Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Vote For House Speaker: All We Can Hope For Is Casualties On Both Sides!![]() “Then, on the very first day, the first thing we’re going to do is repeal the 87,000 IRS agents,” McCarthy continued. “Another reason why the Democrats are mad at me, I think – government should be here to help you, not to go after you, then we’re going to secure our border. You’ve got to secure this border, the millions of people coming across, the fentanyl that’s killing our children. We need to work on our economy. That means making us energy-independent. We need to hold this government accountable. Where’s the origin of COVID began? Find out what this Biden family had done in the process. Make sure the FBI is not going after Americans but actually going after crime. We’ve got so much work behind us, and we need to start on the very first day.” Sounds great...I guess. Just one little problem; there is no way he can "defund" the IRS because the funding was in the omnibus bill that he voted for. Okay...two problems; the House has no power to "secure the border." Well, three problems; exactly what process will he use to make America energy independent again? And the rest of it is typical "WE WILL INVESTIGATE!" It's just a garden-variety politician spouting talking points in the hope that somebody will believe his bullshit. We have had enough of that crap, and while I don't know what is going to happen today (the House reconvenes at noon), if McCarthy cared at all about America he would withdraw from the race for Speaker of The House, because he clearly has no mandate, nor will he be able to be a unifying force in the upcoming session. And let us never forget his complicity in the shit-show that was the 2022 Midterms. He failed spectacularly, and for that he should be relegated to the backbench...forever. A cursory look at the politicians who are supporting McCarthy finds a Who's-Who of GOPe-friendly, lobbyist-supported machine politicians. And that's no surprise. Unless (or until) the young firebrands who have ridden Trump's coattails into power grow their ranks and remain enemies of traditional politics, nothing will change. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has announced his support for McCarthy, which is in direct opposition to the most conservative members of the House who are among the 20 who voted against McCarthy's speakership. I understand that he wants to be seen as a unifying force within the Republican party, but nothing he can do will change the GOPe policy of virulent anti-Trumpism.They will take his support and then stab him in the back the first chance they get! And let us never forget his complicity in the shit-show that was the 2022 Midterms. He failed spectacularly, and for that he should be relegated to the backbench...forever.
++++ He did not fail. Failure would be one thing, but this wasn't failure. He deliberately turfed the election. He and his peers in the Senate and Party (McConnell and Romney) conspired with each other to withhold support from non-Uniparty candidates, actively back opposition candidates, etc. They sacrificed the election with a two-fold goal in mind: 1. Defend the Uniparty at all costs 2. Reduce significant gains to tiny gains so as to increase their own personal power and institutional control while hiding behind razor-thin margins as an excuse for getting nothing done McConnell failed on the second goal. McCarthy succeeded on both. He mustn't be rewarded for that. There is a lot of speculation about Gaetz's motivations, but I don't care what his motivations are. Due to this factor *alone,* McCarthy needs to be punished. The entire Party establishment needs to be punished. I am glad this humiliation is happening. If it triggers an existential conflict within the GOP, so much the better. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 04, 2023 12:24 PM (t0OGg) 76

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump · 4h Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA,THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE “HOUSE” TWICE! REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB - JUST WATCH! --------------- If Republicans are going to fight, we ought to be fighting Mitch McConnell and his domineering, China loving BOSS, I mean wife, Coco Chow. The harm they have done to the Republican Party is incalculable. Today, he couldn’t be elected “Dog Catcher” in Kentucky (Sadly, he only won because of my Endorsement, went up 21 points - SORRY!).
I said a while back that, if I ever had the chance to speak to Teh Donald, I would say, "Mr President, after four years of your own party betraying you, the armed forces deliberately lying to you and disobeying your orders, the Democrats colluding with the FBI and DOJ to frame and arrest you, have you learned your fucking lesson?" Since he's thrown his support to that uniparty felcher McCarthy, the answer is obviously "no." Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at January 04, 2023 12:28 PM (AW0uW) 115

IMO this vote is all about... the Spice must flow...
Congress under current laws and rules, is a pit of corruption. Exhibit 1? Liz Cheney's net worth increased from $7 Million, to $45 Million, during her 6 years in the Senate... as she betrayed the Republican party. EVERY Politician seems to end up rich. given the choice between making a deal with those repubs who won't vote for him or making a deal with the dems to get those addl votes in return for whatever the dems want, i think i know which way mccarthy will go, and we won't like it
but doesn't the speaker of the house control the capitol police and presumbaly their lock-up? let mccarthy promise he'll do whatever he can to drop charges against people being held because they happened to be on the capitol grounds doing nothing on jan 6 and then maybe we can talk. Others may have seen actual correct information on the question, but I assume based on what I see that Trump's support for McCarthy was purely pragmatic and tactical - Kevin was the only likely Speaker (as the votes so far also indicate), PLUS McCarthy unlike McConnell and others has not shunned Trump.
He's gone to Mar a Lago several times to confer with Trump - a mundane thing that would have been routine in old America, but with the bizarre metabolic rejection of Trump by the political class and all related institutions in the country, it stands out. Anyway, I'm assuming the two have some kind of understanding on some big matters. Which again is Trump ordering from a skimpy menu. McCarthy I think was on the passive/pathetic/soft side of the GOP revolt against several of Trump's most important/positive initiatives, not one of the active enemies. In any case, nothing in the picture makes it look like McCarthy would be Trump's first choice, based on substance, it's just the situation he and we face. What we've got here are two major parties, neither with a majority, and a minor party. In a parliamentary system, the minor party picks up significant concessions to join one of the other parties, and it exercises an outsized role in the government.
Unfortunately, in order to keep up the appearance of a two party system, the Uniparty can't have the Dems voting to support the GOPe candidate and marginalize the minor party. And neither can the Dems cut a deal with the minor party. What should concern the Dems is that they have a similar minor party embedded inside their appearance of solidarity, and these non-GOPe types are showing by example what a small minority can do to gum up the works. "He seems susceptible to flattery and promises."
One of the dozens of widely accepted shibboleths here for which I've never seen any evidence. May have missed it, but unaware of an example of anything of substance where "flattery and promises" to Trump affected the course of any action or decision of importance. Smallness of character, misjudgments, and outright deception - can think of examples of those by other figures that were a problem. But outside the video game/bad fiction framework in which much of the discussion here operates, these are not cases of Trump failures vs. failures by others. Yeah well that's oversimplified. How you get to where you are going does matter as well in politics. And Trump once again shows how he sucks at this game. The only winning political move here is not to play. Or do something Trump has a hard time with, STFU and stay out of it. I do think McCarthy will win. Well, in theory. They could stop paying for EVERYTHING to get border security, Fauci on trial, payouts to the victims of the clot shot and so on. But as leader McCarthy wouldn't do any of that. And the meltdown, hysterics, and fainting couch act by most of the dim Beltway crowd at what should be a routine event in actual politics (jostling for power and fights over priorities etc) is entertaining, in a dark way.
Yes our system as evolved has different rhythms and patterns, but a fight over leadership in a legislature is often the main routine event in parliamentary systems. But FFS a leadership selection process any more turbulent than the allocation of posts in the Supreme Soviet, in a system/situation desperately calling out for radical changes of course, is obviously to be welcomed.

I can understand two non-gay men saving money by sharing a hotel room on a Vegas trip where the only time you are in the room is when you are sleeping. I don't understand two non-gay men sharing lodging in DC when you are making $174,000 a year. Posted by: Chuck C --------- McCarthy is a multimillionaire and Luntz the Duntz is too. Plus, there is the walking and talking violation of House ethics rules by literally a leader of the GOP living with a corporate lobbyist that has a number of clients wanting legislative favors and making good money from it. He is probably right too, except that that GOP leadership is going to do their best to make sure that doesn't happen. So they'll end up with someone who won't work with them, and is willing to tear the house down. 180: As I understand it, the hold-outs did say what they needed, but it sounds like Crenshaw's threats burned that bridge real good. So now it's just a question of whether we end up with the D as speaker, or if they find someone other than McCarthy. While I still suspect the leftist will somehow be worse than McCarthy, I'm not sure how much difference it wouldake at this point. Heck, given the omnibus funded the country through summer at least, I'm not sure not having any speaker at all is going to be a big deal. Absolutely. It took less than a decade for the Republican Party to completely gut the American political system... it can happen.
I'm just trying to goad people into action (or, more accurately, inaction) so it can be their turn to head into the trash-heap. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice ------------ The major barrier to a new party is that many if not most states have laws making it difficult for third parties such as ballot access, requiring expensive party paid primaries, leadership, and so on. One possible way around it would the old endorser strategy where third parties are created in states that are loosely federated and they endorse major party candidates if those candidates agree to certain positions and they run their own candidates if the major parties balk. Instead of starting nationally, the Reform party started at the provincial level in Canada and surfed off of the failures and corruption of the Liberal Party national government. A similar approach might win in a state and follow the old Democrat Farm Labor strategy in Minnesota from the Progressive era. Posted by: whig at January 04, 2023 01:07 PM (bDjBG) 468
I don't think anyone who actually gets the Speakership is going to be any good or be able to get anything done. It goes beyond the issue of the Senate passing anything, it's that there's no person who will be able to unite the different factions of the GOP in the caucus.
At this point, I'm rooting for a change within the GOP that weakens the establishment. Taking out McCarthy and replacing him with some other spineless pork rectum who can't get anything done without the history to get him there makes him an easier target in 2024 than McCarthy would be at the same time. A source told Just the News that it was "productive." Posted by: SMOD -------------- Trump's background is that you can make a deal even with untrustworthy types. In business, that can be true by use of contract law. Even in foreign policy, that is so via punitive measures against a country or its individuals. In internal politics, not so much as it is difficult to provide immediate sanctions to those breaking agreements and those individuals have every reason to smile and lie today in order to screw the others. Essentially, Trump keeps trusting the GOPe to do the right thing and he ends up like Charlie Brown when the GOPe Lucy pulls the football away at the last minute. Two arrested in Washington state for attacking power sub-stations.
Surprise, they are just ordinary criminals who were wanting to burgle a building. I was wondering if we'd find out they were just meth heads looking for copper. The people looking for a motive seemed to be engaged in the Texas Sharpshooter fallacy. "They attacked this sub-station, let's look for something important they must have been trying to sabotage. I blame my dad for my affinity for horror movies (non-sicko ones) and I tried to watch the original Evil Dead about a year ago for the first time. It was horrifying and incredibly scary. I had to turn it off.
Posted by: Lady in Black at January 04, 2023 12:42 PM (sVtYq) Just skip ahead to "Army of Darkness", it's wonderfully campy and much more comedy b-movie than horror. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at January 04, 2023 01:48 PM (nRMeC) 623
rhomboid: "But FFS a leadership selection process any more turbulent than the allocation of posts in the Supreme Soviet, in a system/situation desperately calling out for radical changes of course, is obviously to be welcomed."
Damn straight. 99+% of the country - and much of the MFM - didn't even know this process happens every election. That it's taking a few moments where there's tangible disagreement at a critical time in the nation's history should be embraced not only for the relief we get from the regular legislation racing to screw us over but for the actual presentation of platform that almost always happens in smoke-filled rooms. And the MFM wants this to be a story so they can invent yet another fiction about how the nation is crumbling and falling apart due to the Republicans. The old "It's not news until we say it is" routine. These proxy DNC operatives who didn't understand the process at all a few days ago are now spinning this as a great catastrophe of epic proportions. Get a grip. It's not. Not in the least. Embrace the suck and hope we get some deviation from the fixed trajectory of fail we've been suffering for decades. Can we vote for McCarthy? Not Kevin, but zombie Senator McCarthy? With full license to go berserk on commies in the government and in Hollywood?

The 1970s was the worst decade for films hands down
I dunno 2000s and 2010s are pretty dreary as well. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor -------- How about an intersection of the two? 'Death Race 2000, filmed in 1975 Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 04, 2023 02:15 PM (raMfo) 626
If Trump hasn't learned what Ryan and McConnel did to him and now supports McCarthy, my opinion of him has changed to the point that his judgement of character is fatally flawed and incapable of learning.
DeSantis makes the right sounds but its what he does not say that worries me. Zip about the political prosecution of the Jan 6 demonstrators. Zero about the weaponization of the executive agencies. Zero about the outright criminal behavior of the courts. Looks like I will not be voting again. I say raise the black flag and water the tree of liberty. The government is utterly corrupt and worse than most I saw in the third world. Do any of the sheep here understand that Biden nd the swampies have increased taxes by hundreds of billions by taxing 401k transactions? Sheep. Faux Conservative Asshole Alert:
Mike Miller of RedState.com writes another NeverTrump piece, this time claiming that the Kevin McCarthy failure to secure the House Speaker's spot is due to President Trump's waning influence over Republicans. Ah Mike, there you go again. It's whatever you have to tell yourself and everyone else to keep your Trump hate alive, asshole. Kevin McCarthy is in the spot he's in because of Kevin McCarthy. Peroid. And he deserves what he's getting, much like you and RedState. Posted by: Tracy at January 04, 2023 04:37 PM (x58Cx) 628
This is an important topic not getting the coverage that would be expected on Ace of Spades. Finally someone is trying to do something about the status quo. Where's the news and great writing and analysis.

Why does the McCarthy side continue to call votes if they don't have the votes? Can no one in his office do simple arithmetic?
