Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Local Hero Dog CafeGrindlewald (again) Switzerland (again) Twenty-month-old Great Pyrenese defends sheep flock from pack of eleven coyotes, killing eight of the coyotes in heroic stand. When stacked up against a pack of 11 coyotes looking for blood, the expectation of a dog overcoming the odds to defeat them all seems insurmountable. Little did these coyotes know they were up against Casper. Despite being only a 20-month-old Great Pyrenees, the livestock herding dog at a home in Decatur displayed his heroic actions by protecting a herd of sheep last month. It all started in the cul de sac around 9 p.m. on Nov. 3 when a few coyotes came near the house. John Wierwille, the homeowner and Casper's owner, said that he was able to turn them away by throwing a few rocks in their direction and yelling at them to go away. However, the coyotes were not done. Around 2:30 a.m., Wierwille said he was awakened by the dogs barking and went outside to see his two dogs, Casper and Daisy, backing the sheep up in the corner in order to keep them safe. ... Wierwille describes the moment Casper sprang into action, as he charged into the middle of the pack in a scrum between the animals that lasted roughly 30 minutes. After killing a few coyotes in the initial action, Wierwille said that Casper continued to fight. After the coyotes jumped out of the fence, they split up and ran different ways. The undeterred Casper chased them down outside of the fence line, where another fight led to him killing a few more down an embankment to the creek that borders their home, Wierwille said. He lost sight of Casper and couldn't find him anymore. Casper killed eight coyotes, but it was his disappearance that concerned the owner more.Vets had to scramble to save his life. The team at LifeLine has been helping the dog, Casper, rehab following the incident which happened about a month ago. They described the harrowing situation as the dog, just 20 months old, was left with serious wounds to his back and neck. Casper also lost his tail in the attack, the vet said, and wasn't found after the attack for two days. He was only found when he somehow made his way home two days later, popping his head up out of the chicken hutch. "He looked like death, I mean he looked terrible," his owner John Wierwille said. "He came back home and he just kind of looked at me like, 'boss stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me.'" Dr. Brosman, the vet, said Casper's survival was a "miracle." But now, she said, his prognosis is "good for a full recovery." "He's a hero for sure," Dr. Brosman said, adding that she had seen attack wounds before, but never anything this severe. ![]()

Casper deserves a few nice juicy steaks or muttonchops. Just a baby, as far as Great Pyrenees go, too. They get way bigger than that.
Snow: if anyone wants some, we'll be glad to send you all you want. 32" on the ground at Chez Borgia, with 4-8" more expected tonight. Pyrs are great dogs. I've got a brother and sister pair.
The brother lives in the woods around the property and only comes around when I feed. The sister is gentle as could be and sleeps on the front porch. At night, I hear him barking in the woods and she will answer by barking back. I can't swear to it, because I don't speak doggish, but I think they are coordinating where they are located for guarding, because if he barks from one end of the property, she'll work her way to the other end away from him. Very peculiar. I haven't lost a chicken since I got them. and if I have to go round one of the chickens up at night to get it in the coop and it starts that panic-clucking, one of the Pyrs will show up out of nowhere. 41 @skip - it’s so hard, you love those furry faces so much. I am an animal lover, period. I have almost always had cats and a dog. I have been blessed with having a few dogs that should have been once in a lifetime dogs. We lost our German Shorthair Pointer (Faust) 2 years ago at 15. What a dog he was, he was uncannily smart. When my Sabi cat was a tiny baby, my big cat got really sick with kidney issues. He just didn’t have it in him to raise a kitten while he was sick, so Faust stepped in and did it. You could just see it on his old face “Well someone has to raise this thing. Guess it’s me.” He tolerated his little nub tail being pounced, his ears, his food stolen. They cuddled in sunbeams. He gave the kitten a good WOOF! only one time when he got his lip bitten a little too hard. It never happened again!

D*mn it, that's misuse of the word scrum. A scrum is an orderly method to get the ball back in play after an unintentional violation of one of the laws of rugby. If the players (or canines, in this instance) are on their feet, it's a maul. If the ball carrier is on the ground, it's a ruck. The latter is the genesis of the phrase "Rugby is rucking fun." I have a small flock of sheep and until recently, a Great Pyr and a Pyr/Anatolian Shepard pair. I can attest to the indifference of both to following commands. They operate entirely on hardwiring. 100% dedicated to their sheep, and me. The male, Gibbs, got out of the pasture once and I found him in the neighbor’s pasture next door, just lying there, surrounded by about a dozen calves. He just decided to guard them that day. The cows were fine with it. I lost Sophie last year to old age (13) but Gibbs is still walking his post with his little flock of six. If all hell breaks loose in the middle of the night, I’ve been known to jump on my ATV in Crocks and my pajamas with my trusty .38 and a cheater bar and race to the back of the pasture to join Gibbs at the fence to yell at the coyotes. It’s humbling to know a dog that would literally give his life protecting us. It’s my job to make sure he doesn’t end up in that position. It’s crossed my mind that Casper needs to come live with us…

Posted by: TexasDan at December 14, 2022 08:07 PM (dv1Cu) The Hyksos seem to roughly line up and be relatively easy to reconcile with the Biblical narrative. If following the decline of Hyksos rule(which need not be official Pharoahdom and reconciles modern disputes about the location of a capitol vs the ancient record) the remaining population was largely subjugated, departing at a later date. Avaris could be Pi-Ramesses, identified as Rameses in the Bible. Avaris being the old Hyksos "capitol" is therefore highly symbolic. Sock Monkey, consider a pair if you are dealing with wolves or lions. If you’re interested in the world of Livestock Guardian Dogs and their nature, there’s a woman in Wyoming running a very large flock of sheep on open range. She uses a bunch of dogs, maybe 6-8 when the sheep are away from her ranch. https://tinyurl.com/y8ym59hw

I also got the feeling if the vet and others didn't pay for the emergency care and rehab the owner would have put the dog down. Again just the feeling I got and could be totally wrong.

Thanks for the link Vitigator. It's something I should consider. I haven't seen any wolf sign in my immediate area yet but neighbors on the other side of the timber company property across the street have had incidents with their livestock. About 3 miles as the wolf wanders. Washington game department was doing a study on predation effects on the local deer, elk and moose populations this summer. They apparently have been monitoring 14 wolves but they don't consider them an established pack. We've had wolf sightings in our area for about 6 years so I think the state can get screwed on their no established pack

I read the first article on Casper and my heart broke. I couldn’t imagine one of my dogs in a fight like that and not at least attempting to shoot some of them. From the article, some were inside the paddock fence and some were not so they weren’t all stacked together. He might have even driven them away if he’d unloaded on a couple. Thing is, panic causes people to freeze and unless the guy had gamed that kind of scenario ahead of time, he really may have been completely unprepared for what happened. There was a second dog, a female, and she pushed the sheep back and did not engage the coyotes. I’ve seen my dogs do something similar when strangers approach our gate. Gibbs would go out to confront and Sophie would move the sheep and then watch from a middle distance between the sheep and Gibbs. It was kind of amazing to see them work together. Here’s a link to a video on livestock dogs that is pretty informative. https://tinyurl.com/smct9hvj

Along with the torpedo, get depth bombs and GP bombs. Now the sticking point of any GWH boxing of VT-8 at Midway. They provide decals for Waldron's and Gay's planes. Both were attrition replacements which means the bombardier doors under the pilot are incorrect shape and have two too many arms plus the little fuselage windows at the pilot's feet were eliminated. I make more then $12,000 a month online. It’s enough to comfortably replace my old jobs income, especially considering I only work about 11 to 12 hours a week from home. I was amazed how easy it was after I tried it…
