Scientists Say Fusion Reactor Produces More Energy Than It Consumes*
* Except It Totally Doesn't Do That, Science Writers Are Stupid and Have Been Lying to You For Years

Sorry to inform everyone, but this is fake news.

US government scientists have made a breakthrough in the pursuit of limitless, zero-carbon power by achieving a net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the first time, according to three people with knowledge of preliminary results from a recent experiment.

Physicists have since the 1950s sought to harness the fusion reaction that powers the sun, but no group had been able to produce more energy from the reaction than it consumes -- a milestone known as net energy gain or target gain, which would help prove the process could provide a reliable, abundant alternative to fossil fuels and conventional nuclear energy.

The federal Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(opens a new window) in California, which uses a process called inertial confinement fusion that involves bombarding a tiny pellet of hydrogen plasma with the world's biggest laser, had achieved net energy gain in a fusion experiment in the past two weeks, the people said.

Although many scientists believe fusion power stations are still decades away, the technology's potential is hard to ignore. Fusion reactions emit no carbon, produce no long-lived radioactive waste and a small cup of the hydrogen fuel could theoretically power a house for hundreds of years.

...

The fusion reaction at the US government facility produced about 2.5 megajoules of energy, which was about 120 per cent of the 2.1 megajoules of energy in the lasers, the people with knowledge of the results said, adding that the data was still being analysed.

Oh, it produced 120% of the energy of the lasers hitting the pellet? So the energy being used on the lasers was the only energy going into the reactor?

No. Not even close.

As Sabina Hossenfelder (a physicist) explains below, science "journalists" -- probably being misled by researchers themselves, who want the public to think that fusion is closer to realization than it is -- have been playing a game (lying, I'd say) about what constitutes the "break-even point" of fusion power production, the point at which output of energy equals input of energy.

Now you would naturally assume that articles like this must be talking about output of energy versus all energy used to produce this energy, not just some of it. It's only that comparison that could possibly result in a claim of a "break even" in term of output versus input.

If the scientists are just saying output exceeded one of the lesser energy inputs required to get the output -- well that wouldn't be anything like what they're claiming, would it?

But that is exactly what is going on.

To produce energy through fusion through this method -- if I understand this right -- you need to confine the reaction with powerful electromagnets. This itself requires a huge amount of energy -- but this energy is never included in the comparison of output vs. input when science "journalists" say "we almost reached break-even" or, today, "we produced 120% of the energy that we put in."

There are two ways of measuring the energy required to produce fusion. Q[total] would be the sum of all energy inputted into the system. That is, the number we all think they're talking about when they say "output exceeded input."

But they're not talking about that. They're talking about Q[laser], which is only the energy used to power the lasers that are hitting the fuel pellet. This much smaller measure of energy is the energy they're talking about when they say "output exceeded input."

As you can see in the article above, they hint at this, by specifying later in the article that the energy produced exceeded the energy required to power the lasers, but then do not go on to mention that there are other energy costs -- big ones -- beyond the lasers.

For a fusion reactor to actually reach "the break-even point" where it's producing more energy than it's consuming, the energy produced must exceed Q[total], not just Q[laser].

But Q[laser] is the only thing these "science journalists" ever talk about, and the actual scientists running these fusion projects never seem to correct them.

This is like claiming your company is running at a "profit" because revenues exceed the costs for materials -- without noting that there are some other costs, like labor, rent, insurance, etc., that must be included to determine if you're really running at a profit or not.

And so the public remains misinformed, even lied to -- but misinformed and lied to in the right way, inclined to support The Science (TM).

This doesn't mean that fusion isn't worth pursuing.

It does mean that they're lying about being anywhere near the break-even point. This is going to take decades, if it's even achievable at all.

The US department of energy has said energy secretary Jennifer Granholm and under-secretary for nuclear security Jill Hruby will announce "a major scientific breakthrough" at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Tuesday. The department declined to comment further.

Jennifer Granholm? Oh, in that case, ignore everything I wrote. Obviously this is legit.

61 Yeah I think fusion is worth looking into but there's so much hoakum out there. I remember when a college lab claimed to have created a breeder reactor (feeds its self and does not need new sources of energy) in the 90s, etc.

There's a lot of money out there for getting it right, and some sloppy work being done but more significantly sloppy REPORTING being done.

I mean, scientists are bad about using sloppy language when they talk to reporters, saying things like this IS true rather than it appears this may be true or this is promising. And reporters don't like careful hedging language, they like sexy direct language.

Science has increasingly become sloppy and lazy with how they state things. You get statements like "this is 14 million years old" when they don't know that, they simply estimate with best information and it PROBABLY is that old, based on current data.

But you don't get grants and lab space being precise, so... you get the lazy sloppy language.

However, they've got the systems at those plants emitting less 'pollution' than gasoline engine cars. That didn't stop the Owebama administration from shutting them down and tearing them out because of "climate change."

When Texas had "Snowmageddon," the only plants that remained online and produced constant power were the coal burning plants. Even the natural gas plants shut down because the gas will freeze and become a goo that won't pump or burn properly.

Last I heard the pellets were deuterium/tritium frozen. These are isotopes of Hydrogen, one with an extra neutron, one with two. The latter is also radio active. Both freeze only near absolute zero.

The downside of using lithium is that with three protons in each nucleus that is three times the force you need to overcome with Hydrogen, or nine times for Li on Li action.

89 Part, or maybe all, of the lying about "this close to fusion power" is the lie that it "is clean, like the Sun, you see"!

Yeah that clean sun, so deadly we need 20 miles of atmosphere and to be 93 million miles away just to not be destroyed by its immense radiation.

Clean.

90 I read a fascinating book entitled The Electric Sky by Donald E. Scott that posits that humanity has long misunderstood the entire fusion process; that the sun being powered by fusion is only unmeasurable conjecture; that the stellar fusion model does not explain very important aspects of a star, most notably the corona, and that fusion itself may very well be an endothermic process, which would upend the entirety of our understanding of astrophysics, and certainly energy research on Earth.

97 I stand behind no one in my complete and utter contempt with which I view all journalism-ists. They are as a rule, such awful people, that I have always imagined that there must be some incentive I don't understand that attracts despicable humans to that specific field. They could not reliably be such total reprehensible drecks and be randomly selected from the population at large.

They are undoubtedly lying about this for religious reasons. But one excuse I've heard which I think might hold water if it came from someone more honest than a journalist, is that if the reaction itself produces a net surplus, then it's a matter of scale and engineering to meet all the other additional energy needs required to power the system. This is not a crazy idea, it's just impossible so far.

The organization Times Up said in September 2020 that it was "providing PR support" to Areu. On November 15, 2021, the case was dismissed. In all cases, however : (1) It's a minuscule amount of energy, and (b) It's not a continuous process that can be harnessed to generate steam, to spin a turbine, to turn a generator to make electricity.

It's a one-shot deal, that takes weeks to set up, then generates a lot of power for a fraction of a second, with no way to do anything useful with the power.

118 I have seen this here by infinitely smarter people than me.

The Thermal Bottleneck
If the first law of thermodynamics says you can't win, then the Second Law of Thermodynamics says you can't even break even.

The First Law is essentially a statement of conservation of energy and asserts that you can't get more energy out of a heat engine than you put in.

But the Second Law says that no heat engine can use all the heat produced by a fuel to do work.
The Carnot cycle sets the ideal efficiency which can be obtained if there is no friction, mechanical losses, leakage, etc., but real machine efficiencies are much less.

it uses a different process - it uses its huge mass to overcome repulsion and compress the fuel and high temperatures to allow them to bang hard. It uses a Carbon nucleus to pass through a cycle of reactions that leads to some H turning to He and returns the Carbon back to doing it again.

What are conditions like at the center of ol' Sol where the fusion takes place? Some basic numbers:

Temp = 27 million F.
Pressure = 3.8 trillion psi

If you're interested, the two reactions that dominate in the Sun are the proton-proton reaction, and the CNO cycle.

Both of these fuse 4 protons into one He-4 nucleus (note you've got to add two electrons in there as well, inverse beta reaction).

I've been wondering if a theromnuclear device would absorb the lithium if the device went off near an EV with lithium batteries.

H-bombs use Lithium Deuteride, a salt of lithium with deuterium, the isotope of Hydrogen that has a nucleus of one proton and one neutron. The fission bomb triggers the deuterium to undergo fusion.
Years ago, I used to follow Dr. Robert Bussard and his development of his Polywell Fusion reactor. It seemed very promising. And then, Dr. Bussard died of lunch cancer (he was 70 - something). People were carrying on his work, but I don't know what happened to it.
Bussard had worked out how the Polywell reactor would work, and also how you get power out of it. It was elegantly simple in concept, actually.

You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

Fusion is initiated when the pressure forces two atoms of hydrogen together so closely they fuse into Helium, liberating huge amounts of energy.
It is possible to do this with the pressure and heat created by a star's gravitation, or by heating things up really hot other ways.
The hard part is making it controllable. A hydrogen bomb has a surplus of energy for example, but it is hard to use that for much.

Posted by: Elric Blade at December 12, 2022 03:26 PM (iFTx/)

213 There can be more benign explanations for this misunderstanding, for example maybe in a future energy-producing facility (which this is still quite far from) the electromagnets can be kept on all the time and will be self-sustaining to some extent, due to superconductivity or whatever, and only lose energy slowly, so they can be used for several pulses? And then this ratio is only going up (by fits and starts), today it's 120%, the first time it went over 100%, last year my understanding is that it was 70%, maybe in a year it'll be 200% or higher, and at some point these reactors will produce net energy.
I will read more about it.

Newtonian physics gets warped by relativity (they tell me). But the basic laws hold for most of us mere mortals.

The trick is to use "free energy" like wind or solar, but all the energy to produce those "magic free energy" machines is not free, and the "machines" don't last forever.

Anyhow an interesting point was how horrified the man was that reproduction was so cheap on other worlds - how would anyone allow all child creating and rearing costs to be counted as free and gain no tax or social credit for it.

220 Even the natural gas plants shut down because the gas will freeze and become a goo that won't pump or burn properly.

I don’t think natural gas turns to goo until you get far colder temperatures than what Texas was subjected to. Like, hundreds of degrees cooler.

What turned off the natural gas plants is that the pumps were connected to the grid. So when the grid in the Permian Basin was assigned a rolling blackout, the pumps stopped, and the flow stopped, and the plants had no fuel.

My understanding from people who work there is that the pumps used to be self-powered—they’re literally pumping a power source, after all. But subsidies and regulations strongly push producers into using the grid rather than their own power.

225 Wow!

That’s about 0.11 kWh. That takes into account the power to generate it.

If it lasted an hour. It likely lasted a millisecond or less.

NIF has been described as the most complex piece of machinery ever built by man. I remember colleagues calculating that the lab would never keep all the lasers focused on target before loosing one, but they kept hammering away at it.

But NIF will never be the true path to fusion. Too much of a Rube Goldberg machine. It’s a brute force approach that isn’t “sustainable” as the libs like to say.

The best path would be plasma fusion but that’s hard too. The path to controlling it is complex, and highly nonlinear. Earlier this year googles deep mind successfully kept tokamak fusion (laser fusions competitor) going beyond the nonlinear point calculated That was a real success.

Unlike NIF, it produced a respectable 16 kWh for 5 seconds. Which shows promise for the cheaper more elegant AI/tokamak technology.

The lasers they are using are probably 10% efficient at best. With superconductive coils the energy loss in the confinement magnets is very minor.

239 The Thermal Bottleneck
If the first law of thermodynamics says you can't win, then the Second Law of Thermodynamics says you can't even break even.

....

You can't build a self perpetuating machine. But fusion isn't that. It's putting fuel into a furnace. You can get lots of power out of that.

When you have to make the fuel then that first statement comes into play. You can't split water atoms to get hydrogen then oxidize the hydrogen back into water and come out ahead.

But if you make the hydrogen into tritium you can maybe have a net gain in power.

Posted by: illiniwek at December 12, 2022 03:26 PM (Cus5s)

I am very suspicious that after all these years of dark matter / energy / whatever there is no explanation about what it is / might be and how it works and they don't even seem to be thinking of one. Look Dark Matter is needed to make Galaxies work. On Look, here's a galaxy that *doesn't* have any. Cool, right?

Quantum Mechanics was odd enough, but in about 20 years they had the basic mechanics down and could work through the implications.

284 Also not quite true. Whomever briefed you on the technology left out a really huge point about laser induced fusion. The point of the laser fusion method is to eventually eliminate the need for electromagnetic containment. I'm sure they are still using it in this reactor but laser fusion may lead to a reactor design that doesn't use energy hungry electromagnets to provide containment by being able to control power output through a string of fizzle reignite events which keeps conditions within containment parameters for ordinary materials.

The whole point of the Lawrence experiment was to see if they could do all of these ignition events and actually have more power come out than went in for ignition.

Natural Gas contains impurities, like butane, propane, and other hydrocarbons. Too many of those can gum up any natural gas compression or metering process when it is very cold. They can actually freeze up and plug the gas lines if it gets cold enough and enough impurities both.

Also have you seen power plants in the South? They don't even put the power turbines inside a building. How well will they start up in freezing temperatures if the lubricating oil is too cold? Turbine Bearings support hundreds of tons of rapidly rotating steel and are really touchy.

And that's not all. In addition to the Qlaser and Qmagnetic you have to input, there is the problem of transferring the released energy into a working medium, typically water, to produce steam that can be used in a turbine generator, with all of its supporting systems, the lighting and auxiliary systems for the containment structure, and so on, before you ever get to the break even point.

376 cool info. I wonder if the new "dark energy and dark matter" will change any of those laws of thermodynamics. (because they used to think Big Bang would collapse back on itself, now some "free energy source" force is causing constant acceleration/expansion outward, they think).

If you talk to physicists privately, they will admit that the "Law of conservation of energy" is wrong on at least cosmic scales. The problem is that the cosmic red shift means energy is constantly being destroyed; the photons being emitted contain more energy than the red shifted photons we receive. (The shorter the wavelength of light, the more energy in each photon.) In addition, an accelerated rate of expansion (dark energy) can't possibly conserve energy.

I hope fusion can be made useful, but I've been hearing about it being 10 or 15 years away from being harnessed, since the 1960s, so by now I'm a bit skeptical.

Bussard had worked out how the Polywell reactor would work, and also how you get power out of it. It was elegantly simple in concept, actually.
Posted by: A face in the crowd...... at December 12, 2022 03:20 PM (vcOmj)

I used to follow that, too. Bussard was a real genius, and in no way any kind of crank. Last I heard, he and his team figured that if a commercial-scale Polywell reactor were built, it would work just fine. But smaller ones can't work at a net positive, because of scaling factors. And IIRC, the Polywell design took the energy out of the reaction by magnetic induction, so generated electric current directly.

445 "if I understand this right -- you need to confine the reaction with powerful electromagnets."

You understand it wrong. This is inertial confinement based fusion, not plasma based. No magnets are used, only lasers. Though no doubt there is some loss converting electricity into laser output.

Posted by: Ed at December 12, 2022 06:05 PM (fYoJ2)

446 there are two different methods to do fusion.

Laser inertial confinement

Magnetic confinement (tokamak)

You don't do both at the same time. Laser inertial confinement beams a bunch of high-powered lasers at the target pellet from all directions, this compresses it, the compression heats it, the compression and heat get it to the point where some of the material can fuse.

Tokamaks take a plasma and pinch it periodically to do the same thing.

But you don't use both at the same time as they're different methods of doing the same thing.

450 "The NIF power conditioning system (PCS) drives the 7,680 flashlamps located in the NIF laser’s main and power amplifiers, delivering nearly 330 million joules of electrical energy on each NIF shot.

Energy is stored over a period of 60 seconds in 3,840 high-voltage capacitors before being released in a 400-microsecond burst."

The headline-making shot generated about 2.5 million joules total energy of various types (not just thermal). This is less than 1% of the energy used to drive the laser pulse.

The need to cool the optics between shots to prevent optical distortion leading to hotspots that would damage the optics, limits NIF to fewer than a handful of max power shots per day.

Neglecting other losses (such as throwing away nearly 100 times the energy it produces), the 2.5MJ output is equivalent to about 25W over 24 hours.

To be scaled to commercial power plant levels, that output would need to be scaled up about seven orders of magnitude.
