Media: Exercise and Fitness Are Racist Now
Also: RAZZZIST GAINZZZ

Time Magazine: Exercise is founded in white supremacy, you know.

whitesupremacyexercise.png

BY OLIVIA B. WAXMAN

How did U.S. exercise trends go from reinforcing white supremacy to celebrating Richard Simmons? That evolution is explored in a new book by a historian of exercise, Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, author of the book Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession, out Jan. 2023.

...

Your book Fit Nation starts out by talking about how fat was something to aspire to and that was a sign of wealth and healthiness. How did Americans go from a mentality of "fat is good" to "skinny is better?"

One of the things I set out to do in this book is to look at the change in how we think about our bodies and what's considered attractive. Until the 1920s or so, to be what would be considered today fat or bigger, was actually desirable and actually signified affluence--which is like the polar opposite of today, when so much of the obesity epidemic discourse is connected to socio-economic inequality and to be fat is often to be seen as to be poor.

How did that happen? Well, in a moment when actually there wasn't a lot of access to caloric foods, to be fat showed that you could afford these things that were out of the reach of most people and also you could afford to rest, like you weren't out there doing manual labor all day. As that caloric food became more accessible, and as more people were doing sedentary white-collar work and had access to cars and leisure, somebody who could resist those caloric foods, exercise, and have a thin body, was seen as more desirable.

What's the most surprising thing you learned in your research?

It was super interesting reading the reflections of fitness enthusiasts in the early 20th century. They said we should get rid of corsets, corsets are an assault on women's form, and that women should be lifting weights and gaining strength. At first, you feel like this is so progressive.

Then you keep reading, and they're saying white women should start building up their strength because we need more white babies. They're writing during an incredible amount of immigration, soon after enslaved people have been emancipated. This is totally part of a white supremacy project. So that was a real "holy crap" moment as a historian, where deep archival research really reveals the contradictions of this moment.

The article was widely jeered.

"Honestly, I want them to keep pumping articles like this out to eviscerate every remaining shred of their credibility and perceived legitimacy," British rapper Zuby tweeted. "It doesn't anger me at all. It's so goofy I consider it satire."

Ed Latimore, a former heavyweight boxer, tweeted, "First math was a tool of white supremacy. Now it's exercise. Pretty soon, food is gonna be a tool to continue systemic racism oppression."

At about the same time, Scientific American decided to tweet out a fresh link to a 2020 article of theirs in which they claimed that the concept of obesity itself is "racist."

scientific_american_obesity_racist_12-28-2022.jpg

The article claims that no doctor should ever tell a black woman to lose weight. Even if she's morbidly obese; even if she's diabetic.

Because, Racism against Black Women's Bodies.

Brett T at Twitchy wrote:

It turns out this was published in 2020, but Scientific American thought they'd tweet it out again. Sabrina Strings and Lindo Bacon explain that "prescribing weight loss to black women ignores barriers to their health."

Black women have also been identified as the subgroup with the highest body mass index (BMI) in the U.S., with four out of five classified as either "overweight" or "obese." Many doctors have claimed that Black women's "excess" weight is the main cause of their poor health outcomes, often without fully testing or diagnosing them. While there has been a massive public health campaign urging fat people to eat right, eat less and lose weight, Black women have been specifically targeted.

This heightened concern about their weight is not new; it reflects the racist stigmatization of Black women's bodies. Nearly three centuries ago scientists studying race argued that African women were especially likely to reach dimensions that the typical European might scorn. The men of Africa were said to like their women robust, and the European press featured tales of cultural events loosely described as festivals intended to fatten African women to the desired, "unwieldy" size.

Strings has also published a book entitled, "Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia," if you want to know more.

All of this "Healthy At Any Size" propaganda comes on the heels of a Fatfluencer who just proved that no, you're not "Healthy At Any Size," because she died of cardiac failure at the very young age of thirty-seven.

At her heaviest, she had been over 800 pounds. She had lost weight and gotten down to 400, but living with so much strain on her heart and organ had take their toll.

But Healthy At Any Size, you guys!

healthyatanysize.jpg

Jamie Lopez, the founder of a Las Vegas salon for plus-size women and a model for the "body positivity" movement, died last weekend at age 37.

Lopez, according to TMZ on Monday, was hospitalized for heart complications. Her salon, Babydoll Beauty Couture, which became the center of a reality television show on WE tv, published a statement on Instagram announcing her death.

"We ask, on behalf of the Babydoll family, that you allow us time to process this tremendous loss," the statement read. "Please keep our Babydoll family & team lifted in your hearts and prayers."

Her show, "Super Sized Salon," which launched this summer, only lasted a single season before the main star's death.

At her heaviest, Lopez weighed 846 pounds and designed her company while confined to bed. She lost 400 pounds to turn her dream into reality.

More at Instapundit.

Matt Walsh pointed out that it's only recently that women have begun eating themselves into gargantuan proportions based on this "Fat is Healthy" delusion. He predicts that Lopez will not be the last Fatfluencer dying before age 45.

But no matter how many Healthy At Any Size women die young, the media will continue repeating: "Healthy At Any Size! Healthy At Any Size!"

The media likes to pretend it's "pro-science," but when members of the leftist coalition begin making wildly anti-scientific claims -- such as leftwing obese women claiming that obesity has no linkage to disease -- the media not only refuses to rebut these false claims, but actively assists in spreading the false "science."

Might as well make this a GAINZZZ/New Years Resolution thread.

I know one resolution for myself: I have to start stretching every day. I let my legs get so tight and cramped up that they pulled my back out of whack.

How about you guys? GAINZZZ? REZZZOLUTIONZZZ?

"Memoir of a Murderer"

The story concerns a retired serial killer who is suffering from dementia. He recognizes that his daughter's new boyfriend is a serial killer. Can he stop the serial killer before his dementia stops him?

Lots of twists. Good acting. Good directing. Ramps up the tension very effectively. Well worth a watch.

18 I had three weeks where I simply stopped all exercise. This was the trip to Atlanta, the cruise, and then the week at the in-laws. I'm back, and I'm going to get back into it.

I had my first feeling of muscle fatigue in forever just by doing my arm exercises on Tuesday. It's funny how when you get into it, the feeling of fatigue just doesn't appear with a regular, moderate schedule.

In terms of stretching, I do yoga about three times a week, and it's always only focused on my hamstrings. It really bothers me how tight my hamstrings are, and I just want to make a concerted effort to lengthen them so I can reach my toes without feeling like the back of my legs are going to explode.

The problem is mostly just getting my diet back under control. It's slowly happening, but I still struggle with the "hungry, or just bored" problem.

I'm just her brother, so I just nod along.

But it's funny because both of her older brothers (myself and my older brother) work out regularly and have some levels of muscle definition. My older brother also got prime covid (he lives in NYC) in something like March of 2020, was laid out for 3 days and couldn't get up from bed, and he's as fit as ever.

>>I'm here to tell you that you don't lose your Gainzzzz by being out of the gym for a week.

The training effect and Gainz don't dissipate after a short interval of a week and in fact, if you are blasting it for a long interval, a week off will only benefit you.

The trick is to get back to blasting.

74 browndog, I've found that the rest periods work better for some than for others. My husband is a workhorse body type that really needs daily physical activity, and my daughter loves volleyball. She had scheduling issues that prevented her normal pre-tournament workouts and I advised her to try resting up for it. She was completely off on her timing. My volleyball game was always upped massively with two days' rest. I guess she takes after my husband.

They also said if anyone says they are starving on that diet “ they are crazy.” I’m here to tell you I felt starved. So instead of crunching my way thru the cabbage product I made I decided to blender it. It was much more appetizing. I have maintained 7 off. Next week I will do a modified green cleanse and start my exercising. It is one thing to change the way I eat but that alone will not give me the results I want/need. I found an elliptical to purchase. I need to lose 60 and I will accomplish my goal. I need to because I hurt. So that’s that. Happy New Year everyone 🎉

133 So my pre-Christmas weight was 207. I'm 6'2" so 207 doesn't sound like a lot. I should weigh around 180~190. So out come the cook books and online research to develop a better diet (apparently I'm a carb junkie). Gonna get creative with chicken, fish and veggies. Plus it's cheaper than buying new clothes. Good news is that the gym at my apartment is never crowded at 6am.

134 The problem is that we can't rationally talk about any of this. The truth is that it is typically harder for women to lose weight. It's a natural thing, to help carry pregnacies to term. But we can't talk about sexual differences. Maybe black women are more prone to weight gain. But that would mean talking about racial differences. That's not allowed. And both sexes tend to have problems losing weight as they age. That's due to the loss of muscle and lower hormone levels.

My brother Joel had diabetes. As a result he had neuropathy, and commonly had stabbing pains in random parts of his body, like red-hot needles jammed into his feet, or legs, or back or ears, or whatever. So bad he cried out in pain -- and this is a man who ignored his inflamed appendix until it burst, so he can take the pain.'

He told us that he was doing great, blood sugar tests were fine, the medicine was maintaining his levels well.

Going through his stuff for paperwork I found a letter from his doctor earlier this year, expressing deep alarm that he was not managing his diet well and that they would need to take more drastic measures.

Yeah, this is the brother who died this month, my best friend and closest person on earth.

I guess what I am saying is TAKE THE HELL CARE OF YOURSELF because the people you leave behind will be horrified, crushed, and gutted trying to understand why and what they could have done better. Do it for them, if not for yourself. Please.

No. Putting cabbage in a blender does not make it "more appetizing." It turns it into green sludge.

You want it more appetizing, ferment it with various spices, and put it on good sausages (or all by itself). Make yourself sauerkraut, kimchi, and cole slaw by fermenting.

151 Ok. I'm gonna say it. I actually fantasize about eating everything and anything I want, all day long.

I fantasize about getting to the point where I simply don't care anymore about my weight, health, image and just say fuk it all I'm eating everything I like all the time, any time.

Then, I gain a few pounds, everything hurts, guilt from lack of exercise rolls over me, and I'm back to " whoa baby, dial it back before it's too late".

I sustained a concussion falling off a road bank while xc skiing two weeks ago and Im still affected.
All I can think of is eating and feeling guilty about it., because I can't move enough to counter the calories at the moment.

When will peace come in this battle? I'm sick of it.

The second is that I've decided to buy from the local grocery as much as possible. The big market is a 46 mile round trip and I spend too much there. The local market seems to cater to folks on a fixed income. (Except for brisket. Easiest place in the world to get a whole brisket). I'm going to eat simplier and start eating out of my pantry more.

In this case along with eugenics as a whole I would almost grant them their hysteria, it cannot be overstated how evil the progressives were to the core.

They viewed damn near everything as a struggle between races and they pretended that the races were damn near seperate species.

I have read extensively, none of this merits handing minorities a blank check and saying "you decide how much" but the progressive like a bad puppy needs his nose rammed through the shit on the rug I suppose.

Yeah its an exchange. That stuff might be great in the short term to salve cravings but later you pay and get into a rut where you can forget how good it feels to be out of it. I do it to myself, even though I know better and am allegedly old enough to have gained some wisdom.

There's a whole long list of crap I cannot eat without making myself absolutely miserable, but sometimes I do it anyway thinking "well just this once" then I pay for 4-5 days.

My dad quit smoking just cold turkey one day because he believed he should do so morally. Never another puff. But he had a pack of smokes in the garage, just one, in a drawer. He never went back to it but it was there just in case, you know?

He had nearly superhuman willpower though. I hoped by his age I'd be nearly the man he was when he died but so far I haven't measured up, years later.

Not exactly Jay...

Olympic lifters have an high degree of dorsiflexion.

Even Powerlifters can exhibit a high degree off dorsiflexion.

The issue is knee "slide".

Once you begin your descent into the bottom of the squat, fix the knee position. If you let your knees drift forward at the bottom, you lose tightness in your posterior chain...and can develop tendonitis in your knees.

Knees over toes is not contra-indicated.

239 Meh, they're kinda right on the exercise thing: some of the early buzz for exercising came from the progressives, wanting to (again) pick up some Prussian things to make a healthy, organized society. Remember all those old movies and shorts with the shaking machines and such? Those came from the wellness movement, which was very progressive.

I'm sure. I played from Little League through college and subsequently in adult leagues, as a pitcher most of the time (until my throwing elbow packed up with bone chips). I have problems now with my landing leg, because I had a long stride and a drop and drive delivery. Doing ~200 lunges per game/practice (no pitch count then) off a 15" high mound onto the same leg will do that.

And that's why I said "kinda right". The "movement" has Progressivism all over it. But just being healthy is not racist (nor is defining it as such). Nor any other sort of Marxism. It's just noting that in a world where everyone is a king by 1066 standards, you gotta get off your butt if you want to eat anything other than brussel sprouts and kale, and actually be healthy.

250 143 OK here's a not so happy cautionary tale.

Please.
