Twitter Files 8: Twitter's Joint Propaganda Efforts With CENTCOM and the Pentagon

This is the least interesting tranche to me or any other conservative. It seems to be published chiefly to interest lefties.

Good luck with that. Lefties are champions of US government tyranny.

The new disclosures detail Twitter's active participation in CENTCOM/Pentagon propaganda efforts against Iran, China, Russia, and other miscreants.

While I don't object to propagandizing against foreign nations, it must be remembered that this propaganda is read by US citizens, too, so we are among the first to be infected by US-government-created disinformation.

In addition, a lot of this disinformation is specifically created for American audiences. It's not just incidental that US citizens get propagandized by covert US government disinformation; it's the whole point of it.

I speak specifically about lies the US government is spreading via covert accounts maintained by US government employees claiming that US drone strikes are perfect and kill only terrorists, and not children and civilians like you might hear from other sources.

All of this stuff is psyops towards the American population, not just the foreign populations of other countries. The lies about how few casualties our drones inflict on civilians is chiefly a pack of lies for US consumption -- the foreign countries drag the childrens' bodies out of the wreckage so they know this is bullshit and besides that, they are far less dainty about collateral damage themselves.

Do you think the Taliban cares about how much collateral damage a drone strike causes? They deliberately blow civilian up.

This is a talking point the leftwing American press has made an issue in America.

US government lies about our drone strike killing just the terrorist and no one else are intended to be consumed by the US voter. Specifically, the US Democrat voter who pretends to be outraged by collateral damage under Republican presidents and wants to be reassured that there are no collateral damage deaths under Pop-Pop Biden.

So no, these are not lies intended for a foreign audience and therefore, arguably, a legal exercise of propaganda against foreign populations.

This is, as usual, psyops directed at the US population by its corrupt government.

These disclosures also further erode the "Twitter is just a private corporation" claim.

We already know they're being paid by the FBI to delete tweets government bureaucrats don't like; here we see them acting as an arm of the Pentagon's psyops unit.

*How Twitter Quietly Aided the Pentagon's Covert Online PsyOp Campaign*
Despite promises to shut down covert state-run propaganda networks, Twitter docs show that the social media giant directly assisted the U.S. military's influence operations.

2. Twitter has claimed for years that they make concerted efforts to detect & thwart gov-backed platform manipulation. Here is Twitter testifying to Congress about its pledge to rapidly identify and shut down all state-backed covert information operations & deceptive propaganda.
3. But behind the scenes, Twitter gave approval & special protection to the U.S. military's online psychological influence ops. Despite knowledge that Pentagon propaganda accounts used covert identities, Twitter did not suspend many for around 2 years or more. Some remain active.
4. In 2017, a U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) official sent Twitter a list of 52 Arab language accounts "we use to amplify certain messages." The official asked for priority service for six accounts, verification for one & "whitelist" abilities for the others.
5. The same day CENTCOM sent the list, Twitter officials used a tool to grant a special "whitelist" tag that essentially provides verification status to the accounts w/o the blue check, meaning they are exempt from spam/abuse flags, more visible/likely to trend on hashtags.
6. The CENTCOM accounts on the list tweeted frequently about U.S. military priorities in the Middle East, including promoting anti-Iran messages, promotion of the Saudi Arabia-U.S. backed war in Yemen, and "accurate" U.S. drone strikes that claimed to only hit terrorists.

7. CENTCOM then shifted strategies & deleted disclosures of ties to the Twitter accounts. The bios of the accounts changed to seemingly organic profiles. One bio read: "Euphrates pulse." Another used an apparent deep fake profile pic & claimed to be a source of Iraqi opinion.

8. One Twitter official who spoke to me said he feels deceived by the covert shift. Still, many emails from throughout 2020 show that high-level Twitter executives were well aware of DoD's vast network of fake accounts & covert propaganda and did not suspend the accounts.
9. For example, Twitter lawyer Jim Baker mused in a July 2020 email, about an upcoming DoD meeting, that the Pentagon used "poor tradecraft" in setting up its network, and were seeking strategies for not exposing the accounts that are "linked to each other or to DoD or the USG."
10. Stacia Cardille, another Twitter attorney, replied that the Pentagon wanted a SCIF & may want to retroactively classify its social media activities "to obfuscate their activity in this space, and that this may represent an overclassification to avoid embarrassment."
11. In several other 2020 emails, high-level Twitter executives/lawyers discussed the covert network and even recirculated the 2017 list from CENTCOM and shared another list of 157 undisclosed Pentagon accounts, again mostly focused on Middle East military issues.
12. In a May 2020 email, Twitter's Lisa Roman emailed the DoD w/two lists. One list was accounts "previously provided to us" & another list Twitter detected. The accounts tweeted in Russian & Arabic on US military issues in Syria/ISIS & many also did not disclose Pentagon ties.
13. Many of these secretive U.S. military propaganda accounts, despite detection by Twitter as late as 2020 (but potentially earlier) continued tweeting through this year, some not suspended until May 2022 or later, according to records I reviewed.
14. In August 2022, a Stanford Internet Observatory report exposed a U.S. military covert propaganda network on Facebook, Telegram, Twitter & other apps using fake news portals and deep fake images and memes against U.S. foreign adversaries. Link
15. The U.S. propaganda network relentlessly pushed narratives against Russia, China, and other foreign countries. They accused Iran of "threatening Iraq's water security and flooding the country with crystal meth," and of harvesting the organs of Afghan refugees.
16. The Stanford report did not identify all of the accounts in the network but one they did name was the exact same Twitter account CENTCOM asked for whitelist privileges in its 2017 email. I verified via Twitter's internal tools. The account used an AI-created deep fake image.
17. In subsequent reporting, Twitter was cast as an unbiased hero for removing "a network of fake user accounts promoting pro-Western policy positions." Media covering the story described Twitter as evenly applying its policies & proactive in suspending the DoD network.
18. The reality is much more murky. Twitter actively assisted CENTCOM's network going back to 2017 and as late as 2020 knew these accounts were covert/designed to deceive to manipulate the discourse, a violation of Twitter's policies & promises. They waited years to suspend.
19. Twitter's comms team was closely in touch with reporters, working to minimize Twitter's role. When the WashPost reported on the scandal, Twitter officials congratulated each other because the story didn't mention any Twitter employees & focused largely on the Pentagon.
20. The conduct with the U.S. military's covert network stands in stark contrast with how Twitter has boasted about rapidly identifying and taking down covert accounts tied to state-backed influence operations, including Thailand, Russia, Venezuela, and others since 2016.
21. Here is my reported piece w/more detail. I was given access to Twitter for a few days. I signed/agreed to nothing, Twitter had no input into anything I did or wrote. The searches were carried out by a Twitter attorney, so what I saw could be limited.

Related: According to a Harvard-Harris poll, the public thinks that the government conspired with twitter to censor conservatives, and that Twitter employees who did so should be prosecuted.

Note that the media was constantly informing the public that Iraq wasn't involved in 9/11 -- they knew that misinformation existed, and they were determined to stamp it out, issuing constant Public Service Announcements on their newscasts.

But 42% of the public -- the 42% of the public that still relies on the legacy media for "news" -- still thinks the Hunter Biden laptop is "Russian Disinformation."

Do you see any legacy media organizations pushing to disabuse their own viewers of this misinformation?

No. They're cultivating it.

NBC, MSNBC, and ABC have yet to note that the laptop is real. I don't think CNN ever has admitted that, either.

CBS only admitted it last month -- after the elections, conveniently enough.

It is inexcusable to allow a huge minority of the country continue believing a lie, especially if you -- you, the media I mean -- are the one chiefly responsible for causing them to believe that lie in the first place.

National Review will soon run three editorials about how ghastly a notion that is. Only conservatives should ever be prosecuted for edge-case crimes!!! That's the American Way!

Think Mitch McConnell and Roy Blount will stuff the omnibus with extra money so that the DOJ can prosecute those people involved in a government conspiracy to deprive US citizens of the civil rights? Or nah?

15 This information is worrisome because if the military is using their significant propaganda experience against foreign enemies via Twitter , it isn't much of a stretch to assume that they participated in the propaganda against US citizens as well. Which is a big problem if so. They would now be fighting on homeland soil against fellow Americans.

I don't think that analysis is correct. That 42 percent, most of it, believe what the propaganda organs tell them because it WANTS to believe it. This is NPC behavior in its purest form. There could a chyron flashing at the bottom screen that the information was false, and most of that 42 percent would believe whatever bullshit was being reported.

We live in a police state in no small part because many if not most want to believe in a police state. Their conditioning is well-nigh perfect.

Yeah, that bit is interesting. He tried to argue he was an american citizen and a naturalized German, but the court in London argued that he had lied to get a British passport and voted in Britain, he owed allegiance to the King, so they hung him.

I think Tokyo Rose, the lady that most identify with that name was a very tragic character. She made one f'up in travel plans and was forced into everything. While she was abused she still collaborated with allied spies to try to hurt the axis when she could. But she lived a hard painful life and is remembered only as a villain. Moral of this story? I personally experienced that more with Covid than anything else. It was shocking in regard to one lifelong friend I thought would not have fallen into unquestioning line to that degree. This is how insidious it all is. You are right in that they knew it was all lies, but they also thought that underneath it there was a truth. "If comrade Stalin only knew."

They knew their party was corrupt, but thought it was a layer of corruption on top of a higher purpose. This created many contradictions that required a lot of cognitive dissonance and vodka in order to accept.

She is wrong. It's been a sieve for a long time, the worst being the new embassy build in the late 70's/80's that used local USSR contractors who riddled the building with listening devices. But still, even with Brezhnev, you couldn't speak about ANYTHING in the USSR without the KGB knowing it. To the point that they would come in your hotel room or local quarters not on the embassy compound and move things around while you slept.
