Angela Nikolau, "the World's Most Extreme Roofer Girl."

Here she climbs to the top of a skyscraper's antenna.

The cobloggers are kind enough to be giving me the first week of January off. I might be around here and there, but I'm going to try to decompress.

Be good!

Or, at least: #BeBetter.

I think this bird is a Terminator.

Maybe this is even real.

Lads, treat your ladies right.

Lion backs down a couple of crocodiles.

But... here's what happens when a hippo charges three lions.

Hippos are very fast in the water.

Maybe you're not afraid of snakes. How about a snake covered in a fur of algea?

Got something on the line, here.

Picnic in the sky.

Economy class, third world style.

Don't mess with this yoked goat.

I don't understand this.

Bats!

Saw something odd today. We had bees attracted to one of the bird feeders. They weren't swarming, but there were about a hundred of them landing at it. Best as we can figure is that some of the seed fermented and the bees were going for it in the absence of flowers in the garden.

One of their girls didn't know what she was doing and I plastered her against the side. So the company downrates my motor remotely and I got caught with the slow influencer dipshit. So we left. 150 I would suggest propane, Notsothoreau, and Kerosene as a back up. Both work for heat, cooking and lighting.
I keep alcohol burners as a secondary back up, and I have some gasoline camp stoves as well.

If you are interested in coal, since it lasts forever and is a really good source of heat, find out where the local steam engine festival is and talk to them. I am nearly certain you have one somewhere near you.
They also sell stoves that are optimized for burning whole corn cobs.

hmmm, so salty dog is on a farm? There are groovy breeds that grow fast, but perhaps with issues. A neighbor raised ? (Charolais/something mix?) and I tried to help get his pregnant mom up but he lost them both. Problems with that breed and birthing. He went back to more dependable Black angus.

It might be that the marketing of black angus is more about their viability than their better meat ... but viability is important. I have never raised cattle, though I am on the cattle part of my grandparents' cattle/grain farm.

The good news is that deep snows are quite rare where you are. The wind chill is a bigger worry.

It may be unsightly, but blankets as curtains, stuff against walls, etc.

Your visit was a motivator for me, as I am doing all this. I just painted thick cardboard silver on one side and flat black on the other. That will go in windows.

Problem is sourcing wood, storing wood, moving wood, and maintaining a fire properly. But they work, not as well as they did before the EPA stepped to redesign them for the greater good, but they work.
A related alternative is a (wood based) pellet stove, but you need a power backup for the pellet feed mechanism.

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar (hOUT3) ~ Next year in Corsicana! ~ at December 30, 2022 09:17 PM (hOUT3)

159 I love wood stoves, but I'm in Kansas. Not sure about getting decent firewood out here. I do have a great tent heater that really is one of the best wood stoves I've owned. I've kicked around the idea of setting up a stove pipe in a room, so it could be used as a backup. But kerosene might work too. I do have kerosene lamps and that would give me a stash for those too.

I have natural gas here, so not sure if putting in propane makes sense. I am planning to spend money to properly insulate this place in the coming year (insulation under the floor would be nice.)

190 Regarding moos.... how much land do you have? Have you tested the soil? What grass(es) are currently growing? Where would you buy and store hay; how would you move it to where they can feed? Do you want meat only, or also milk (if the latter, look into calf-sharing)? Do you want to breed the moos? A pissy bull can be deadly and I've heard stories about some going bonkers without warning (probably true of any animal and especially intact males). OTOH I don't know that I'd want to trust AI - and most who do that use backup bulls anyway - so do you have a neighbor who is willing to rent a bull? 232 I linked the SOS video the other night. Think the UToob channel is "Tasting History". He does a very good job on SOS and there's quite a bit on WWII chow generally. He said he's going to do a collaboration video with SteveMRE1989 (?) where they examine and eat some K rations, or something.

One thing to add on the general topic. In the Winter War with the USSR, the Finns of course were quite adept and played their weaker hand very well, so well that when other external events loomed, Stalin was forced to cut a deal of sorts.

Anyway, one thing they did during the conflict was target the Red Army field kitchens, for raids and disruption. The poorly trained and led Red Army, in winter conditions, was degraded even further by the unavailability of hot food for many troops, which has a big effect on combat effectiveness.

There were three cattle on the property when I bought it. The owner sold them before I took possession. The cattle would be grass fed, with round bales as supplement. Right now I have the grassland in native Big and Small Bluestem. So in the information gathering stage now.

My primary crop would be rock, so animal husbandry with hardy types is the way to go. I may do what the local ranchers do, and plant corn for fall feed. I have a small area where that could work.

Stout fences would be the first step. There are plenty of local goats, sheep, llamas and many, many Angus to see how they thrive. Baby and tiny goats are so cute. But I pay even closer attention to you, Helena, when you talk about your chickens. My wife can tolerate chickens if I do all the work.

We need a law to not permit shopping carts with a flat wheel, that is so annoying, it probably makes people leave the store without their food, and they then die.

269 153...I just painted thick cardboard silver on one side and flat black on the other. That will go in windows.

I got some large- bubble bubble wrap and stuck it to the windows with a mist of water. It really helps, and let's light in, too.

I'm also working on thick, quilted covers for the windows. The 3M plastic works well, too.

Folks, please prepare for colder conditions. You do need backup heating.

271 219...Some Russian stoves include a bed and benches, others are just baffled masonry stoves.

We had two put in last winter (upstairs and walkout basement) last winter. Heck of a time with construction during winter, but our Mason gave us a nice discount.

We LOVE our Russian stoves. Upstairs one has an oven on the side. Learning to cook in it. Of course, potatoes in the coals of the burn chamber is fast and easy.

272 I am making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $16,000 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.
