What is the focus of the class? Ask the instructor for his input. In general, I agree with others who suggest a .22 to start. You can work on all the fundamentals -- grip, sight alignment, trigger control -- without having to deal with recoil and recoil-induced flinching. And the ammo is a lot cheaper.

You can work on all the fundamentals -- grip, sight alignment, trigger control -- without having to deal with recoil and recoil-induced flinching. And the ammo is a lot cheaper.

True story. As I went to obtain my CCW, a couple was in the class with me. Younger kids. Maybe twenties. RO/teacher asked if we brought our handguns for the range portion of the test. Kids said yeah, we borrowed my mom's 380.

RO- have you ever fired a gun before?
Kids - no. Oh, and we don't have any ammo.

Kids actually went for a CCW with a shooting test without ever having handled a firearm before.

The RO and I locked eyes and shared a headshake.

A global logistics company. We had our regional IT meeting in the DFW area a few years back and my boss at the time said "we need to do something 'Texas style'" so we went to the range and followed it up with a steak dinner. We had folks from the Americas. The Columbians were AMAZED since they're barely allowed to carry knives.

There were 12 or 14 of us. We had to sit through a quick training class, then went into the range with several rented and some of the locals personal weapons. The whole experience was under $350, so the execs had NO issue with it.

Starting with a 22 is a popular idea but it's not a good idea in my opinion, if you plan to advance your gun training to the point where you're carrying concealed or using it for home protection. .22 is a waste of time and doesn't teach you what actual guns feel like when you have to fire them under duress.

Now, once you've figured out a few things about firearms and what role they'll play in your life, .22 is absolutely a fun, cheap plinking toy that you can shoot all day without going broke. It's just not a good first caliber unless you're 6 years old.

The caliber is less important than being able to understand how the pistol works, how to handle it safely, etc. You will have the class lecture portion first, demos, and then an opportunity to load and fire a rental. I like this advice, as someone who shot a gun for the first time about 2 years ago. I also think revolvers are a good place to start, but in keeping with blaster's advice, not snubbies. I have a K frame .38 Special revolver with a 4 inch barrel that I have always shot pretty well, and I'm not a "natural" shooter. I actually shoot it better than a similar K frame .22.

It's really really hard to guess what's going to feel comfortable or work well for you without being able to try lots of different guns.

279 Just finished watching two 8 episode series on Amazon Prime. The first, "The Peripheral", stars Chloe Grace Moretz and is a futuristic techno-thriller that had an interesting story and some decent acting and action. Medium-strength recommendation.

The second, "The English", stars Emily Blunt, and was garbage, boringly clichéd Western that couldn't be saved by a typically great performance by Blunt. It was bizarre, evil ugliness from start to finish, and relentlessly pounded the "whites bad; Injuns Holy and pure" line of ahistorical bullshit until I wanted to scream. Highly not recommended.

Once I did make the 11 mile trip to Warmego to get some OZ wine for the ole lady. She still has it , so not sure how good (or bad) it is.

Or, go the other way. Start with a matchlock, work her way up to a wheel-lock, then a flintlock, eventually move up to a percussion fired weapon. And then, a pinfire revolver, a rimfire, and finally, a centerfire metallic cartridge.

Honestly? Best teaching results I get with noobs. 1. Browning Buckmark Heavy Barrel. S&W Model 28-2, 4" bbl, 148 gr. wadcutters. Heavy guns hold steadier, recoil a bit less dramatically. Great confidence builders, those. THEN, it's 1911 or Glock O' Clock. And follow the path on those as to the student's preference after a few mags each.
