On a Less Serious Note: Remembering the “Pyramid Power” Fad

Pyramid Power - Living room.JPG

Ace is out re-charging this week, and I hope like heck he is embracing the awesome power of pyramids to re-energize himself.

[While I cannot state for certain that the man in the picture above is Ace, bookshelf experts agree that the bookshelf in the photo closely resembles Ace’s handiwork. - Buck]

If you are too young to remember the era of mood rings and pet rocks, another crazy fad from the 1970s was “Pyramid Power.”

Pyramid Power - 1.JPG

I was just a grade school kid at the time, but I still recall a store opening up at the mall that sold all sorts of pyramid products, which were supposed to have the power to keep razor blades sharp, prevent fruit from rotting, keep meat fresh, and otherwise “energize” whatever happened to be under the pyramid.

Maybe it’s time to bring back the pyramid craze!

Are you a gardener? You’ll certainly want to start germinating seeds under a pyramid. (Attention KT and the gardening thread.)

Pyramid Power - Germinating Seeds.JPG

Are you a bowler? Why wouldn’t you want to have your bowling ball energized with what some people believe to be “the life force in the universe.” Earl Anthony dominated the pro bowling tour in the 1970s. I’m guessing it was because he kept his bowling ball under a pyramid.

Pyramid - Bowling Ball Consolidated.JPG

You can be darned sure I’m putting my Rat-L-Traps and catfish bait under a pyramid before my next fishing trip.

Pyramid Power - Fishing Lures.JPG

And guys, don’t forget that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. If roses, chocolates, and lingerie have become Valentine’s cliches in your relationship, maybe you can try “energizing” your special gal with a pyramid over your bed this year!

Pyramid Power - Bed - Empty.JPG

Of course, there’s always the risk that she might want to, ahem, get energized on the bed without you…

Pyramid Power - Bed with Woman.JPG

SCTV even did a skit poking fun at the Pyramid Power fad. Look how young John Candy, Harold Ramis, Catherine O’Hara, and Eugene Levy were. Who knew they’d become such big stars?

Happy energizing, pyramid enthusiasts!

*** There was a sort of funny blog about old books and magazines. They noted that whenever they saw a picture of people in the 70s being served pancakes it looked like the people photographed were on the very cusp of some serious bow chicka bow bow action. That's how a lot of 70s pictures looked really, but I guess the pancakes amplified it.

114 The Leafs, under Red Kelly, put pyramids under their bench for a while.

||The Leafs lost the first two games in Philadelphia. Kelly needed something to energize his team and its fans. He chose a most unique strategy: Pyramid Power.

“Casey (one of Kelly’s daughters) had bad headaches, so we tried whatever we could to get the headaches to go away,” he explained. “Andra (his wife) had read about the power of pyramids, so we tried a small one under her pillow, and her headaches disappeared. Andra suggested it for the team. I was ready to try anything.”

Prior to Game 3 at Maple Leaf Gardens, without the knowledge of his players, Kelly placed five plastic pyramids under the Leafs bench. The brawl-filled contest saw Toronto outshoot the Flyers 52 to 28 and edge Philadelphia 5-4. Then, with the pyramids still a secret but still under the bench, the Leafs tied the series with a 4-3 Game 4 win.||

Posted by: Abzod at January 03, 2023 08:12 PM (HqRdV)

116 ||Back in Toronto for the sixth game, Kelly went public with his Pyramid Power strategy. “People don’t know why the pyramids in Egypt were built, or even how,” he explained to a room of reporters. “There always has seemed to be some strange waves given off by them. It has been proven that things shaped like pyramids can do strange and wonderful things. They can make miracles happen and that’s what we need against Philadelphia.”

“This was a do-or-die game for us, so we used the power of the pyramid,” Darryl Sittler later stated. “I took the six sticks I was going to use in the game and put them under the pyramid. Then, I stood under the pyramid. A lot of guys on our team saw what I was doing and soon each guy was standing under the pyramid.”

Tiger Williams was the last to take his turn. “Thank God I don’t play for Philadelphia! I’d hate to have to sit under Kate Smith!”||

123 ||Sittler had been held without a goal through eight playoff games that spring. That all changed in explosive fashion. Channeling the good vibrations, Sittler scored five goals and added an assist in a decisive 8-5 Toronto victory. His five-goal performance equalled an NHL playoff record set by Maurice Richard in 1944.

The Toronto coach enlisted Pyramid Power again prior to Game 7 in Philadelphia. Kelly had a 12-foot-tall pyramid placed in the middle of the Leafs dressing room. But the Flyers once again trotted out Smith to bring good fortune to their team. It worked. While the Leafs had pushed the Flyers to the limit, the dream came to an end. The Flyers overcame the Leafs and their Pyramid Power for a 7-3 win.

“I was trying to do some stuff to distract things away from Harold Ballard saying things about the club. I was trying to get the guys thinking hockey and never mind the other stuff and Kate Smith. Pyramid Power caught everyone’s attention, especially after Sittler put his sticks under there and he got all those points. Suddenly, everyone bought into it and it grew bigger from there.”||

All the pyramids had been looted clean by something like 1000 BC. One thing about the Egyptians - they had a prosaic view on the Pharoah's religion and looted the tombs nearly at once. Tut's only survived intact because it was a lame-o one, forgotten, and nearly buried by a later tomb's entrance.

203 Pull quote from an Insty post:

It’s messy, and Democrats are mocking it. Of course, Democrats all voted in lockstep for the same guy. Maybe the GOP should tell them, “this is what democracy looks like.” Then again, the traditional approach would have been for McCarthy to meet quietly with the Freedom Caucus and promise them enough to win their votes. It seems like he could have done that quite easily — most of what the Freedom Caucus wants is popular with GOP voters generally. Is the problem that what the Freedom Caucus wants is unpopular with the GOP donor class? And, of course, it’s harder to make deals when there are “overriding trust issues.”

That's not going to happen, the Democrats are just going to sit back and enjoy the top tier performance of The Aristocrats emanating from the GOP.

What will happen is either McCarthy withdraws and they elect a milquetoast sock puppet or McCarthy basically tells the caucus they will run the joint and he will just be a front man.

460 My Air Force roommate had one of those pyramids that was supposed to keep razor blades sharp. He kept his razor under it on his desk in the room. Every couple of days I swapped the blade with a new one while he was out, so as far as he could tell, it worked. This went on for weeks, with him telling everyone about how the pyramid really worked great. After a couple of months I got bored, and quit changing the blade. After another week or so, he shut up about how great the pyramid worked, and soon after it disappeared. I never told him what I had done. Hi Tim, wherever you are!

Yeah that's the story I read too, sounds plausible but as you note there are a lot of metallic elements that do not have an "ium" ending so...
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 03, 2023 09:38 PM (0hOvj)

the Brits claim that there was some agreement to propose names for all newly discovered elements (may just have been metals) ending in "ium". Which was broken, or at least bent, when the American name for element 13 dropped the 'i".

If you look at most of the lanthanide and actinide "rare earth" metals, and some other elements as well, their names do include the "ium" termination.

The way it works is that metals known to the ancients are spelt similar to their old Greek, Latin, German or English names as far as symbols go. Newer metals follow the -ium ending. Plutonium, Uranium, Radium, Technetium, Aluminium, Gallium, Indium. The last 3 are in the Boron Group.
