73 Degrees Below 0NT

I hope all of y'all are staying warm tonight, since according to the news the entire country is freezing solid because of global warming. Here, take off your coat and come warm your tootsies by the fire.

Fire.png

Going down to 10 degrees tonight here in East Texas, with wind chill below zero. Not a patch on what some of y'all have, but cold enough. Montana registered 73 degrees below yesterday. I've spent the day preparing, winterizing the RV, mulching the roots of the fruit trees. Those that are dormant will have to make do with that, but I also erected plastic tenting around the citrus trees and heated the tents with a halogen light. Hope it works.

Have any of you had to make any special preparations for the cold?

The Soft Bigotry Of Low Expectations

The War on Merit Takes a Bizarre Turn

Last fall, along with about 1.5 million U.S. high school juniors, the Yashar teen took the PSAT, which determines whether a student qualifies as a prestigious National Merit scholar. When it came time to submit his college applications this fall, he didn’t have a National Merit honor to report—but it wasn’t because he hadn’t earned the award. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a nonprofit based in Evanston, Illinois, had recognized him as a Commended Student in the top 3 percent nationwide—one of about 50,000 students earning that distinction. Principals usually celebrate National Merit scholars with special breakfasts, award ceremonies, YouTube videos, press releases, and social media announcements.

But not at TJ. School officials had decided to withhold announcement of the award. Indeed, it turns out that the principal, Ann Bonitatibus, and the director of student services, Brandon Kosatka, have been withholding this information from families and the public for years, affecting the lives of at least 1,200 students over the principal’s tenure of five years. Recognition by National Merit opens the door to millions of dollars in college scholarships and 800 Special Scholarships from corporate sponsors.

The article also mentions that the school has a policy that seeks “equal outcomes for every student, without exception.” I can't think of anything more horrifying in education (that's a lie. There are more horrifying stories in education in the news every day. I can't think of a more horrifying policy for a school to have). If you have kids, get them into a private school that keeps parents involved and has a transparent curriculum or home school them. Please.

Disgusting

Church Erases Jesus & Nativity in Christmas Carol, Replaces Them With “Queer” People

God rest you also, women,
who by men have been erased,
Through history ignored and scorned,
defiled and displaced;
Remember that your stories too,
are held within God’s grace.

God rest you, queer and questioning,
your anxious hearts be still,
Believe that you are deeply known
and part of God’s good will
For all to live as one in peace;
the global dream fulfilled.

I wish I was kidding. Those are the actual lyrics. As the article says, “Very important for the new religion to try to wear the skin of the old. Having ripped out the Gospel, naturally”

The worst thing to happen to Christianity in the last century is the idea that somehow being Christian means being nice and not offending anyone. God commanded his followers to spread the truth, not “your” truth, and while we are given baelines of personal behavior, and charged with treating other with love, nowhere does it say that we should be accepting of sin or make excuses for sinful behavior. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” requires acknowledging the sin, and recognizing it as such. It doesn't mean corrupting the gospel to avoid hurting someone's feeling by calling out sinful behavior.

Former Concentration Camp Secretary, 97, Convicted of Nazi War Crimes

A 97-year-old woman who worked as a Nazi concentration camp secretary was convicted on Tuesday for her role in the murder of thousands of people in what could be one of the country's last trials for World War II crimes.

The district court in the northern town of Itzehoe handed Irmgard Furchner a two-year suspended sentence for aiding and abetting the murder of 10,505 people and the attempted murder of five people, a court spokesperson said.

I don't know what to say about this one. There should be absolutely no leniency for actual Nazis, camp guards, SS officers, anyone who was actively involved in running the death camps. No question. What I'm not sure of is if a girl who worked in the secretarial pool for a year as a teenager falls into that category. In this case it looks like the court thinks she does.

Youth Today

10-year-old accused of killing mom makes court appearance

The boy initially told police that the Nov. 21 shooting was an accident, according to the criminal complaint. But later he said he intentionally aimed at his 44-year-old mom before shooting her because he was upset that she woke him early and did not buy him something he wanted, according to the complaint.

The boy was charged as an adult last month with alternate counts of first-degree intentional homicide or first-degree reckless homicide.

It also says that the boy has mental health issues. The whole thing is horrifying, but the part I don't understand is charging him as an adult. He's 10. If he's convicted, are they going to put him in general population at the regular state pen? Of course not. At least the answer better be of course not.

Neat

I wish I could play with the actual program and not just this clip of it.

What's fascinating is that the first item to eliminate all of the items it can kill...inevitably loses.

This is the TJ School of Science and Technology.
Yet this policy is a direct attack on basic science. Biology shows that each person is unique because our DNA is different from any other person's. Even identical twins are distinct, and become more different as they grow (none have identical meals and identical hours of sleep at identical times, etc.).

68 The worst thing to happen to Christianity in the last century is the idea that somehow being Christian means being nice and not offending anyone.
It's not the worst, but it's part of it. Progressivism, which is a form of Marxism, took Christianity and perverted its virtues into a similar-looking, but altogether different set. Part of that was removing the governor (moderation) from things like "tolerance" or "charity" and turning them into Law, rather than Gospel.

Progressivism is a Christian heresy with an end goal (nearly accomplished!) of replacing actual Christianity, then bringing about their heaven on earth with the sheer power of their minds: reason and Science!
That takeover - especially since it wears the skin suit of Christianity - is the source of all our discontent.

158 Given the timeline I doubt Vlad did much personal blood-spilling while working for state security.

And he has been very supportive of religion as part of his overall platform pushing traditional values. This whole thing predates the current unpleasantness by a long while, and seems nothing like Stalin's desperate embrace of the church and historical Russian heroes in 1942.

Was just reading a report on persecution of Orthodox in central/eastern Europe (alleged persecution). Russians don't pack the churches, but they do mostly view the church as a positive aspect of the culture.

And the religious divide between Orthodox and other flavors is a very live issue in Ukraine, whose current borders (well, nominal, not actual when it comes to the east) encompass Catholic and Orthodox regions who historically have not enjoyed, shall we say, warm relations.

Here in the "banana belt" of Alaska they're typically buried about 10 feet deep (for an honest job... mileage may vary with cheapjack Pipeline-era construction).

Further north that won't work, because you hit permafrost when you dig below a certain depth, which is counterproductive. Often water and sewer lines are run in heated utilidors (in the areas where they actually have running water and sewers).

Typically I've based them around Raspberry Pi's and pre-built iso's from various sources.

Arcade Punks is where you can get the iso's.

I've now branched out into Jamma systems because Raspberry Pi's are not available for reasonable prices.

You can get a pre-made cabinet and complete Jamma Game system off of ebay.

I don't know if we are allowed to post links to ebay but you can do a search for, Pandora's Box DX Saga 5000 Arcade kit for the arcade system and bartop arcade cabinet for the cabinet.

Just an addition to your discussion on terms - I don't see any way Russia accepts anything less than full incorporation of the 4 districts they added after Feb, plus Crimea. In fact, it would be illegal to give them up. And I don't see U as having enough offensive pop to break that.

I also think Russia will eventually take Odessa and Kharkov and incorporate them to manage new Ukraine better. This also gives land access to the little sliver that declared for them on the West side. U found a reason to shell them a bit just for the hell of it. Everything on the R side of the Dneipr is likely gonna go to R.

I also wonder if Poland might be offered a slice just to get them off the hate Russia bandwagon somewhat. The problem with taking all of U means they still border NATO at least while it lasts.

308 Oldcat my current WAG would be Donetsk/Lugansk/Crimea status as Russian either formally recognized or pretty much established, de facto (Crimea was already in this status). Trick here is a cordon to the west and north - it's apparently a secret in the west but the Ukes have been shelling these areas since 2014. Thousands of (civilian) casualties later, no way the locals or Moscow let that continue.

I was fairly shocked by the Zaporozhe and Kherson annexation move. These didn't figure into the Minsk agreements and they don't have nearly as much political traction in Russia as D & L - or Crimea - naturally have. Mixed areas. WAG here is hard - total Russian withdrawal not inconceivable, more likely some division of the territories and population exchange (much of which has already occurred).

Can't see Ukraine making any kind of meaningful, even paper, commitment re neutrality or NATO (not politically viable, not now). So that will be left unresolved. "De-Nazification" will be nowhere in any deal, nor will "reparations" from Russia.

309 There should be absolutely no leniency for actual Nazis, camp guards, SS officers, anyone who was actively involved in running the death camps. No question. What I'm not sure of is if a girl who worked in the secretarial pool for a year as a teenager falls into that category. In this case it looks like the court thinks she does.

323 In the preface to "Stalin's War", the author illustrates the spelling conventions he will adopt for the book by citing the 4 different spellings of Lvov/Lviv/forget, the Kraut one/forget, the Polish one.

I was actually there, in Soviet times. Only place in the blue-eyed USSR that saw significant political unrest. Definitely had a different feel to it.

Beyond not knowing where it was on the map prior to Feb. 24, many cheerleaders seem to have little understanding of the history, including very recent history, of the area falling within the Soviet borders of "Urkaine". As Kindltot notes, there are Polish - and Romanian and Hungarian - claims or concerns in certain areas of the west. These lines on the map are "new" by regional standards.

Dressing the scrape with topical antibiotic is a good move, it il like daubing your own scrapes.
Check online that the type you have on hand is not toxic to cats.

It is a good start, by the way, when the cat gets into a cat fight and you want to keep ahead of an abscess. It will penetrate the skin a bit into the wound and sometimes is enough to avoid a vet visit for a drain. Daub it on, massage it, and get moist heat like a warm washcloth on it.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 22, 2022 11:34 PM (OTzUX)

I wasn't, Kherson is the bridge to Odessa which is heavily Russian. The land bridge is important because of the missile strikes on the Crimean bridge, plus denying Azov their old stomping grounds. It is also important since the aqueducts that supply Crimea with water were there and the U's would shut them off from time to time.

The Minsk agreements are dead - Merkel publicly saying they were lying about implementing them was shocking to anyone who believes in Intl relations, because even if you do it, you don't SAY it. So no EU or US will be involved in the peace at all.

I have read that a huge fraction of U industry GDP is in the area Russia has or likely will have. Mini U may not have the ability to be a threat going forward.

its a good idea to get an outdoor cat used to a pat-down check every so often. A forming abscess hurts and cats will squirm or bite when touched. otherwise it can open, close, and reopen several times before you notice it making the cat pretty weak from infection.

342 Oh I can see the major kinetic aspects of the war ending, and not too long from now. Ukraine is a basket-case, now welfare-dependent. Economy is never going to go anywhere seriously while major actions continue - with or without more Russian strikes on infrastructure.

D&L are not going back to Kiev rule. Crimea's not changing. So the Ukes will be bailing the ocean to no clear end, and in the conditions they have I can see them calling a halt.

This is why I was surprised by the Russian move to add Zaporozhe and Kherson oblasts. The two sides split control of the territory (mostly along natural geographic lines, which inhibit bold action by either). Sitzkrieg. But sort of borrowed trouble for Russia. No clear ethnic/political imperative to annex those areas, unlike others. And Kiev can't give them up.

But Odessa? That's a big bite to chew off. All depends on Russia's perseverance here I guess. I know of the Odessa Russian ethnic situation, but am guessing the Kremlin would like to wrap this up - while attaining the still attainable basic goals - sooner rather than later.

The "cordon" around southern Dontesk would cover some of the Azov coast. Mariupol is already *in* Donetsk. Complicated situation, but I'm guessing Uke desperation and Russian impatience will somehow result in these sticky situations being resolved - or a tacit modus vivendi emerging.

U desperation leads to longer war, and R isn't being impatient at all. They haven't even started using more than a fraction of the men raised with the last call for volunteers. They fought the first part of the war with less men than the U's had, and the numbers are reversing now.

One thing the U and EU and US have shown is that they don't want a modus vivendi of any kind. If they had the Donbas would still be part of Ukraine, if self governing as the Minsk Accords dictated.

Is this a Pauline Kael moment? Maybe...hence I want to here the argument...

That's why we blew the pipeline.

But that assumes Russia will just accept all the bullshit and let them off the hook. Selling goods and oil and gas to India, for resale to the EU at prices higher than the old deals to them and at ruinous costs to the EU may just suit them fine.

Wow. Glad I, uh... um, forgot (yeah, forgot, that's it) to tell UPS about the batteries included with some headlamps I sent to bro. They were in original retail packaging, so no real danger of shorting/ sparking. Mostly it was clothing, so that's what I told them...

UPS is the norm, but they ship FedEx and USPS too. But they won't touch DHL with a ten foot pole.

They'll ship ammo, happily. ORD/M, they'll follow all the rules, but they'll ship what the UPS store simply won't. I've become very loyal to them as a local business... they've earned it!

Its going to get colder tomorrow, but it's been colder, but also warmer. about 10 years ago half the days in january were 60 degrees, and a few years back it was 4 degrees on new years eve. Its been all over the map here, and its always been that way. In the 90's we had 3 or 4 winters with no snow at all, and the next year there were 19 snow storms. Climate change my ass, its what the frigging planet does.

470 Our beloved governor has put out a note that she is on top of the weather.
Also the power companies are telling her that they can't guarantee they will be able to supply electricity when cold or hot weather happens. Shutting down all fossil fuel plants and depending only on wind and solar won't do it. I doubt she cares, she is hell bent on going fossil fuel free in about 8 years, to save the planet. Shutting down power plants and not building any replacements seems to be good policy I guess.
