

"Doing the people's business." Pfft. Let me state this as clearly as I can. Every single nano-second that this government is prevented from "doing the people's business," which amounts to robbing us of our freedom, our finances and our children's children's futures, is a blessed gift from The Almighty to be savored in that it prevents, or at least forestalls our inevitable plunging into the abyss. If we're not plunging already.

In any case, I will say that symbolically at least, it does show that not everyone in that House of Representatives Ill-Repute is a phony criminal whore out to line his/her pockets. Opposition to McCarthy and digging in the heels is for sure a barometer of the mood of the people who are sick and fucking tired of this go along to get along corruption and business as usual.

As of this morning, supposedly McCarthy has caved in to the complete list of demands the holdouts want in return for their votes. Does that really mean anything, not only in terms of the value of McCarthy's word but more crucially, in terms of the status of this nation, which is to say, that it's dead?

The Morning Report's biggest fan, Victor Davis Hanson:

Did someone or something seize control of the United States?

What happened to the U.S. border? Where did it go? Who erased it? Why and how did 5 million people enter our country illegally? Did Congress secretly repeal our immigration laws? Did Joe Biden issue an executive order allowing foreign nationals to walk across the border and reside in the United States as they pleased?

Since when did money not have to be paid back? Who insisted that the more dollars the federal government printed, the more prosperity would follow? When did America embrace zero interest? Why do we believe $30 trillion in debt is no big deal? . . .

. . . How did a virus cancel the Constitution? Did the lockdowns rob of us of our sanity? Or was it the woke hysteria that ignited our collective madness?

We are beginning to wake up from a nightmare to a country we no longer recognize, and from a coup we never knew.

VDH is a pretty sharp cookie, so I will assume the gravamen of his discourse consists of rhetorical questions. Yet, considering everything he asks and his final question, you have to really ponder the vaudeville act going on in the House as we speak.

In light of all of this, does it really matter who gets to wield Malig-Nancy Pelosi's clown gavel? In the end (pun intended), we're the ones getting the Paul Pelosi treatment with it.

7 Good morning everyone. Thank you J.J.

Saint of the Day
St. John Neumann (1811-1860) was born in Bohemia in what is now the Czech Republic. He entered the seminary, and when the day came for his ordination to the priesthood, his bishop fell ill and couldn't proceed with the ceremony. However, because Bohemia had an over-abundance of priests, John's ordination was never rescheduled. Undeterred in pursuing his priestly vocation, John decided to go to America to seek ordination. He came to the United States in 1836 as a missionary priest to serve America's European immigrant population. He was ordained in New York, joined the Redemptorists, and was later consecrated a bishop. He is famous for knowing twelve languages and for being the first American man and American bishop to be canonized. St. John Neumann left his impact on the United States by building a vast number of churches, schools, hospitals, and orphanages. The number of parochial school students greatly increased in his diocese. St. John Neumann had a strong effect on the religious life of the laity in the United States, especially in his promotion of devotion to the Holy Eucharist. His feast day is January 5th.

9 You'd think McCarthy and co would deal with the freedom caucus- and then backstab them later. Complete intraction. Notice how all of this is framed:

-no alternative aside from McC- not even another RINO.
-complete just running headlong at the proposition (if only they had shown this intractability with Obamacare or any of a dozen other issues.)
-the other side is literally terrorists- which is not language they would use for the commies on the other side of the aisle. They feel completely safe in using this language against their own side.
-People Show You Who They Are.

FDR vetoed the 1944 tax bill with a message that was deliberately insulting to Congress. Senate Majority Leader Alben Barkley was so outraged that he resigned his post. He was immediately re-elected and Congress overrode the veto by a huge margin.

They want "go along to get along" over decades of the most disgusting displays of tyranny and the enslavement of the entire populace to the unfettered whims of an increasingly insane political class.

If your neighbor is breaking down your fences, cutting down your trees, and defecating in your back yard, you don't invite him in for dinner in the name of neighborliness. You call the police. If that neighbor is the chief of police? You don't really have a lot of options then, do you?

50 I work on the operating assumption that all politicians are compromised at some point in their careers. The amount of money at stake at even the local level encourages people to buy/rent politicians. Nancy Pelosi gained and held onto power because her constituents had billions and she could lavish money on congressional candidates like no one else. She represented the tech interests, not Americas.

The narrative the Freedom Caucus is pushing is that they want committee chairs, a legal authority to investigate and some other mickey mouse perks. The committee chairs are important. The legal authority is interesting and probably the point of contention because it stands to lay open some interesting possibilities.

A 'floor fight' is a nomination, debate and voting process, just as we're seeing with the GOP. It isn't scary, destructive, suicidal etc. - that's media spin and the media hate the GOP. Unfortunately, far too many on our side are joining the chorus.

It's the ultimate in transparency, something everyone claims to want - until they get it, apparently.

I'm not sure, either. They could form a bloc and refuse to pass Republican legislation, I suppose, or block things from exiting committee and grind things to a halt until they get their way. But on legislation - as opposed to big, one-off things like this - there will be more opportunities for dealmaking with the Dems to bypass them.

Sure, of course. Which then invites a question: why are they not making McCarthy stand down? If one Uniparty man is as good as the next, why die on this hill?

I think Crenshaw explained it quite well. It isn't that McCarthy is essential - he isn't, because there's another cucked-out, tucked-under Uniparty drone waiting in the wings - it's that they want to concede nothing to the base. Nothing. Not even a mid-value scalp like McCarthy's. The Uniparty gets what it wants, and the base gets fucked. No quarter, no compromise, no concession - nothing that base wants shall be done, for any reason.

It's institutional contempt.

I don't much care. If the plan was just to make a scene and grind things to a halt with no backup plan at all or path to victory, I don't much care. If there is no backup plan, then I hope they just hold out. Give it a couple of months of no House and laugh at the press whenever they're mean to you and the other side will break ranks.

Total deposits from digital asset customers declined to $3.8 billion at the end of December 2022, compared with $11.9 billion at Sept. 30, 2022, the crypto-focused bank said in a preliminary earnings report.

Ace had a post when we got up in the morning to find the seven states that had 'stopped' vote counting n the early evening had actually continued through the night and put Biden just beyond the margin of automatic recount in each one with a title along the lines of "They're stealing the election."

Every reasonable person at the time knew it was a coup, and many recognized it as the same thing DC pulled in overthrowing the legitimate, Russia friendly government of Ukraine.

I suppose it's helpful for people to recognize it now, at least insofar as they get that there is no moral justification in continued cooperation with the illegitimate regime in DC. Fear of retaliation, maybe, but let's be honest that that's all it is.

I remember all the discussion about how we did not capture/kill Osama bin Laden during the Clinton Administration, because there was a lack of communication/cooperation between the intelligence agencies like the FBI and CIA. Well, they have since fixed that lack of communication and cooperation and they have been working together for at least the past decade to censor Americans and control the narrative through cooperation with social media and tech companies.

In hindsight, all the left-wingers who were against the PATRIOT Act and the security state were correct. Granted, I think a large majority of the people were not principled, but were simply against it, because President Bush and the GOP were enacting the policies. But people like Greenwald and the Wikileaks guy (Assange?) were principled opposition.

Not quite. In banking, even before the FDIC, the depositors were the most-senior creditors. They get paid first. If the bank is truly insolvent, then the remaining assets are divvied up and sent to depositors proportionally and the other creditors (bond holders, investors, etc.) get nothing. The depositor does not get made whole, but he has first claim on the bankruptcy assets.

That is not "the money belongs to the bank" but rather "you'll get what you can get off of the carcass before the vultures get a bite."

461 So if all soy running around in boys is causing the increase in chopadicktomy trannies what's causing all the girls to get their tits hacked off? Are a bunch of girls trying to become boys in the absence of real males left, à la Jurassic Park?

There must still be some underlying malevolence guiding all this because it is civilization-destroying.

Good thread here has a pretty interesting possible explanation: social/semantic contagion. Similar to previous social contagions in girls/women like bulimia and cutting. She also mentions that multiple-personality disorder spread similarly in 1990s.

Yup, we had our moment in the sun one Election night in 2016 when we put Trump over the top. Well they 'fixed' that - at least for the next four years.

465 What are the odds that during Bidens visit to the border something "happens" that let's the administration crack down on the average citizen instead of securing the border?

467 I fully support the 'terrorists' and as a former soldier I have zero respect for Crenshaw; he is a corporate groveler like most of them.

The longer the government gets nothing done, the better off we will be.

468 Nothing has put me in as good a mood as seeing Vanity(love that nickname) being stupid enough to have his staff post a link to his stupid fight with Lauren on twitter....every comment I have seen is bashing him for being such a swamp rat, and a bully to boot.

470 The Bush Donalds stuff is awful. But even worse is that gutter whore, Cheri Jacobius, whitesplaining things to people about how black men need to act. She so wanted to call him the n word.

471 "The people's business" ought to be staying out of the people's business. Fighting over who gets to lead the house next is one way to ensure they do just (and only) that, if only fleetingly.

472 At this point, I think the House should just adjourn. I don't think time will change the outcome but this show serves no point.
Mind you, in February, Biden will call the House back into session for the debt ceiling which will require a Speaker of House to pass. However, if Republican cannot elect a speaker, then we either default , which I suspect is what most on this site want or 6 republicans can switch votes to Jeffries, and we can show the world that the Republican party is dead, which again I think people on this site want.
People on this site don't understand that if you are in the minority, you have to get allies to get the majority. Coalitions are a path to what you want and that requires compromise. Until the Freedom Caucus understands that, then you will always lose elections and see legislation you despise passed.

473 The #conservatives who lament the current situation are part of the problem. Too Civically and Economically ignorant to be of any use to the Insurrection. They're Tories who are willing accomplices to the Pedocrats.

Vote for this evil, because it's slightly less evil than that evil. Republicants working together with Pedocrats to make us all less free is better than Congress getting nothing done. Welfare isn't welfare if somebody put in an 8 hour day for it. Government can solve economic and social problems as long as the right people are in charge.

#conservatives of this stripe deserve everything that's coming.

Well, you did get to see Olivia Hussey's boobs (and they were magnificent).

We watched that in my HS Shakespeare class after we read R&J. Teacher (remember the rolling AV carts with a TV and VCR on them?) missed the screen when trying to cover up the boobies scene with a folder.
