Top Virginia Math and Science Magnet School Refused to Tell Students They Were National Merit Finalists, Preventing Them From Putting That on Their College Applications, For the Sake of Racial "Equity"

It's Harrison Bergeron all the way down.

Virginia parents are outraged after a top-ranked high school allegedly delayed notifying students of national academic honors in the name of "equity," making them unable to account for the recognition in some college applications.

Fairfax County parent Asra Nomani joined "Fox & Friends First" on Wednesday to discuss why the school delayed the awards and the importance of meritocracy in the classroom.

"This year the entire controversy just blew up because the kids got their certificate, weeks after early college application deadlines, just dropped on their desks as if it was just another piece of paper," Nomani told co-host Todd Piro.

"And this amazing mom named Shawna Yashar started asking questions, just like every parent's got to do," she continued. "From issues of the drag queen story hours to indoctrination in the schools, this is another form of this race to the bottom that the schools are going through right now."

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) in Alexandria, Virginia, allegedly delayed academic awards for years, according to Nomani, because of its ploy to advocate "equal outcomes for every student, without exception."

The school has even implemented a policy awarding students a 50% just for showing up to class, and administrators have eliminated zeroes entirely.

The delayed awards in question are given by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which recognizes top-performing high schoolers nationwide. TJ received the 2022 honors in October but did not distribute them to students until a month later, after early-application deadlines had passed, according to Nomani. Nomani's son, a 2021 TJ graduate, was honored as a Commended Student in September 2020 but was never notified, she wrote in City Journal.

When Yashar, the mother who originally sounded the alarm on the school's delay, brought the issue to the forefront, she was met with pushback from the school, Nomani said.

"The school wanted to recognize students as individuals, not their achievements, as if the two had to be separated," she said.

Nomani wrote about this bizarre -- and highly litigable -- practice at City Journal.

For years, two administrators at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) have been withholding notifications of National Merit awards from the school's families, most of them Asian, thus denying students the right to use those awards to boost their college-admission prospects and earn scholarships. This episode has emerged amid the school district's new strategy of "equal outcomes for every student, without exception." School administrators, for instance, have implemented an "equitable grading" policy that eliminates zeros, gives students a grade of 50 percent just for showing up, and assigns a cryptic code of "NTI" for assignments not turned in. It's a race to the bottom.

An intrepid Thomas Jefferson parent, Shawna Yashar, a lawyer, uncovered the withholding of National Merit awards. Since starting as a freshman at the school in September 2019, her son, who is part Arab American, studied statistical analysis, literature reviews, and college-level science late into the night. This workload was necessary to keep him up to speed with the advanced studies at TJ, which U.S. News & World Report ranks as America's top school.

Last fall, along with about 1.5 million U.S. high school juniors, the Yashar teen took the PSAT, which determines whether a student qualifies as a prestigious National Merit scholar. When it came time to submit his college applications this fall, he didn't have a National Merit honor to report--but it wasn't because he hadn't earned the award. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a nonprofit based in Evanston, Illinois, had recognized him as a Commended Student in the top 3 percent nationwide--one of about 50,000 students earning that distinction. Principals usually celebrate National Merit scholars with special breakfasts, award ceremonies, YouTube videos, press releases, and social media announcements.

But not at TJ. School officials had decided to withhold announcement of the award. Indeed, it turns out that the principal, Ann Bonitatibus, and the director of student services, Brandon Kosatka, have been withholding this information from families and the public for years, affecting the lives of at least 1,200 students over the principal's tenure of five years. Recognition by National Merit opens the door to millions of dollars in college scholarships and 800 Special Scholarships from corporate sponsors.

I learned--two years after the fact--that National Merit had recognized my son, a graduate of TJ's Class of 2021, as a Commended Student in a September 10, 2020, letter that National Merit sent to Bonitatibus. But the principal, who lobbied that fall to nix the school's merit-based admission test to increase "diversity," never told us about it. Parents from earlier years told me that she also didn't tell them about any Commended Student awards. One former student said he learned he had won the award through a random email from the school to a school-district email account that students rarely check; the principal neither told his parents nor made a public announcement.

...

"Keeping these certificates from students is theft by the state," says Yashar. Bonitatibus didn't notify parents or the public. What's more, it could be a civil rights violation, says local parent advocate Debra Tisler, with most TJ students in a protected class of "gifted" students, most of them racial minorities, many with disabilities, and most coming from immigrant families whose parents speak English as a second language....

In a call with Yashar, Kosatka admitted that the decision to withhold the information from parents and inform the students in a low-key way was intentional. "We want to recognize students for who they are as individuals, not focus on their achievements," he told her, claiming that he and the principal didn't want to "hurt" the feelings of students who didn't get the award.

Sue them. Sue them personally, if possible.

Related: Yale set up an illegal system to make sure its board of trustees contained no actual alumni, just handpicked administrators who will bless whatever Yale's administrators choose to do. A judge has okayed a lawsuit to stop this practice.

A judge recently ruled that a lawsuit may proceed against Yale University that challenges administrators' decision to yank a pathway for alumni to gain leadership roles at the Ivy League institution.

Connecticut Superior Court Judge John Burns Farley ruled Dec. 15 against completely accepting Yale's motion to dismiss, stating the plaintiffs, two Yale alumni, appear to have standing to sue as third-party beneficiaries of the institution.

...

Now the only way to become a trustee is to be nominated by the Alumni Fellow Nominating Committee, run mostly by administrators, Ashe said.

"I want to make sure future alumni have the right to run if they so desire and they don't have to be vetted through some secret committee of the alumni association," he said. "They have set up a system to, in effect, insulate themselves from true alumni participation."

He said the decision to end the petition process was "done in secret, there was no consultation with any alumni, and the process they used was out of Putin's playbook."

...

Meanwhile, Yale "faces all sorts of issues," he added, citing concerns such as the protection of free speech on campus, affirmative action controversies, and more.

It's almost as if "experts" are engaged in a corrupt conspiracy against everyone else, and fear that their "expertise" will wilt and dissolve under the slightest scrutiny from supposed non-"experts," thus requiring heavier and heavier handed censorship and gatekeeping to prevent that scrutiny from ever taking place.

That's funny. I should tell her about Jeremiah O'Callaghan, a 19th century Irish priest who was basically run out of the Church for standing by the Biblical teaching that usury was a sin.

He rates a chapter in John Michell's wonderful book Eccentric Lives, Peculiar Notions, where he has this to say: "By the time O'Callaghan came along to challenge it, the practice of taking interest on loans had become so rooted in society that to preach against it was little more than a waste of breath. He was one of those people who are in the right, and know it and can prove it, but have the bad luck to be born in an age when no one wants to hear about it."

She attends a very good, small town public school that offers advanced classes that are essentially college classes. And she will get college credit for them. The teachers and administrators live in the community and we see them in the stores, gas station, restaurants, and church. Small Town, Indiana surrounded by farms. Alissa Azar, a well-known Antifa "journalist", who is still facing riot and assault charges in a suburban county, was arrested a couple of days ago on theft and related charges in Portland. She was held in jail overnight.

Back in August, some Antifa types decided to harass some street preachers in downtown Portland. A local conservative journalist was filming this, and was assaulted by a couple of Antifa-types. Azar grabbed his videocamera, was told to give it back, and decided to walk off with it instead.

The amusing thing is that the Soros prosector in Portland is terrified of having to face reelection in a couple of years, given a swing to the right in the Portland electorate, and prosecuting Antifa-types is low-hanging fruit, since they are widely despised in Portland now. She is in trouble.

You'd think she'd get a new hobby at this point.

157 I thought Muslim loans worked by the loan giving entity getting a share of the enterprise.

So if you are selling rugs, and you need a bigger store, they'll give you the money to buy a bigger store and get 10% or whatever share of the business - then sell it back to you later instead of interest.

The interesting part of this sort of arrangement - the loan giving entity has to be very interested in the success of who they give the load to. If Ahmed's Rug Emporium goes out of business the First Bank of GoatFuckistan gets nothing.

It's not like they could have gotten into any college they wanted because the whole system is rigged, as the Yale/NC SC case has shown.

Any Ivy League college already doesn't care about this, they only want a "diverse" student body.

"Psshaw, having 100-1000 National Merit Scholars in freshman class, please, we have 10 Trans, 50 gay, 50 lesbian (the bad kind, *cough, fat, *cough), and 20 asexual, including 10 trans-dwarf, that's what makes us 'diverse'."

I think a lot of people believe in lots of things that aren't so. One of the most misguided one's is that the Lord isn't discerning.

Take, for instance, the issue at hand. Do you think it is following the example of Christ for the state to evict a 85 year old widow for non-payment of property taxes and sell off her family home?

On the other hand, would it be following the example of Christ to allow meth cooks to squat in the church and sell their product in the sanctuary, or should one evict them?

So then, what is the Lord's "position" on eviction? You only may gain proper discernment of the Lord by reading what He has revealed. The laws and wisdom of men hold no sway over the discernment of the Lord.

Leads to many directions, including a rigorous exploration of bias, concepts of "pre test probability" (function of how intuitive the test hypothesis seems to be/common sense and the extent of prior support in the scientific literature etc. Great analysis of the relationship between ambiguity and number of end points and bias.

Of course he didn't invent skepticism, and many/most of us who were at all educated are aware of many logical, linguistic and statistical fallacies. But this is exactly the sort of thing that should be taught in the sciences, and social sciences that just isn't.

Well, in my eyes, Frankie Fabulous isn't the Pope, Benedict is. Frank is a scumbag, possible pederast and a heresiarch.

And, depending on the hard-assness of the Catholics you're encountering, they may still subscribe to the old teaching of "outside the Church there is no salvation." Not knowing them, I can't say.

It was not early Christianity. It is a central tenet of Christianity. Last I checked (despite Vatican Bank) it was still official orthodoxy.

Until quite recently (60yrs ago?) being anti-usury wasn't considered crankery. It was just academics (spit) and financiers who assumed it was an insane position.

It was a long very expensive centuries long all out assault by finance that finally bore fruit.

I will stipulate the anti-usury position is now considered total crankery if not a sign of severe mental illness by the vast majority.

US News is as corrupt as all the major colleges in their grade reporting. These days it's difficult to receive anything lower than a "B" at top tier schools, even if you don't bother doing the work.

Which is why this scandal is important for so many. High school is ultimately more important than college because hs performance gets you into a top school, where you can skate to good grades and a lucrative career in our Government-Intellectual Complex.

Bread pudding (bread cubes, sugar, eggs, half-and-half, cinnamon, mix and let soak overnight in a buttered dish, bake in the morning), along with bacon, scrambled eggs, and maybe a fruit salad. You can make the bread pudding and fruit salad the night before, bake the bacon in the morning, and use the fat to cook up a load of scrambled eggs while a couple cans of biscuits are baking.

Almost certainly.

In the extras for Aliens, he shows quite a bit of familiarity with firearms. And in the scene where Vasquez shoots the xenomorph in the head with a pistol, Jennette Goldstein couldn't handle the pistol, so Gale Ann Hurd (Cameron's wife at the time) put on the costume and did the scene because she was quite comfortable with pistols.

Better yet, the 4k fan remasters of the theatrical cut. I have 1080p versions of these on my hard drive and they're pretty good.

310 If everyone did their best, society as a whole would be so peaceful and be so fucking stupendously wealthy that a redistributive system would work.

The problem is... that's a fantasy. People don't do their best unless forced and cajoled to by external hardships and rewards.

Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.

311 > You now have large segments of society who are above criticism and have no incentive to improve themselves, no matter how much they fail
______________

The political class figured this out decades ago didn't they.

312 Government schools are child abuse, and you are paying for it. Worse, you are paying perverts to teach your own children to despise you.

Any #conservative who is pro-government school is the enemy.

313 I agree with the comments withholding sympathy for those NoVA parents. NoVA is populous, they are largely USG workers, and a high percentage of the population up there votes straight DEM, has for decades. NoVA drags Virginia blue, period.

So those NoVA parents..... suck it. You made your bed.

314 231. I believe it.

But like Catherine said, above, it's the affect on $ & makes funding so much more difficult.

315 I am making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $16,000 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.
Here's what I've been doing.. www.Payathome7.com

316 "What is wrong with Fairfax and Loudon counties and at what point do parents make a change that matters?"

They're filled with people on the federal government teat, or once removed. The Dems are the party of government, so...
Capture the leadership of the party and you have a solid bloc that will support whatever stupidity they can come up with. Only a few families are affected by this, so the scales will fall from not enough eyes to make a difference. Democrats will not oppose even ridiculous schemes because "solidarity". See: Fetterman.

317 Regarding National Merit awards, this wasn't about finalists or semifinalists, but the lower level of commended.

318 144 I was a National Merit Finalist in 1970 (I know, I am OLD!) and all it got me was a photo in the school yearbook with 4 other geeky types. I applied for scholarships but got nothing because my dad made "too much" money (translate - didn't have enough debt). The system has been broken for a long time.

Whippersnapper. I was a NM Finalist more than a decade earlier,(749 verbal, 693 math wasn't god enough for a National Merit Scholarship), but it got me a full tuition offer from Princeton. I decided that there was no way I could afford books and living expenses there, so I took a 75% tuition scholarship at the State school, where I could make enough in Summer to cover everything else. Graduated with a STEM degree a year late because I had to work through two semesters after my sophmore year (family financial issues) but the school held the scholarship. My family didn't "make too much" 😉. I had no debt, mainly because Uncle Sugar hadn't come up with "Easy Payments! to an education " scheme, yet.

320 Lots of 1970 National Merit Scholars here.
I was one. Got the scholarship! "Based on need."
Total value (not part of the newspaper article, which led the whole county to believe "free ride anywhere"), was based on the precursor to FAF statement. $1000. In $250 increments.

Once you had that, you were not getting anything else.

Twenty-five years later, shopping around ol' alma mater for a tutor for the kid, I got informed that by then any NM finalist went to school there free. Room and board and meal ticket included. Fooled me!
