No, I mean the Non-EBTIDA earnings that a lot of companies - especially tech companies, but by no means exclusively them - put into their quarterly earnings press releases. It universally paints a rosy (or less-dreary) picture than the actual EBTIDA numbers that they have to report to the SEC.

Posted by: ... at December 21, 2022 02:43 PM (LH9+0) The problem with USD being fiat and the zero interest rates is that there was no market signals at all. The markets are all invested, commoditized and resold. Everything is leveraged because you make more money out of buying things on loans that you do holding or making things. The rate hikes are going to affect that, but at the moment there is some hysteresis in the system, with money on loan that has to go somewhere. When that momentum runs out, then all the loans come due, the system will lose a lot of value. That is why there is such a screaming going on about rate hikes. Classical economic theory has no response to the hole we are in. You raise rates to cool an overheated economy. ie, to fight inflation. This reduces capital investment and puts people out of work, reducing spending.
But inflation today is not caused by high wages since we have flooded the country with illegals for services, and we buy manufactured goods from overseas. The economy is not overheated, it is dying. Raise rates to kill it quicker. Lower rates and we live in the bubble a bit longer but the problem gets bigger. OK, there is one classical economic solution to a debased currency and it never ends well. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at December 21, 2022 02:50 PM (yy6mE) 111

Posted by: polynikes at December 21, 2022 02:45 PM (KLWiP) It's moving on one rule right now: 1. The big investment firms know they can't pull their money from the market, or the whole thing collapses (and with it, their fat paychecks). If individuals were investing their own money, the stock market would have fallen steadily for the last couple of years. There's no reason to invest in most companies on the exchange. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at December 21, 2022 02:50 PM (yy6mE) ++++ High wages is one cause - the "demand-pull" inflation, and interest rate raises are not limited to that. It helps in the other scenario (supply-side), too, by enforcing tighter credit and driving a fair amount of bankruptcy, which has the effect of reducing the money supply. But bankruptcy isn't allowed anymore and the government is spending like a bunch of drunken sailors on borrowed money that the Fed is monetizing to try to keep the federal fiscal environment from detonating. They can raise rates but without those rates curtailing the emission of new credit - and the fedgov is a huge emitter - it won't help as much as it needs to. Rates also still aren't high enough and the Fed isn't selling it's balance sheet with anything like the enthusiasm it needs to. On the topic of the Fed, I don't like how the currency changed when they moved to the new designs. Look at the Federal Reserve Seal on a piece of old currency (like a $1 bill) and it will tell you *which* Fed issued the note. On a piece of new currency, it just says "Federal Reserve System." In essence, they took the mint mark off when they did the redesigns a while back in the aughts.

When they tell us to eat bugs, the people will eat bugs, complain about but pay lots of money to eat bugs. We are entirely screwed. It doesn't matter what we do, who we elect, or what party we are. 134 To be honest, I wasn't aware of the employment number because I stopped paying attention to government number reporting years ago after stopping active trading in the market. I've always thought the numbers weren't worth the computer bytes they were calculated with. They only were used to move the markets.
Posted by: polynikes at December 21, 2022 02:54 PM (KLWiP) same here. And the only reason these numbers move markets is that even though everyone knows all the numbers are fake, they know that other people will all buy and sell based on the fake numbers that they don't believe, either. It's a giant self generating honeypot, and the players make money by leveraging the constant ups and downs. Reality has nothing to do with any of this, until it all collapses, of course. Which is now inevitable, the only question is how long it takes. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 21, 2022 03:00 PM (trdmm) 180

Businesses getting money does not pump directly into the economy the same way as "stimulus" checks, and they printed trillions for those. A lot of it to fake accounts.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 21, 2022 03:11 PM (0hOvj) Businesses kind of operate in a large loop with each other. Bankruptcy doesn't necessarily shut down a business (if it's due to debt load rather than the enterprise being nonviable) but does cause things to seize up as legal proceedings are worked through. And so dumping a bunch of money on them during bad economic times usually doesn't show immediate inflationary impact, though it can keep businesses with poor models or capital structure afloat longer. It's not uncommon for businesses to set on huge amounts of cash. Boss got the $1,400. AND $10K an employee. Do the math.
Dude. The 10 was not going in his pocket. I agree it was damaging too but that's not how it works, The money he got was to keep his business open (pay rent, utilities, employee benefits, etc). Was that a good solution? No. Does it harm the economy for the government to print money like that. Yes. Dude. The 10 was not going in his pocket. I agree it was damaging too but that's not how it works, The money he got was to keep his business open (pay rent, utilities, employee benefits, etc). Was that a good solution? No. Does it harm the economy for the government to print money like that. Yes.
That Fe'ral government NEVER should have done what they did, destroying the economy then injecting trillions into a give-away sweepstakes that only crippled supply lines and increased inflation and debt. BUT, if they were going to underwrite business stoppage, it should have been through backstopping business insurers since many policies have interruption of operations coverage. The paperwork and the company evaluations are already performed by the underwriter so the possibility of fraud is dramatically reduced. The point was to create huge opportunities for fraud and that is why they did what they did. I think we will move in the same direction Argentina has and try to muddle along with 50% - 75% inflation per year for several years. There will always be plans to "fix" it, and they will never work.
Posted by: Tom Servo at December 21, 2022 03:08 PM (trdmm) Argentina solved the problem sort of by pegging the argi Peso to the USD, and then screwed it up by allowing issuance of pesos outside of reserves. This led to the official rate against the USD and the "blue dollar" that was the actual market rate of pesos to USD on the street outside of the main Argentina federal bank They still use it: El Cronista, the main economic paper in Buenos Aires lists the current rates for different markets including what an Argentine business can get outside of the country. They used to list the price in Uruguay, for example https://www.cronista.com/MercadosOnline/dolar.html Posted by: Kindltot at December 21, 2022 03:32 PM (xhaym) 343
Additional revenue at lower ends of the wealth spectrum goes predominantly into consumption, at the higher ends it goes predominantly into investments. The former causes inflation in ordinary goods and services, the latter in asset prices.

It all adds up to a wicked brew of economic disaster ——————- The person I bought my business from got PPP loans, about $50k. She was shut down for about 2 weeks, and reopened with protocols to limit exposure based on what was known at the time. However, the business lost a ton of members because everyone was so freaked out by the doom messages. In fact, we haven’t recovered yet. I am praying this January people come back and feel better about it, but like clockwork, our government is sending out horrible messaging that we are all going to die again and people do listen to it. Now layer on the economy and people cutting back on “Fringe” to buy food. It’s stinky out there right now. I am doing all I can to retain my loyal customer base and attract new people, but this administration is throwing up barriers all over the place and they don’t even understand the ramifications, Posted by: Piper at December 21, 2022 03:36 PM (ZdaMQ) 355
