The Democrat-Controlled (for Now) House Ways and Means Committee Shreds The IRS' Guarantee of Filer Confidentiality and Releases Trump Tax Information

Lawless tyranny.

The House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday voted to release six years of former President Trump's tax returns. In November, the Supreme Court rejected a bid by Trump to prevent Congress from accessing his tax information, ending years of legal wrangling. It's not clear when the documents will be released, but the panel said it would take a few days to redact personal information, like Trump's Social Security and bank account numbers. The committee voted along party lines.

Republicans warned that there would be severe consequences for the release of the returns.

Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, the ranking Republican on the Ways and Means panel, warned in a press conference, "Longstanding privacy protections for all taxpayers have been compromised. Going forward, the majority chairman in the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee will have nearly unlimited power to target or make public the tax returns of private citizens--and not just private citizens: political enemies, business and labor leaders or even the returns of Supreme Court justices themselves."

Instapundit asks, If the government is no longer honoring its legal commitment to protect taxpayer confidentiality, should citizens file tax returns any longer?

This follows the January 6th Committee inventing out of a whole cloth a new power to make criminal referrals, which its allies in the Propaganda Media pretended was a real power that is sacrosanct in the Constitution.

Michael Tracy rips them:

Michael Tracey
@mtracey

What's being called a "criminal referral" by the Jan 6 committee carries just as much legal weight as a letter written in magic marker by Bozo the Clown. Has no basis at all in any statute or House rule, they just put out a Word document and made up a serious-sounding name for it

They didn't even attempt to invoke the one statutory authority they do potentially have at their disposal, the criminal contempt statute (2 USC s. 194). So they just wrote their equivalent of a long Substack screed, and hoped the phrase "criminal referral" would get people excited

Media trumpeting how this was the first "criminal referral" of a president in US history neglects to emphasize that the very manner of the "referral" is a whole-cloth invention of the Cheney/Schiff gang. So yeah it's technically true that nobody invented this fake action before

If you write a letter asking for the prosecution of Kermit the Frog, attach it to a rubber chicken, and mail to:

Department of Justice
950 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, DC 20530

It's possible that you also carried out the first such "criminal referral" in US history. Congrats

Example of the stupidity, courtesy of NBC. Yes, Trump does have the historic distinction of being the first president to be impeached twice. That's correct. But there's no such thing in this context as a "formal referral" by Congress for "potential prosecution." It doesn't exist

nbcnewsformallystupid.jfif

This item and countless others give the impression that Congress has had a formal "criminal referral" power at its disposal since 1789, but was just never moved to use it till now. In reality, no such power exists, which is why the committee invented this "informal" (fake) power

Also contrary to the suggestions of NBC and others, it wasn't "Congress" that took this action, it was nine individual members of the House acting in their individual capacity to send a letter. That's it. Members of Congress send approximately 17,000 joint letters every month

"But weren't they acting in their capacity as members of the Select Committee on Jan 6?"

Good question. Answer: "No." Because the resolution passed by a majority in the House to establish the Committee never even purported to vest them with any sort of "criminal referral" power

The resolution vested them with the power to issue a final report containing their "findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective measures." Here was the definition of "corrective measures." You'll notice: nothing about any heretofore unknown "criminal referral" power

Even if the resolution authorizing the Select Committee *did* purport to grant them with something called "criminal referral" powers, it's highly unclear the power could ever be wielded. But that's moot anyway, because the resolution didn't even purport to grant such power

So all the Committee members ultimately was add an exciting little "Criminal Referral" section to their report, and tell everyone this was a really big deal. Good news, High School kids: you have just as much legal authority to do the same thing in your next Book Report

But of course the Committee's most valuable asset of all is their partners, allies, and friends in the media class -- whom they knew would reliably perform their usual PR function in the same lazy and unscrupulous manner as always

No, they should not. But they will. And it's time to slap ourselves in the face with the cold, hard truth - we are not anywhere near the majority in the country.

Look around you - within a circle of people you know or do business with, at least half of them neither care about this or, if they heard the news, think Trump deserves it. And of the people who do care, there are not nearly enough to mount or perpetuate an 'income tax strike.'

The GOP knows it and doesn't care. Why should they? They ran on absolutely nothing and still people voted for them, deluded by the chimera of a 'red wave.' The GOP knows there is absolutely nothing they can do that will stop you voting for them.

Anyone who continues to support the GOP in any way at this moment is doing nothing more than resoling the boot stamping them in the face.

Meanwhile, congresspeople like Ilhan Omar can pay her lover hundreds of thousands of dollars from congressional accounts and that is okay.
Congresspeople can hire their kids for no show jobs and pay them with tax payer dollars and that's okay.
Congresspeople sitting at home due to Covid can claim per diems even though they aren't going anywhere and that's okay.

As someone pointed out above, with regard to tax resistance, there is no need for very many 'fellow countrymen' when the government takes out just enough resistance.

American citizens are rotting in DC jails and being tortured by guards in revenge for simply exercising the constitutional right of assembly. The GOP voted to award medals of bravery to the murdering scum who killed Ashli Babbit. A fucking US Senator screamed at police to execute people. And is anyone doing anything about it?

229 "IF they are printing all of the money they need, out of whole cloth, what are Taxes for? Seems to me, it's just to punish your citizens at this point."

yeah, even if there was a "tax strike", BigGov would just print trillions anyway. The tax would be via inflation. In fact most of the current deficit is "funded" that way.

Allegedly this MMT (magic money tree, modern monetary insaniT) would control inflation, the way Powell is doing with increasing interest rates. BUT we see that has not slowed Joe and Congress's profligate spending.

So people are wondering when Powell will "blink", since Congress will go to infinity ... and beyond with spending. If Powell does not blink, the economy may (finally) take a bigger hit than it has. And then of before then, Joe fires Powell. Hyperinflation is then possible.

It's getting worse, and it's going to get A LOT worse. Government will not hold itself accountable. Only the People can do that. James Madison said that ultimately, it is the vigorous and manly spirit of the American people that will hold Congress accountable, not some clause in the Constitution, not some court of unelected political hacks.

Smartest thing you can do is to get yourself to a Free State and keep it as free as you can as the death spiral continues. I have no idea what this one is going to look like, but I know it won't be pretty. But at least maybe some of us will finally get a little justice after decades of abuse.

Not really, having nukes did not prevent the Sov Union from splitting because for the most part, nukes are only useful at the state versus state level, not for civil war. But imagine how much it would transform American politics if they did. Imagine the GOP sending millions to "local gun clubs" or some BS to just cut $1,000 checks to gun owners. No explanation or justification; we're just gonna hand this money out because that's what we want to do. Imagine them just sending sacks of cash to any pack of righties with enough brain cells to fill out a few forms and establish a "community group." $1M to "The Museum of American Greatness" (which exists only on paper), or a local "Patriot House," which is just a clubhouse for wargaming nerds.
